Had to post on this blue oval news web site simply because of the amount of educated consumers who utilize blue oval news researching prior to their vehicle purchases. besides the known issue of the dreaded plastic resin intake manifolds cracking on the 4.6l sohc engine on the ford crown victoria there is a more catastrophic quality issue with the crown victoria and that is the torque converter shudder on the crown victoria 4r70w transmission. starting with the '92 model year and it's aode and now the 4r70w which replaced the aode starting in '98 ford has known of quality issues of their transmissions which manifests itself as a horrible shudder or vibration as the transmission shifts from 3rd gear going into 4th gear (usually transitioning from 40 to 50 mph!). i purchased my '99 crown vic and it has provided me reliable transportation until just recently. i picked up this horrible shudder just 6 weeks prior to my 3yr/36k ford warranty running out. when this problem first occurred with having just 22k on the odometer and 6 weeks left on the warranty i quickly brought the car in for waranty work. universal ford in long island city, ny validated that indeed there was a shudder and replaced the transmission with a rebuilt transmission. i drove the repaired vehicle from nyc to leesburg, virginia but on the return trip the shudder came back worse than ever. i managed to limp the car back home and the vehicle has been at universal ford since. for those of you considering a crown victoria perform your due diligence and visit some of the other impartial crown vic web sites (www.corral.net but more importantly www.crownvic.net) searching on tranny shudder. ford has known of this problem over 5 years but hasn't publically made it widely known along with their plastic resin intake manifold debacle. i've owned over a dozen crown victorias in my life and starting with the '92 model year when they transitioned over from the old pushrod-8 5.0l engine to their new 4.6l sohc t

POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - TORQUE CONVERTER

Reference odi id 752976 - i had a similar experience and failure of the same equipment and parts described in the refereneced complaint. these are latent design/material/manufacturing defects. i was originally told, under warranty, that the shudder was due to the traction control sensors. this apparently was incorrect. now that the vehicle is just over 100,000 mi, ford will do nothing to correct this defect. the dealer to their credit is trying to correct the shudder problem by servicing the transmission with additives. the intake manifold cracking is a design/material defect which was finally discovered after the warranty period although i had complained about coolant odor several times while in warranty. ford split the difference with me on the cost of repair, they should have sholdered the entire cost. now we have another problem which ford, according to the service supervisor is unwilling to correct. there is a serious problem with the brake booster, it has a tendency to crack internally and cause a hard pedal. this defect was discovered on my wife's mercury sable at about 38,000-mi and now is be exhibited on my crown victoria. catastrophic failure of this component at high speed could cause an accident, loss of control in a panic stop because the driver would have to exert an unusual amount of of pressure on the pedal to apply the brakes and activate the abs. i was told that ford as a general policy will not do anything to correct problems on vehicles over 100,000 mi. the manufacturer should not have indemnity relief on safety issues and latent defects.*ak
POWER TRAIN - AXLE ASSEMBLY
01/14/1999112/01/1998
Vehicle is a police package crown victoria used for paramedic service. we began to notice the vehicle sway subtly with braking, acceleration, and road imperfections in jan 1999. in march, the rear axle began to make a loud banging noise upon moderate acceleration from a stop. it was taken to chapman lincoln-mercury, baltimore pike, springfield, pa 19064 (610-544-0100), where the diagnosis of a loose/missing passenger side rear trailing arm was made. apparently, a bolt had worked loose, and that side of the axle was basically held in place by the shock absorber and leaf spring. obviously, this would adversely affect the high speed handling of the vehicle, or even cause the axle to break completely free, with potentially fatal implications. i would appreciate being informed of the outcome of this, preferably via e-mail. thanks.
