The brake master cylinder cap leaks brake fluid and the fluid runs down the wiring and down the firewall of the engine compartment. the brake fluid has corroded the paint off of the firewall, and then the fluid gets hot and smokes. because the fluid runs down the wiring, the vehicle is also having electrical problems. ford has a recall 11s24 for vehicles of the same year with the same problem, but they say that our vehicle is not included even though the master cylinder cap clearly leaks. they won't look at the vehicle unless we pay $85 to have it diagnosed. we would like to have this vehicle added to the recall.

The trunk-door (5th door) cannot be opened when exposed to the sun or temperature is warmer. it can only be opened after it is cooler in the evening or at night. the rear-left- passenger-door locked and cannot be opened at all. now passengers have to enter and exit the vehicle using only one right-passenger-door. this is a safety issue and a very inconvenient one. please help!!!!!

We bought our 2001 ford escape new. on the 8th of december, 2011 it was parked in our double car attached garage. my son came home around 11:30 p.m. going through the garage and did not see or smell anything. my husband and i, his youngest son were asleep already from the fumes. we had to be pulled out of our beds by my older step-son. he saw smoke coming through the door going to the garage. we he opened the door he saw smoke and flames shooting out of the front of the escape. he tried to open the garage door but by then it was too late. i had to get my dog out from under the bed and escape through my bedroom window. as a result the whole home was burned and the insurance company considers it a total loss. what i want to know is what recourse i have. i would like to find similar incidents from other ford escape owners. i forgot to say that we received our recall on january 31st of 2012. about a month too late to tell us not to park it in or near a dwelling. this has been the most horrific thing i have ever gone through and believe me, i have gone through a whole lot in my life. i want to file a class action lawsuit as that seems to me that is the only recourse i have. i would like to know how i would go about doing this.

I went to start the car and noticed smoke coming out from under the hood and a bad smell. i opened the hood and noticed the area under the master cylinder was on fire. luckily i had a small co2 fire estinguisher and put it out. the entire wiring harness is burned right off where it plugs into the ans module. after searching the internet it seems there is a problem with this make and model. i always wondered why i had to put brake fluid in twice per year. i hope the dealer doesn't try to rip me off and say it's not covered for some reason. they do not like to fix factory recalls.

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford escape. after parking the vehicle a few days and attempting to start, it would not respond. a tow truck driver was able to restart the vehicle. the vehicle was then taken to a certified mechanic who repaired the computer system. however, the failure reoccurred so the vehicle was taken to another mechanic who repaired the computer system again. the failure occurred a third time so the contact called the manufacturer who stated that there was nothing they could do to assist; the manufacturer advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealership for diagnosis. the vehicle had not been inspected at the dealership or repaired at the time of the complaint. the current and failure mileages were approximately 104,000.

I have a 2001 ford escape. while staying at a hotel on vacation in marfa, tx, i was awakened by my car alarm going of at approximately 5:30 am on may 12, 2010. when i went outside to turn it off, i found smoke pouring out from under the hood. our neighbor called 911, and the car continued to smoke until the fire department arrived. as the fire dept. was inspecting the car, flames did appear from the abs wiring harness and module. the fire was extinguished quickly and damage was confined to the abs harness and module. i had received a recall notice for the abs harness a couple of years ago, and took my car to a dealership in austin to have the necessary work performed. that work was performed on august 6, 2008. when i contacted ford to let them know that my car had caught fire even though the recall was performed, they informed me that their records showed that the abs harness on my car was inspected and it was determined that it did not need to be replaced. as of may 16, 2010, my car is still at a ford dealership in fort stockton, tx and i am at home in austin waiting to hear from ford's office of general council.

While traveling uphill going approx 45 mph the engine on my 2001 ford escape shut down. complete power to my car was lost. the odometer even lost the miles driven and was replaced by dashes momentarily. when the engine shut down i steered the car to the side of the road, i lost power steering and brakes. the check engine light also came on when this happened. there was no previous indication that there was an issue with the engine. after i pulled to the side of the road. i put car in park and turned key off. i waited approx 5 minutes and restarted the car with no problems. the check engine light was off and car started smoothly as usual. after researching this online, i don't seem to be the only person having this issue. *tr

Mar 27 had 2001 ford escape in dealership for oil leak and engine hesitation. leak not fixed on 1st time taken to dealer. #3 coil, intake gaskets replaced & tuneup done for hesitation. mar 31 vehicle taken back for same problems, #4 coil was replaced and was told no oil leak, also told engine not supposed to be washed and water blew out #4 coil. on the way home, still smelled burning oil & engine hesitation still felt. called dealership, was told to let the car sit for a day. car sat for 2 days. car still drove the same, oil leak & hesitation still there. took vehicle straight back to the dealership, on the way there vehicle had no power and would not go faster than 15mph. then the egr valve blew. and i live 2 miles from the dealership. dealership had the vehicle from apr 1 to apr 15. now i was told the catalytic converters on the manifolds are plugged up and this is causing the hesitation and the oil leak was from the timing chain cover. dealership had to remove the engine to replace the gasket. was told they don't know how they missed this leak the other 2 times i took the vehicle in for this leak. only thing the warranty covered is the oil leak. federal mandated emission law is 8yrs or 80,000 miles. vehicle is in the 8 years and @ 75,500 miles. ford refuses to do anything about the converters. took escape to local mechanic apr 17. exhaust inspection showed only the rear catalytic converter plugged (replaced now). #4 & #6 coils not firing. coils work connected in other sparkplug locations. wiring for coils not working. these coil locations worked prior to going back to dealership. mechanic said i should sue the dealership for misdiagnosis and breaking additional items when engine was removed. mechanic also ran diagnostic, no codes coming up, dealership reset pcm to old programming, so vehicle now hesitates & dies. wife still wants to keep vehicle. told her no. already shopping for anything other than ford. *tr

Tl*- the contact stated that the 2001 ford escape xlt wires under the hood burned while sitting in the garage of her home. she drove the vehicle one hour prior to the fire. the alarms in her house warned her of the fire. she called the local fire department, and they found no fire in the house. they then checked the garage and they smelled something burning. the fireman opened and noticed the wires that were burning under the hood of the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to town and country, and they informed her that old brake fluid leaked on the abs, which was the cause of the wires burning. the vehicle was serviced for the abs light coming on, and off at the local firestone, they replaced the master cylinder . the wires burned within 24 hours of the repair. the town and country dealership gave the contact a loaner vehicle, and she felt this was odd. the contact stated that the dealership informed her that it would cost $2,416.12 to repair the wires and the abs. the current and failure mileage were both 67,508. *ak the consumer states that she wants to be reimbursed for all repairs done to her vehicle and has provided all invoices for repair and the report from the fire dept. update 4/25/07*tr

The suv sat parked for a 3 day period. heavy rain storms moved through area for 1 and 1/2 days of that time however the vehicle was not driven. after the 3rd day, the suv was started at which time the check engine light started to blink and when accelerator was depressed for power, the engine sputtered. problem was diagnosed as a 'bad coil pack. it was replaced and given back. after 3 days of driving, the same failure happened again, this time they replaced the coil pack and the wiring harness. just over 6 months later, the same situation occured with the vehicle. it sat for 4 days in which time a severe rain storm came through however vehicle was not driven nor standing in water. started the vehicle on the 4th day with the exact same result. vehicle is in ford garage and was notified that the coil pack was damaged due to moisture. these failures are not covered under any warranty and should be happening.

I have a 2001 ford escape and it was recently recalled for faulty ignition switch. the day before i took it in for the recall, the check engine light came on and it was rough idling. the ford dealer replaced ignition coil and said that was problem for check engine light and rough idle and said they did the recall. less than a month later my car would not restart after stopping for a few brief minutes. a tow truck was called by ford's roadside assistance and when the tow truck driver arrived an hour and a half later the car started. the tow truck driver said it may have just been a fluke. i drove the car home without it being towed. 2 weeks went by with nothing happening and then one day after another brief stop the car would not start again. this time the tow truck arrived and it was taken to a ford dealer and was kept by them for 2 days to no avail. they still could not find a problem. they returned the car to me and 2 days later the car would not restart again. my husband pushed on the car backwards a few feet while the car was in neutral and to much surprise, the car started again when put tried again. this was very good news as it was late evening on a sat and the ford dealer was not open. today, 3 days later, my husband stopped for gas and after paying for the gas the car will not restart. the truck is once again being towed to the ford dealer this time for good until it is fixed properly. luckily these all happened close to home, what if we would have been on a trip or something ? if they cannot fix this problem i would like to be given a new/comparable vehicle. i am almost scared to drive it from fear of it failing me again.*ak

Oct 15, 2001- while driving down a steep hill in austin, tx, my escape suddenly died without warning. i was unable to stop, steer, or slow down! i coasted into a parking lot at the bottom of the hill and luckily avoided all parked cars or people (co-workers!) walking through the lot. i had the car towed to maxwell ford and was told that they couldn't find anything wrong with my car! i contacted the president/ ceo to express my concern over what could have happened. he didn't seem to be moved. i picked up my car and hoped it was just a fluke. two and-a-half years later and not a single problem, until last week (april 9, 2004). i was driving about 40mph around a curve and suddenly lost all ability to steer or slow down! once again, i was unbelievably lucky that i didn't hurt anyone or myself. i was able to start it again and safely pull over to the side of the road after coasting to a stop. i'm grateful that i wasn't rear-ended or hit head-on when i coasted over the middle line.... (nevermind the heart-attack i almost had from the suddenness of this!) i hate to imagine the outcome if this would have happened 10 minutes earlier while i was moving at 55mph in busy traffic on the highway or on the exit ramp! i have an appt to take the car in on friday. coincidentally, i discovered (this morning) that a recall has been announced for this very problem.... (2 years after they were made aware that there might be an issue????) what a relief. so, i'll be back on hwy 410 in san antonio next week after i pick my car up from the service dept --- i'll be the one in the ford escape going about 60mph..... i sure hope i'll be able to steer or slow down if i need to!! at least, i'll be better prepared for this surprise from now on ( like everytime i have to drive anywhere)! .... nothing like paying $24,000 for a little extra stress and worry. thanks, ford. you are just super.

On two separate occasions, while driving along at approximately 40 mph, our ford escape suddenly lost all power and stalled. this resulted in loss of power steering and power brakes. the ford escape could not be restarted until it was stopped and placed in park. we have taken to hill & sanders ford located in wheaton, md. in addition to other service related problems with the staff of hill & sanders, we were told different stories by different people. one story was that our key ring was too heavy (4 keys 1 remote). the next was that there was a computer reprogramming that would resolve this problem (along with a developing/occasional transmission shiver/shudder between 35-45 mph). the computer reprogramming was completed 4 days ago. since that time, the car has not stalled in a similar manner, but continues to have an occasional transmission shiver / shudder. based on the failure of the reprogramming to fix the transmission shiver / shudder, we anticipate that the ford escape will continue to stall. *nlm

I purchased this ford escape in march 2001 and have had nothing but problems with it since. on march 26 2001, two days after i received my new vehicle, it wouldn't start. the same problem occurred three more times in a period of two weeks before i brought the vehicle back to the dealer on april 9 2001. the dealership replaced the battery which was obviously defective. since then i have had numerous other problems with my ford escape. i reported that the throttle was sticking (5/17/02) and it was replaced, but it continues to happen. i also reported that there was a vibration and hesitation when shifting gears around 45 mph (5/17/02). nothing was done at that time to remedy the problem. i later (8/29/02) reported the same problem to the dealer, brought the vehicle back for service on 9/27/02 at which time the torque converter was replaced. there is still a hesitation and loss of power as i drive the vehicle. also on 5/11/02, the service engine soon light came on. the fuel emissions valve was replaced on 5/17/02. on 10/28/02, i reported to the dealer that my vehicle almost stalled at an intersection on 10/26/02 and later that day it would not start. i also told the service representative that there continued to be a loss of power as i drive the vehicle at highway speeds. i brought the escape back to the dealer on 10/30/02 and the technician found nothing wrong with the vehicle from the tests he performed. i am not satisfied with these results there is something obviously wrong with this vehicle! dt

Engine stall - adding my incident to the list - driving to work this morning on interstate-35, travelling about 40+ mph. realized brakes were not engaging as i was quickly approaching the car in front of me, then realized oil light and engine light were on and no response to increased gas pedal pressure on rpm gauge to try to move car out of lane. luckily happened to be in far left lane and had just enough room to coast over to shoulder and apply parking brake to stop. removed keys, reinserted and car started right up. this is the first occurrence - however i peruse the nhtsa sight occasionally and remembered reading about this situation from a few years ago. i have not contacted the dealer yet - wanted to review this sight first to see if any action has been taken yet - apparently not. thank god a guardian angel was on my shoulder this morning.*ak

While the escape is driving at no particular speed, the steering wheel tugs a little then it locks completely up, then the brakes fail, the engine light comes on and the only way to get the car to stop is to use the emergency brake. my escape has done this three times since i bought it in may of this year. two of the incidents almost resulted in car accidents because the car can not be steered. the car totally freezes up with all engines lights coming on. the speed doesn't seem to be a factor. all three occassions my cd player has been on, the air has been on low and my lights have been on. after the car finally stops by using the emergengy brake, i shut everything off and it starts right back up again.

The overhead map lights in the front of the vehicle do not come on when the driver door is opened. the center and back dome lights come on and then fade, however, there isn't enough light in the front of the vehicle to see to put the key in without manually turning on the map light. i have 2 friends who have the same year model, and their map lights come up. when i contacted the dealer, he said a change in wiring was made to their vehicles and would gladly charge me $300 to fix mine. i live in alaska where 6 months out of the year it's dark and i believe this is a safety harzard in getting into the vehicle without having adequate lighting to see to put the key in. we've talked to the sevice manager and they are unwilling to do anything for us. they have apologized for wasting my time, and leaving me sit in their waiting area for 8 hours and then announcing they forgot about me. when told it would take an addtional 3 1/2 hours to fix, and cost me $300, there wasn't enough time left in the day to complete the job if i chose to spend the money and would have had to come back at another time. i feel this is a true safety hazard when i can't see to put the key in and start the vehicle up.*ak
