The plastic fuel tank on my '06 ducati ps1000le deformed so much that it was at risk of falling off the bike and causing a fire. ducati replaced it with an identical tank that is having similar problems.

Noted fuel leaking where fuel pump housing attaches to composite fuel tank. fuel pump housing, connections, and fittings have never been removed or altered in any way, shape, or form by the owner of the vehicle (owned 4/12/2007 to present). issue appears be related to composite (non-metallic) fuel tank deformation over time. leaking fuel is a serious safety-issue that may cause potentially serious injury, harm, or damage to the vehicle operator, vehicle, and other persons and/or property.

On october 28, 2011, while operating my 2006 ducati sportclassic i noticed that the fuel tank was loose towards the forward part of the fuel tank. upon further inspection, i observed that the fuel tank was no longer secured by either the left-side or right-side mounting brackets attached to the vehicle frame. it is clear that the dimensions of the plastic fuel tank over time has warped or changed to such an extent as to render the two forward securing brackets ineffective in their present state. this results in the fuel tank dependent solely on a single rear mounting bolt to secure the fuel tank in place. as a consequence, it is clear that any operator of the vehicle risks injury should the fuel tank come loose or become unstable while operating the vehicle. it has also been observed that the fuel tank dimensions have over time warped to such an extent as to now impede the full use of the vehicle steering mechanism. this also results in increased risk of injury to any operator of the vehicle. it is clear that an effective, permanent solution is required of the manufacturer to address the safety issues related to this fuel tank as its present design, materials, and manufacture is defective.

Gas tank has spread and is no longer securely mounted to the motorcycle.
10/09/20092700
I purchased a 2006 ducati sportclassic from a ducati dealer in 2006, and have since put approximately 2700 miles on the bike. the motorcycle has always been garaged and premium fuel used. the motorcycle's gas tank is made of some sort of plastic or fiberglass, and so it has spread to the point where the rubber cups that are supposed to hold it to the frame on either side are no longer in place. since the tank is only held onto the frame via one screw mount, the tank can be almost completely lifted off of the frame in the front. the tank has also warped on the top right side, in a wavy pattern. due to the looseness of the tank, if this bike were to be in an accident, the tank could come off and result in a fire, possibly become a bomb. in addition to the loose tank, since it has spread on the bottom, the handle bar on the left hand side now comes into contact with the tank, which could cause an aesthetic blemish, and reduces the turning radius, in addition to possibly causing injury at slow speeds if the rider catches her hand between the bar and tank. i have contacted a dealership nearby, and they will take pictures of it, and have told me that ducati wants the dealership to shim the tank first, meaning that they would add washers on either side to try to stabilize the tank. if this is unable to be fixed, ducati *may* replace the tank with a tank of the same type of material, and the problem would happen again. if the bike, which is a 2006, is out of warranty, ducati may make me pay for the replacement tank (approx $1800), and has (to date) offered no real solution to the issue (i.e. a tank made of different material)

2006 ducati sport classic motorcycle fuel tank has expanded and warped resulting in it becoming loose from the frame.

The fuel tank on my 2006 ducati paul smart motorcycle is defective. the tank has warped to the point where it is no longer properly attached to the motorcycle's frame. this can cause serious, perhaps even fatal, injury to the rider. my ducati dealer has replaced the fuel tank under the 5 year emissions warranty. unfortunately, the tank that ducati provided is made from the exact same composite material as the one that went bad. i believe the ethanol in today's gasoline is causing this issue of tank warpage and separation. please investigate and have ducati recall all their sport classic motorcycles (which includes my 2006 paul smart model) to replace the fuel tank with one that is not affected by ethanol. note that my motorcycle has fewer than 350 miles over the 5 year period. this is a travesty on ducati's part. shame on them.

Spreading tank on my 2006 ducati paul smart sport classic motorcycle. the tanks spreads to the point where it does not fit in the mounting brackets on the frame. this causes the tanks to become dangerously loose making the motorcycle unsafe to ride. this swelling and spreading of the tank can also cause a failure if the o ring sealing the fuel petcock. this could lead to fuel leaking directly onto a hot engine or exhaust causing a fire or explosion likely to cause severe bodily injury or death.

The plastic used fuel tanks is incompatible with the motorcycles' fuel, which causes the tanks to rapidly degrade and deform and leads to a number of unsafe conditions. among other things, as the plastic degrades and deforms, the fuel tanks interfere with the full range of steering, leak fuel onto the engine, and destabilize the motorcycle's weight distribution-often to the point that the motorcycle cannot be safely operated after only a few thousand miles of use.

Like just about everyone else who owns a late model ducati with a plastic fuel tank, my tank is distorting and spreading over time. it's no longer in contact with the mounting pucks at the front of the frame, and therefore wiggles around a shifts position. my wife owns a similar model, and her tank does the exact same thing. both of our bikes are stored indoors in a climate-controlled garage, and have never been crashed or otherwise damaged. ducati knows good and well that their fuel tank designs have a problem, and they need to step up and find a permanent solution! this happens to most of their other models as well, but due to the shape of the tank on the sport classic line, the effect is much more noticeable and serious.

Fuel tank on motorcycle has expanded and buckled. it is no longer being held in place by the pucks at the front of the tank. it is only held by the single bolt at the rear of the tank and by the front fairing. the front of the tank can be lifted up off the bike. the tank shifts back and forth when riding the bike. my biggest concern is that the tank could shift and throw off my balance under hard cornering, leading to a loss of control. ducati north america (dna) has been replacing these tanks for other owners, but the replacement tanks suffer from the same issue. because of the lack of a true long term solution, i have not gone through the process of requesting a replacement yet. it would take a lot of effort, and be a short term solution at best. it seems that the culprit in this problem is ethanol in gasoline. owners who are able to purchase ethanol free gasoline have not had the same issue. ethanol does not belong in our gasoline!

I am the owner of a 2006 ducati sport 1000 sport classic. in january i noticed that the fuel tank had deformed in shape and was now unable to rest in its mounts. the fact that the fuel tank moves all around on the bike and is unsecured makes it unusable and unsafe. i have contacted ducati about this and have no heard anything from them regarding this safety issue. currently my motorcycle is unuseable as the potential for rupture or spillage while riding is very high. currently i am hearing from other owners that ducati replaces the part with the exact same piece and the issue is not resolved. i have met owners who have had two or three tanks replaced for the same issue. currently ducati is selling this model new with this issue.

I recently purchased a used 2006 ducati sport classic sport 1000 from the dealer (touring sport in greenville, sc) that sold it to the original owner and then to me. the gas tank has deformed to the point where it is no longer securely held in place on the frame. i understand this is a common known issue with this motorcycle. many other complaints for the same issue have been filed with the nhtsa. i have suffered no cataclysmic events due to this defect. however, the potential is great and i must have some resolution before i will consider the motorcycle safe to drive. thank-you.

Fuel tank on my 2006 ducati paul smart (ps1000le) has developed waves on the surface and numerous dimples. the surface is no longer uniform. also, it seem to have incresed its outside size. this is the biggest issue however. due to the tank deformation it is no longer firmly attached to the frame and can esily be moved(rocked) side to side. this is extrememly dangeorus and i am worried that if this deformation continues the tank can become disloged or crack causing a fuel leak and fire. i asked my dealer for replacement, i was refused.

Gas tank warps and deforms as air temp or pressure changes. causes loud pop and contraction of tank at fuel stops, and after a while will cause paint to bubble. ducati has already replaced the original tank after 18 months and now the second is starting to expand and contract a bit.

My plastic fuel tank expands and deforms, a phenomenon supposedly caused by a chemical reaction of the plastic tank to the ethanol in the fuel (this problem seems only to occur for the bikes that are in the united states, because other countries apparently do not have ethanol in the gas). this is a well known and well documented problem. there are over 100 complaints filed in this nhtsa site, mostly with the sport classic line, but also with the monster, hypermotard, and superbike lines as well. any of ducati

 1) the plastic gas tank has spread or deformed and no longer mounts to the motorcycle frame correctly. in the event of an accident the tank could come loose. 2) the spreading seems to be caused by fuel containing ethanol and once the tank has spread it does not return to the original shape. 3) ducati is currently replacing tanks, but for how long? they offered to replace my tank, but the replacement tank would not be autographed (the original tank is autographed which adds to the value of the motorcycle. ducati paid to have the motorcycle racer come to the us and autograph the tanks in order to sell the motorcycles - so they added the value). i still have the original, deformed tank.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) i have a 2006 ducati sport1000 motorcycle [xxx] [xxx] with a fuel tank which has become disconnected from the mounting to the frame of the motorcycle. this is due to a well known defect on ducati sport classic motorcycles, in which the fuel tank slowly spreads apart, so that the rubber mounts no longer properly engage. this is both a safety and emissions risk. this defect was documented in my motorcycle by ducati seattle on march 5, 2010, but the design flaw is known to have existed from the date of manufacture. *tr

After only 3000 miles, the gas tank warps and spreads until it is not secure on the frame. this is possibly due to gas interactions. nothing has been done by ducati. *tr

The fuel tank on my ducati motorcycle is spreading and has fallen off into frame mount on the left side and is coming close to falling off on the right side. this is a common problem on the sportclassic series. there is a potential for deformation at the fuel pump sump. i'm worried about leaks and the potential for fire. *tr

I purchased a '06 ducati sport classic sport 1000 in august 2007. it was a new old stock motorcycle. within 1 year of purchase the gas tank started to deform, and after 1 1/2 years the plastic gas tank had distorted it's shape enough to come completely off it's front mounts. the tank could be lifted straight up off the bike and the only restraint being the single bolt at the rear of the tank. ducati replaced this tank with an exact duplicate under the two year warranty. since the replacement tank is the same material as the original, i expect the spreading problem to re-occur. the problem is in the material used in the construction of the gas tank. ducati is giving us (this is a widespread and well known defect in this particular ducati product) defective tanks to replace the defective tanks already on the bikes. they need to design and produce a metal tank or one of different material that will not deform under use creating a fire hazard in the event of a crash and provide it under warranty even for those bikes like mine that are now out of the factory warranty period. this loose fuel tank issue is a serious safety hazard to anyone operating these motorcycles. *tr

I have a 2006 ducati motorcycle, model ps 1000 le. due to the material used for the gas tank, any ethanol fuel used in the tank causes the tank to deform by expanding. this expansion caused the main mounting points to expand so that they are not held by the frame brackets. the result is that the gas tank does not secure to the motorcycle. the tank expansion occurred in the summer of 2009 and the gas tank was replaced under warranty. however, the tank was replaced with the same model replacement part and has the potential to repeat the defect. *tr

I purchased a 2006 ducati sport classic motorcycle in dec 08. the plastic fuel tank started spreading apart and the tank became loose on the front mounts. ducati replaced that tank in jan 09, but the new tank has started to spread the same as the old tank. the tank is warping and can be lifted off the front mounts without undoing the bolt. i am concerned that the tank would detach in an accident and become a fire hazard. *tr

The gas tank on my 2006 ducati sport classic was spreading and warping, which made it loose from the front tabs/clamps and could be lifted from the frame. i just received a replacement tank from ducati about 2 weeks ago. however, i found out that this tank is no different from the previous defective one, which means that it will eventually spread and warp again making it unsafe. i purchased this ducati on september 1, 2007, used. the warping began around the 9000 mile mark. it now has a little over 10000 miles. *tr

Within 2 months of purchase of my motorcycle the gas tank spread. this means the plastic gas tank distorted it's shape enough to come completely off it's mount on the right side of the gas tank. ducati is replacing this tank with an exact duplicate. since the replacement tank is the same material as the original, i expect the spreading problem to re-occur. the problem is in the material used in the construction of the gas tank. ducati is giving us defective tanks to replace the defective tanks already on the bikes. i am on my third tank replacement. the ducati dealership kept giving me the run around until finally they agreed to do the third replacement. *tr

The gas tank has started to deform and does not mount properly to the motorcycle. this is the second time that this has occurred and was replaced at no cost by the ducati dealer. this second tank the dealer is giving me a bit of hesitation and wants to shim the tank. i believe shimming will not stop the tank from spreading and will eventually be a bigger problem. *tr

My motorcycle is a 2006 ducati sport 1000 which has a plastic gas tank which has begun to expand and deform. the outside dimensions of the tank have increased and it now does not sit correctly in the frame. the rubber mounts no longer sit on the frame. i have made no modifications to the fuel tank or fuel pump. in the first quarter of 2008 i took the bike to the dealer who submitted a claim to ducati north america (the importer/factory) and they authorized the replacement of the tank with a new one, which was fitted at that time. i was not given a reason. within one year the new tank started to expand and deform in the same way. so i just recently took it to another ducati dealer. they got me another replacement tank, which was fitted 2 weeks ago. they told me the tanks have not changed and ducati has not come up with a solution for this problem (i.e. new tank design, or different materials used in its construction) other than repeatedly replacing the tanks with the same type as they expand/deform. i am very concerned as to the safety of this motorcycle. the tank's swelling makes it very loose. if the tank swells enough i am concerned that it might split open while i am riding and cause an accident and/or life endangering fire. *tr

A newly purchased ducati sport classic motorcycle, purchased from an authorized ducati dealer in march of 2006, is exhibiting out of spec gas tank expansion, which is creating unsafe mounting onto motorcycle frame. that is, the gas tank is warping out of shape and no longer securely mounted onto frame. no owner abuse, accidents, or extreme exposure to the elements has caused this gas tank warpage. this appears to be a factory defect. *tr

I own a 2006 ducati sport classic motorcycle. the gas tank is plastic and the tank is spreading apart from the mounting brackets to the point where the brackets do not engage the tank any longer. i am very concerned that this is a safety problem as the tank could separate from the motorcycle. i read on owner forums that this is a very common problem that the manufacturer has so far failed to address. i also read that this was being investigated by nhtsa and that i should file a complaint. i first observed this condition in september 2008 and it has continued to worsen. *tr

The plastic fuel tank on my 2006 ducati paul smart 1000 motorcycle is spreading in width, so that it no longer sits securely on the mounts that attach it to the vehicle. the top of the fuel tank is also becoming dimpled, was smooth when new. i suspect it may the polymer used in the fuel tank reacting badly with the ethanol we have in usa gasoline. *tr

I own a 2006 paul smart 1000le, from the sport classic line by ducati. the gas tank, which is made from some sort of plastic has begun to spread apart and is not connected to its mooring points. based on what i have read on www.ducati.ms, this appears to be a manufacturing defect in these tanks, and i am worried that it may fall off while riding and perhaps even start a fire. it is my understanding that others have gotten replacement tanks only to have the same spreading occur. *tr

Plastic gas tank has deformed causing it to become unattached from the two front mounts. only thing holding tank to motorcycle is one bolt in rear. obvious bulge in top of tank from the deformation. plastic may crack and allow gas to escape and leak over engine which is directly below the tank. *tr

The fuel tank is loose on the front mounts almost to the point that it can be lifted up off the frame. i shimmied the mounts outward from the frame with washers a year ago to hold the tank tight, but it is again loosening. it appears the plastic fuel tank is distorting and getting wider over time. i feel this is a safety issue that should be addressed by the manufacturer as the tank could separate from the motorcycle and cause an explosion or fire even in a low speed crash or drop of the machine. *tr

1.) i bought a 2006 ducati sport classic 2.) the gas tank bulges and deforms (apparently with temperature) and does not always seat in the mounting brackets as the tanks shape changes. i am concerned the expanding/contracting material will eventually fatigue to the point of leaking gasoline. 3.) dealer told me ducati north america is aware of the issue but they aren't doing anything about it but i could purchase another (similarly flawed) gas tank for $1900 that will do the same thing. *tr

Plastic gas tank on motorcycle is wider than the factory mounting which is supposed to hold it in place. if you shift the tank it can be lifted out of the cups that are supposed to hold it down. then only the rear mount of the tank keeps it in place. pointed out problem to dealer and checked 2 new exact same models (but newer) in showroom and the tanks can be lifted upwards on a brand new bike that hasn't even got gas in it yet. i'm monitoring mine for now. dealer doesn't feel it is a problem yet. i'm unsure at this time, but there are many questions surrounding this problem on how much spreading is 'allowable and why are the tanks growing wider over time. watching for other defects reported in club network. personally i think gas tanks from at least the model year i'm reporting should be recalled. if this gas tank ever splits open from spreading it would create a major fire hazard while stationary or injury or death while riding the motorcycle. honestly have not heard any reports yet of tanks splitting yet, getting wider over time, developing bumps, and pimples all stemming from gasoline inside the tanks. *tr

Plastic gas tank on 2006 ducati sport classic motorcycle does not hold shape. becomes free of rubber mounts and can rub against frame, etc. also can be struck by controls in tight turn. bought bike new 11/06. tank replaced by ducati 12/07, second tank replaced 11/08. no change in product or issue - now out of warranty and just as unsafe. *tr

Motorcycle was purchased new in september 2007; fuel tank was fitted snugly against the frame at that time. in spring 2007, i noticed the fuel tank had about 3cm of play from side to side on the frame due to the plastic spreading where it attaches to the center frame with two brackets that rest on bushings. on an internet message board, i found that many people had the same issue. some had the tank replaced under warranty, only to have the second tank spread the same way. for others, the dealer had simply shimmied the brackets that hold the tank in front. i performed this fix myself, but i'm concerned it will not stop the deformation of the tank and could be a safety issue. *tr

The material of the fuel tank on my 2006 ducati sport 1000 seems unstable over time. the surface shows bubbles (blisters) and dimples and the tank seems to be growing. when new, at full steering lock left or right, none of the controls on the handlebars would hit / touch / interfere with the tank. now, both sides do. in addition, cracks are developing in the recessed area of the tank where the filler-cap resides. i have brought this issue to the attention of the dealership where i've brought this motorcycle and they acknowledge the problem. four weeks ago, they have ordered a new tank under warranty, but i have not yet received this replacement. my concern is that the new tank will develop the same problem over time, as the people at the dealership indicated that the material and production-process for these replacement tanks is no different than for the original ones. *tr

Motorcycle: 2006 ducati sport classic 1000-gas tank gets loose and no longer fits brackets. the gas tank is not holding its molded shape and continues to get worse, while spreading away from its mounting bushings and brackets under the front of gas tank. this can cause paint bubbling, possible leakage of fuel and a fuel tank that ultimately fall off during riding. highly dangerous. the original gas tank has already been replaced under warranty with the same problem 2 years ago. now im seeing the same problem again and fear of replacing again, since my warranty has expired and a new gas tank cost about $1700. *tr

I purchased a 2006 ducati sport classic 1000 motorcycle new, and within a couple of months noted the fuel tank shifted in position and found it had an inch or so of slop on it's front tank mounts. it is close to coming completely out of it's mounts and is a danger/safety hazard. the tank appears to have spread out and is made of plastic. distortion of the tank is noted on the top surface as well, which may also be the result of the spreading tank and also may be caused by substandard materials ducati is using for these fuel tanks. *tr

In regards to my 2006 ducati sport classic ps1000le, the factory plastic gas tank was replaced under warranty in 11/2007 due to deformation issues. the deformation caused the front underside of the tank to spread apart thereby no longer connecting to the front mounting brackets. essentially the tank was no longer properly secured to the frame except for 1 bolt at the rear. now 1 year later, the replacement tank is again deforming in the same manner and the tank connection points are no longer reaching the tank support brackets on the frame. the motorcycle is outside of it's 2 year warranty period and this repair is not longer covered. it is a serious safety concern for me and i feel that ducati n.a should offer a redesigned tank replacement for this application. *tr

I am writing to you regarding a dangerous running condition of my ducati motorcycle, a 2006 ducati 800ss . the problem is that the fuel tank is rusting away internally even though it is always parked with a full tank of fuel. the rusting fuel tank keeps clogging the fuel filter and renders the bike unsafe to ride. it will run normally and then when it clogs, it will lose power which can be very dangerous on the road. the filter has been changed several times. in the emissions warranty on pages 85-87 in the owner's manual it states that the fuel tank is part of the emissions equipment and is warranted for a period of 5 years and/or 30,000 kms. my bike has only 3000 miles on it and is properly maintained and stored. ducati north america has refused warranty coverage of the gas tank, stating that a rusting tank does not cause emissions problems, ignoring the fact that it is causing a hazardous riding condition by causing the engine to lose power. but the tank is part of the emissions equipment, and it is failing, and soon enough when there is enough rust it will leak. this will also result in the possibility of a fire and an accident should this happen. i do not understand why they are refusing the warranty as it seems that this is an obvious safety and emissions issue and i am extremely disappointed with their decision. i appreciate anything that you can do to help me in this situation. p.s. the bike selected in your drop down menu, sport classic, is not my bike. my bike is a supersport but that was not offered as a choice. *tr

2006 ducati sport classic; re: defective gas tank, swells and deforms until it effects steering (actually gets in way of handle bar and comes off front mounts leaving only one bolt holding down the rear). seems to be a manufacturing problem as many owners of this model are complaining about the same thing on online forums. ducati will replace a tank once it swells or deforms to a certain level but the replacement will soon start to do the same.
