AQ10001FORD MOTOR COMPANY11/18/2010Fleet Vehicle Recall Completion Audit
The agency, particularly in recent months, has been informed of incidents involving allegations of personal injury and death claimed to have been caused by safety defects and failures to conform to minimum federal motor vehicle safety standards (fmvss) on rental car vehicles for which a safety recall to remedy the safety defect or noncompliance had allegedly not been performed prior to the rental car company's lease of the vehicle.nhtsa understands that there is presently a petition before the federal trade commission (ftc) seeking to prohibit at least one rental car company from renting vehicles on which safety recall campaign remedies remain outstanding.the purpose of this audit query (aq) is to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on the above-listed safety recall campaigns.these campaigns were chosen due to their inclusion of vehicles used in the rental market.this information is expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets, in general or individually, perform necessary recall-related repairs or other remedies on the vehicles owned and then leased for use on the roadways.this aq is opened.

Driving 15mph down home street and heard a clunk. put in reverse to get back to driveway and right front wheel was sideways and dragging. after calling local garage was informed it was the subframe that holds the control arm that was rusted through. able to manuver car onto front lawn where it still sits.

1 - rear latch is not working properly. when it is cool outside, the latch will not open the back door. 2 - window latch has rusted causing the rear window to detach from the hinge. not that i am bidder, but at 37k miles, the transmission blew.... i discussed this issue with both ford and my dealership (kennyross). both companies stated they could not help me and that it was on me to pay to correct. i explained that this was due to a lack of using proper supplies. they could not have cared less. i am hoping you can have them look into this because i would really hate to be involved in a car accident cannot use the rear as an exit....

My car had a loud squeak and creak while driving that continually got louder over the past week... i took it to my mechanic and he discovered the sub frame assembly on the front passenger side has completely rotted away. this attaches to the control arm, and ford has no recall. he is a certified mechanic and says this part should never have rotted. he advised to check with ford for recall, however ford denies any recall with this part.. so no action from ford about a rotted frame! vehicle is now unable to be driven due to safety concerns of control arm becoming unattached.

When attempting to start the vehicle it would take along time to start. vehicle checked nothing found, no trouble code. changed things like fuel fitler, air filter and other simple thing. now vehicle stalls while driving but the vehicle will start back up immediately. again no trouble codes. the truck stalled in traffic 5 times in less than one mile, a road that is traveled several times a day.

Yesterday i drove around town running errands in my 2002 ford escape and it was fine. came home last night (temperature outside was around 27 degrees outside) and parked it in garage. when i went out to garage next day (14 hours later) to leave again i noticed my ford escape had it's back glass that was completely shattered out of it and all over the floor of the garage. all doors to garage were shut and locked. this explosion of glass happened all by itself after being parked there the night before. also have an issue with air bag light and check fuel cap light that has both been staying on and cannot get either to stay off!! worried vehicle is gonna fall apart some day before i get my child to his school one morning..not dependable vehicle after all!! :( seems i have read many many other complaints online about these problems from escape owners wanting to know..are there no recalls for the backglass?? or even anything else for this vehicle?? feeling unsafe for my child to ride in now!!

On rt. 59, just south of northwest hwy (rt. 14) in barrington, my 2002 ford escape xlt was involved in a bizarre incident or accident. while sitting static on level road in a line of traffic with a train-crossing barrier arm keeping traffic safely waiting for the train to pass, my vehicle lurched forward in an unintended acceleration while my foot was firmly pressing on the brake petal. the engine raced at >= 4000 rpm. with continued braking action on my part with no vehicle response, the passenger-side front end of my vehicle hit the 1988 ford f150 truck immediately in front of me. as a side note, i had the 2005 ford recall work performed on the defective accelerator cable, with the cable replacement at packey webb ford dealership service center in wheaton, illinois. there is a safety-hazard risk associated with the vehicle, and i refuse to drive this vehicle even if the approximately $4000.00 damages are repaired, which i have not authorized. i am an experience computer it software/hardware professional, as well as an engineering design controls expert in the health care industry, working for a major product manufacturer (software and hardware). there is a definite safety risk associated with this vehicle make/model, and i want to report this incident to the proper agency. the insurance company, ford dealership, and the authorized service center have done noting to identify the root cause for the vehicle malfunction on design defect; they only treat this as a loss and did not perform initial computer diagnostics prior to compromising the vehicle in their actions to appraise damages to the vehicle. i need this incident properly investigated and reported to the pubic if a safety risk is confirmed.

On or about june 17, 2011, my 2002 ford escape was parked and the ignitition was in the off position when my car alarm went off. when i looked outside i observed smoke bellowing out from under the hood. the next day, i was able to get my vehicle to galpin ford, prescott, az, where they diagnosed the abs module has overheated and needs to be replaced. i was given an estimate of $720.00 to repair the problem. upon further investigation i have discovered that the service brakes, hydraulic: antilock; control unit module was recalled by ford (#07s51)on april 23, 2007 and continues to be open. i was in contact with angel; service manager for vison ford/lincoln in alamagordo, nm on or about june 30th to follow up on the work they had done in may 2007 concerning this problem. he informed me that when they inspected the vehicle in 5/07, there was no problem and that it was properly inspected, and they placed grease on it , and are not willing to pay for this repair. on or about july 1, 2011, tony pacini, service manager at galpin ford, prescott, az submitted a claim to the ford motor co. regarding this repair at no cost to me. upon further inspection, galpin ford has also discovered another recall problem (nhtsa #07e023000)service brakes, hydraulic: foundation components: master cylinder and that brake fluid has leaked from the rear of master cylinder and has leaked on the vehicle into the power brake booster. i have been experiencing no brakes when i put my foot on the brake pedel. despite these recall problems being invesitgated, neither ford motor company; galpin ford, prescott az; or vision ford lincoln, almagordo, nm, feel that they are not responsible for the repairs and have told me i must bare the enormous costs for these repairs on my own and/or drive the vehicle unsafely. i have been stranded in prescott, az for over 3 weeks, and am tired of wrangling with all three dealership/companies and need your help in investigating this situation! thank you!

I drove my vehicle home from work (less than 5 miles). when i pulled into my driveway and parked my vehicle, smoke began to pour out from the engine compartment. when i opened the hood there were flames directly in front of the driver side near the fire wall. these flames were originating from the abs module location.

While accelerating on an on-ramp entering a state highway, traffic ahead of me came to a stop. i went from applying pressure on the gas pedal to immediately moving my right foot to the brake pedal to apply pressure. the brake pedal gave very little resistance. i depressed the pedal all the way to the floor of the vehicle. my vehicle came to a very slow stop as if i was only lightly depressing the brake. my tires did not skid as i would expect and the vehicle took several seconds to finally come to a very slow and gradual stop. the stop was so slow and gradual that i could not even feel momentum pushing my body forward as usually experienced when suddenly braking.

Front lower sub-frame is rotted out and the vehicle is unsafe to drive. (my service garage, who have maintained my vehicle continuously since i bought it, says this is very premature for this condition to occur.)

The vehicle was parked in the driveway. while turning the ignition to start, there was a catastrophic engine explosion. the hood largely contained the fire. luckily no one was injured and the fire did not last long and did not spread to the surroundings. a tow truck was called and the repair shop technician found the intake manifold had blown to pieces. a code on the system indicated a misfire on cylinder 5. the vehicle was repaired for $1720, including cam position sensor, intake manifold, and ignition coil, relating to the incident.

Our rear hatch window on our 2002 ford escape xls exploded overnight while sitting undisturbed in our garage. it had been sitting for 10 hours in our enclosed garage when it exploded for no reason. the temperature outside was in the single digits. i'm wondering if the rear defrost wasn't cut off when the car was shut off? when i started the car after the window shattered the rear defrost was on. there are other reports on the internet with similar occurrences. rear window exploding on ford escapes sounds common. insurance company is suppose to be in contact with me, but i imagine we will be paying most of the repair out of pocket since we haven't met a deductible.

My 2002 ford escape caught fire while i was asleep. luckly a neighbor saw the fire and started to wet down my house and we then both attempted to put the fire out. we were not able to and had to call the fire department. i asked for an investagation and the fire marshall pointed me to ford recall (# 07s51) of which i was not informed of. i had an appointment at the ford dealership for my abs/brake light on.

No events leading to this... it just started about 2 yrs ago summer of 08. clunking noise in the front of car. can be felt by the steering wheel (which also has the squeeking problem). occurs only when the temperature outside is warm. went to the ford dealer several times complaining of this... never was able to recreate the problem. finally had both left and right arm assembly link, bolt, hex for front suspension replaced jun 09. on sept 09 noise returned and had everything tightened, lubed. problem went away until again the weather warmed up then is now back worse than ever. not only when turning the wheel but when driving straight.
