PE06005FLEETWOOD ENTERPRISES, INC.01/20/200605/02/2006INADVERTENT SLIDE-OUT EXTENSION MOVEMENT
This investigation was opened based on odi's receipt of a congressional letter on behalf of a constituent.the constituent reported incidents where the slide out room of his motor home would inadvertently move (extend) during highway use.odi was concerned that a fully extended slide out would degrade the vehicle's dynamic handling characteristics and/or possibly impact an object or another vehicle, resulting in a crash.odi contacted fleetwood and discovered that slide out rooms were installed in motor homes, travel trailers and folding trailers. as part of the investigation odi visited a rv show and the fleetwood paxinos plant to examine slide outs in various new make and model vehicles and gain an understanding of how the systems work.during the investigation odi learned that there are two methods used to extend slide out rooms.some manufacturers use hydraulic systems and others, such as fleetwood, use an electric motor.  Driver information center displays various warning messages, low brake air pressure and similar messages during vehicle operation. mounting location of the unit makes it impossible to read the display from the drivers location. attempting to see the warning message diverts attention from the road and is hazardous and could lead to an accident. full time light of the display has been done but has not improved the situation. manufacturer has said they have no further solutions. remounting of the display should be done do that it is readily visible from the driver's location. information center is provided by freightliner but mounted in the dash by fleetwood.*ak

I have a 2004 fleetwood discovery motorhome that has se-gi windows. these window seals are broken and they are fogging up very badly. all of the windows are impossible to see out of when the sun is directly on them. the drivers side window is so bad it is difficult to see my mirror. when the sun is directly on it i can't even see my mirror. this in turn makes it very unsafe when changing lanes and backing up. since this is such a grave safety issue something must be done so i can safely drive my motor home. numerous rv owners have had the very same problem with these windows, so i would think that an investigation and a recall would be required. your assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Fleetwood installed faulty dual pane windows in several years of rv's that get foggy between the sealed panes of glass. these windows are used throughout the motorhome including the drivers side window. the drivers view to the outside rearview mirror in obstructed and creates a dangerous situation because the view is distorted. the state of missouri requires an annual safety inspection and this rv will no longer pass this inspection because of the obscured view to the outside from the drivers seat. i have attempted to have this problem fixed under warranty but fleetwood refuses because the problem is over 3 years old, i contend the problem started well within the warranty period and has gotten worse. i also contend there are many rv's with this problem on the road some of which fleetwood has repaired under warranty and some they have not regardless of the timing of the repair in relationship to the warranty period. i also contend that auto glass should not distort the view for safety reasons ever, safety glass is regulated by this agency as far as i know and i believe this is a defective product that will cause an accident because the drivers view is obscured. i am dating this complaint today but the problem started about 18 months ago and has gotten worse. i have ran a basic survey of fleetwood owners and found many others with the same problem. i spoke to the manufacturer of these windows se-gi in august '07 about this and they confirmed they had a manufacturing problem a few years ago with the dual pane windows, but it was resolved now i continue to find other owners with these vehicles and windows that are having problems. i feel there should be an investigation and upon the same findings as i have a recall should be enforced. this is a dangerous problem and fleetwood is not taking responsibility for it.

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 fleetwood discovery. the contact stated that the thurmopainted glass on the windows were full of spots. he notified the dealer and they stated that the spots were filled with gas and were leaking, which caused the windows to become very foggy. the dealer advised him to notify the manufacturer of the windows to have them replaced. the manufacturer stated that since the vehicle was out of warranty, the contact would be responsible for the replacement. the vehicle has not been repaired. the current mileage was 20,000 and failure mileage was 17,000.
