Ford dealer replaced ptu (power take off unit) on my awd ford edge after 3 other incident of leaking oil. this ptu leaking problem has been documented previously 07-16-10 http://www.fordedgeforum.com/topic/769-2007-ford-edge-technical-service-bulletins-tsb/. other previous oil leaking problems occurred when vehicle had 10,000, 15,000 and 20,000 miles. safety concern is car catching fire when oil leaking. dealer charge me $500.00 even though repairs should have been done during the warranty period. *tr

When we drove our edge at about 40 mph it would make a growling sound, just put on new tires so thought they were the problem, decided that wasn't it, looked in the owners manual saw that it had a power transfer unit that held fluid checked that, it was empty, filled it, the noise didn't go away, it got worse. the vehicle was taken to the dealership where we bought it new. they called said the ptu was worn out needed replaced. said it will cost over $1000. when i found the problem i did an online search and found many reports on ptu failures. in your data base i've found a great number also. who determines what is bad enough for a recall. *tr

The wrench light came and i could not accelerate. i called a dealership and they told me that it was possibly a problem with transmission and that i should turn the car off and turn it on again which i did. i was able to drive it to the dealership. they replaced a sensor it approximately, 1 year after this incidence, the wrench light came on while i was driving around 55-60 mph. i stopped at a light and could not accelerate. other cars were bearing down on me as the light turned green. finally got the car to move and drove it home, but every light i got to it was harder to accelerate. finally reached home, and put it in reverse, it felt like i had been rear ended by a truck. so needless to say, ford only authorized the dealer to replace the same sensor. i will pick up my car today, they replaced the same sensor with a guarantee that it will last for 12 months or 12, 000 miles. i fear for my safety and my family while driving this vehicle. *tr

If i accelerate more than 15 mph the car would what i call slam into the next gear. when i am accelerating onto the highway or accelerate and then back off the gas and go again or if i accelerate into the passing lane the car doesn't drive. i have had the car to bethlehem ford, kelly ford in emmaus and gilboy ford in whitehall for the problem two times at each location. no one can find out what is wrong. contacted ford directly and they say take it to the dealership for repair, i told them i did numerous times and they told me this.the car learns how you drive, so when you drive out of character the car basically reacts by telling you now wait a minute i don't know what you're doing and the car reacts in a confused manner. they also told me that because i'm not an aggressive driver that when i do drive aggressive the car doesn't understand. i drive highway every day to and from work, i have to be aggressive most of the time to survive on the highway and keep up with traffic. i have asked the dealership to come down the block so i can show them what the car does since it does it every day when i leave work but they tell me they can't because it is a liability issue for them to drive in the car with me. they have had the car and can't make it repeat the situation; i have gone on test rides with a mechanic and can't make it repeat the problem. i was taking one of our employees to go pick up one of the company vehicles at gilboy and i said do you want me to show you what my car does and he said yes. so i made the car do the slamming into gear and he said that isn't right he tried to fight for me at gilboy but they said again no code and they couldn't repeat the situation. now my car is almost out of warranty and still no fix. i don't have money to make major repairs to a car that is why i bought new and i don't have money to buy a new car. *tr

When i accelerate from a stop my transmissions violent shifts between 1st to 2nd and sometimes from 2nd to 3rd. it does not do this all the time only 2 or 3 times per week for as long as i am driving it. i have taken my vehicle to lumberton ford concerning this and they stated it did not throw any codes. tech could not replicate the problem (duh) so hey advised me to bring it back when it was actively doing it. most of the times its after hours or while i am in route in the opposite direction or going somewhere. most people just don't cruise around during the week. i took my truck into today when i found ford tsb 7 5 2 and provided it to the dealership but they swear that is not the problem. first when i spoke to the guy couple days ago he couldn't even pull it up on his system then he said the tech adamantly denied this was the problem. this is what tsb 7 5 2 states - dtc p0771, p0774 and / or starts in 4th gear from a stop, harsh 4-1 downshift on drive away at 3 mph. 6f50 transaxle built prior to 01-10-07. *kb it sounds just like it to me. he is expecting it throw a code but it clearly states that and/or. i am fairley mechanically inclined and i know that i have read numerous complaints regarding this and i don't understand what the deal is with ford or the nhtsb in not demanding a recall. my power train was assembled in 11/06 and i feel ford is trying to dodge a bullet. shame on you. *tr

I took my ford edge in for the first time in january 2012 with these issues: while driving the vehicle it would shift extremely hard, it felt as if my car had been rear ended, numerous times the wrench light would come on and the vehicle would become sluggish, when i pressed on the gas the vehicle would not move forward. there was also a high pitched whine when the car was in reverse. i took the vehicle to my local ford dealership, they said they could not find the problem, after researching myself on the internet i told them about the many other complaints i read on the edge transmission and to check the turbine shaft speed sensor. they then replaced it at no charge because i was still under factory warranty. for 8 months i went without incident until september 2012, same problem only worse, i managed to inch my way off the highway. when in drive and pressing on the gas the car would hardly move, when shifting into park/drive the transmission would make a horrendous clunking sound. so here i am back at the dealership no longer under factory warranty and having the exact same problem they supposedly fixed. i am fortunate i was not rear ended when my car came to a halt in traffic and i am grateful i was able to get to safety. i am furious to read page after page of complaints on the very topic and yet ford looks at me like they have never heard of the transmission problems plaguing their customers! why this is not a ford recall i do not know, but i feel thoroughly duped by ford motors. *tr

My 2007 ford edge, began having problems with the transmission november 2011. while driving, pulling onto very busy highway, edge slipped into neutral. numerous vehicles had to suddenly stop to prevent from crashing into me. needless to say i was extremely upset, but also very thankful no one was injured. now the problem begins. notified chapman ford about this problem was told to bring in edge. explained to service edge slipped into neutral, engine light came on along with wrench light. after pulling off to side of road still could not get car to move. i then turned car off for a minute or so, started up the car and it was fine. after a few days i received a call telling me it was the throttle body and would cost 674.00 dollars since this was not covered under warranty. so, throttle body was replaced. now my edge began having the exact same problem 1 month ago, was told now it was the transmission! problem is warranty expired 1 month ago. tired to explain had the problem been corrected the first time, transmission would have still been under warranty. spoke with numerous people including ford, to be told the same thing we can't help sorry your warranty expired. i am now driving my edge with fear this can happen at any time. it gives no warning what so ever, by the way my edge only has 28,000 miles and is very well maintained. i have seen many complaints about this problem, and ford does not seen to want to address the problem. hopefully, no one will get seriously hurt and ford will stand by there edge! thank you for your time, i hope this is helpful for others and this safety problem can be resolved. *tr

I have a 2007 ford edge. i have had brake problems ever since i bought it. by brake problems, i mean they sometimes grind and sometimes feel like i can't stop as well as i should be able to. i had them checked several times and was told they were fine. i finally had them replaced but they still grind at times. i've learned to deal with this problem. i've also experienced a loud roaring noise. i'm not sure what this is but i've also learned to deal with it as well. everytime someone rides with me they ask what the noise is and tell me it sounds like my car has not shifted into the right gear. the major problem i have dealt with is the jerking transmission. it started this about a year after buying it. it started doing it a few times here and there until it got to where it did it all the time. i had mentioned it when i took my car to get the oil changed but they always told me they didn't find anything wrong. i finally told them they had to do something. they kept it for a few days and finally called and said the valve body needed to be replaced. luckily it was still under warranty. they replaced it and it was fine up until several months ago. it started the jerking all over again. it started out slow but now does it all the time. i can't afford to have it fixed again as it's not under warranty any longer. it's still only 4 years old and should not be having all of these problems. i am really surprised there have been no recalls as i've read of other people having the same problems. i am very upset as i still owe on this vehicle but really wish i could get rid of it. i have never had so many problems with a vehicle....even a car i bought that was four years old.....it was a toyota....guess i should have never went to a ford!

The speedometer went to zero and all the mileage information went blank. the front airbag light, service wrench and shortly there after the tire pressure monitor light came on. i exited the freeway and after stopping for the traffic light the vehicle would not accelerate, but moved slowly apparently stuck in the high gears. the vehicle would not shift up or down. the next stop light the same problem. i parked in a parking lot and recycled the ignition and the mileage information returned. however when i put the vehicle into reverse the transmission began to clunk violently! i then switched to drive and again it clunked violently! i recycled the ignition again and put it into reverse again clunking violently. i again recycled the ignition and put into reverse the vehicle trans clunked moving backwards. i then pulled forward shifting to drive again with a clunk the vehicle moved forward as if still in higher gears. i drove across the parking lot to about 30 mph and braked to a stop it down shifted hard. after that the trans worked to get us home, however the cruise control would not light up on the dash or would not function period. i have taken it to hemborg ford in norco, ca to check with 59,175 miles on the vehicle. just two weeks earlier the right rear axle bearing was wining and ford replaced the bearing

Burning smell originating from failed seal (now on national backorder this past year) in ptu assembly on most ford edge and mercury mkx models. i've had my vehicle in the shop 3 times over the past year and they do not have replacement ptu assemblies in stock as the company who made them are now out of business. transmission fluid leaks from ptu assembly onto exhaust, into vents and into our lungs. vehicle is still in the service area at midway ford in roseville, mn. they say i can drive it until they find a part, however it is winter and that is not an option as the windows must remain open. more info at -> http://www.fordedgeforum.com/index.php?showtopic=1654&st=140. *tr

My 2007 ford edge all wheel drive has a leaking problem from the transfer case. it has had this problem since the day it was new. several visits to the dealer i was told it is not leaking although there was always oil on my drive. i own an auto repair shop so i had it in the shop and knew without a doubt it was leaking. what makes it dangerous is the leak drips directly on the exhaust pipe which is right below the transfer case. you can smell burning oil and it smokes a lot of times when stopping at stop signs. the dealer has went as far as replacing the transfer case. that fixed the problem for a few months but the leak always comes back. i have researched the problem and on fordedgeforum.com have found many owners having the same problem. i am afraid ford is not able to find a permanent fix for the problem and someone is going to get burned. i have read of these vehicles catching on fire but have not heard the cause. this leak could be causing it. in my own repair shop i have noticed customer vehicles have the same leak as mine. something needs to be done about it. this affects the 2007 and 2008 ford edge and lincoln mkx models that are all wheel drive and have a transfer case or ptu unit. *tr

2007 ford edge. consumer states ptu unit broke at 85, 0000 miles *tgw the consumer stated there was a grinding noise emitting from the vehicle and it barely made it into the garage. the consumer was informed that ford didn't have a supplier to make the part. on april 25, 2012, the consumer received a call stating the part would be manufactured in late may. *jb

2007 ford edge will roll backward when on the slightest incline while vehicle is in drive. the vehicle will not stop rolling until the brake is depressed or it settles on flat ground. it also does this in reverse and you are pointed downhill. i recently was parked in a downhill position, released the park brake, placed the vehicle in reverse and had to slam on the brakes to stop the edge from slamming into a car in front of me. the edge started to quickly go downhill and i had to accelerate quickly to go in reverse and miss the other vehicle. this problems seems to getting worse as the mileage builds. i currently have 72,000 miles on the edge. i took this vehicle to greenwood ford in bowling green, ky and was told that this was normal and that there was nothing they could do. their service manager took me for a drive in a 2010 edge and it did the same thing. i called ford customer relations and was told that they had never heard this complaint before. this is a severe safety issue and needs to be corrected.

I purchased a 2007 ford edge one month ago. the car has been in the shop 3 out of 4 weekends.the car was in drive and was stopped at a stop sign after trying to take off the car wouldnt move. i brought the car to the ford dealership in maitland and was told that nothing was wrong with the car. the same thing happened 1 week later and i am now being told that it is an engine sensor that is the problem. looks like ford in maitland likes to make things up.

My 2007 ford edge transmission failed and needed to be completely replaced at under 63,000 miles. the transmission that north county ford in vista california installed to replace the original transmission, also failed the same day they delivered the vehicle to my home. now i am in the process of having a 3rd transmission installed at a different ford dealer in san diego. thus far, i have received excellent customer service at mossy ford.

I have a 2007 ford edge that will some times bang, (very hard!) when shifting from first to second gear all on its own. i have herd of others with the same problems. all were told, we couldn't find a problem. is ford trying to dodge a bullet? nothing was done. *tr

I have a 2007 ford edge awd. around 15,000 miles, it began to have a burned rubber smell waft into the passenger compartment whenever i came to a stop after driving for awhile. sometimes i could see smoke sift up through the hood near the windshield. the dealer found the ptu valve (power transfer unit) to be leaking, and i think they changed it. it worked for awhile, but within 4 months, it began to smell again. it was not too bad because it was spring and summer and the problem is only really bad during the winter when the heater is on. it's now october 2009, and i'm using the heater again. the smell was bad, so i took it to the dealer again. they said grease was packed into the valve, and the grease had overflowed. they did not replace the ptu valve. they only steam cleaned my car. it still smells, although not as bad. i have 35,000 miles on the car and i've owned it for 1.5 years brand new. the internet has revealed that many fordedge owners are experiencing the same thing, but ford can't seem to fix it. it is only on awd models because the fluid that is leaking involves the transfer of power to the back tires. there is a website dedicated solely to this problem: stinkinedge.com please help us convince ford this is a defect involving a noxious smell and potentially dangerous chemical exposure. it is also annoying and uncomfortable. there seems to be no fix. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 ford edge. the contact stated that when driving up an incline the transmission began making a ticking sound. transmission failure while driving increased the risk of a crash. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and a technician concluded that the ptu seal was leaking, which can cause transmission failure. the current mileage was 49,533 and the failure mileage was 48,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 ford edge. the contact stated that there was a leak in the vehicle and all of the transmission fluid leaked out. he took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the oil seal on the transmission. a few days later, he smelled transmission fluid burning. the contact took the vehicle back to the dealer and they replaced the seal once again; however, the burning odor is still present. he believes that this is a health hazard and that a recall should be issued. the failure mileage was 34,000 and current mileage was 47,000.

When i am on an incline and i take my foot off of the gas my car will roll backwards. i took it to the dealership to be fixed because i heard there was a tsa for it. they said it was normal to roll backwards and that i needed to keep my foot on the brake. i have almost hit another vehicle because of it rolling backwards. this should not be doing this in an automatic. *tr

My 2007 ford edge is now in the process of having a transmission leak repaired due to faulty axle seals (so i'm told) for the fourth time in 18 months. i was informed by a service manager that my edge is not the first he has seen to have this problem. also ford has stopped shipping replacement seals because they are no better than the originals. ford's stance seems to be that there is no major problem, the vehicle was just repaired in january of this year for the same problem. the problem first appeared in december of 07, i took delivery in august of 07. the vehicle was also repaired in 08 for this problem. *tr

Power transfer unit leaking onto exhaust causing a burning rubber smell into the cabin when stopped. occurs after driving vehicle for 10-15min. took vehicle to dealership seals replaced approximately 2 weeks ago(12-8-08). smell resolved. yesterday smell returned (12-22-08). believe smell is from leaking seals again. leaking onto exhaust giving off burning rubber smell/fumes into the cabin area. somewhat of a noxious smell, very putrid. *tr

Automatic transmission will not hold vehicle in place on even slight incline. i.e. vehicle in drive facing uphill when stopped and brake released vehicle will roll backward down hill. vehicle facing downhill with transmission in reverse will roll forward when brake is released. *tr

When the edge is in drive and stopped on an incline it will roll backward when you release the brake. it doesn't just roll back a little....it will continue to roll back until you give it some gas or step on the brake. the first time it happened i almost rolled back into the car behind me. i have never experienced this rollback in an automatic vehicle. i read on the internet that there was a tsb for this and took my edge in to have it reflashed (as recommended on a ford edge forum) but was told by the dealer that there was no fix (and no such tsb) for it and that this is normal. i feel it is a danger and should be corrected or at the very least mentioned in the owners manual. *tr

Power train: transmission. i have a ford edge built on 01/04/07. purchased on april 01,2007 about 30 days after that about once a week after sitting all night upon leaving the house the transmission starts out smoothly but as i step on the gas the transmission has a sudden surge and makes a loud 'bang and down shifts causing a sudden down turn in speed. then it just goes away and is fine for several days . lately this occurring more and more(about every four days at the moment. unusual thing is it only occurs in the morning start up. when i took into the dealer they found a notice put out by ford stating that cars built in between december 15,2006 and january 10,2007 have a problem of shifting from fouth to first in start up. but ford states that without the computer noting this one specific code they will not replace the transmission. i am in great fear that if this starts more often in the regular daytime driving i will never know if i can moderately pick up speed anytime or will the car downshift in common traffic and the possibilities of being struck from behind or broadsided. this is a very serious defect that needs immediate attention. when this occurs the noise alone is frightening. even though you have it in your mind it could happen it always scares you. *tr

I own a 2007 ford edge, purchased in may 2007. the transmission seems to shudder when upshifting or downshifting at speeds between 35-55 mph. it is apparent when taking your foot off the gas to slow and then applying gas to speed back up. i have taken the vehicle back to the dealership to be checked and was told it was probably flat spots on the tires and the problen would go away after 3000 or so miles to give the tires an opportunity to round out. the vehicle was taken in a second time and taken to another dealership for their transmission mechanic to look at. they had the vehicle for over 10 hours and couldn't seem to find anything wrong or get the vehicle to duplicate the problem we brought it in for. the vehicle now has 5600 miles on it and the problem seems to be getting worse. i am going to take it back to the dealer to have it checked again. this time, i'm going to demand to take a drive in another edge to see if it has the same shifting problems i am currently having.

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 ford edge. when the vehicle was purchased, the front passenger seat failed. the vehicle was at the dealer for three weeks to repair the seat. the bolts in the seat were visible and injured one of the passengers. the dealer replaced the screws and covered them with a rubber seal; however, they continue to fall off and expose the screws. at 150 miles, the lining in the moonroof fell off of the vehicle and was replaced by the dealer. six months later, while driving approximately 5 mph, the contact heard a loud grinding sound when he depressed the brake pedal. the dealer diagnosed the failure and stated that the brakes were corroded. the brakes were replaced and the rotors were cleaned. the front and rear windows do not grip or seal properly when they are rolled up or down. the dealer diagnosed the window failure on four occasions and eventually stated that they had to change the paper on the rollers. the two rear exterior lights continue to fill up with water. the dealer diagnosed the failure on three occasions and replaced the tail lights; however, the failure continued. there seems to be a design failure. on several occasions, the gear shift failed to engage in park, drive, and reverse. a passenger had to stop traffic since the gear shift was locked in reverse. the failure recurred on february 20, 2008; however, the dealer stated that the earliest they could schedule an appointment would be on march 1, 2008. the failure occurs intermittently and has been in the repair shop every other week since it was purchased. the contact is the original owner. the dealer has offered no assistance in replacing the vehicle. the contact was advised to only have the vehicle serviced by a dealer that is one or more hours away from her residence. the failure mileage was 150 and current mileage was 8,000. updated 3/25/08 *cn
