| The fars data shows that the risk of fire from impact in all directions in the subject vehicles is the same as all other sedans.the subject vehicles are not over represented with respect to the risk of fire in real-world high-energy crashes.a further discussion of issues related to post crash fires in the subject vehicles is set out in the closing report for sq 01-014 and that report is in the docket for this petition.after reviewing the petition and its supporting materials, as well as information furnished by ford and gm, and information within the agency's possession from previous investigations and other related actions,nhtsa has concluded that futher investigation concerning post-crash fires in the subject vehicles is not likely to lead to a decision that the vehicles contain a safety defect. | ||||||

| 9:00 a.m., on putting the car into reverse to back out of a space, the motor leaped into full acceleration with a loud roar. the car jumped backward about half a car length, while i jammed the brake pedal down as far as it would go, but the motor overcame the brakes.. i wrestled the gearshift our of reverse but overshot into forward. the car jumped forward with a loud screeching of the tires and a cloud of blue smoke from the tires enveloping the car, before i was able to wrrestle the gearsshift out of forward into neutral. the motor instantly calmed down to idling speed and i was able to drive as usuall.*ak | |||

| While starting the engine at a service station following filling with gas, my 2000 ford crown victoria made a sudden surge forward when i placed the car in gear and turned the wheel to the right. i had my foot on the break and pressed the break pedal hard to stop the car. if i had not had my foot firmly on the break pedal and reacted quickly, or if someone had been in front of the car, an accident could have occured. i heard of a very similar incident involving a fatality of a policeman driving a cv in columbus, ga when is unexpectedly surged forward while he was driving through a fast food drive through. *ak | |||
