| Defect Summary | Ford motor company is recalling certain model year 2001 through 2004 escape vehicles equipped with 3.0l v6 engines and speed control manufactured from october 22, 1999, through january 23, 2004. inadequate clearance between the engine cover and the speed control cable connector could result in a stuck throttle when the accelerator pedal is fully or almost-fully depressed. this risk exists regardless of whether or not speed control (cruise control) is used. | |||||||||||||||

| Submission from re ford escape 2001 safety recall notice 11s24 *tgw the consumer received a recall notice in jan 2012. the notice indicated she would be informed when the parts required to complete the safety recall would become available, which wouldn't be until the second quarter. the vehicle caught on fire while parked, which was prior to the recall, but was quickly extinguished. shortly after the fire, the vehicle was repaired. several months later, the consumer was partly compensated by ford in the form of a check for $1900 accompanied by a document which stated by accepting the compensation, she would also be signing off on any other claims. the consumer also stated the catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, master cylinder, wiring harness, abs, brake line booster, power steering rack and pinion, tie rods, intake manifold as well as the air bag were all replaced. the steering column would freeze, the rear passenger door handle fell off, rendering the door unstable, the coolant light illuminated, the oil pan needed to be replaced, the air condition stopped working and the rear shock were leaking. *jb | |||

| Vehicle's # - 2001 ford escape .every morning i start the car it hesitates to stay started,(idealing) sometimes the car does shut off and i have to restart the car. i start out and when i go to brake the car hesitates and want to shut off at the same time i lose my brakes (they lock up and will not stop...) the car also sometimes smell hot after driving. once the car has been driven for a while the brakes seem to work fine but there is still a hot smell when we shut the car off. i have had this in for service more then once and they had me do certain services on the car and this still has not fixed the problem, i took back in after spending enough money and doing the service they suggested the mechanics kept it for a few days and thought they fixed the problem,but here we are again(1 yr later) and i'm back to where we started. i have all the paperwork to what was done with the car for this problem.. service was performed as follows a. replace intake gaskets,spark plugs,dpfe sensor. b. fuel filter. c. perform bg professional fuel injection cleaning service. the second time in for service- a. 100 diag mass air flow meter=rec. tune up = filters advise on pendg. codes 0171-0174=poss. intake leek =replace maf sensor=clear codes. this was everything they suggested we do and now as its cold i'm having the same problem as i did last february. | I have had brake liquid leaking from the engine container since i purchased the car around 2001. i notified the dealership and the first time they said the cap malfunctioned and they replaced the cap, the second time they said i overfilled the container but it never stopped and to this day the container leaks. i also have had the car stall on several occasions. i thought this to be just a freak accident until i read these postings and it appears the problem is wide spread. one time it stalled while driving on interstate 81 at a high rate of speed, i thought i was going to wreck but managed to pull over with out an accident. now my car has a hard time starting for no reason. at first i had the battery replaced, but the problem just got worse. now i sometimes spend 20 min trying to start the car, when it finally starts, it stalls and when its finished stalling, it accelerates on its own and stays that way for several min. until now i just thought these were rare occurrences but now i don't think they are. i believe they are all safety problems and not once was i notified of any recall to fix. my coolant light came on over 8 months ago and is still on despite having it checked and no problem was found.*cn | |||

(2007) while driving or parked, after turning the steering wheel left or right, there would be a loud squeak or screehing sound coming from the tire area. dealer notified me that the axle rod needed to be replaced costing over $300. | Mar 27 had 2001 ford escape in dealership for oil leak and engine hesitation. leak not fixed on 1st time taken to dealer. #3 coil, intake gaskets replaced & tuneup done for hesitation. mar 31 vehicle taken back for same problems, #4 coil was replaced and was told no oil leak, also told engine not supposed to be washed and water blew out #4 coil. on the way home, still smelled burning oil & engine hesitation still felt. called dealership, was told to let the car sit for a day. car sat for 2 days. car still drove the same, oil leak & hesitation still there. took vehicle straight back to the dealership, on the way there vehicle had no power and would not go faster than 15mph. then the egr valve blew. and i live 2 miles from the dealership. dealership had the vehicle from apr 1 to apr 15. now i was told the catalytic converters on the manifolds are plugged up and this is causing the hesitation and the oil leak was from the timing chain cover. dealership had to remove the engine to replace the gasket. was told they don't know how they missed this leak the other 2 times i took the vehicle in for this leak. only thing the warranty covered is the oil leak. federal mandated emission law is 8yrs or 80,000 miles. vehicle is in the 8 years and @ 75,500 miles. ford refuses to do anything about the converters. took escape to local mechanic apr 17. exhaust inspection showed only the rear catalytic converter plugged (replaced now). #4 & #6 coils not firing. coils work connected in other sparkplug locations. wiring for coils not working. these coil locations worked prior to going back to dealership. mechanic said i should sue the dealership for misdiagnosis and breaking additional items when engine was removed. mechanic also ran diagnostic, no codes coming up, dealership reset pcm to old programming, so vehicle now hesitates & dies. wife still wants to keep vehicle. told her no. already shopping for anything other than ford. *tr | |||

| I purchased this ford escape in march 2001 and have had nothing but problems with it since. on march 26 2001, two days after i received my new vehicle, it wouldn't start. the same problem occurred three more times in a period of two weeks before i brought the vehicle back to the dealer on april 9 2001. the dealership replaced the battery which was obviously defective. since then i have had numerous other problems with my ford escape. i reported that the throttle was sticking (5/17/02) and it was replaced, but it continues to happen. i also reported that there was a vibration and hesitation when shifting gears around 45 mph (5/17/02). nothing was done at that time to remedy the problem. i later (8/29/02) reported the same problem to the dealer, brought the vehicle back for service on 9/27/02 at which time the torque converter was replaced. there is still a hesitation and loss of power as i drive the vehicle. also on 5/11/02, the service engine soon light came on. the fuel emissions valve was replaced on 5/17/02. on 10/28/02, i reported to the dealer that my vehicle almost stalled at an intersection on 10/26/02 and later that day it would not start. i also told the service representative that there continued to be a loss of power as i drive the vehicle at highway speeds. i brought the escape back to the dealer on 10/30/02 and the technician found nothing wrong with the vehicle from the tests he performed. i am not satisfied with these results there is something obviously wrong with this vehicle! dt | |||

| Since the first weeks of purchase of vehicle it has had numerous sensor problems, all of which the national city ford has addressed. they have changed multiple parts in the vehicle, including a failed system. the original purchase was made from bob baker ford in mission valley, (san diego) but the vehicle it's self has been serviced at the national city dealer. since the beginning of the vehicle problems we have been in contact with the manufacturer, advising them of all the different defects we have. the defect that most worries us is the engine failure, the engine tends to lose all power without notice and shuts off loosing power steering and braking ability. this has happend to us at night, and not even the dash board lights flicker, or the head lights. we have addressed the issue, they have installed equipment to try and figure the problem with no success. they say we can hope it does not happen again. fortunatly it has not happened on the freeway, as those ford focus problems. the latest problem with the vehicle has been transmission related, it is as of 10/29/02 being looked at the fuller ford dealership for this problem. we have also asked that they look at the engine problem, and they will advise. dt | |||

| I continue to have a problem with my vehicle stalling for no apparent reason. it happened twice in october 2001. the first time it happened i called the dealership to see if there was a problem with the escape. i was told there was no problem & there was nothing wrong with my vehicle but call if it happens again. my vehicle stalled the next day. i took the vehicle to the dealership but they were unable to duplicate the stall. they contacted their repair hotline for suggestions. there was apparently no real answer but it was suggested to replace a variety of parts. my vehicle had no problems until 06/25/02 when it stalled again for no reason. this is a serious safety issue. in each instance i was travelling at approximately 45mph on a downhill (with plenty of gas in the tank) and the vehicle stalled w/out any warning. my radio & lights continued to work just fine. needless to say i lost my power steering and brakes on each occasion. the first 2 occasions i was lucky enough to be able to muscle my car onto the shoulder of the road w/out incident. i put it in park & it started right up. the last time i had to shift it into neutral on the fly & restart the engine. luckily for me it restarted as i had nowhere to pull over as i was headed towards a two lane bridge over the river with no shoulder to pull onto. i have been very lucky in that i have not been injured nor have i injure anyone else. this is a very serious defect and a potentially deadly one. i know from doing some research that there are quite a few others with this problem on both the 2001 & 2002 models. this is an issue that needs to be addressed quickly before there is a fatality. a brand new car should not stall at random times with no warning while travelling at a pretty good speed.*ak | |||

| I bought my vehicle new ooon 08/18/01 as a demo w/ 5600 miles. on 10/22/01 my vehicle stalled for no reason on my way to work. i was going slightly downhill (not that steep of a hill) at approx 35mph. i lost power & my check engine, oil & battery lights came on. luckily i could pull over quickly. i turned the vehicle off & waited about 30 sec. it started no problem. i called the dealership that morning & was told there was nothing wrong with it but to call back should it happen again. on 10/24/01 the same thing happened again at the same point in my commute under the same circumstances. once again i was able to start the vehicle with no problems after pulling to the side of the road. i called the dealership again & took it in. of course they couldn't find anything wrong w/ it & the called the ford hotline for any recommendations. i brought it back the following week so they could replace the idle motor & a few other things. the dealership states there is no recall & it sounds like they don't even really know what it is or how to fix it, the hotline just recommended some things to do hoping it would fix it. shortly after that i noticed my vehicle was leaking fluid (11/15/01) about a week after an oil change. i took it back to the oil change place & they said it wasn't oil but i had a pretty big leak of what looked like transmission fluid. i immediately took it to the dealer. it ended up being differential fluid & they replaced the power transfer case. so far my vehicle hasn't stalled or leaked any other fluids. my biggest concern however, is the stalling problem which could potentially be very dangerous. i was lucky in that i wasn't on the highway & it was very early & i had a place to pull over so i didn't get hit. thank you for your attention to this matter. *ak | |||

| The suv was purchased new in mid-december 2000. on 9/7/07, i was slowing down, on a downhill slope, to make a right turn when the suv shut itself off and the steering column locked up. it had 1/3 tank of gas. i shifted the automatic into park, turned the key, the car started and i extricated my 7 year old son and myself from the busy intersection and from the mouth of on-coming traffic (we landed in the left turn lane, much to a jeep's dismay). i drove slowly to my son's school (3 blocks down), then to work where i notified ford via it's 800 number. i made an appointment for that afternoon with the dealership to have the car fixed. i left the car with the dealership. on 9/8/01, i called and the dealership said the car was ready. i asked the service manager to review the repairs with me & my husband and to explain why the repair fixed the problem. he said they replaced a valve which controls air flow. he said this would cause the car to shut off, especially if i had been engaging the brakes when the car shut off. i was engaging the brakes when it shut off, so i accepted this explanation. i packed my 7 year old into the suv and left. within 7-10 miles, the car shut itself off, again (only 26 hours after the first incident and the supposed fix)! this time i was accelerating up a semi-steep incline. my eyes were forward. i noticed out of the bottom of my field of vision a red glow. i looked down and the oil lamp was glowing. i just had the oil changed within 1,000 miles and the car was just at the dealership that morning, so that couldn't be a problem. i then noticed that all of the other dashboard lights (most in white light) also were lit up. at that point, the steering began to locked up and the car slowed to a stop. i managed to maneuver the suv to the community center's driveway on the right. we narrowly missed being mowed down by a van which had gained signficant momentum having just swooped down the downgrade and was racing up the incline. 1/4 tank gas. | |||

| Driving 45-50 mph when engine just shut down. had all loss of power including steering and brakes. coasted to edge of road, placed gear in park and sat for a few minutes and tried to restart. was successful at restarting with no problem. this is the first of two incidents within a period of 5 days. the second happened at 60 mph. to afraid to attempt driving on interstate and am on pins and needles even on rural roads. made appt with dealer the first business day after it happened and they are trying to figure it out also. jim snead ford is replacing the ignition starter switch hoping this solves the problem.*ak | |||

| 2 months after i bought my car brand new i went out to start it, it would not start and the emission light came on. the car sounds like it is trying to start, the only way i could get the car to start is hold the ignition. i smelled gas after the car started. i informed ford about the problem, they found nothing but replaced my starter even though it wasn't the problem. i have had this car almost 3yrs my warranty is ready to expire and ford still cannot fix/find the problem. this car has left me stranded more then once, i even had it towed to the dealership after working hrs. i was told by their service manager the car started, we found nothing wrong. i even told the dealership this car has been in the shop over 3x's it is a lemon and i want a new car or my money back. i was informed according to ford we cannot find a problem therefore, the lemon law does not exist and ford will not just take the car back. i have had this car to 2 ford dealerships, the sad part the orginal place i bought it from treated my very nasty since i would take my car for service at a closer one and have them look into the problem. ford is ford doesn't matter what dealer i use does it? i am very dissatisfied and will never ever buy another ford again!! someone please help me!!! | |||

| I purchased this ford escape in march 2001 and have had nothing but problems with it since. on march 26 2001, two days after i received my new vehicle, it wouldn't start. the same problem occurred three more times in a period of two weeks before i brought the vehicle back to the dealer on april 9 2001. the dealership replaced the battery which was obviously defective. since then i have had numerous other problems with my ford escape. i reported that the throttle was sticking (5/17/02) and it was replaced, but it continues to happen. i also reported that there was a vibration and hesitation when shifting gears around 45 mph (5/17/02). nothing was done at that time to remedy the problem. i later (8/29/02) reported the same problem to the dealer, brought the vehicle back for service on 9/27/02 at which time the torque converter was replaced. there is still a hesitation and loss of power as i drive the vehicle. also on 5/11/02, the service engine soon light came on. the fuel emissions valve was replaced on 5/17/02. on 10/28/02, i reported to the dealer that my vehicle almost stalled at an intersection on 10/26/02 and later that day it would not start. i also told the service representative that there continued to be a loss of power as i drive the vehicle at highway speeds. i brought the escape back to the dealer on 10/30/02 and the technician found nothing wrong with the vehicle from the tests he performed. i am not satisfied with these results there is something obviously wrong with this vehicle! dt | |||

| The first incident happened on 05/01/06 after driving at least 30 min to 45 min. at a speed of around 50 mph, the check engine light came on. i took it to the dealer where they diagnosed a loose gas cap. on 5/22/06 after driving again at least 30 min to 45 min. after returning home and backing out of the driveway my escape stalled and would not start, after about an hour it started again did not take it to the dealer. the third incident happened may 30 after driving 30 min to 45 min the check engine light came on again. i took it to the dealer where they replaced the vapor management valve which is still not correcting the problem, so they are talking about replacing the fuel tank. the dealer has been very helpful, but after five years i would think i would not have this problem. *jb | |||

| When driving or idling, my 2001 ford escape has stalled 7 times in the past three weeks. the auto has only 8600 miles. i first took it to the ford service shop, who replaced the air flow valve and the idle regulator, but this did not solve the problem. the car stalled again two days later. i returned the car to the shop without any help from the dealer because the shop could not duplicate the problem. i explained to the shop manager that i had read on the internet that a pcm relay could be the culprit. the frod delaer shop very hesitantly replaced the part today. i feel this is a very serious problem because i have almost been hit twice when the engine has stalled. i lose power steering and power brakes, thus losing control of the car. *ak | |||

| Submission from re ford escape 2001 safety recall notice 11s24 *tgw the consumer received a recall notice in jan 2012. the notice indicated she would be informed when the parts required to complete the safety recall would become available, which wouldn't be until the second quarter. the vehicle caught on fire while parked, which was prior to the recall, but was quickly extinguished. shortly after the fire, the vehicle was repaired. several months later, the consumer was partly compensated by ford in the form of a check for $1900 accompanied by a document which stated by accepting the compensation, she would also be signing off on any other claims. the consumer also stated the catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, master cylinder, wiring harness, abs, brake line booster, power steering rack and pinion, tie rods, intake manifold as well as the air bag were all replaced. the steering column would freeze, the rear passenger door handle fell off, rendering the door unstable, the coolant light illuminated, the oil pan needed to be replaced, the air condition stopped working and the rear shock were leaking. *jb | |||

| I see more and more people are having problems of replacing the egr valve on their 2001 ford escape. i replaced mine twice and the dpfe sensor twice and just had the computer replaced at just under 42000 miles. there is too many problems with this model year and the warranty is up.. they (ford) make so these cheap parts last until warranty expires, so the consumer has to pay i bought fords all my life but i'm having second thought after this buy. *nm | |||

| There were numerous problems. the egr sensor (dpfe) was replaced along with the sop driver side outer belt molding, fuel pump, sway bar links and iac. *bf there was a loud noise coming from the driver's side window, water leaked around the tailgate window, the vehicle was hard to start, the iac was sticking, the driver's side window squeaked and rattled, the vehicle hesitated upon starting, there was play in the front sway bar links, the coolant light stayed on, there was a crack around the oil pan and the oil drain plug was problematic, and the accelerator pedal was sticking. *sc *jb | |||
