Shortly after purchase brakes failed pedal went to floor on several occasions but were told by dealer there was nothing wrong was common for abs brake pedal to go to floor when sitting at traffic light however they did play with pedal until it came up several trips to dealer never resolved problem yet when the vehicle was at dealer and complained about brakes , transmission, steering, outside right mirror and seat belt in mid right seat dealer found nothing wrong with anything but mirror which they replaced however two hours later another dealer said seat belt was defective and would order one a second dealer shortly thereafter replaced loose linkage in steering, and rebuilt transmission which had burnt overdrive and defective parts in lower range still no-one could find brake prblem until crash when deputy sheriff tested brake pedal 8 times putting pedal to floor ford motor co says the deputy was not qualified to perform such a test and will not accept the fact that there is and has been a problem that is intermittent brake failure apparently associated with the abs as the mechanics stated the first time the vehicle was in with the complaint

Downhill grade applied brakes, vehicle began shaking along with steering wheel. as brakes were pumped shaking became worse to where began to loose control. same thing on return trip. braking works fine on level terrain. situation was very frightning. took vehicle to ford dealer who stated that if the symptoms cannot be replicated in the shop they will not be able to diagnose the problem. they asked if the asb light came on. i responed that i was too busy trying to gain control of the vehicle to notice. they suggested i try to repeat the situation to determine if the asb light comes on and if it does bring the vehicle to the dealer shop.*ak

From a speed of 45 mph these units with rear disc brakes require an additional 14 feet to stop when tested against an older unit that is identical in every way except it has drum brakes on the rear. we also see this same problem on the 2000 models. *ak

Brake pads burned and rotors warped on a 1999 ford econoline. vehicle has 14930 miles on it of which over 12000 miles has been freeway long distance with minimal brake useage. the vehicle which is rated for 8 passengers with luggage, and for heavy duty trailer towing has never been driven with any heavy loads. all long distance driving with 1 or 2 passengers and light luggage only. nonetheless ford customer service and the ford dealer insist this is normal and does not represent a safety hazard and that ford has no responsibility in this regard. i believe that ford has the responsibility to at replace the shoddy parts that they used initially, to forewarn customers that they will very likely require costly brake work at very short intervals, and that even careful drivers can not make it to the first scheduled maintenance without seriously damaging the original equipment brakes. i shudder to think of the danger to occupants of fully loaded econolines used on a daily heavy duty basis. the brakes under those circumstances would seem unlikely to last more than a few thousand miles.
