 96v071000; consumer states that ford repaired the problem. then 16 months later, driving to a friends house, parked the vehicle and it cut off, and the van was smoking. flames were visible under the hood, vehicle burned for 5 to 10 minutes before the fire could be put out. vehicle was totalled. fire department had to cut cables from the battery to keep the vehicle from reigniting, insurance company is doing an investigation. ford states that they are not responsible for the parts that were put in, and cannot duplicate the problem. *ak

 I owned a 1991 ford aerostar which burst into flames and was destroyed. i have been bounced around trying to get satisfactions but since there was an ongoing class action law suit have not received any compensation. the consumers wife noticed smoke coming from the steering column. the consumer pulled over, ran to call the fire department, but by the time he returned the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. updated 04/14/10.*jb

 Vehicle was in the park position for 15 to 20 min when the vehicle caught on fire in the wiring harness and the ignition switch. consumer stated the recall was corrected. fire department determined the fire as an electrical fire.*ak consumer turned the vehicle off removed the key which meant the gear shifter should have been locked in park. the consumer son moved the gear shift out of park and it rolled into other vehicle.
