PE02071 | FORD MOTOR COMPANY | 10/01/2002 | 01/27/2003 | CNG TANK EXPLODING IN A FIRE
An explosion of a compressed natural gas (cng) tank should not be able to occur, as the tank is fitted with a pressure relief device (prd). this prd should release the cng in the tank, prior to the pressure reaching the tank burst pressure.the prd did not release in the subject wisconsin police cruiser explosion.nhtsa has recovered the prd valve from the tank that exploded and testing will be necessary to establish why this tank safety valve did not release in the very high temperature fire that occurred in the police cruiser.there is only the single known event, but due to the catastropic force of such an explosion and the potential for injury and loss of life, this investigation is being upgraded.
EA03001 | FORD MOTOR COMPANY | 01/27/2003 | 11/19/2003 | CNG TANK EXPLOSION | 03V472000
In september 2002, a fuel cylinder in a natural gas powered vehicle (ngv) exploded during a fire.ford and vrtc test engineers jointly examined the incident vehicle and reviewed testing to determine whether the performance of the pressure relief valve (prd) was proper.the purpose of a prd is to protect a compressed natural gas tank from overpressure by allowing the cng to vent when the temperature reaches a specific point.the prd was removed from the failed tank and subjected to a yield temperature determination test. it was concluded that a direct flame (from the interior of the vehicle) onto the cylinder (located behind the rear seat in the trunk)compromised the hoop strength of the natural gas cylinder, thus allowing the cylinder to fail prior to the prd releasing at itsdesigned temperature.as a result of this testing and review of the involved vehicle, ford has developed an insulator to insulate the natural gas fuel tank from a locally directed flame projecting from the interior of the vehicle.insulators will be installed behind the back seat on subject vehicles to prevent future failures of this type. ford's action addresses the concerns of odi.therefore, this investigation is closed. |

Had to post on this blue oval news web site simply because of the amount of educated consumers who utilize blue oval news researching prior to their vehicle purchases. besides the known issue of the dreaded plastic resin intake manifolds cracking on the 4.6l sohc engine on the ford crown victoria there is a more catastrophic quality issue with the crown victoria and that is the torque converter shudder on the crown victoria 4r70w transmission. starting with the '92 model year and it's aode and now the 4r70w which replaced the aode starting in '98 ford has known of quality issues of their transmissions which manifests itself as a horrible shudder or vibration as the transmission shifts from 3rd gear going into 4th gear (usually transitioning from 40 to 50 mph!). i purchased my '99 crown vic and it has provided me reliable transportation until just recently. i picked up this horrible shudder just 6 weeks prior to my 3yr/36k ford warranty running out. when this problem first occurred with having just 22k on the odometer and 6 weeks left on the warranty i quickly brought the car in for waranty work. universal ford in long island city, ny validated that indeed there was a shudder and replaced the transmission with a rebuilt transmission. i drove the repaired vehicle from nyc to leesburg, virginia but on the return trip the shudder came back worse than ever. i managed to limp the car back home and the vehicle has been at universal ford since. for those of you considering a crown victoria perform your due diligence and visit some of the other impartial crown vic web sites (www.corral.net but more importantly www.crownvic.net) searching on tranny shudder. ford has known of this problem over 5 years but hasn't publically made it widely known along with their plastic resin intake manifold debacle. i've owned over a dozen crown victorias in my life and starting with the '92 model year when they transitioned over from the old pushrod-8 5.0l engine to their new 4.6l sohc t

The inner fender protection is completely inadequate, allowing road salt to completely cover the entire engine and wiring. the suspension, master cyclinder, fuel injection, and other parts are coated completely. this could cause deteriorationg and failure of the engine possibly leading to an accident. this has been reported to ford, acknowledging that this is happening, but refusing to fix the situation. they stated if something happens my compliant is on file for future reference. in the 5,000 miles i've put on the car i have washed the engine compartment down 4 times to prevent corrosion or failure. your help in this matter would be appreciated and could prevent an accident due to a mechanical failure in the future.

I am concerned about fuel tank fires started by rear end collisions. all research i have done states that ford is recalling police cars only. as a consumer i think ford owes it to the public to recall all ford crown victoria's. my family is more important then their bottom line. my wife and i do not feel safe driving our children around in this car. ford needs to acknowledge they are putting out an unsafe product. *la
