I have a 1995 ford contour and just found out all along there was a campaign on the wiring harness in the engine compartment . this is very unsafe and is causing the car to act erraticaly it is a fire hazard due to the fact the wiring harness is frayed if i touch any of the wires the insulation just falls off what hasnt already fell off. engine dies and stalls all the time and car is un drivable called ford and they said there was a campain and recall on wiring harness . but is unavailable now but i could buy one for $1300.00 it has caught small fire due to this.

I have a 1995 ford contour which has a faulty wiring harness that led to vehicle problems. after research on the internet i found that a recall (99m03) was issued for faulty wires. my car was not included in that recall even though it has the same problem that was mentioned in the recall. why were not all of the cars with this defect recalled? *tr

I took my 1995 ford contour in to my local perry lincoln ford dealer, on hitchcock st., in santa barbara, ca--today (10/12/09. i stated to the repairman that i noticed, on the internet, that the '95 ford contours had been recalled for ignition fires. i told him that my ignition switch heats up, every time i drive it, even a short distance of 3 miles to work, every day. i told him that the ignition switch gets so hot, that my key is too hot to handle!! the entire driver's wheel component, that includes the ignition switch, gets hot. the repairman, at ford, took my vin no.; and researched my car, on his ford computer; and my vin no. did not show a recall. i told him, i thought the recall was for all 1995 ford contours, not just some. do i have to wait for a fire to start, in the ignition switch, before anything is done about it? i am a working registered nurse; and would rather prevent a fire than wait for one to burn my face and body; and destroy my entire car. the ford repairman did nothing about my concerns. he just said there has been no recall on my particular car!!! what can i do to protect myself from injury and harm, especially since my ignition switch, car key--and entire driver's wheel device overheats? all your 4 questions, below and to the right of this box are cut off except for the approx. incident date!!! your questionnaire also does not allow me to choose ignition switch for the defective part!! *tr

This was an owner notification or a ford recall (not ordered by the fed gov.) number 99m03, wherein ford replaced under warranty the main wiring harness on 1995 ford contour vehicles. this is a safety issue and has not been performed on this particular vehicle. i purchased the vehicle after the notification to owners expired and wish to have ford stand by their warranty and complete this task under the warranty/recall. *tr

While driving to the store one evening as it was getting dark i noticed that my instrument panel was dark. i asked my boyfriend to get out and check if i had tail lights (remembering my sister had a similar problem when i was little) indeed i didn't have tail lights or dash lights and when the switch was turned to just have parking lights on they didn't work either. however i still had turn signals, headlights, hazard lights and brake lights. we tested fuses and consulted a parts store with the problem, finally my boyfriend took apart the headlight switch where he found the wiring harness was partially melted.....he tried to bend the little prongs back so they would make connection with the switch again and put everything back together and now my lights work. i am however ordering new parts for my car and the sales man said that it was odd to have a problem there since it was a low heat area and suggested looking on nhtsa for recalls due to this problem. *tr

My 1995 ford contour was repaired under the recall when the engine cooling fan and wiring harness burned up. however they replaced only that part of the wiring harness that is directly connected with engine cooling fans, the rest of the underhood wiring is failing due to overheating causing the insulation to break down. i had to replace the connector to the engine temperature sensor because it has turned into a soft gelatin like substance causing shorts. i believe the entire underhood wiring harness should have been replaced when the fans caught on fire. currently there is a shorter maybe an open circuit in the engine wiring causing the check engine light to come on and stay on at times but it sets no trouble codes. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1995 ford contour. while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle lost power. the contact coasted to the side of the road until coming to a complete stop. the vehicle would not restart and was towed to a local mechanic. the mechanic informed him that there was an electric fuel injection failure, resulting from installation particles becoming detached from the electrical wiring. the contact researched recalls on his vehicle and realized that he was experiencing the same failures described in nhtsa campaign id number 00v367000 (engine and engine cooling). ford stated that his vin was not included in the recall. the vehicle has not been repaired. the failure and current mileages were 150,000.

The car has trouble starting or will not start. this happens intermittently and we cannot predict when the car will not crank/start. you turn the key and nothing happens; it does not crank or make any noise at all. if you park the car and go inside, return and try to start the car, sometimes it does not start. this has happened many times. sometimes, if you wait 20-30 minutes, the car will start up, but you cannot be sure. the car has been scoped and various repairs have been made, but the problem persists, and since the non-cranking episodes happen sporadically, they have not isolated or corrected the problem. the frequency of non-cranking episodes is increasing and the wait time to try to restart the car is now up to 1 hour. the car is not safe to drive because no one can predict when the car will not start or when it will stop. yesterday, the car stopped while my husband was driving it into the driveway. this has not happened before, so the problem is getting worse. the electrical system, the starter/ignition system or solenoids, etc., seem to be defective. ford motor service centers have not been able to diagnose and correct the problem. we need someone with expertise to diagnose and correct the problem.*ak

I had the heater blower fixed under warranty on feb1,2000. on nov 17 2000, i had it replaced again at my own cost. on jan 24, 2001 i had it fixed again. this time i had to replace the fuse box junction panel as well. this has been fixed three time in the last 12 months. everyone i know who owns a contour has had this problem. i don't think i should have to pay for a known defect like this. they wouldn't fix it under the recall the last two times because i had over 72000 miles on it and i spent over 300.00 of my money on it the last two times. thank you for you time

The heater and ac fan first failed at 34,000 miles and was repaired under warranty. the fan motor (under hood) and fan controls (under dash) were both chared. the same routine occured somewhere between 60 and 80 000 miles. that time the dealership said there was a new repair kit for this defect only since it was out of warranty i would have to pay for it. i did.. this fall the fan quit again. almost the same time we received a letter from ford announcing a recall for the heater wiring. after installing the components the dealer said the fan started then quit. checking their work the decided everything was correct so they chased the wires back to the fuse box. there they couldn't find anything wrong until they pulled the fuse box and the entire underside was charred. when i think of the number of time i brought gas for my lawnmower home in the cat it frightens me. there could have been a real fire. it might have been due to the original problem just not found until now.

This vehicle was subject of recall for throttle link cable. ignition/plug cables also failed and had to be replaced. the speedometer/odometer cable that failed failed because of a link. this leads to a question about the overall fitness of cables that ford is using on this vehicle. i've never before heard of a non-traumatic failure of a speedometer/odometer cable at under 100,000 miles. i am not sure of dates or mileage as submitted. this happened a while ago, and i only saw notification of your website on a public bus this evening (8 feb). please investigate and let me know if this is a common problem. i've long since replaced the speedometer/odometer cable and have learned my lesson. never again will i buy a ford motor company product. *ak

*tr

I own a 1995 ford contour gl that was purchased new. i recently opened the hood to find that the electrical wiring insulation is brittle and falling apart and exposing the bare wire. this may cause a fire if two of the exposed wires touch and create a spark. i talked to ford motor company who told me that a customer satisfaction bulletin was send out in 1999. this should be a safety recall and not a service bulletin. the bulletin expires at 100,000 miles or 10 years after warranty. the wiring is made so that when the vehicle reaches a certain age, the plastic will fall off and the metal wires can be recycled. the cars are known to mechanics at fords dealerships as throwaway cars after ten years, because of the bio-degradable wiring. *nm

1995 ford contour recall letter #99m03 issued oct.1999. i purchased car apr.2001 without knowledge of this recall. mileage when purchased, 98,042. mileage when wiring harness was determined as problem, 121,869. i have receipts for parts and labor that was not necessary due to this problem. there is a total of 20 recalls as of jan. 1995 on my vin number. ford motor states recall #99m03, is not considered a safety recall and expires at 100,000 miles. other recalls extend to 150,000 miles because they are considered customer satisfaction courtesy. the car was manufactured and sold with a wiring harness defect and several other defects. because i purchased the car used i was not aware of all defects. i believe ford should be responsible for their defective products and not force the second owner of the car to pay for their mistakes. the car doesn't start but all light and warning signals come on, the windshield wipers won't turn off and door locks or windows don't work. the defective wiring harness has caused damage to the motor as well. boyd's automotive will verify damage to the vehicle due to the wiring harness, and unnecessary expenses paid before discovery of defect(s). texas department of transportation motor vehicle division, enforcement section and the texas department of transportation motor vehicle division, consumer affairs section, referred my complaint to you because of the numerous recalls. *jb

Ford's contour and its sister car the mercury mystique have defective wire harnesses. the wire shields crack causing shorts, which lead to mechanical break downs and can lead to engine fires. ford issued an owner notification program #99m03, which admits to this problem and extends coverage to notified individuals but limits the term of coverage. wire harnesses are not a normal wear component and should not fall apart for no reason. hundreds of thousands of these vehicles are on the road and have not been repaired. ford has expressed no interest in helping notify consumers. further, ford's dealers are unable to locate replacement harnesses. *tr

Ford owner notification program 99m03 describes, and offers to fix for free, a problem in which engine wiring harness insulation rots due to certain environmental factors. program involves a warranty extension to 10 years beyond original warranty, or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. symptoms of the problem vary widely. in my case, the car just shut down while driving. while there were no injuries, this was an obvious safety hazard. if it had happened on the interstate instead of on a side road, the result could have been disastrous. in response to this problem, ford issued 99m03, which they call an owner notification program. the problem is that, according to my own experience, and according to the personnel at my local dealer's service department, owners were not notified unless they brought the car in for something that turned out to be caused by the wiring harness problem. this program needs to be elevated to a recall so that all owners are aware of the risks and are able to take appropriate action to protect themselves. *nm

( total lost) it is fabrication defect , the car has only 45,000. why it is not a recall ? the affected customers were not told the car will expire in 2005! because nobody will pay the car value to fix it! i should keep driving until the short circuit comes ! would you be comfortable with your daughter driving this car? i believe it is not fair! ford should fix the problem if the car has less than 100,000 m at least! currently i have lights turning on by themselves on my dashboard!*jb

1995 ford contour. recall 99m03 (underhood wiring harness) was completed by ford dealership october 2000. in 2003 and since, check engine light comes on, abs light comes on, blows fuses randomly, finally the steering column started smoking and the wiring caught fire. after inspection, it appears ford only replaced part of the wiring harness on the recall, not the entire harness as the invoice shows. part of the wiring appears in very good shape, while some sections of the harness are frayed, insulation is falling off, and bare wire is exposed. if this is the norm and not just an individual incident, it is a very misleading and dangerous deception. it would appear they only patched a problem that was, for safety's sake suppose to be replaced. the invoice that was provided when repairs were done, does indicate that the entire harness was, in fact replaced. the bottom line is, ford has failed to repair what can potentially be a very dangerous problem. they only patched the problem. now the only option available to the consumer is to replace the entire harness, because ford does not make sections of the harness available. the wiring harness on an automobile is not something that an owner should have to be concerned with failing. of all the automobiles that currently reside in salvage yards, most of which are considerably older than a 1995 contour, i would suspect that a very small percent are there because of a wiring harness failure. i still have the entire harness, photos of the harness, and the invoice where the work was done. the vehicle will not run until the abs section is replaced. as i stated before, the only way to repair the car is to purchase the entire harness from ford, which i have not yet been able to do. if this was common practice, ford needs to go back and replace the sections that were not replaced. after all that is what the invoice shows they did. thank you for your time.

Several instances of the car shutting off with no prior warning. i found out that ford motor company used the wrong wiring in the engine compartment. the wiring that was used can not withstand the environmental conditions that it is exposed to heat. ford motor is well aware of this engineering deficiency and issued a campaign, not a recall on the wiring, that will cover consumers for 10 years from the date of original owners purchase or 100000 miles. ford informed me that even though they are aware they will not repair the problem unless complaints about the wiring or related symptons are made. this is malicious act on behalf of the ford co to their consumers. possible consequences of not issuing a true recall could result in but not limited to the following brief listing: 1) fire resulting in severe injury or death of occupants from arcing wires dues due to broken, cracked, and damaged insulation. 2) crash resulting in death to the occupants of the vehicle and/or other vehicle(s) involved due to unexpected stalling of vehicle on roadway. 3) crash resulting in severe injury or property damage due to unexpected stalling of vehicle while being operated. to summarize people can die, be paralyzed or severly injured because of ford's desire to save money and deny responsibility for their manufacturing/ engineering flaws. a simple campaign is not acceptable and should be a safety recall to protect the consumer which could eventually become innocent victims. ford installed the incorrect wiring on the assembly line and tne after becoming aware of the defect did the very minimum to correct the issue. they need to be held accountable for this deficiency for the life of the car. automobile wiring specifications is not new technology and to make a mistake of that magnitude can not be overlooked. *ak

1995 ford contour was pulled out of one of our garages and into another one. got out of car went inside - someone walking by saw a fire in the garage. this blaze almost burned down our building. the car is a total loss and found out it was the wiring harness.ford wont back their product even though we found out there was a recall on the wiring harness. we are totally getting the run around from fords so called customer service. they wont do anything because of the miles on the car are over 100,00. quality is job 1 with ford is a joke. they knew these cars are starting fires. lucky it didnt kill someone in the fire. it took 4 men to put out this fire. i have seen all over internet and national news stories about this exact same problem. i guess cause there has not been enought fatalities to fix their product. this wiring harness almost burned down our business - would ford pay it - no way - i told customer service i was going to put this burned joke of a car on our front lot and write on the windshield quality is job 1 if you dont burn up in one of our vehicles.!! i want a resolution to this matter!!!!*ak

My car stalled on me back in march of this year, and when it was looked at a garage, they told me it was a faulty engine wiring harness on my 1995 ford contour. i looked around on the internet, and saw that there was indeed a recall on this same harness. i never received a notice from ford about it. i contacted the local ford dealer, and they verified that there was indeed a recall on it, and to bring it in to have the work done. i then had the car towed there to have it fixed. after they had it for about three or four days, i went back to check on it, and they said that they couldn't work on it, because it was five thousand miles over their recall warranty. i had the car towed back home, and called ford themselves. i got the same runaround from them also. i notified them that i never received the recall notice on it, and they basically told me sorry, it wasn't their fault. i have found several message boards on the internet, that people complain of the same problem, and it seems that ford, knowing there is a safety problem with it, should fix it no matter what. the wiring harness on the car is completely burned through, and most all of the wires are bare, and exposed. i was told from a dealership, that if i wanted to have the work done myself, the harness would cost around $1200, just for the part. i found this website, and was hoping, maybe i could get someone to help me out in getting ford to fix a known problem on their vehicle. thank you. *jb

The problem is in the wiring harness under the hood. the outer coating cracked causing the wires to melt. this is a known problem by ford motor company they did a recall on it --the recall number is 99m03. ford will not honor the recall due to the fact the car was listed as salvage but the reasons for salvage had nothing to do with the recall issue. the wires have worked fine for the past 3 years and they are the original wires and harness. *jb

Consumer states the vehicle developed what was diagnosed as transmission problems, it was suggested that the transmission be serviced, soon after, the vehicle began performing poorly and the transmission was then replaced entirely, after less that 500 miles the vehicle began experiencing electrical problems, the alternator, battery and relay was replaced, however there was no improvement with the vehicle, the dealer then informed consumer that the actual problem was the engine wiring harness that was causing all the problems and that ford had issued a secret warranty regarding the problem, however consumer had missed the deadline.*jb

The underhood wiring harness on this vehicle displays areas where the insulation is completely gone and/or flaking off. this leaves bare wires that are shorting out. this includes the negative and positive battery cables, which could cause the battery to explode when shorted. it also includes the wiring to the crash sensors for the airbag system. this means that if the wiring to the safing sensor (under the dash) is also shorted out and the wiring to one of the crash modules shorts out, then the airbag(s) could deploy. not very welcome if you happen to be driving down the road at 70 mph. ford has been contacted about this and had issues their own recall, but it expired at 100000 miles. the original owners of this vehicle never received the recall notice, although they did receive recall notices on both sides of this notice. fords current response is that you have to get a wiring harness from a junkyard as they no longer have them available, however they have a price of 2500.00 for one. the problem with getting one from a junkyard is that they are all displaying this problem.*ak

The underhood wiring harness in this car has been recalled by ford for replacement. however the recall expired at 100,000 miles. the previous owner of this vehicle indicates that they never received the recall notice. in addition, a subsequent recall was performed on this vehicle and the dealer never mentioned the problem with the wiring harness. all insulation on the wiring harness is either off or cracked and coming off. this leaves totally bare and exposed wiring which can arc, short out (causing other problems). there are areas where bare wiring is routed right next to gas lines and should a leak occur and a spark the results could be catastrophic. fords response was that since the car was beyond the mileage limit and this was their recall (not nhtsa's) they weren't required to perform the repairs. one has only to look under the hood and see how dangerous this situation is. *ak
