POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

The subject vehicles are heavy duty pickup trucks with diesel engines and automatic transmissions commonly used for commercial and work purposes.a column mounted shift lever is used for gear selection and an electronic prndl on the instrument panel provides gear position information to the driver.the subject vehicles are also equipped with a brake-transmission shift interlock that prevents the shift lever from being moved from the park position (when the engine is on) unless the brake pedal is depressed and an ignition-shift interlock that prevents key removal unless the transmission is in the park position.complainants generally report that the vehicle was being operated in a forward gear and brought to a stop through brake application on alevel surface, at which time the operator moved the shift lever to engage the park position.the operator then opened the driver side door and, without verifying park engagement (e.g., prndl gear indication), securing the park brake, or turning the engine off, exited the vehicle.initially, no vehicle movement was apparent, however, a short time later, typically reported as 10 to 30 seconds, the vehicle moved rearward under engine power.the incident often ended in a vehicle crash, and sometimes involved serious injury.two fatalities are alleged.odi

Analysis of the complaint, field report and warranty data shows that the majority of stalling incidents in the subject vehicles appear to be related to the engine calibration concerns that daimlerchrysler addressed with service bulletins releasing revised pcm software.analysis of the complaints and odi's survey of owners of vehicles that received engine management software updates under tsb #18-013-05 show that these stalling incidents have the following characteristics: - they occur at low speeds, often during parking lot ordriveway maneuvers; - they occur during decelerations, such as braking for a stop sign or traffic signal; and - the operator is almost always able to immediately restart the vehicle.when compared with other safety defect investigations and recalls of conditions that result in stalling during low-speed deceleration with immediate engine restart possible, the failure rate in the subject vehicles is low.analyses of complaint and warranty data also show a declining trend.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted.see document file for additional information regarding this resume.

On may 16, 2005,odi opened preliminary evaluation pe05-027 to investigate complaints of engine stalling in model year 2004-05 dodge durango suvs and ram 1500 series pickups equipped with the 5.7l v8 engine.information provided by daimlerchrysler during pe05-027 indicated that a large percentage of the complaints are related to an idle undershoot condition that may cause the engine to stall during turning maneuvers.in february 2005, daimlerchrysler revised the powertrain control module software in production vehicles and issued a technical service bulletin (tsb 18-013-05) releasing the new software as a service remedy for the idle undershoot condition.the bulletin was superceded by tsb 18-013-05a in april 2005.daimlerchrysler believes that the failure rate for stalling while driving due to the idle undershoot condition is low and that the bulletin has adequately addressed the problem. since pe05-027 was opened, odi has continued to receive complaints from owners of the subject vehicles who allege experiencing engine stall incidents under all types of driving conditions.in some instances the stalling has continued after the vehicle received the service bulletin repairs.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea05-018) to further assess the scope, frequency, and safety consequences of the alleged defect in dodge durango and ram 1500/2500/3500 series pickup trucks.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 dodge ram 2500 regcab swb. on march 31, 2007 while driving 70 mph, the contact noticed black smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle. the vehicle's cruise control was activated and he attempted to switch lanes. as a result, the vehicle began to swerve from left to right and eventually crashed into a ditch. the contact then smelled diesel fumes and noticed a leak coming from the engine. the next day he found a leak in the high pressure injection line which caused the clamp that holds the line together to become loose. the manufacturer sent out an investigator to take pictures of the vehicle. the contact stated that the investigator did not offer any reason as to why the failure occurred, other than the weather. chrysler stated that there was no mechanical defect and that the part was still under warranty for repair. he stated that when he took his vehicle to the dealer, they stated that they would not repair the vehicle due to legal proceedings. a police report was filed. the current mileage is 23,679 and failure mileage was 25,000.

Back end of 05 dodge ram 1500 slid on wet pavement at approximately 10 mph. when back end hit curb, axle snapped where wheel and axle meet. given events, this should be looked at as a defect-axle should not have broken in this condition. dealership claimed it under my insurance-would not even consider warranty.
SEATS - FRONT ASSEMBLY - POWER ADJUST
09/28/200656509106/04/2005
The driver seat mechanism failed during mild acceleration, causing the driver to be thrown backwards. the seat tilt mechanism has a plastic and metal gearbox that broke causing the seat to swing forward under braking and backward under acceleration. this causes control problems as the movement is about 1 foot. the dealer was pressured to replace the failed part and claims this is the first time it has ever occurred. the truck was 15 months old at the time of failure with 56,000 miles on the odometer. the part has not been improved, so i am looking at replacing this mechanism every 15 months! this seat tilt mechanism on the power seat is not designed properly. *nm

I recently got my 2003 dodge ram p/u 2500 2wd inspected. i was told that my front end squeaks and this is due to no ball joint grease. this vehicle has 16000 miles on it. i was told that i had a warranty problem. i contacted the dealer and they set me up for an appointment yesterday. i stopped in and explained what i was told. the person that wrote up my work order advised me that chrysler frowns upon them stating this fact in the work order and instead, he wrote that the complaint was ball joint noise poss. loose balljoint. during this stage, the service manager spoke up and told me that they had just put both upper and lower balljoints in a 2004 truck which is a year newer than mine. the dealer later contacted me and agreed with the original diagnosis by the inspection station, and indicated that both the upper and lower ball joints needed to be replaced and this would be under warranty. he then explained that the parts are on a national back order. i was told to pick up my truck and they would call me when the parts came in. when i picked up the vehicle this morning 5/27, the service manager spoke to me regarding the national back order and stated, does that tell you that theres a problem with the particular part! my concern here is that i would not expect to even consider this part to wear out for 50k-80k miles under normal use. given that these parts need replacement now, i should expect to replace these parts 10 times or more over the life of the vehicle since there aren't any grease fittings on them so that i could replenish the grease. could you please advise me if this is something that you are aware of and dealing with? thank you for your consideration
