This investigation was opened on certain ford pickup trucks and vans to evaluate the effects of a valve stem ejection (with rapid air loss) and a slow leaking valve stem on vehicle handing.during the investigation, odi evaluated over 1,100 complaints and warranty claims, conducted vehicle dynamic testing on a subject vehicle with the failure mode replicated, interviewed owners, and examined complaint vehicles in the field.the results of the test program indicates the effect of a valve stem ejection on these vehicles is easily controlled. further, with a population of almost 900,000 vehicles, having two to four years of exposure, odi is aware of only 3 minor crashes and is unaware of any injuries.the small number of crashes relative to the large population of vehicles is consistent with the testing which was performed. therefore, this investigation is closed.see the attached report for full technical details.

I was traveling down highway 528 on 7/1/04 at around 9 a.m., my speed was approximately 75 mph, the front drivers side thread separated from the tire causing the truck to lift up on one side about two feet. i was in heavy traffic and it almost caused an accident.the impact dented the side of my fender and damaged the trim panel on my truck. the tire was still full of air and i managed to limp on the shoulder of the road to a ford dealership where they put my spar tire on for free. it is noted in the repair invoice the mileage 57663 and the damage that was done. the tires still have good thread and seemed to be in very good shape. the thing that scared me the most was that there was no warning. the following week i took the truck to sears and had a complete set of new tires cooper brand installed. the tires that were on the truck a 2000, f-350 were steeltex a/t, lt265/75r16 123/1200 m/s load range e. i have some other #'s that could help you in seeing if this is an on going problem, 28216 ex, bm14474-3, e4 00 8061. i am the orignal owner and take very good of this truck, i also have some pictures that i would like to show you. *ak

Consumer states that his camper van conversion has not had a smooth ride due to tires. the tire make an oscillating noise which makes the consumer think the tread is about to separate. the vehicle was taken to a for dealer but they were unable to be balanced. in the opinion of the technician the tires were too far out of tolerance. one of the tires could not be balanced therefore goodyear replaced it. the consumer read several article about an agreement between nhtsa and goodyear to replace 200000 tires on 15 passenger vans equipped with light truck load range e tires for model years 1996 to 2000. the consumer believes the camper conversion should be included in the replacement. *nm

Driving south on i-25 from albequerque to el paso. tire blew out & i made a controlled stop. looking under the rear inside dual wheel i saw the tire was shredded. i exited almost at once to a small town named belen, n.m. this occurred almost noon on a saturday. i considered myself lucky to find a tire store open in such a small town. i'm almost 75 with a heart condition. no way i was going to attempt to change that tire on a hot interstate alone. craig tire co. explained the recall policy. they replaced the blown tire (in 2 pieces) and placed it in my rv motor home. i paid them $165.08 and have the receipt. i was lucky to have found a tire dealer on saturday in the middle of the new mexico desert. i have called ford, firestone, the rv dealer, the rv manufacturer, the local tv station, even the newspaper. i understand there have been many complaints. thank god no one was injured or killed. thence, news of no importance! wrong! i'm retired. unexpectingly i purchased this vehicle to travel at my leisure. the price of almost $69,000.00 is not primarily important. someone selling me something that could have ended my wife's and my lives is my major concern. how many other unexpecting buyers may not be as fortunate? i used to drive a semi; i owned 12 trucks. good thing i had experience with blowouts. perhaps the next person won't know how to handle the blowout. luckily, this was not a front tire, but an inside dual rear tire. i don't want the firestone i have. no one is interested in my problem nor reimbursement. additiionally, on closer examination i found another tire, same size, on the right rear outside dual has a 2 crack in the sidewall, which i deem unsafe to drive on. i also own a 1998 ford ranger equipped with firestone wilderness ht tires, p225/70r15 m/s 1005. this vehicle has only 5,281 miles, purchased new. i'm told wildreness ht's are not included in the recall. i would appreciate your clarification.  As i was driving the 2000 ford e350 uhaul the rear right tire disintergrated and blew out while driving at 55 mph on a very hot day in northern california. i temporarily lost control of the truck but managed to pull off the road where i waited a long time for the highway patrol to rescue me. you folks need to seriously investigate uhaul, firestone, and ford for putting my life at risk and selling dangerous crappy tires. thank you. *ak( dot number: tire size: huge )

While driving 50 mph, the rear right outer tire tread separated, but didn't' go flat. the consumer heard a flapping noise from the back of the vehicle and pulled over to inspect the noise. the left rear inner tire tread separated 9 days later while driving on the highway 40 mph. these were load range e tires. both tires were replaced. *ak the second tire caused slight damage to the wheel well and the first tire simply marred the inner wheel well. both tread separations begun on the inside of the rim which was also at the same point on the tire. *sc *jb
