This investigation was opened based on odi's receipt of a congressional letter on behalf of a constituent.the constituent reported incidents where the slide out room of his motor home would inadvertently move (extend) during highway use.odi was concerned that a fully extended slide out would degrade the vehicle's dynamic handling characteristics and/or possibly impact an object or another vehicle, resulting in a crash.odi contacted fleetwood and discovered that slide out rooms were installed in motor homes, travel trailers and folding trailers. as part of the investigation odi visited a rv show and the fleetwood paxinos plant to examine slide outs in various new make and model vehicles and gain an understanding of how the systems work.during the investigation odi learned that there are two methods used to extend slide out rooms.some manufacturers use hydraulic systems and others, such as fleetwood, use an electric motor.  When driving my 2003 american tradition motor coach the adjustable pedals, brake and the accelerator are so close together that when i hit the brake and then get back on the accelerator pedal i find my self hitting the brake pedal again because these pedals are only one inch apart. spartan has separated these pedals on the 2004 & 2005 models by three inches . i think for safety issues there should be some changes made to these 2003 models.*ak
STEERING - GEAR BOX (OTHER THAN RACK AND PINION)

I have a 2003 terra class a motorhome on a workhorse p-32 chassis, coach added by fleetwood rv mfg co. this unit wanders from side to side constantly while driving. workhorse has tried to correct by extensive repairs, but not successful. they claim wandering is normal! fleetwood will not accept responsibility either. i have been informed by three(3) rv dealerships in the area that aftermarket stabilizers will correct the wandering as well as provide protection from loss of steering control in case of a tire blowout. i would venture a guess that most rv owners art middle-aged to elderly, who may not have fighter-pilot reflexes. it seems that the addition of the coach upsets the stability of the chassis. why are'nt both manufacturers held responsible for producing a vehicle that steers correctly. i have driven many trucks of all sizes and loadings, and they steer properly. thank you. *ak
STRUCTURE - FRAME AND MEMBERS

The particle board flooring on travel trailers deteriorate causing the moldings to fall off while on the road. this is the fourth trailer i've owned that has had this problem. the moldings are installed with the sealant on the bottom of the trailer. water runs down the exterior walls and is retained and absorbed by the particle board floor which is not water resistant. as the floor deteriorates pieces of the flooring and the moldings fall off. some of the molding pieces are up to 8 feet long. one of my concerns is as the floor deteriorates and softens, a person could go through the floor or the walls could fall down while the trailer is on the road. *tr
SUSPENSION
1
Complaint regarding inspections on suspensions and safety braking systems on fleetwood folding trailers. *mr the vehicle was purchased new. while driving the vehicle had considerable amounts of sway which made it difficult to drive the vehicle. it was later found that a shackle bolt had fallen out and another one was never torqued properly which caused excessive play. the four bolts holding the axle to the leaf spring were improperly torqued. about six mainframe cross body truss supports were missing weld to the frame and body near the wheel well. the wheel retainer nuts were loose. the tongue retainer locking jaw had large burrs/flashing that dug into the receiver ball. the consumer believes the dealer and manufacturer should perform consistent inspections of the suspension system of newly delivered products prior to the consumer taking possession of the vehicle. (fleetwood utah 2003). *nlm
