EA04025 | CHRYSLER GROUP LLC | 08/26/2004 | 12/22/2005 | FALSE PARK | 05V462000
The subject vehicles are heavy duty pickup trucks with diesel engines and automatic transmissions commonly used for commercial and work purposes.a column mounted shift lever is used for gear selection and an electronic prndl on the instrument panel provides gear position information to the driver.the subject vehicles are also equipped with a brake-transmission shift interlock that prevents the shift lever from being moved from the park position (when the engine is on) unless the brake pedal is depressed and an ignition-shift interlock that prevents key removal unless the transmission is in the park position.complainants generally report that the vehicle was being operated in a forward gear and brought to a stop through brake application on alevel surface, at which time the operator moved the shift lever to engage the park position.the operator then opened the driver side door and, without verifying park engagement (e.g., prndl gear indication), securing the park brake, or turning the engine off, exited the vehicle.initially, no vehicle movement was apparent, however, a short time later, typically reported as 10 to 30 seconds, the vehicle moved rearward under engine power.the incident often ended in a vehicle crash, and sometimes involved serious injury.two fatalities are alleged.odi

EA05018 | CHRYSLER GROUP LLC | 11/02/2005 | 08/29/2007 | ENGINE STALL
Analysis of the complaint, field report and warranty data shows that the majority of stalling incidents in the subject vehicles appear to be related to the engine calibration concerns that daimlerchrysler addressed with service bulletins releasing revised pcm software.analysis of the complaints and odi's survey of owners of vehicles that received engine management software updates under tsb #18-013-05 show that these stalling incidents have the following characteristics: - they occur at low speeds, often during parking lot ordriveway maneuvers; - they occur during decelerations, such as braking for a stop sign or traffic signal; and - the operator is almost always able to immediately restart the vehicle.when compared with other safety defect investigations and recalls of conditions that result in stalling during low-speed deceleration with immediate engine restart possible, the failure rate in the subject vehicles is low.analyses of complaint and warranty data also show a declining trend.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted.see document file for additional information regarding this resume.

On may 16, 2005,odi opened preliminary evaluation pe05-027 to investigate complaints of engine stalling in model year 2004-05 dodge durango suvs and ram 1500 series pickups equipped with the 5.7l v8 engine.information provided by daimlerchrysler during pe05-027 indicated that a large percentage of the complaints are related to an idle undershoot condition that may cause the engine to stall during turning maneuvers.in february 2005, daimlerchrysler revised the powertrain control module software in production vehicles and issued a technical service bulletin (tsb 18-013-05) releasing the new software as a service remedy for the idle undershoot condition.the bulletin was superceded by tsb 18-013-05a in april 2005.daimlerchrysler believes that the failure rate for stalling while driving due to the idle undershoot condition is low and that the bulletin has adequately addressed the problem. since pe05-027 was opened, odi has continued to receive complaints from owners of the subject vehicles who allege experiencing engine stall incidents under all types of driving conditions.in some instances the stalling has continued after the vehicle received the service bulletin repairs.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea05-018) to further assess the scope, frequency, and safety consequences of the alleged defect in dodge durango and ram 1500/2500/3500 series pickup trucks.

2005 dodge ram 3500 4x4 diesel 48re automatic trans # [xxx]. truck is for personal use and has 117,000 miles on vehicle. truck was driven to store and torque converter bolts and torque converter studs welded on converter sheared off causing torque converter to evacuate trans fluid all over underside of truck and all over tires and brakes. this did not cause any accidents but could have damaged property and would have caused bodily injury if occurred during daily commute on interstate. this incident has been the first for me with an exceptional repair bill due to the damage that this created to the trans and flywheel and torque converter. dodge will not warranty any of this because of the mileage and dodge's bankruptcy. i have read various threads pertaining defective or weak torque converters and breaking of flywheels due to these issues but no recalls as of yet. the dodge dealer stated my truck was the second one this week with similar issues but they will not cover any of the damage to mine and must be paid out of pocket. there is definitely an issue with the weak parts being used on these veh that cause this problem because after market manufactures are producing different designed parts for this appl. this problem is the first for me but numerous trans shops have repaired the same symptoms for what i have found out. my repair bill for the faulty torque converter mounting bolts is over $2500.00 and increasing before my truck will be repaired less the money for towing and rental veh being needed. i have told the dealer i need all broken parts for my review and i am waiting for their reply. the dealership is being helpful but the have said that their hands are tied due to their bankruptcy and that if their was a recall that it would create a major panic with in the dodge name. i am cert. mechanic with over 25 years of experience and i am seeing more and more problems of this nature . please assist, and thank you. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Dt: the vehicle was parked and idling and without warning or occupancy of driver it popped from park to reverse, striking another car. this was the only incident with the vehicle. took vehicle to dealer, and they could not demonstrate what had happened. it was as though when it was in park it was not always in park and the same was when in reverse. a police officer witnessed the entire incident. there was a police report due to the fact that the vehicle that was hit had passengers in tow. the dealer did not take this seriously. however, the service representative witnessed how one could place the car in reverse and there was no movement. however, in repair shop they could not duplicate the problem.*ak

2005 dodge ram 3500 diesel crew cab short box truck.all front end components replaced at 90000 kms using dodge parts, nothing is worn out.a two inch leveling kit has been installed.the front end has been shaking since i bought it at 90000 kms,i have been chasing it for two years now, since then i have been to the dodge dealer on an apparent recall on the steering stabilzer,my truck did not meet the criteria, but i bought the parts anyway then added a adjustable track bar and a steering box stabilizer.it did help some ,but the shake is still there.in my opinion this is an engineering flaw and must be dealt with sooner than later.the wobble is triggered with a bump in the road at speeds between 80-120 kms,it shakes the steering so hard you have to hang on with both hands, brake and turn sharp left to right to get out of it.

A week before taking in my 2005 ram 2500 truck to have it looked at, i noticed that the steering had changed. the truck wandered, there was a vibration in the steering wheel, and mid way through a turn the steering wheel would lock up. three days before taking in my truck into the dealer, the steering gear box started to make a growling noise. after taking my truck in to have it looked at, the ase tech that was given to work order for my truck declared it safe for road use. 8 hours later after pleading with the head service manager to take my truck for a road test, the steering gear box that was deemed safe by the ase tech was condemned by the head service manager. to date the new steering gear box is on order from another dealership even after i was told by the service managers at john elway dodge that the part was in stock. *jb |
