PE10045 | DUCATI NORTH AMERICA | 11/04/2010 | 02/28/2011 | Fuel leak at pump/tank interface | 11V020000
After opening this pe, we met with subject owners, dealers, and ducati north america personnel.we learned that the subject leakage is limited to the multistrada line alone and is unrelated to composite fuel tank deformation.rather it stems from the inability of the original sealing o-ring to conform to the tank's relatively rough sealing surface.recall 11v-020 provides a new x section o-ring to address the multistrada issue and with that recall, this pe is closed for the multistrada.meanwhile, unlike the multistrada, the monster line fails to exhibit a current safety defect trend and, on that basis, this pe is closed for those models as well.
PE10045 | DUCATI NORTH AMERICA | 11/04/2010 | Fuel Tank Leak
Ducati is using a composite material in constructing fuel tanks on some motorcycle models.in some instances (the sport classic series, for example) the tank simply deforms but does not leak.however, leaks have been alleged in the subject fuel tanks when tank deformation compromises the o-ring seal between the tank and fuel pump.some owners report a pooling of fuel below the bike and/or on the engine when this occurs.web forums, too, are rife with related postings.most owners suspect the tank material is not compatiple with the ethanol found in today's highway vehicle gasoline.to learn more about this issue, odi is conducting this preliminary evaluation. |

My ducati has a plastic gas tank which has begun to expand and deform. the outside dimensions of the tank have increased and it now does not sit correctly in the frame especially on the right side, the handlebars hit it on turning, and it presses against the ignition switch. previously it opened and closed without problems, now i have to wedge it against the ignition switch to close it. the right rubber mount no longer sit on the frame and the left mount is beginning to spread too. i have not modified my motorcycle except some cosmetic changes. i have made no modifications to the fuel tank or fuel pump. i took the bike to the dealer who submitted a claim to ducati north america (the importer/factory) and they replaced the original tank. i am very concerned as to the safety of this motorcycle now. the new tank is swelling has made it so the handlebars do not turn correctly. if the tank swells enough, it will split open or become unstable on the motorcycle and i am concerned this will happen while i am riding. |
