The subject vehicles are heavy duty pickup trucks with diesel engines and automatic transmissions commonly used for commercial and work purposes.a column mounted shift lever is used for gear selection and an electronic prndl on the instrument panel provides gear position information to the driver.the subject vehicles are also equipped with a brake-transmission shift interlock that prevents the shift lever from being moved from the park position (when the engine is on) unless the brake pedal is depressed and an ignition-shift interlock that prevents key removal unless the transmission is in the park position.complainants generally report that the vehicle was being operated in a forward gear and brought to a stop through brake application on alevel surface, at which time the operator moved the shift lever to engage the park position.the operator then opened the driver side door and, without verifying park engagement (e.g., prndl gear indication), securing the park brake, or turning the engine off, exited the vehicle.initially, no vehicle movement was apparent, however, a short time later, typically reported as 10 to 30 seconds, the vehicle moved rearward under engine power.the incident often ended in a vehicle crash, and sometimes involved serious injury.two fatalities are alleged.odi

On may 16, 2005,odi opened preliminary evaluation pe05-027 to investigate complaints of engine stalling in model year 2004-05 dodge durango suvs and ram 1500 series pickups equipped with the 5.7l v8 engine.information provided by daimlerchrysler during pe05-027 indicated that a large percentage of the complaints are related to an idle undershoot condition that may cause the engine to stall during turning maneuvers.in february 2005, daimlerchrysler revised the powertrain control module software in production vehicles and issued a technical service bulletin (tsb 18-013-05) releasing the new software as a service remedy for the idle undershoot condition.the bulletin was superceded by tsb 18-013-05a in april 2005.daimlerchrysler believes that the failure rate for stalling while driving due to the idle undershoot condition is low and that the bulletin has adequately addressed the problem. since pe05-027 was opened, odi has continued to receive complaints from owners of the subject vehicles who allege experiencing engine stall incidents under all types of driving conditions.in some instances the stalling has continued after the vehicle received the service bulletin repairs.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea05-018) to further assess the scope, frequency, and safety consequences of the alleged defect in dodge durango and ram 1500/2500/3500 series pickup trucks.
EA05018CHRYSLER GROUP LLC11/02/200508/29/2007ENGINE STALL
Analysis of the complaint, field report and warranty data shows that the majority of stalling incidents in the subject vehicles appear to be related to the engine calibration concerns that daimlerchrysler addressed with service bulletins releasing revised pcm software.analysis of the complaints and odi's survey of owners of vehicles that received engine management software updates under tsb #18-013-05 show that these stalling incidents have the following characteristics: - they occur at low speeds, often during parking lot ordriveway maneuvers; - they occur during decelerations, such as braking for a stop sign or traffic signal; and - the operator is almost always able to immediately restart the vehicle.when compared with other safety defect investigations and recalls of conditions that result in stalling during low-speed deceleration with immediate engine restart possible, the failure rate in the subject vehicles is low.analyses of complaint and warranty data also show a declining trend.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted.see document file for additional information regarding this resume.

10 minutes after start up i began to travel in drive gear of automatic transmission. upon acceleration the pedal was dead, i.e. no power. the engine was running fine. after the truck decelerated to about 10 mph the pedal was back and working. this happened again after about 20 seconds. this behavior continued for 30 minutes and stopped. it was colder that morning (10 degrees f). the pedal also had run away acceleration at times before the pedal went dead. i thought it was fuel related but that doesn't explain the run away acceleration. i believe it an electrical problem with the apps system? very scary though. i hope it doesn't die crossing and intersection. *tr

Clicking and shaking when in 4x4 mode. sounded like u joints. after having it checked by a mechanic, he found both sides needed ball joints and the u joints on the axle was worn out. this was an expencive repair of over $1200. also the tie rod ends needed replacement. he said that the weight of the diesel engine was the cause. he said that all of these front ends with the diesel engine needed to be replaced after about 70k miles. i am dissapointed.

Dodge death wobble. i have a 2004 dodge ram 2500 that has the death wobble. i see not many have been reported, but everyone ends up with it at one point. read message boards. they all talk about their experiences. i have to pay 300 bucks to replace parts that are recommended to possibly solve the problem. it is not deadly if handled correctly, but it causes you to have to stop immediately. i had to stop 3 times on the pa turnpike over the weekend. just got back from dealer. only suggested to try changing the steering dampener. that is not the issue though. *tr

Driving down the freeway the truck became harder to steer and it felt like it was in 4 wheel drive. the indicator light did not show that it was. a little farther and the transfer case fell out on the freeway. about 3 weeks previous i also had the same feeling of it being hard to turn like it was in 4 wheel after i started it up, but it went right away. i was on vacation and had to have it towed 75 miles to dealership. they have said they don't know how this could happen, unless there was no fluid in the transfer case or it got put into reverse. neither was the case. i was going down the freeway at 65 miles per hour and there was fluid all over the road after i got it pulled over. i have two tow truck drivers who can verify that. i feel that it went into 4 wheel drive mode on it's own and am lucky to be alive. i just had to have the whole computer system replaced about six months ago on this same vehicle and feel that i have an unsafe and dangerous vehicle. the resolution is a bill for $4028. i do have the old parts. *tr

2004 dodge ram 2500 qslt 4 x 4 diesel excessive vibration in steering, seats, floorboards and mirrors at highway speeds around 70 to 75 mph. vehicle has been to dealer twice for a total of 12 days. technician has duplicated problem and dealer has tried to rectify problem. dealer has replaced u-joints, drive shaft, tried rebuilding the differential, even swapped known good wheels and tires from a new vehicle. tried adjusting air pressures and rotating wheels. dealer has contacted s.t.a.r. technical center. the center gave them a lengthy recommendation for isolating this vibration only to seem to have made the vibration worse. at this time the dealer has been told by the manufacturer that they are not authorizing any more attempts to repair this problem. when contacting the customer service center at chrysler i was told to work with the dealer. i was finally told by the dealer that chrysler is aware of this problem and is supposedly working to resolve it. if you ask me, after researching the internet, i have seen this complaint by several consumers of this particular model, and it dates back over a year and a half. *nm

I did not have a accident, but my transmission began to fail in such a manner that the transmission did not know what gear it was supposed to be in. one day it would be fine and the next it might begin ok and then ten minutes later it would start off from a stop light in 2nd or 3rd gear and it was difficult to pull into traffic. dodge is aware of the problem because the dealerships are stocking the internal transmission parts to fix it. my mechanic talked to a nearby dodge dealer to obtain the parts and they said they knew of the problem and had a good supply of parts if needed. we also spoke to two different transmission shops that said this was a common problem. the necessary parts that needed to be replaced to fix this were a govenor compression solonoid and pressure switch. both of which are located in the gear box just above the pan. the parts were only available from dodge and cost about $220.00 just for the parts. i would like to know if dodge has reported this problem. i have been in contact with them inquiring why they have not done a recall since they are aware of the problem and all they have told me so far is that it is a lengthy process that involves your department.

The software change that indicates that the parking gear is not properly engaged, goes off all the time. at the most inconvenient times. like the middle of the night, at a quiet campground, when parking the truck. it seems that there is a better solution for the problem than sounding the horn. maybe correct the problem. also the horn goes off when backing the truck with the door open. i know it is supposed to do that with the band aid fix but when hooking up to trailers, it is often nice to leave the door open when backing. *tr

Upon having the truck at dealer b for warranty servicing, the dealership installed without my knowledge or consent the e17 out-of-park alarm, similar to recall nhtsa campaign 05v462000. the recall was for a computer flash to look for several things to occur simultaneously; 1) driver's side door opened, transmission was in reverse, and foot was off of brake. when these conditions occurred the horn started blowing and the lights start flashing. this was not an acceptable recall, and i didn't want it on my truck. on numerous occasions i needed to back up by having the driver's side door open to use the ground as a reference. this typically occurred when mirror or window views were blocked, or there was an object behind that could not be seen. when trying to back up to these objects the horn started blowing and lights started flashing. this resulted in bothering neighbors, coworkers, etc. it was an annoyance and it did not result in a safer vehicle. chrysler needed to develop an alternate method for addressing the problem, if there was truly a problem needed to be addressed. chrysler informed me that they were not willing to reverse the recall that it was in place. also, they claimed that they were mandated to do the recall if i brought the truck in for service, and therefore claimed they had no duty to inform me beforehand. this was tantamount to tampering with my vehicle without my knowledge or consent. does chrysler have the authority to perform this recall without my knowledge or consent? if so, from where do they derive this authority?*ak updated 04/18/07. *jb

On march 31, 2006 i stopped the 2004 dodge 2500 ram 4x4 to pick up my mail. prior exiting the vehicle i placed the shift lever into park believing it was in locked park condition. the vehicle was on level ground and not moving. believing it was safe to exit the vehicle i exited on the drivers side leaving the drivers door open and walked approx. 30 feet in front of the vehicle( approx 15 t0 30 sec.). all of sudden the vehicle started moving backwards at a high rate of speed. concerned that other persons may be in the area i chased the vehicle down on a dead run. i attempted to enter the vehicle but was pulled down by the drivers door and hitting the back of my head on the pavement. i was temporally paralyzed and lost all limb movement. unable to move i laid in the road and watched the front wheel roll passes my head. the vehicle was stopped by a drainage ditch without any damage. i however was not as fortunate and continue today to have multiple head, neck and memory related medical related problems resulting from the accident. i was not aware of a safety issue until receiving a recall notice dcc in aug 2006. this is a very serious problem as the vehicle provides the driver with the false sense of safety when the vehicle is not in a safe mode.

I own a 2004 dodge ram 2500 xlt and on 03 25 06 i put my truck in park motor running to get a ice chest on patio. turned right back around and truck was gone. it was backing up hill still in park. i ran hollering to keep someone from getting hit. a maintenance man of the park jumped in and pushed the brake down with his hand it was still in park. while i turned the key off. well a 100 yards later the whole left side of the truck was damaged as it ran into a park model trailer and damaged the right side of the park model home if looking from front. it damaged the side panels of the trailer while putting a large hole in it along with the skirting. and possibly moving the trailer to the left. i believe that this is a serious problem and needs something done. it was a miracle no one was hit as we live in a very active 55 plus community and live on one of the busiest streets in the park. i have had my truck in several times to get the ac fixed and it still is not right. i don't know if i should keep the vehicle or sell it. i was never notified of the problem. i had it in the dealership and they said nothing about it. i feel i have a lemon. dodge needs to acknowledge the defects in there vehicles and fix them before someone else gets hurt. enough is enough. thank you *jb

A few weeks ago we had to have the transmission dropped on our 2004 dodge ram 2500 4x4. we bought this vehicle brand new last year so we were obviously surprised that we had to have something this extensive done so soon. my husband was leaving a house and put the truck in park to walk back and open the electronic gate. when he turned around the truck was rolling back at him. he managed to get his right leg up into the vehicle to try to reach up and put the truck in park. his leg was pinned between the door jamb and the electronic fence. finally the fence gave way and collapsed. he was lucky that it did that or it would have cut his leg off at the knee. he was shocked at what happened. after seeing all the similar complaints on a website - and one death - i wanted to make my complaint also so that maybe dodge will do something about it before more people get hurt. all i can think of is, what if our 3 yr old had been there - she would be dead right now. i think it is unacceptable that chrysler/dodge knows of this problem but won't recall the vehicle. it is life-threatening. please do something about it before more people are injured or killed. *nm

Re: dc e17 safety recall to install out-of-park alarm system this recall is an unacceptable resolution. it does not provide a fix to the lack of 2003-2005 dodge ram trucks to properly engage automatic transmission gear selections. the recall is being refused by myself and many others in the rv and towing community. activating an alarm if the vehicle is not fully in park and the engine running is going to do little to prevent accidents and/or personal injury. it is an annoying and obtrusive feature that drivers are over-riding anyway using faux seat-belt latches and jumper wires. the nhtsa should endeavor dc to fix the shifter engagement problem, not provide a band-aid to a poorly designed shifter mechanism. *nm

The vehicle had not been off road for several months but was driven on pavement. while driving down the road, with approximately 10 seconds of warning (similar to a tire howl sound) the front end locked up, jumped in the air and broke off the front drive axles. this caused a loss of steering and jumping of the vehicle. the dealership declared that road debris or an unknown object hit the lip of the front differential cover, which bent it out and causes all of the fluid to leak out, which ultimately resulted in the front end locking up on the highway. this cover hangs out an excessive distanced past the axle housing allowing it to be struck and bent by many objects including road debris. even though the vehicle is well within manufacturers warranty, they refuse to warranty it. the dealership stated that the entire front end is damaged and requires replacement at an out of pocket expense of approximately $4,350. the dealership also told me that this is not uncommon, that they have had several vehicles come in with the exact same problem. the work has still not been completed and all parts are still available for inspection. *tr

We have had our 2004 dodge truck for almost 3 years and have loved it - however, within the last 2 weeks we are very concerned about the safety of the truck we are driving. while traveling 80 mph down the freeway our truck started vibrating / shaking uncontrollably. we were unable to steer the truck and were drifting into the other lane of traffic - if i applied the brakes it only intensified the vibrations of the truck. we were finally able to get the truck into the emergency lane (luckily without causing any accidents) and had to wait until the truck reached below 45 mph before the vibrations stopped. had we stomped on the brakes - the truck most likely would have rolled. unbelievably, when we called the dealer they knew about this problem. they assumed that we had a leveling kit on the truck, which we do not. they have indicated that daimler chrysler has even issued a service bulletin on how to fix the problem, which could lead to be very expensive, depending on how many steps we have to take to fix the problem. the first step is having the alignment adjusted to a different specification - this is $90.00. i am concerned about the cost of repairs, but even more concerned about the safety of my family while traveling in the truck. this is my first step to get attention to this problem - this needs to be seriously looked into and a recall sent out to have the problem fixed. *jb

Very noticeable vibration in driveline. i could feel it mostly at higher speeds between 60 mph-90mph. noticed it right after i bought it. took it back to the dealer several times and they advised cannot duplicate customer concern. after 3 attempts to let dodge techs identify the problem with no success i had the assistant service manager morry at norm reeves dodge of temecula ca. ride with me. amazingly with me in the truck morry was able to feel the vibration. he told me,i've driven about 25 of theses trucks and they all do that. i said, nice, that says a lot about dodge quality. the dodge tech took another look at it and again put down on papercannot duplicate customer concern. frustrated, i attempted to solve the problem on my own realizing a dodge technician would probably never do so. i took the truck to a driveline shop that norm reeves dodge uses. they told me the driveshaft was out of balance and rebalanced it. it did not make the problem better. it actually made it worse. i had them remove the new weights they added which put it back to the way it was. the problem is back the way it was when i bought it. however, my wallet is a $100 lighter. mcpeek dodge in anaheim ca. immediately found the problem and advised me dodge is currently working on a fix for the truck but at this time there is no fix. they acknowledged this is a common problem. i also have had a burning oil smell in the cab while idling. the dealership advised me it was new engine packaging oil burning off. i have 9000 miles on truck now and no longer smell burning oil. my truck is a 2500 quadcab 4x4 short bed with the cummins ho 600. *ak

2004 dodge ram vin#3d7ka28d04g176384 quad cab slt. there is an obvious noise coming from the rear of the vehicle, best described as a loud whine. it occurs while accelerating or decelerating at low rpm's and only when the vehicle is cold and the temperature outside is cold as well. the colder it is outside, the louder the whine noted from the rear end. after approximately 5-10 minutes of driving, the noise steadily diminishes and then eventually completely disappears. took vehicle to the dealer and had it inspected during routine maintenance. maintenance technician advised that it was normal and was probably the pinion gear. took the truck back again as the temperature got colder and the whine got louder. they let the vehicle sit overnight and test drove it the next morning and, this time, heard the obvious whine. i was advised that there are no recalls or tsb's issued as of yet, but it is a problem that daimlerchrysler is investigating. the printout from dealerconnect stated that it is a rear propeller shaft center bearing noise issue-especially when cold. they also stated that a tsb or other notification may be issued after engineering review of the reported problem. it has been assigned a solution number of k32981098. i just wanted to report the problem to nhtsa so that appropriate follow up can be done and help expedite a recall notice if warranted. *ak

Drive train vibration (high frequency droan) that can be felt in steering wheel, pedals and even in the seat. purchased in april 04, started trying to get dodge to fix it in may and have made several attempts to no avail. obtained copy of fax from s.t.a.r center case report that apparently this is a fleet wide problem with my particular mode. fax states this condition is currently under investigation by dodge truck division. tsb / other may be issued when corrective action procedure is defined. since first try to correct in may 04 the vibration fuel line has vibrated lose, fuel injector pump failed leaking fuel out of the rear of the pump, 4 wd transfer case locked up once in high and once in low range at dealers. dealer had to order parts and were backordered. rebuilt parts used to replace failed parts. no codes stored in any module. i think these were failures due to the high frequency vibration. my concern is that the bad part in the drive train will eventually fail and possibly lock up the drive train causing me to lose control of the vehicle. in looking at the fax from s.t.a.r. dodge has a problem with this model and knew it in april 04 but did not notify the dealers or consumers such problem existed. this is a high dollar truck $42,000 msrp and i fear might be my death trap. model is 2004 dodge ram 2500 hd, cummins 600 diesel, 4 speed automatic transmission, 4 wheel drive, shift on the fly, quad cab, short wheel base. the south alabama service district manager, joe soblinaki, told me this was the first year for the new 4 wheel drive setup. they changed the transfer cases, and switched from a eaton axle to a hendrix axle. i did now know this at the time i bought this vehicle. they have been looking for a fix for 4 months on my vehicle and they still don't have a clue as to the problem or solution. i hate to take this truck to arbitration knowing dodge will resell it again and some other inocent fool will buy it and could get killed in it. thanks. *ak

POWER TRAIN - TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)

2004 dodge ram diesel 2500 transfer case failed at 59,865 miles and the dealer refused to repair under warranty (maximum protection warranty upgrade purchased) due to no oil in transfer case (improper maintenance). i contacted vernon at transfer case express (510) 533-2273 and was told that this is a common problem with this transfer case that it will develop a leak at the rear seal and all the transmission fluid will leak out while driving. this was confirmed by blumenthal transmission a direct distributor of these transfer cases. this was also confirmed by the fact that no dodge dealer in the usa has this part as it is on back order status greater than 30 days lead time. this presents as a serious vibration in the front of the vehicle (feels like a tire is falling off). *tr

While driving 70 mph driver heard a loud knocking noise coming from the front. vehicle vibrated uncontrollably. vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection numerous times, and mechanic determined that the transfer case needed to be replaced. *ak *nm
