Interior fan switch failure re: dodge status 1999 the fan speed switch in the dash has lost speeds 1,2 and 3. only position 4 (or high) works. after a very expensive replacement service, it failed again around a year later. again, it only blows on high speed. until this morning when my elder dad called to tell me he need to have his switch fixed on his dodge caravan 2003, i began to wonder how wide spread the issue was. i began looking on the internet to find many people complaining about the same problem. there are numerous complaints from customers of various chrysler models that are experiencing the same problem with the switch, resistor, or sensor. i believe there should be a national recall on the issue and customers should be compensated for repair already performed. here are a few related problems & complaints from vehicle owners. http://autorepair.about.com/library/faqs/bl547f.htm http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/dodge-durango/tmlimgpd8aaksokns http://www.myhonestmechanic.com/articles/dodge-dakota-air-conditioner.shtml http://www.carcomplaints.com/dodge/intrepid/1999/ac_heater/blower_fan_switch_stopped_working.shtml http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0dac8b/132 http://free-auto-repair-advice.blogspot.com/2008/06/blower-motor-stays-on-highcaravan.html http://www.dodgedakotas.com/boards/dea/62-3.html http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?p=6453105 thank you in advance for your assistance and speedy resolution. *tr b. williams

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 dodge stratus. on october 31, 2007, while driving approximately 35 mph, the contact heard a faint clicking sound coming from the steering wheel. she pulled into a parking lot and parked the vehicle. she then noticed a faint puff of smoke rising from the vehicle; however, she did not think it was a serious concern because the smoke was so faint. the vehicle eventually caught fire. the contact noticed sparks coming from underneath the vehicle and huge puffs of black smoke. the fire department arrived at the scene. they opened the hood and the engine was engulfed in flames. the fire department extinguished the fire and the contact believed a report was filed. the fire department was uncertain of the cause of the fire, but stated that it may have been electrical. the vehicle was destroyed. the contact was uninsured and the dealer informed her that she was still responsible for making her payments. the vin, purchase date, engine size, and powertrain were unknown. the current and failure mileages were approximately 100,000.

I was in my 1999 dodge stratus all of maybe 15 minutes traveling to the store. i turned it off and went in the store for maybe 5 minutes. i started my car again and traveled to a friends house maybe 10 minutes from the store. i was in their home probably 10 minutes tops. when i went to leave i noticed smoke coming out from under my hood and flames shooting out from under the front of my car. we tried unsuccessfully to put the fire out. when the fire department finally arrived my car was totally engulfed in flames. i had liability insurance so i just lost my car because it was totaled. then in april of 2006 i get a recall (e23) from daimler chrysler and i am totally amazed. this is probably what happened to my car. i notified daimler chrysler and the sent someone out to take pictures of my car and then sent me a letter denying my claim. the same complaints which alerted them of the problem with the power steering fluid hose and caused this recall to be made, are those with almost exact circumstances as myself. so what do i do now? the gentleman at customer claims resolution group for daimler chrysler stressed to me to hire and attorney. so this is what i will be doing within the next few days. *nm

On thanksgiving day of 2005 i picked up my 74 year old grandmother, who is blind to go see my mom, who lives about an hour away from me. as we were approaching my mother's house, i heard a popping sound from what appeared to be the power steering hose from my 1999 dodge chrysler stratus and the steering wheel locked up. smoke and fire started coming out from under the hood. i stopped the car and put it in park and shut off the ignition. i froze for a couple of seconds and realized we had to get out from out of the car. i went around to get my grandmother out and the locks went down automatically. i opened her door and told her to get out, hold on to me and run as fast as she could. she asked me what was going on and i told her the car was on fire and could blow up. we started running and screaming for help. people came out of their houses and two men tried to put down the fire but to no avail. after a while, the fire dept and police arrived. the fire dept. was able to put out the fire but the car's front was completely consumed. the fire inspector told me he had heard of similar stories with this car. i called chrysler corp in puerto rico and they told me i have to wait for an inspector from chrysler comes down to puerto rico and inspects the car to see if they are liable or not. meanwhile, i have to pay for a tow truck to bring the car to wherever it is they will inspect it and also, the lady who took my complaint at chrysler said if they find there was a defect, i have to wait to see what chrysler decides to do about it. i have no car, my nerves are shot and my grandmother is a nervous wreck. this is extremely frustrating waiting for chrysler to contact me to see when they will be able to inspect my car. please help!!!!*jb

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - IGNITION - SWITCH
06/01/2000
I have had ongoing problems with this vehicle in the one year i have owned it. ive spoken to the dealership and they refused to assist. i most recently had as bazzar experience the day i went to the dealership to get my house key . my key was in the ignition as i was removing key, i fet a mild shock traveling through my arm then into my watch which maintained a vibration for a log time and eventually causing it to never work again this was an odd occurence becouse i was noticing other starange thing in the vehicle .such as my odometer suddenly accumulating mialeage at a unbelivable rate prior to my scheduled repair appointment at the dealership, (for an oil leak) that ended up being a blown head gasket(that incedently was not under warrenty) becouse of the milage. ) first they claimed i was 200 miles over then someone said 14 but was finaly recorded as 7 to portfolio (my extende warranty provider.) please keep in mind that i informed the service writter of the odometer occurence and of a buzzing sound i heard in the steering wheel and other electrical experiences. all of which were just brushed off. furthermore, please note that my vehicle was under the warranty mialege when i made the appoitment and i was never told that it had to be under the mialegae when it arrived. (actually i do believe i was under the mileage when i arrived) so i ended up paying out of my own pocket approx 400.00 dollars. only to have my air bags deploy suddenly for no apparent reason,.which i feel caused me to hit the center island of a busy street, suddenl facing on comming traffic. i was able to manouvere the car over another curb to a safe area. now moss br dodge in san bernardino reuses to except responsiblity even after i had coplaid about the strange bussing sounf that could be heard in the steering wheel months before this happended. now im struggling to repair my car . please if you know of any attorney or recorse i can take please inform me. sincerely a. ayalar.*ak

On dec. 12, 2004 myself, my daughter , & her step-daughter were on our way to go shopping approximately 60 miles from home. we stopped at approximately 45 miles and ate lunch, then continued the other 15 miles. we exited the 1999 dodge stratus and entered the store. after approximately 5-10 minutes, an in-store page went out that a vehicle of our description was smoking badly. when i looked out the store window, i saw the vehicle was mine. i ran out to the parking lot to find my car (1999 dodge stratus) motor was on fire with fire coming out from underneath the motor and black smoke boiling out. by the time emergency vehicles arrived (police and fire department), my car was fully in flames. fire fighters extinguished the fire finally, but my car was totally destroyed. the hot-spot on the hood was on the driver side near the windshield. *jb
