EXTERIOR LIGHTING - TURN SIGNAL
PE08059CHRYSLER GROUP LLC10/07/200804/17/2009TURN SIGNAL MALFUNCTION
Odi has closed this investigation based on a review of the complaints, other field data and technical data submitted by chrysler to the agency.chrysler reports that the multifunction switch is hard wired into the instrument cluster (ic) and the cluster decides which direction has been selected based on an electrical signal from the multifunction switch.the ic sends a signal to the vehicle's totally integrated power module (tipm) and the tipm responds by controlling the voltage and flash rate of the exterior turn signal lamps and the instrument panel indicator.chrysler's testing found that improper levels of resistance within the multifunction switch may result in the ic selecting the wrong direction.complainants say that when the turn signal is used, the vehicle may signal the opposite direction and that the problem is often intermittent.this would be evident from the turn indicator lamps on the instrument panel as well as the exterior turn signal lamps.either right or left signals may be affected. dealers are correcting this by replacing multifunction switches on the steering column.neither odi nor chrysler has received any report of a crash related to the subject condition. chrysler will implement an extended warranty on the subject vehicle population.notification to vehicle owners is to begin in may 2009.this action is consistent with that taken in other investigations involving turn signal failures at similar rates.further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted at this time.accordingly this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety related defect does not exist.the agency will take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

I was driving down a two lane road at 70mph when approaching my road. i turned on my left blinker to signal my upcoming turn and when i began to turn the car behind me went to pass thinking that i was turning right. to avoid hitting me he went off the road into the ditch. when i talked to him about what happened he said that my right blinker was on. i have noticed this problem before on my truck and have noticed it since so i know he was telling the truth. there needs to be a recall on this before someone gets hurt. i also have trouble switching my high beams off or on causing problems with oncoming traffic on a daily basis. *tr

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 dodge ram 3500. the contact stated that the windshield wipers would not function. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. an authorized dealer was notified and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 09e009000 (visibility:windshield wiper/washer). the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. the failure mileage was 50,000. sm.

When using the turn indicator, either the opposite indicator comes on, or neither work. also, the windshield wipers don't work properly. they seem to operate randomly (e.g., work at high speed with the switch in the off position, or don't work at all with the switch in any position). it appears to me that the multi-function switch is defective. this problem nearly caused an accident while i was driving at highway speeds (60 mph)during a rainstorm and the wipers wouldn't operate. i had to drive to the side of the highway and shut off the ignition switch to resolve the problem. a less experienced driver may have had more severe consequences.

Rear turn/hazards signals do not work, front turn signals are fine. all fuses, wiring to lights, bulbs are fine. trailer plug is fine. this problem is causing many other motorists to not know my intentions when changing lanes or turning.

Backup light on one side went out. tried replacing the bulb, but it turned out to be the whole mechanism that holds all three rear lights. seems like a defect to me, my truck only has 40k on it. wanted to see if anyone else had same problem. please report on here to make it a recall and make the dealer pay for their faulty equipment. *tr

I turned left turn signal on prior to turning and a car behind me also had left turn signal on. the car behind me passed me on the left almost hitting me in the side as i began a left turn. i swerved off the road to the right and noticed that even though my left turn signal had been applied, the right flasher was blinking. i searched online and found : nhtsa action number : pe08059. dealer claims they are not aware of this, nor are they aware of this safety issue with other vehicles. *tr

Several days ago my turn-signal, windshield wiper switch started malfunctioning at times. for example i would activate the signal switch for a left turn and the right turn indicator light would go on. or, windshield wipers failed to work or did not perform the selected function. i consider this a safety hazard for obvious reasons and because this is the second switch i had in this truck. a year or so ago i had the switch replaced by dodge for the same complaint and now it is happening again. *tr

Turn the left turn signal on, and every so often, the right one will flash at the same time. people behind me get confused and try to go around me on the left and almost hit me. nov. 20th, 2006 is when problem started. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 dodge 3500 one ton. when the left turn signal is activated, the indicator on the instrument panel indicates that the vehicle is making a right turn. the failure can also be seen from the exterior of the vehicle. when making a left turn, vehicles in the rear are misled by the right turn signal illuminating. the failure and current mileages were 58,000. updated 10/03/08 *bf updated 10/06/08. *jb

Turn signals flash erratically. left turn signal sometimes signals right and visa versa. *tr phone interview update (6/26/2008): mr. llarena said that he had noticed a total of about five occasions that the dash turn signal indicators have flashed in the opposite direction than he had intended. two of the five occasions had occurred in the month since he reported the problem to nhtsa. the turn signals had also came on by themselves. when that happened, he jiggled the turn signal stalk to turn the signal off. he c0uld not think of any common thread or circumstance in all those occasions which may have triggered the turn signal anomolies. the problem has not been corrected because he couldn't dupicate it.

I have a 2006 3500 single wheel with 30,000 km(19,000mi). i narrowly escaped a serious accident yesterday. i was turning left from a busy road and was being followed too closely by a fully loaded rig carrying steel coils. i put on my signal and began to slow down to allow the approaching traffic to clear before i continued to turn left. i watched the rig come up on me quickly and i realized he was not slowing down and was beginning to veer into the oncoming traffic lane. it was then that i noticed that although i had on my left turn signal the right turn signal was activated. obviously the trucker thought i was turning right and was beginning to overtake me on my left figuring i would be, at any second, getting out of his way. if i was not watching my rear view and whipped the truck to the right out of his way, he would have smashed me into oncoming traffic and or put the rig into oncoming traffic. i called the dealer and said i would be right in. they were really good about it and showed genuine concern. the parts advisor informed me that the engineers in the detroit area were looking for a 2006 ram that had recently experienced this problem. obviously they (chrysler) are getting reports from others that this is happening. the part is back ordered which also indicates that this may be a problem which is happening all over the place. it blows my mind that the design of the multifunction switch would allow in any circumstance the signal to cross and cause the opposite signal to work. symptoms that happened a week before hand were an erratic timing of the signal and a quick flash of the opposite signal light. i contacted the dealer right away and they began the order process on the multifunction switch. it never happened again after that until yesterday. *tr

Unsure what caused the issue. the issue is the failure and or uncertain action of the turn signals as well as the hazard lights. the turn signals at times will not function at all or will signal in the opposite direction that the switch was indicated. the fault started to occur at around 60k miles. truck has 107k miles now and failure has increased frequency as the miles have increased. i have found that if i leave the turn signal switch alone while it is malfunctioning and adjust the tilt steering the turn signal issue may or may not resolve itself. *tr

Turn signal sometimes shows opposite of what is selected. phone interview update (8/26/2008): mr. madison was on the left turn lane waiting to turn left with the turn signal on. the motorist behind him horned and told mr. madison that his pickup had the right side turn signal flashing. mr. madison was puzzled because he had moved the turn signal stalk down to turn left. on that day and that day only, the turn signals were flashing in the opposite direction to what mr. madison had selected. the turn signal errors appeared on the dash indicators as well as the exterior indicators. *tr
