This is being resubmitted, since i believe the reevaluation of the 09 and newer ford escapes is the same problem that has been occuring with the earlier year ford escapes, but has not received review. a defective pcm which causes complete auto shutdown, burning out the coils, etc. has documented complaints all over the internet in car complaint and buying sites for this vehicle. the pcm is defective on the escape and when it stops functioning all power is lost, and this occurs without warning leaving one without brakes, power steering, etc. this has been a known problem with ford and yet ford refuses to correct the problem and the bill is in the neighborhood of $2500-3000 to be shouldered by the customer. malfunction, however, has more ominous sequelae than monetary cost, in that it may cost lives from crashes. ford should recall these vehicles to repair the causation, but obviously ford needs pressure from the public and in particular the nhtsa !

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. the contact stated while driving approximately 50 mph, the vehicle stalled. the contact was able to restart the vehicle on the shoulder of the road. the failure continued intermittently. the vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostics. the vehicle was repaired. the contact was not aware of the repairs performed. the approximate failure mileage was 95,000.

I am just glad that when the car died, i was just pulling into a parking garage. all i could think of was what could have happened if i was going the 55 mph speed limit minutes earlier. very heavy braking, manual steering. i think ford wants someone to die in a few crashes before they will come out with a recall. i had to wait 2 weeks for a re-manufactured computer as they were heavily back-ordered. this indicates that a lot more people than just 32 or so have had this problem. i had to pay for 3 weeks or car rentals and only got to pay what i did because of family ties to the ford dealer. it would have been over $2800 dollars if parts and labor were charged retail. ford knew there were problems by issuing two tbs, yet they preferred to let us pay for their error. i found out that ford may repair it if it had less than 80,000 miles and less than 8 years old. how many people need to be in accidents before this vehicle is recalled? *tr

Was driving my car at 45 miles per hour the car began to sputter and came to very quick halt in the middle of traffic. i had the car towed to my local garage, it was hooked up to a computer diagnostic tool. the trouble codes came up p0351, p0352, p0353, p0354 which i'm being told it will cost me $ 750.00 to replace all 6 coils, $1100.00 to replace the pcm module and i will need 6 new spark plugs. these prices don't include labor or diagnostic costs either. in doing some investigation this is a known issue with ford motor company and the emission warranty only covers you for 8 years/80,000 miles. not sure what a pcm module is or what coils do. thank you ford motor company for installing faulty parts in my motor when they built it in 2005. now this is my problem and at my expense...... ford sent out a tbs regarding the wrong plugs were installed which leads to this issue. tsb 09-2-6 and tsb 10-18-10 is evidence enough they new there was clearly an issue with the factory installed spark plugs causing rfi damage to the cop's and subsequently the ecm. it appears they were betting that most vehicles would have issues outside the 80,000 mile federal warranty. *tr

While traveling northbound on interstate 476 car suddenly lost power and would refuse to accelerate over 10 mph. luckily it was early on a sunday morning, and not high-traffic time, we successfully pulled the car over to the shoulder. our mechanic has been working on and researching the issue. turns out ford is aware and has issued a service bulletin that the computer is faulty, and affects the catalytic converters, spark plugs, and coils. a quick search on car complaints told us we were not the only ones, and it appears to be a time rather than mileage failure. while most are complaining about the minimum $2,000 fix, we are thankful it did not cause harm to us or anyone else. how many 2005 ford escapes are on the roads these days? *tr

After luckily just exiting interstate 70, but entering highway 40 my vehicle completely died with all electrical functions inoperative (obviously including power brakes, steering, etc). this occurred on an upgrade with a city bus directly behind me which was forced to swerve into the adjacent lane. auto would not restart and it was towed to a neighboring ford dealership. there was absolutely no warning of a check engine light etc. at the dealership i was informed that an electrical engine module had burned out which also completely fried all the engine coils. (a complete electrical tune-up,etc. had been performed about a year earlier). i was also informed that the diagnosis was possible because of a ford internal memo indicating what could happen if the module malfunctioned. the good news is that i had just exited an interstate, but this could have been disastrous and it seems that ford was aware of the possibility of this problem. the cost now to fix the problem is $2600 and i have no assurance that this couldn't happen again with more severe squealed. *tr

I own a ford escape 2005 four door 4wd that has been every 2-3 years in the shop for coils and computer damage. ford has a problem with these cars and the problem is that last friday i was driving on a main road when all of a sudden my car just died while i am driving in a 50 mile zoned road. luckily, i was able to quickly maneuver the vehicle to a safe spot. i was informed that it will cost $2700 to replace the computer that was shorted out due to the coils going bad - i had the coils changed two times since 2007 ford knows about this problem ford srb 09.2.6 and tsb 09-2-6 ignition coil problem that so many others are having with this car - the car stalls always when driving 50 or more on a main road or highway and it is very dangerous to all of a sudden lose power on a highway at high speeds and not being able to even move the steering wheel to glide your car safely to the side of the road due to the steering locking up because the car dies totally. the computer codes that show up are p0351 -p0354 and some other ones that i didn't write down when i was talking to the thompsons mechanic. i cant believe that this year and model wasn't recalled - according to thompsons, there is a back order for the computer module for this car, two weeks minimum due to so many escapes 2005 needing this same computer because it was shorted out prematurely and unsafely. it never happens when you drive less than 50 so this is strange and very dangerous.i would like ford to repay us the damages and costs that us customers, have dished out recurring every 2-3 years. coils should not have to be replaced that many times nor should the plugs and absolutely not the computer. please look into this and make ford do a recall and retroactive since they already have so many complaints about this same problem but they don't want to or refuse to do a mass recall. *tr

I was driving on the interstate at 70mph at night when my 2005 ford escape started jumping and then completely lost power with no warning. i immediately pushed the flasher button and coasted off of the interstate, i was able to crank the vehicle back up and get to the nearest exit and call for help. the repair shop found the # 4 ignition coil had burned up. thank god there was not an 18 wheeler knocking on my back door, would not be here to complain and no one would have ever figured out what happened. *tr

Prior to the incident in question the car had a few days of abnormal behavior including hesitation and rough idle. the incident occurred on christmas eve while i was driving down a two lane highway. while traveling 50 mph the car lost power and although i was terribly scared, i managed to get off the highway safely. i was told that the computer failed (pcm) which is very expensive to fix hence the reason it has been almost a year. i am a retired widow raising my 12 year old granddaughter feeling stuck between a rock and a hard place; not able to afford the repairs and unable to do things without a car. i see that many many others have had this same issue, please help ford face their neglect with regard to this issue. thank you

On way home, car shut off while going 35 mph. coils started to smoke. towed to nearest dealer and was told all coils, plugs and powertrain module needs to be replaced at $2500. researched legitimate websites and found many owners with same problem that had fixed more than once at $2500. was told by dealer that nhtsa only recalls for safety & emissions. this is clearly a safety issue, especially if going a high speed on interstate and car shuts off without warning. thankfully my kids were not in car. *tr

While driving 45mph the car just cut off is a high traffic area. the car behind me had to swerve to miss rear-ending me! i had my 3 year old daughter w/ me at the time! our mechanic has informed us that apparently ford motor company is aware that bad plugs were installed in these cars and would cause computer failure! nothing was told to us regarding this issue when we purchased the car! when emailed fmc they informed me that this is not a safety issue & a recall is not required. how can this not be a safety issue when the car completely dies w/out warning??? *tr

Driving down highway at aprox. 55 mph. theft light came on in vehicle and vehicle quickly decelerated. from the research that i gathered, this is a known problem to ford. faulty spark plugs were installed in some 2005 escapes. the spark plugs emit a radio frequency that cause the coils to basically fry your computer. ford has released a bulletin about this (tsb 09-2-6) but refuses to issue a recall. this is a huge safety issue, as decelerating on a major highway without brake lights has the potential to cause a terrible accident. contacted ford's corporate office and was offered no assistance. i would like to have my spark plugs at least checked at no charge. the cost, for only checking the spark plugs to see if they are the ones affected is $90. i believe that this should be a recall. ford is well aware of the problem but refuses to take any steps to fix this. *tr

My daughter was driving our 2005 ford escape on the highway at 55 mph when it completely cut off on her. luckily she was able to get to the side of the highway without incident. she got the car back on and made it home, however, it was jerking and misfiring all the way home. we took it to a mechanic who said it needed spark plugs and 2 coils to the tune of $700.00. when we went to pick it up we were told that the computer was shot and that we had to take it to the ford dealership. the ford place is replacing all 6 coils and the computer for $2300.00. apparently there is a known problem with ford installing the wrong spark plugs in these models at the factory causing the coils and the computer to go out. i don't understand why ford has not recalled this problem. going down a highway at 55 mph and you car cuts off is a safety issue in my eyes!! *tr

I was driving home from work and the car stalls out of nowhere. then the check engine, oil, and abs warning lights all lit up. after about 20 min i tried starting up the car again and it started up and slowly made it home. the following day it happen again! luckily no one was behind me, otherwise i would have been rear ended. immediately looked online describing the issue to see if i could find out what could be causing this, and come to find out an overwhelming amount of people have experienced the same thing! this is a safety hazard and had i been on a major highway the result could have drastically different. it is appalling that this has been a know issue and ford has done nothing to remedy the safety of it's customers. *tr

Driving at 55 mph and car began to lurch and buck. car shut off 3 times in busy intersection with no warning and almost caused an accident. took to mechanic, and learned that the computer system had shorted out due to manufacturers using incorrect spark plugs. apparantely, this is a common issue with this year and make. this is a dangerous problem, and can occur anywhere, doing any speed! the computer system must be replaced and it is very expensive.

Driving down the road on my way to work when the car suddenly stalls. the mechanics said there is a tsb tsb 09-2-6 out for this problem. ford installed bad plugs that short out the coil packs and then fries the computer costing the poor consumer around $2000 dollars giving codes po351-po354. i was a ford person for life but not anymore they should do a recall this is bad business. *tr

Driving my ford escape 2005, 35mph, heard a thump/bang then very loud rattling from the back of the vehicle. arrived home, found that the right rear shock, shock mount, and a dinner-plate-sized chunk of wheel well had punched up into the back of the vehicle. opened the liftgate, saw the shock mount flopping around inside the car and a dangling cluster of wires that had been shredded by the jagged metal. entire right side of the rear compartment had been shoved up 10cm. husband was shocked, sure i must have hit something, but i had not. right rear wheel well had completely rusted out underneath the undercoating. could not see the rust from the outside, so did not know it was happening. checked left rear wheel well, saw no rust, but undercoating lifts right off to reveal terrible rust underneath as well. vehicle is not safe to drive, no shock, water and road debris would fly right up into the car through the huge hole. this kind of damage is incredible. estimate for repair from dealership (brondes ford, toledo) was $5752.34. certainly can not afford that. researched online for repair alternatives and found dozens of other people with the same type of damage to the same vehicle make and model. reported the damage to ford customer relationship hotline, was informed that no recall has been issued for this vehicle, and that they were unaware that this was a common, frequent, or widespread problem. they did not consider it a defect. this is extremely dangerous. my children were afraid we were going crash. easily could have lost control if this had happened while turning a corner, merging into traffic, driving 65mph on the highway, etc. i am certain, however, that once ford motor company realizes the potential harm this defect can cause to life and property, they will be determined to do right by their loyal customers. *tr

Was on an access road onto interstate 4 in tampa, car completely shut down and i was able to barely steer it to the side of the road, since it was a large overpass i had more than typical room to get the car stopped. later i was told by the ford dealership that coils were damaged and pcm computer went out. i checked carcomplaints.com and i found numerous complaints for this same issue with cost to fix it from $1300 to $2700. evidently ford is aware of this total engine shut down problem that is caused by a computer failure. in most cases people are driving the car and it completely stalls with little or no warning and minimal maneuverability. i was fortunate it happened on the overpass and not on the busy interstate. *js

My escape began missing and then died at 65mph, narrowly avoided accident. towed to dealership: bad coils, bad computer. dealership replaced these items. problem quickly returned. this time more bad coils. (some bad coils are same ones they just replaced). dealership replaced sparkplugs this time. problem returned the next day. dealership has had vehicle a week and a half this time and has no clue how to repair. *tr

While driving at approximately 40 mph, the car shook and died. i pulled into the turn lane and some helpful people assisted me in pushing my car to the nearest parking lot. i had my car towed to the mechanic that told me that i needed to have my engine coils and plugs replaced and that ford had put out a bulletin explaining this problem. after they fixed that, i learned that i also had to have the computer replaced because the engine coils and plugs caused a problem with the computer. i decided to search the internet to see if anyone else was having the same problem. i found many websites and forums explaining the very same problem occurring in other 2005 ford escapes. it seems that if this many people are having the same exact problem (enough for ford to put out a bulletin explaining how to fix it), then ford should take steps to rectify the situation. from the information i have found, there is a manufacturing defect that does not show up until well after the warranty is no longer good. this is a problem that is occurring to many people who have the exact same car and ford should do more than explain how to fix it. a recall is necessary because the problem is the caused by faulty manufacturing. *tr

We were accelerating to get on the interstate when the vehicle suddenly died without warning. no telling what would have happened if we were driving at freeway speeds. we coasted to the breakdown lane and had the vehicle towed to the ford dealer who stated the computer (pcm), all the coil over plugs (cop) and spark plugs were damaged and needed replacement. this is a known issue as it is described exactly in ford service bulletin tsb 09-2-6. the spark plugs in the 2005 and 2006 cause radio frequency interference with the pcm which damages the pcm and the other components. the least ford could have done was notify us that replacing the spark plugs could have prevented this very expensive repair. the problems don't end there. a few days after the repair we were again accelerating to get on the interstate when the vehicle lost power and would not go over 50mph. we brought the vehicle back to the ford dealer who stated the catalytic converters (there are 3 of them) were clogged due to raw fuel coming in contact with the converters probably due to the previous engine problems. the cost to fix the converters is even more than the cost of the initial repair. we've decided to not have the dealer repair the vehicle as the total cost of all the repairs would exceed the value of the vehicle. we called ford customer service and they were of no help in this situation. i think ford should cover the costs of these repairs for an issue knew existed. i don't understand why there hasn't been a recall for this problem as i see that it has happened to a lot of other 2005 escapes listed in your database. i imagine we will more of these failures as these vehicles age. *tr

While driving down the road car just quit towed to dealership only to find out the computer shorted out which also destroyed all the coils. i just printed otu 13 pages of this having happened to othe escape oweners and that a ford service bulletin (09-2-6) was at one time issued--- this will cost a ton of money to correct for a problem ford has known about for some time. when mine quit i had smoke pouring out from under the hood so there was a potential for a fire and just quiting with no warning-- why has ford not had a recall on this issue for what could have been a life threating situation?

I was on my way to work in the morning on a busy highway. just got into the passing lane and the whole thing died right there in the passing lane. thank god no one was very close to me and that there was a policeman coming down the mountain and saw me. he pulled behind me to block the lane. this was a very unsafe situation. if someone would have been close in back of me, they would have ass-ended me or would have had to quickly get in another lane or oncoming traffic. i had to have the vehicle towed to the garage. replaced the spark plugs, all 6 coils and the computer was fried. after a bit of research online, i saw that there are many complaints about this unsafe issue with the 2005 escape. some suddenly stopping on the interstate. from what i have read, it is due to the spark plugs ford installed in the 2005 escepe. not understanding why there is no recall. this is a very unsafe situation, that ford can stop by putting out a recall. would they rather have a law suite when someone loses their life due to their negligence that can be prevented. this was a quite an expensive bill that i had to pay which could have been prevented if ford would have issued a recall. i will think twice before buying another ford.

March 2011. i was driving down the highway and my vehicle acted like a hiccup or misfire. i thought it was a fluke, but it happened again a few miles later then all of the sudden, it started chugging really bad and eventually died. it was after midnight on a very low traveled area and i had my two year old in the car with me.. luckily it started back up and i was able to drive a few more miles (thank god) to a hotel for the night. if this would have happened 45 minutes earlier....i would have been an hour to the nearest town! not a great feeling with a toddler in the car, an unfamiliar road, and after business hours. come to find out it was the coil packs at first, so we replaced two of them like the mechanic suggested. then they called and said that didn't fix the problem and we now needed a new computer. not knowing any different, we replaced the computer. just last friday the same exact thing happened to me....so this would be six coil packs and two computers in a year.....not happy! we do not have the money to keep making repairs like this. not a huge ford fan at this point...and very sick to my stomach to read soooo many complaints about similar situations from others all across the country. there are a lot of hard working people out there who can't afford to have vehicle malfunctions like we're having. someone is going to get killed if they haven't already with this uncertain problem occuring! please do something!

The check engine light came out on dashboard,i took the car to dealer, and i was told that the fuel rail pressure needed to be changed, few months ago i took my car to the dealer and they did a complete diagnose and nothing was wrong,i search about this problem, and found out that so many owners of the same type of car have exactly the same complaint,it seems that ford motor had the same problem with other type of cars on the same item(fuel rail pressure) and had a recall on these cars, why not on ford escapes???

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. while stopped at a stop light the vehicle stalled without warning. the contact was able to restart the vehicle. the failure occurred sporadically. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic. the technician stated the torque converter would have to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the approximate failure mileage was 60,000. ds

My wife got into her escape to return home and it would not run properly. it was missing badly and lacked adequate power to pull itself. i took my escape to the repair shop and was appauled by their findings. i am going to quote directly from the diagnostic report i received. some escape/mariner vehicles built on or before 10/3/2005 , equipped with a 3.0l engine may exhibit a malfunction indicator lamp (mil) on with two or more diagnostic trouble codes (dtc's) for coil on plug (cop) primary circuit faults (p0351-p0356). this may be due to the cop and powertrain control module (pcm) reacting to radio frequency interference from the spark plugs. my repair technician told me that this was a common problem with vehicles like mine. after searching the web, i found one person whose escape died while on the interstate and during heavy traffic and plenty of others with similar circumstances. i suppose i was lucky because my problem happened in a parking lot. i had to replace my powertrain control module and all six coils at a cost of over $1200. i saved labor costs by doing the work myself, but others i read about didn't have the same fate. my technician also told me they have seen this problem numerous times and that i should save my receipts because ford may issue a recall. my vehicle went from running perfectly to not running at all without any warning. i had to replace the transmission in this same vehicle at only 37000 miles, but that's another story. needless to say i am extremely dissappointed.

The first issue i had with my car was in december of 2010. i immediately took my car to a repair place and they told me that the coils and the plugs were out and that they needed to be replaced. i assumed that this was just time to get this repaired because my car was right over the 100,000 mile mark. everything seemed fine until may of 2011 when the problem returned. this time i took my car to a ford service center. this time i noticed that my car would run ok up to about 35 mph and then after that speed it would start jerking. if i take my foot off the gas it stops, but if i leave my foot on the gas and continue to accelerate, the car shuts off completely. i havent taken my car anywhere that i have to drive over 45mph but recently i noticed that if i try to accelerate past 35, that instead of jerking to turn my car off, the harder i push the gas, it feels like i am pushing the brake with that same intensity when i havent even touched the brake. im afraid that while pushing the gas, the car is going to brake and that someone else is going to slam into the back of my car and hurt my 2 yr old son in his carseat in the back. i avoid driving this car unless i absolutely have to because it is dangerous. it seems that many other owners of the same car i have are having the same or a similar issue. this really needs to be checked into because ford is aware that this is a common issue but will do nothing about it. it seems like they are waiting for someone to get hurt before the assume responsibility.

In my 2005 ford escape xlt v6 3.0l on 11/16/11, i was driving east bound on i55 towards chicago at approximately 55 mph when the engine started bad misfiring and the completely died (no power or engine). with no power steering and no brakes, i attempted to steered toward the shoulder. i waited about 10 minutes and tried to restart and was unable. i had the vehicle towed to roesch ford 333 w grand ave bensenville, il 60106. i was advised by the service manager that the engine was misfiring on 4 of the 6 cylinders and that they would need to replace the pcm, 6 coils, 6 plugs and calibrate, total $2,114.21. i decided to do some research online and found numerous people experiencing the same problem. there are multiple tsb: tsb 05-11-1,tsb 09-02-06 tsb 09-02-06 and tsb 10-18-10. the problem is: the wrong spark plugs were installed at the factory. this combo of wrong plugs causes the coils to send emi/rfi back to the pcm (powertrain control module) burning out the pcm.emi/rfi is emitted from sparking device,in this case a set of bad spark plugs. this causes the vehicle to miss-fire, lose power, or in many cases, have total engine failure. wrong spark plugs/bad cop's/un-shielded pcm box/poorly engineered & un-tested, multi-changed, rare pcm and it's the $12.50 radio frequency interference device. multiple online complaints/problems: http://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/escape/2005/electrical/powertrain_control_module_pcm_failure.shtml http://www.fordforumsonline.com/forum/ford-escape/643-2005-ford-escape-pcm-ecm-computer-failure.html http://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=199403 repaired. then check engine light. now it needs 2 catalytic coverters $2,500 because of pcm/coil. total $4,500 numerous complaints extreme safety issue! please help! mike gibney 312-451-8585

My 2005 ford escape was bought new. the first situation occurred in 2007. car started misfiring on major nyc highway at 50 miles an hour at night and finally stalled out. made it to side of highway and waited for tow truck. that situation cost me a new computer coils and whatever else was necessary in order to repair car adding up to 1300. after that and at the present time, november 20011 i have experienced several stallings on highways leaving me in unsafe scenarios that could have been extremely dangerous. i have replaced countless coils, plugs, had catalytic converter issues, along with alarm tripping, the interior lights going off for no reason and now after a trip from ny to va my car let me down again. delaying my travel home and having to stay in va for repair finding out i need another computer. major disappointment and a money pit. attention has to be brought to this matter and the hundreds of other customers who have experienced the same situation. ford has to acknowledge these major problems and move in a direction to remedy them. this is a huge safety issue. it's not one car failing on the highway it's multiple and the evidence is in the reviews. the car has 92,000 miles and with the amount of money i have dumped into it i should have a luxury automobile sitting in my drive way. i can no longer put up with this and have no other choice but to escape from my ford escape. it's not safe! and i demand action be taken and want to be acknowledged and contacted. *tr

The pcm module on the ford escape dies during operation. while driving in mid transit the car died, and would not restart in the middle of the road. i have heard other stories of people driving on the highway, and having this problem happen to them going 60,70, and even 80 mph. mine was only going about 30, and no cars were behind me. the module has been replaced twice, and could be extremely dangerous if died on a busy highway or interstate.

On several at least 12 occations, while driving between 30-65 mph the car (2005 ford espae) stubbles and the theft light appears. in one case we were about to pass a vehicle on a two lane highway and had to brake and swerve suddenly to avoid a head-on collission. vehicle has been taken to ford several times and no codes were found and they have still not addressed the problem. i did some research which appears that the pcm is likely damaged due to a rf issue with the incorrect spark plugs being installed on the early manufactured 2005 ford escapes. unfortunately ford will not doing anything until the computer actually is destroyed, which also frys the coils (appox. $3,000). dealerships will not do anything for us and the corporate office told us the same. we now have a low mileage vehicle that cannot be trusted safely that cannot be fixed without spending $3,000+ for a problem that ford has known about for several years.

I am a wedding photographer and while traveling about 4.5 hours away from home to shoot a wedding i had problems about 2 hours into my trip. i was on interstate 20 just outside of columbia, sc. i was in the left hand lane behind a semi truck, there was another semi truck in the right lane beside me and behind me i had a large van. i was going about 65-70 when suddenly, the car lost all power including the steering and all the warning lights blinked on. i somehow regained control of the car by shifting in neutral and restarting. i hate to think what would have happened had i not been able to react as fast as i did as the van behind me had to slam on his breaks to keep from hitting me. once the semi truck was cleared of the right lane i got over and turned on my flashers. since i had it running i was too scared to pull over on the side. i got to my nearest exit and pulled over. i turned off the vehicle and all the warning lights went off except the abs and the check engine light. i restarted and drove about a mile to a mechanic. they could not see anything wrong but heard the misfire. the car was towed to classic ford in columbia, sc. i had to rent a car to finish my trip as i couldn't let down a couple about to be married. i just got the estimate to the tune of over $2700.00. it's the pcm module along with coil, spark plugs and a few other things. i am now debating about weather to fix it or not as all the reviews i have read it seems like people continue to have problems after it's fixed. it sounds like ford really needs to figure out a way to fix this chronic problem before someone dies in an accident.

2005 ford escape was driving down the road and the car cut out, causing a major safety concern. it was taken to the garage to be repaired. the diagnostic test said it was the coils. the coils were repaired and the car continued to misfire. it was later known that the computer was fried and needed to be replaced. after some internet research, it appears that this is a very common problem with the ford escape.

We were driving from pa to ga for a wedding in my 2005 ford escape. i have 65,000 miles on my escape. the entire car lost all power...no power steering, gas, abs, etc. all of the warning lights in the car came on and we lost everything going 75 on a highway in n.c. we were able to get to a service station who then replaced 2 coils and 2 spark plugs. then they realized that the entire computer was dead, the pcm. ford said they were on backorder so it would be about a week, as they moved us to the front of the line. we had to rent a car for a week while we waited for the part...finishing our trip to ga for the wedding, then back up to pa the next day (our home). we had to go back to n.c. in the rental car (another 114 hours round trip) to exchange cars back when mine was finally fixed. the ford dealer replaced the pcm but at the same time said that there was another coil bad...another $350 on top of the $750 i already paid (plus $400 for the rental car). after looking online, i have realized that a lot of people have had this same issue...and to expect the coils and computer to go out again, even after replacing them. apparently the 2005 escape was made with a faulty coil pack, and they know about it. when calling ford, they just say, sorry about that, there isn't anything we can do. there are 6 coils in the escape...i have now had 3 replaced...when the others go out, it is expected that the pcm will also go out. i am now afraid to drive my car, as i do not trust it...i never know when i may lose power. we were lucky that something worse did not happen, as my son was also in the car with us.

While driving our 2005 ford escape, we were on the highway, in the acceleration lane, traveling approximately 45 miles an hour accelerating up to 55, the vehicle suddenly shuttered, and then died, the check engine, overdrive, abs, and airbag lights illuminated on the console. i had to hit the hazard lights and put the vehicle into neutral narrowly avoiding being hit by a tractor trailer truck. i was able to maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder. i attempted to restart the vehicle and while it restarted it was misfiring and check engine light was on. the vehicle was unable to move under its own power. we were on the side of a highway with our 4 year old daughter in the car during morning rush hour. thankfully we were not hit and killed by this ford engine failure.

The problem is when driving 2005 ford escape the engine cuts out. when driving on interstate 5 at 60 mph the engine will shut off and then start back up. the theft light lights up when this happens. also, at any speeds the engine will cut out. example is when at stop sign at intersection or cross street, while in drive and proceeding across intersection the cars engine and all electrical will turn off. i will then have to shift car into neutral and restart car and then shift into drive and proceed across intersection hopefully without getting hit from other cars. this has happened with a car full of grandchildren on several occasions. the cars engine cut out happens at greater occurrences when driving up inclines.

I have had recent problems with a rough running engine on my 2005 ford escape. had the problem diagnosed as a faulty pcm computer. repair shop tried to get the computer rebuilt, but could get no help. ford informed us that computers are on backorder for 2 to 3 months. ford released a bulletin descibing the need to replace all spark plugs and ignition coils to prevent pcm damage. it seems to me ford has admitted to this problem, yet offers no help. many other owners have started to see the same problem. the problem seems to be occuring in many more 2005 models, resulting in many very costly repairs.

Smart junction box failure. part# 5l8z15604ga this part controls many of the electronic elements of the vehicle; directional signals, hazard lights instrument panel, horn, locks, windows, security system. various electrical elements fail intermittently because of this defective part. the part is on back-order and continues to be pushed to a later date. as of 11/16, the part is on back-order until jan 17, 2011. i have seen other complaints about this issue, and see that the part has been on back-order since (at least) august 2010. there is obviously a high demand for this part, or it is being redesigned and ford is trying to avoid a recall.

I am writing in concerns to a serious safety issue that ford motor company has failed to address. i am an owner of a 2005 ford escape which i purchased new in november of 2004. i have been waiting two months to have a faulty electrical part, the smart junction box, replaced. since august 23rd my vehicle has been unsafe to operate without this part as my turn signals, head lights, and hazard lights are inoperable, as well as power windows, interior and dash lights, power locks, radio and clock display and my ability to unlatch the rear door. after researching the information myself i was forced to wait another week to be scheduled to have my vehicle scheduled for repair. on sept. 7th the ford mechanic confirmed the part i told him i needed was correct and said part was on back order and should be available in two weeks. on sept.21st, i called to ask if the part was available. it was then that the mechanic said that he neglected to mention the part would not be ordered unless i paid in advance. i paid for the part on sept23. on sept. 29th the general manager at worden-martin called to say there was nothing he could do. i asked if it were possible to have a used part put in temporarily while i wait. i received a reply that i would have to pay $350 to have that part put in with no guarantee that the part would function properly and no compensation if the replacement part were to fail. not wanting to throw away $350 for a faulty part, i felt i had no choice but to wait another week for the part to arrive. after waiting two weeks i never received a call, so i called the dealer to inquire on the part. i was told the part may not be available until oct. 25th. i called ford motor company

I own a 2005 ford escape and have numerous issues since i purchased the vehicle in november 2004. the transmission has been replaced and one coil pack. throughout the time i have owned the vehicle the theft light comes on and tried to shut the vehicle down while i was driving (40+mph). it cleared for a little while after the transmission was replaced, then it returned. ford changed one ignition coil and said that if we changed the spark plugs it would probably fix the theft shut down problem. well we changed the spark plugs and the vehicle continued trying to shut down the vehicle while i was driving(40+mph). now the vehicle will not start at all. there is juice from the battery, all the lights and radio come on, but the car refuses to turn over. we have checked everything possible, including: the battery, fuses, and having it tested by a certified mechanic. the anti-theft system or ford pats ii system seems to be defective which also be connected to the pcm. there are thousands of complaints regarding the 2005 ford escape pats ii system and pcm. i do not understand why a recall has not been forced. the 2005 ford escape were initially released with the wrong spark plugs which causes damage and they did not recall the spark plugs. with these very evident manufacturer defects, and tsbs that have been distributed through ford - there needs to be a recall and items repaired. consumers should not have to pay to fix the problems that ford caused and will not take responsibility for. my vehicle is a 2005 ford escape xlt v6 3.0l purchased at ukiah ford lincoln mercury in ukiah, california.

My wife was going to the bank in our 2005 ford escape with 39150 miles. she heard a noise and stopped to see if she had a flat. everything seemed ok so she continued on. before going one block the dash warning lights came on so she drove around the block and parked the car in the garage. upon exiting she noticed smoke coming from the hood area. while she was trying to call me at work, more smoke began pouring out, she heard a pop and flames and smoke began coming out. a neighbor saw what was going on and called 911. thankfully the prompt response of the fire dept. limited the damage to the vehicle and the home only suffered smoke damage. we are currently living in a motel while the house gets cleaned. the escape was a total loss.

While driving 50 mph without warning the vehicle shut off by itself.if it were not 5:30 in the morning i may have caused an accident or been killed. i was able to restart it, but the engine light came on and it ran very hard. it then gave me a service emissions warning. the mechanic states that all 6 spark plugs and 6 coils need replaced and that the computer system was fried (smv).furthermore, he stated that it was an error in manufacturing in regards to the spark plug installation. i now find that this is a common problem with the 2005 ford escapes but no recalls or notices have been made.

Vehicle fire on 2005 ford escape (vin [xxx]) on 3/23/2010, i noticed the vehicle suddenly (when driving) began to run rough. (like a spark plug had failed). we immediately pulled into a gas station and inspected the engine compartment (for broken belts and the like) no obvious issue was observed. when i started the vehicle again, i noticed the check engine light was on. immediately i drove the vehicle home and contacted a service garage. i was on my way to take the vehicle into service when i noticed an electrical smell. i pulled into the next gas station, opened the hood, and noticed a small fire located at the #1 cylinder coil pack. i used the gas station fire extinguisher to put out the fire. car was towed the rest of the way to the garage. car had been driven no more than 10 miles after first sign of failure. fire was small enough to not involve police or fire departments, so no fire or police report is available. no one was injured and no property damage occurred outside the vehicle. garage said that if i had limited the damage by extinguishing the fire when i did. garage replaced coil pack, wire pigtail (melted), and intake manifold (also melted by fire). old parts are available for inspection. car was repaired but check engine light came back on after 50 miles. care was immediately shut off and will be towed back to garage. failure code is p0351. (same coil that was replaced is showing bad again) car had approx 117,000 miles on it when fire took place. no other major service events in its lifetime. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Car was driving fine, parked for several hours and then it would not start. towed to a shop and all coils were out. after more diagnosis, the spark plugs, the coils (pocs) and the powertrain computer module had to be replaced for a total cost of $2600 on a 5 year old car with 63,000 miles on it. most likely the spark plug rf caused the pcm to crash. had to replace the plugs, coils and pcm including software and programming. i have read on several complaint blogs that ford knows of the problems (defective plugs) and has issued 2 tsb, 05111 and 0926. problem should be under the emission warranty, but ford says it is a ignition problem. i think it is ford's problem and they should be compelled to repair the problem. i have read numerous complaints on blogs for this problem where the car just stops regardless if you are on the freeway or in your driveway.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. while driving 65 mph the vehicle stalled without and prior warnings. the vehicle was towed to a local repair facility. the mechanic replaced the pcm, ignition coil, and the spark plugs. two weeks after the repair, all of the electrical components, including the parts that were replaced had melted. the current and failure mileages were 110,000.

I was driving on the new york state thruway at about 65mph. my car rapidly decelerated and all the panel lights lit up. there was no crash, but that was just luck- had i been in heavy traffic at the time of the incident i probably would have been rear ended. what ultimately failed is my power train control module ( pcm) on my 2005 ford escape. turns out there is a technical service bulletin describing the failure i experienced; refer to ford's bulletin 09-2-6, which supercedes 05-11-1. i got lucky, as i said, because i just happened to be in a break in traffic, which up to that point had been bumper to bumper. the rapid deceleration was the result of losing 3 cylinders, so it occurred without the benefit of brake lights coming on. rapid deceleration, without brake lights, in heavy traffic, due a problem which ford knew about since 2005 (the year i bought the car) sure seem like a severe accident waiting to happen. no notice was provided of the failure prone spark plugs which initiate the failures. *tr

I was on my way to connecticut from maine on 12/24/08. i noticed that while we were traveling on the highway the car started running rough and skipping. i immediately pulled over to the breakdown lane where the car stalled. the car would start but not keep running. called aaa and had to have the car towed to the nearest ford dealership in plainfield ct. vehicle could not be immediately repaired due to the holiday. the car was repaired on dec. 26, 2008. the dealership replaced the power control module and also replaced 2 ignition coils # 2 and 3. could not save pcm because there was a core charge for it, but i do have the ignition coils. vehicle had 38,711 miles when this happened. then on may 17, 2009 the #5 coil failed and had to be replaced. i still have that coil also. the dealer said that the coils were not warrantied under the emission control warranty which is 5 year 50,000 miles. the repairs done in ct totaled $729.48. the subsequent repair was done by me. the cost of the coil was $79.99. *tr

From one day to another the car started shaking when it was at a stop or light and the engine light turned on, the a/c stopped working and cd player too. i took it to the dealer and i was told that the computer needed to be changed and it would cost me about $2000 and this does not include the a/c or cd player. i asked if it could be reset or something cheaper could be done and i was told that no. the guy there said he did not know why this happens but it does and he said that he sees this kind of situation every two months with the ford escapes. i think that if it has happened to so many people and we have to pay over $2000 to repair it, it is not fair for us as consumer because i honestly do not have that kind of money to pay. *tr

There were no events leading up to the breakdown. the car simply quit running. it had fire but would not turn over. we had no problems prior to this. we took it to the ford dealer. the first problem they told us was that the chip in the key was bad. the had a new key made. from there, it was the pcm computer and then a second computer and then 3 power packs. they also replaced the plugs and wires and misc. other parts. *tr

About 6 weeks ago, my wife called me at work to report her 2005 escape made a funny noise when she tried to start it. when i got home that afternoon, i went to investigate it. when i put the key in and turned it on, it exploded. the intake manifold disentergrated and schrapnel from it severed wiring harness, knocked parts off etc. having 39k miles on it i had it towed to a local top rated mechanic. after the mechanic repaired the mechanical damage, he sent it to beach ford for a pcm issue. they replaced the pcm (under ford warranty, admitting that the computer was ?fried? and this has been a problem with other escapes) but absolves any knowledge or responsibility as to why the explosion occurred in the first place because a ?third party person? repaired the car before beach ford saw it. a ?mike? at ford customer service who based on conversations with beach ford, said that repairs by a third party precludes ford from any responsibility as to why the car exploded in the first place. my mechanic has done internet research and found other reports of pcm issues with the escapes causing problems from failures to explosions. a tech at the ford dealer said it has to do with stray voltage being induced into the wiring and going back up into the pcm, but then ford and the service director denied any knowldege of this. ford said the car is repaired (at my expense) and washed their hands of this situation leaving me with a car that has only 39,000 miles on it and exploded in my driveway causing sever damage, and no attempt to investigate why it happened. i have all the damaged parts that were replaced and told ford that. no one will address why it exploded in the first place. what if this happened at 55 mph vice in my driveway, or my wife was home and i opened the hood and had her start the car so i could listen for that noise she said? please help me out. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while the air conditioner was on, there was a hesitation while accelerating during a left hand turn. the dealership was unable to determine a problem, but replaced a chip. five weeks later, the problem returned and the vehicle was taken to the dealership. the dealership was unable to determine the problem, but reprogrammed the computer to the latest specifications. the dealership stated because it was a four cylinder engine, there would be a hesitation with the air conditioner on. *ak

I have a 2005 ford escape. when bringing the car to a stop in traffic it sometimes jumps ahead for sevearl feet before i'm able to bring it to a full stop. i have owned the car for ten months and this has occurred on five separate occasions. i have had the car inspected by the local ford dealer on several different occasions. they have tried but are unable to determine the cause. believe me, it has nothing to do with putting the foot on the wrong pedal, etc. etc. at this point i'm unable to determine whether the problem results from acceleration from the motor or slippage in the braking system. *ak

Consumer complained about a computer problem. when putting vehicle in reverse it went forward, and when putting it in drive it did nothing. consumer took vehicle to repair shop 3 times, but mechanic could not find anything wrong. when vehicle was put on the computer it showed no error message, nothing was wrong. consumer turned the vehicle off and then turned it back on, and it worked fine. consumer should not have to do this because this was a new vehicle, 2005 model. therefore, consumer felt that there was a malfunctioned computer in the vehicle. *ak

Brakes are making noise intermittingly. it sounds like blowing in a bottle. went to the dealership for service 3 times in the first month of ownership. they keep grinding down the rotors and it's not helping. apparantly ford corp. is aware of the problem and are trying to find a cure. they don't know what to do at this point. also, stealth security system failed, and the vehicle had to be towed back to the dealer for repair. this also happened in first month of ownership.

My wife started our 2005 escape and placed our grandaughter in her car seat. my wife smelled something burning and when she looked out her window, she noticed the driver's side mirror was engulfed in flames. she quickly shut the vehicle off, removed my crying grandaughter from her seat, and attempted to put the flames out. she eventually succeeded, but not before the heat cracked the mirror and melted the housing. i took my vehicle to a ford dealership, and it was discovered (and noted) that the heating element inside the mirror melted and started the fire. pictures were taken and sent to ford motor company for repair authorization. ford responded with a letter to me, titled general release of all claims, and directed me to sign it before repairs could be authorized. i did not sign the legal document, as i was unsure of the meaning of all the legal terms. on 18 feb 05, a representative from ford motor comapany consumer affairs called me. (vincent d. kirksey) he was very rude and demanding. he basically told me i had two options: either sign the form and have ford repair my vehicle, or he would rescind the offer and make me go through my insurance company. i asked him several times what the form was for, and he replied it was necessary to authorize the repair and that is was a policy of ford with this type of incident. i told him it sounded like i had a third option - he told me to go ahead and use it - he was rescinding ford's offer to repair my vehicle under warranty. i am concerned with my family's safety - we now drive our 2005 escape with a fire extinguisher in the vehicle - we do not want to burn up or have our vehicle destroyed.
