AQ10001FORD MOTOR COMPANY11/18/2010Fleet Vehicle Recall Completion Audit
The agency, particularly in recent months, has been informed of incidents involving allegations of personal injury and death claimed to have been caused by safety defects and failures to conform to minimum federal motor vehicle safety standards (fmvss) on rental car vehicles for which a safety recall to remedy the safety defect or noncompliance had allegedly not been performed prior to the rental car company's lease of the vehicle.nhtsa understands that there is presently a petition before the federal trade commission (ftc) seeking to prohibit at least one rental car company from renting vehicles on which safety recall campaign remedies remain outstanding.the purpose of this audit query (aq) is to investigate recall remedy completion by rental car companies on the above-listed safety recall campaigns.these campaigns were chosen due to their inclusion of vehicles used in the rental market.this information is expected to provide the agency an indication of how completely and how quickly rental car fleets, in general or individually, perform necessary recall-related repairs or other remedies on the vehicles owned and then leased for use on the roadways.this aq is opened.

I entered my car to see the dash board lights were illuminated even with car in off poistion and key removed. tried starting car and there was no response. tried several times and eventually got car to start. drove several blocks, parked and the car and even after removing key, could not get car to turn off. after several attempts, the car turned off. i could hear what sounded like a fan running in the area near my break fluid. after letting the car sit for about 2 hours, i needed to drive home. i drove serveral hundred yards before i started to smell burning rubber. when i saw black smoke coming from under my hood i pulled off the road. the flames started to get bigger. i call 911 but they did not arrive in time to save the car. the car was engulfed in flames. the engine and interitor were torched. cause of fire has yet to be determined.

My car is misfiring and stalling on de-acceleration (when we slow down). it started recently. first it had the engine light come on. we had it tested by a mechanic with the electrical reader and it said we needed a new coil. we replaced the coil, did a full tune up and it still is not working. after many hours of research we see that the ford escape pcm has been a consistent manufacturing problem and the 2003 ford escape had this problem. i call ford and they tell me my car was not covered under that particular recall. however, it is clear that this is a serious problem with ford escape. what i am to do? drive the car like this and risk it stalling in an intersection or on a hill and have the possibility of a crash? ford should be held responsible for this manufacturing problem that they have documented over the years.

When i recently had my routine maintenance check on my vehicle i was horrified when my mechanic informed me that the front sub frame was rusted from the inside out! can you imagine my utter shock when my mechanic advised me that this vehicle is prohibited to be driven since catastrophic outcomes would be likely? how very fortunate nothing fatal took place while being in this vehicle; because based on the condition of the sub frame it could have been my reality to suffer detrimental consequences. my young children are in this suv every single day and to think their lives were at risk just by being a passenger has sickened me beyond words. i had no other choice but to get it repaired asap, so i informed the customer relationship center of ford motor company as instructed by their website and all they could do was apologize for any inconvenience. this frightening situation goes far beyond from being an inconvenience it could have been a major life threatening issue. i was not asking ford for a new vehicle, i simply was asking for assistance towards a major expense that was not caused by my lack of protecting my major investment with routine maintenance checks but by ford having defective sub-frames installed in their vehicles. my mechanic has never seen such a structural defect as this ever before! ford has already manufactured vehicles that involved major recalls for the the exact same problem, so quite naturally other ford models could suffer the same dangerous consequences with regards to the front sub frame . i believe an investigation on this horrific issue is deemed a necessity due to the history of ford's sub frames. this has been very devastating to me and i can't imagine allowing another consumer to endure this major fear. your attention to this is appreciated.

The vehicle stalls (loses all power and comes to a halt) at low speeds even sometimes in reverse gear. it has happened at parking lots at low speeds or when i am just about to take off at traffic lights. only happens at low speeds. have taken it to the dealership multiple times, have gotten the computer module reprogrammed, changed battery, alternator, idler controller valve and relay so far. none of these have fixed the problem, the car is back with the mechanic for other checks. the problem has been very intermittent, it sometimes happens and sometimes does not!. taking the key out and putting it back and starting the engine again gets me moving again!. so far i have been lucky not to be hit by anyone from behind!.
