I have a 1992 ford crown victoria. we took a trip to fl and on the way back home to sc i hhad the the cruise control on. we was on i95 and all of a sudden the gas peddel just went straight to the floor. my car would not slow down or stop. the cruise control would not turn off. we reached very high speeds at time and the traffic was bad. the only way we stopped was that my husband truned the key off and we coasted by the time we did stop my brakes was smoken. this is not suppose to happen. we let the car cool for a while then checked the brakes and got back on the road and with in the next 5 min it did it again. we didn't even turn on the cruise control this time. but it acted like it was on. so we had to turn the key off again and coast. if we put it in n the engine just reved up really high. finaly my husband found the fuse for the cuise control and took it out. we did get home safley but if this would have happend on a regular road other then i95 i dont know what would have happen. so is there a recall on this. i have found in the owners connection that there is a recall on my car for a speed control. is this the same.?? when i called the 1800 number they said ther was not such recall. ??? why?? if it is listed why is there not recall? the recall number is nhtsa recall no 99v124/ford recall no. 99s15. please contact me either way? this was very scarry. i dont know what i would have done if my husband had not been in the car. thank you rox ann

Received recall notice for speed control deactivation switch after fire completely destroyed two cars and home plus contents. homeowners insurance hired private fire investigaor firm to determine fire cause and origin. private company ruled fire an arson. however, state fire marshall and local police/fire departments could not determine cause because of extensive damage but ruled no foul play was suspected. car insurance never privately investigated but took possession of remains of both cars. hope this information can prevent any other owners from having extensive loss. car possibly started fire, upon reading recall notice. make recall and replacement of these speed switches mandatory for safety reasons.

I parked my 1992 ford crown victoria on the street while i was at my home for 45 minutes. i decided to leave to go somewhere else. when i got to my car, i smelled burning and saw wisps of smoke coming from underneath my engine area. i quickly opened my driver's side door and smelled smoke and popped the hood. inside, there was a small fire (grapefruit size) in front of the steering column. i ran into the house and got some water and doused the flames. i was very lucky, because i seem to have caught the fire within a few minutes of when it started. i took the car into my local ford dealership, and the problem was the cruise control deactivation switch. they replaced the cruise control switch and a wiring harness that had burned (at my expense). they informed me that the problem was fixed. i called ford to discuss this issue, and they informed me that my car was under recall back in 1999, and the problem was fixed on 7/7/1999 when my dad owned the car. this was actually even more concerning to me, because the replacement switch, which supposedly fixed the original spontaneous combustion problem, seems to be defective as well!! so my car is now on its second fixed cruise control switch. i am also concerned from my discussion with the nhtsa representative. he said that no recalls can be issued for vehicles that are over 10 years old. he then told me that my complaint would not do anything since my car was over 10 years old. i don't expect to be reimbursed from my experience with the fire, however, this is disturbing to me knowing that my complaint could be dismissed out of hand. i want to make sure that others don't have this same problem. especially when dealing with a car setting itself on fire when it is not running. this complaint should be thoroughly evaluated before dismissing it. if the car had been parked in my garage while i slept, it could have easily burned down the house, or killed someone. *nm
