In a letter dated august 30, 2012, the north carolina consumers council (nccc) petitioned the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) to initiate a defect investigation of alleged electronic throttle body failures resulting in engine stall or surge while driving in model year (my) 2005 through 2012 ford escape vehicles. as supporting evidence, the petitioner cites two recent complaints of stall while driving in my 2009 ford escape vehicles that were diagnosed as failed throttle bodies with diagnostic trouble codes p2111, throttle body stuck open, and p2222, throttle body stuck closed.the petitioner indicates that the owners of both vehicles reported experiencing repeated incidents of stalling and engine surging. in addition, the petitioner states that ford has released a number of technical service bulletins that cover a wide range of vehicles and throttle body issues related to hesitation and stalling, including 08-18-2 and 09-23-5.a copy of the petition will be placed in the public file.the petition will be evaluated for a grant or deny decision.

While driving the car completely went dead. everything turned off. had to drift to side of the road. technician told me it was a pcm problem and needs to replace, coils, plugs and pcm.

This is being resubmitted, since i believe the reevaluation of the 09 and newer ford escapes is the same problem that has been occuring with the earlier year ford escapes, but has not received review. a defective pcm which causes complete auto shutdown, burning out the coils, etc. has documented complaints all over the internet in car complaint and buying sites for this vehicle. the pcm is defective on the escape and when it stops functioning all power is lost, and this occurs without warning leaving one without brakes, power steering, etc. this has been a known problem with ford and yet ford refuses to correct the problem and the bill is in the neighborhood of $2500-3000 to be shouldered by the customer. malfunction, however, has more ominous sequelae than monetary cost, in that it may cost lives from crashes. ford should recall these vehicles to repair the causation, but obviously ford needs pressure from the public and in particular the nhtsa !

I have a random incident with my ford escape 2005, where at times when on cruise control, the engine will accelerate unexpectedly. after many years of driving, and attempting to file a complaint about the issue with ford but refused as it wasn't reproducible when allotted, i think this issue occurs because the cruise control has self adjusted itself when towing a trailer. but after detaching the trailer and taking the truck for a long hilly ride, the engine computer may think it's still towing a trailer and strongly accelerate the engine when going uphill with the cruise control on. this is only based on what i have experience, and include no computer log examination. not the best thing to happen if a police car is around, and being a safe driver. i'm not too concerned about this issue, as i self manage the issue. (tend to self manage a lot of things these days.) this vehicle has served me quite well, except for a loud knock on the front drive axle on this awd - likely a bad bearing that they didn't fix when they fixed it initially. shrugs.

After 5 years of maintaining my vehicle, only one owner, i made my last payment on car, the number 4 cylinder no longer working, never been in a accident, so now i have a suv that looks good but will cost about (5000.00) based on fords estimate. i will never purchase a vehicle from ford again, when i took the suv to ford the sales person told me i just need to get rid of the car its time for another, they will give me 500.00 for my suv i told him my mother has 1989 buick and still running with no major problems. so that not true. suv in garage , i had to buy a camry, i must say i love my camry. will never ever get another ford... so upset. *tr

Our 2005 ford escape has a surging problem.when stopped at a light, every once in a while the engine will suddenly speed up.to keep it from moving forward you have to press hard on the brake pedal.a ford dealership wanted $85.00 to diagnose the problem.this is unacceptable for a safety problem. *tr

My car's gas pedal felt like it became stuck, almost feeling like the car was in neutral even though it was in drive. i was on a hill. then suddenly it sped off fast with a jolt. our mechanic said it needs a new throttle. after doing research on my car's make & model, it appears that this has been an ongoing concern. it's very dangerous. *tr

After luckily just exiting interstate 70, but entering highway 40 my vehicle completely died with all electrical functions inoperative (obviously including power brakes, steering, etc). this occurred on an upgrade with a city bus directly behind me which was forced to swerve into the adjacent lane. auto would not restart and it was towed to a neighboring ford dealership. there was absolutely no warning of a check engine light etc. at the dealership i was informed that an electrical engine module had burned out which also completely fried all the engine coils. (a complete electrical tune-up,etc. had been performed about a year earlier). i was also informed that the diagnosis was possible because of a ford internal memo indicating what could happen if the module malfunctioned. the good news is that i had just exited an interstate, but this could have been disastrous and it seems that ford was aware of the possibility of this problem. the cost now to fix the problem is $2600 and i have no assurance that this couldn't happen again with more severe squealed. *tr

I own a ford escape 2005 four door 4wd that has been every 2-3 years in the shop for coils and computer damage. ford has a problem with these cars and the problem is that last friday i was driving on a main road when all of a sudden my car just died while i am driving in a 50 mile zoned road. luckily, i was able to quickly maneuver the vehicle to a safe spot. i was informed that it will cost $2700 to replace the computer that was shorted out due to the coils going bad - i had the coils changed two times since 2007 ford knows about this problem ford srb 09.2.6 and tsb 09-2-6 ignition coil problem that so many others are having with this car - the car stalls always when driving 50 or more on a main road or highway and it is very dangerous to all of a sudden lose power on a highway at high speeds and not being able to even move the steering wheel to glide your car safely to the side of the road due to the steering locking up because the car dies totally. the computer codes that show up are p0351 -p0354 and some other ones that i didn't write down when i was talking to the thompsons mechanic. i cant believe that this year and model wasn't recalled - according to thompsons, there is a back order for the computer module for this car, two weeks minimum due to so many escapes 2005 needing this same computer because it was shorted out prematurely and unsafely. it never happens when you drive less than 50 so this is strange and very dangerous.i would like ford to repay us the damages and costs that us customers, have dished out recurring every 2-3 years. coils should not have to be replaced that many times nor should the plugs and absolutely not the computer. please look into this and make ford do a recall and retroactive since they already have so many complaints about this same problem but they don't want to or refuse to do a mass recall. *tr

I was driving to work on us 41 south when my 2005 ford escape just started to buck and would not accelerate, i was going approximately 45 mph and the car just shut off. i could not steer or start it again and was almost hit by an 18 wheel vehicle and killed. i immediately put my flashers on and kept retrying to start the car to get it off the road. this could have killed me and others this morning! this is a ford motor company mechanical issue and they knew about this problem with this model vehicle and choose to not recall it!! how many people have died from this problem that we are not aware of??? i took the car and had it checked out and they said that ford issued a bulletin on this exact issue and how to fix it! only now, its going to cost me, the consumer $2000 or more to fix!! i am so upset from it, i am almost paid off on this vehicle and i feel that this issue should be looked into by the attorney general and by the transportation department of safety! *tr

Prior to the incident in question the car had a few days of abnormal behavior including hesitation and rough idle. the incident occurred on christmas eve while i was driving down a two lane highway. while traveling 50 mph the car lost power and although i was terribly scared, i managed to get off the highway safely. i was told that the computer failed (pcm) which is very expensive to fix hence the reason it has been almost a year. i am a retired widow raising my 12 year old granddaughter feeling stuck between a rock and a hard place; not able to afford the repairs and unable to do things without a car. i see that many many others have had this same issue, please help ford face their neglect with regard to this issue. thank you

On way home, car shut off while going 35 mph. coils started to smoke. towed to nearest dealer and was told all coils, plugs and powertrain module needs to be replaced at $2500. researched legitimate websites and found many owners with same problem that had fixed more than once at $2500. was told by dealer that nhtsa only recalls for safety & emissions. this is clearly a safety issue, especially if going a high speed on interstate and car shuts off without warning. thankfully my kids were not in car. *tr

I was trying down the highway doing about 55 mph all the lights came on the car, i was able to get to the side of the road. i stopped the car for about 5 minutes was able to restart and drive another 1/2 mile and it happened again. got the car towed to a mechanic, who placed engine on code machine and states my engine coils were bad. replaced all of my engine coils and the car is still riding like a dump trunk. took do a ford dealership who charged me 160.00 to put on machine and told me it was my engine coils, i have replaced all the coils. i am just at my witts end. i will not ever buy a ford again. as a side note, i put a transmission in this truck about 2 years ago and the dealer who fixed my car, didn't even give me a rental to drive. its a new and used car dealership and they couldn't even give me one of their cars to drive. are you serious? *tr

My daughter was driving our 2005 ford escape on the highway at 55 mph when it completely cut off on her. luckily she was able to get to the side of the highway without incident. she got the car back on and made it home, however, it was jerking and misfiring all the way home. we took it to a mechanic who said it needed spark plugs and 2 coils to the tune of $700.00. when we went to pick it up we were told that the computer was shot and that we had to take it to the ford dealership. the ford place is replacing all 6 coils and the computer for $2300.00. apparently there is a known problem with ford installing the wrong spark plugs in these models at the factory causing the coils and the computer to go out. i don't understand why ford has not recalled this problem. going down a highway at 55 mph and you car cuts off is a safety issue in my eyes!! *tr

I was driving home from work and the car stalls out of nowhere. then the check engine, oil, and abs warning lights all lit up. after about 20 min i tried starting up the car again and it started up and slowly made it home. the following day it happen again! luckily no one was behind me, otherwise i would have been rear ended. immediately looked online describing the issue to see if i could find out what could be causing this, and come to find out an overwhelming amount of people have experienced the same thing! this is a safety hazard and had i been on a major highway the result could have drastically different. it is appalling that this has been a know issue and ford has done nothing to remedy the safety of it's customers. *tr

Driving at 55 mph and car began to lurch and buck. car shut off 3 times in busy intersection with no warning and almost caused an accident. took to mechanic, and learned that the computer system had shorted out due to manufacturers using incorrect spark plugs. apparantely, this is a common issue with this year and make. this is a dangerous problem, and can occur anywhere, doing any speed! the computer system must be replaced and it is very expensive.

Was on an access road onto interstate 4 in tampa, car completely shut down and i was able to barely steer it to the side of the road, since it was a large overpass i had more than typical room to get the car stopped. later i was told by the ford dealership that coils were damaged and pcm computer went out. i checked carcomplaints.com and i found numerous complaints for this same issue with cost to fix it from $1300 to $2700. evidently ford is aware of this total engine shut down problem that is caused by a computer failure. in most cases people are driving the car and it completely stalls with little or no warning and minimal maneuverability. i was fortunate it happened on the overpass and not on the busy interstate. *js

While driving home from work, i went to accelerate. upon reaching 40. i heard a substantial backfire noise, and the engine shut off in the middle of a busy road causing me to block traffic as i coasted almost into a busy intersection. i was able to put it in neutral and restart the engine after coasting for 100+ feet. after which, the engine began running very rough and rugged never being able to accelerate about 30 mph and causing major traffic problems. i took it to a dealership (varsity ford in ann arbor, mi) and have been told that my 2005 ford escape was in trouble. apparently, my spark plug after being clogged, caused a backfire which blew my ignition coils and sparkplugs and my pcm. i am being quoted $2,200. at my last oil change (3 months ago) varsity ford told me i was getting close to needing a tune up but it was not necessary that day and that i could wait until my next oil change. i was planning on going this weekend because i was heading out of town. had i been told the risk was a $400 tune up vs. a $2,200 blown engine, maybe i would have changed the spark plugs. i'm very distraught at the ford dealership, and now am questioning whether i will ever buy a ford or work with a ford dealership. *tr

While driving on the expressway, my gas pedal snapped forward by itself and accelerated my car. then snapped back and hit my foot in the position it was already in. this has happened before, several times over the course of my ownership of this car. (i bought it new) i ignored it the first few times because i thought it was related to being on cruise control, but this was not always the case. i saw on fox news that there is an ongoing investigation; and called ford to see if they would repair my car and they said no. i am hoping they will have a recall, because i plan on keeping this car for awhile, and don't want to pay for the repairs. thanks. *tr

We were accelerating to get on the interstate when the vehicle suddenly died without warning. no telling what would have happened if we were driving at freeway speeds. we coasted to the breakdown lane and had the vehicle towed to the ford dealer who stated the computer (pcm), all the coil over plugs (cop) and spark plugs were damaged and needed replacement. this is a known issue as it is described exactly in ford service bulletin tsb 09-2-6. the spark plugs in the 2005 and 2006 cause radio frequency interference with the pcm which damages the pcm and the other components. the least ford could have done was notify us that replacing the spark plugs could have prevented this very expensive repair. the problems don't end there. a few days after the repair we were again accelerating to get on the interstate when the vehicle lost power and would not go over 50mph. we brought the vehicle back to the ford dealer who stated the catalytic converters (there are 3 of them) were clogged due to raw fuel coming in contact with the converters probably due to the previous engine problems. the cost to fix the converters is even more than the cost of the initial repair. we've decided to not have the dealer repair the vehicle as the total cost of all the repairs would exceed the value of the vehicle. we called ford customer service and they were of no help in this situation. i think ford should cover the costs of these repairs for an issue knew existed. i don't understand why there hasn't been a recall for this problem as i see that it has happened to a lot of other 2005 escapes listed in your database. i imagine we will more of these failures as these vehicles age. *tr

While driving down the road car just quit towed to dealership only to find out the computer shorted out which also destroyed all the coils. i just printed otu 13 pages of this having happened to othe escape oweners and that a ford service bulletin (09-2-6) was at one time issued--- this will cost a ton of money to correct for a problem ford has known about for some time. when mine quit i had smoke pouring out from under the hood so there was a potential for a fire and just quiting with no warning-- why has ford not had a recall on this issue for what could have been a life threating situation?

While driving at approximately 40 mph, the car shook and died. i pulled into the turn lane and some helpful people assisted me in pushing my car to the nearest parking lot. i had my car towed to the mechanic that told me that i needed to have my engine coils and plugs replaced and that ford had put out a bulletin explaining this problem. after they fixed that, i learned that i also had to have the computer replaced because the engine coils and plugs caused a problem with the computer. i decided to search the internet to see if anyone else was having the same problem. i found many websites and forums explaining the very same problem occurring in other 2005 ford escapes. it seems that if this many people are having the same exact problem (enough for ford to put out a bulletin explaining how to fix it), then ford should take steps to rectify the situation. from the information i have found, there is a manufacturing defect that does not show up until well after the warranty is no longer good. this is a problem that is occurring to many people who have the exact same car and ford should do more than explain how to fix it. a recall is necessary because the problem is the caused by faulty manufacturing. *tr

I was on my way to work in the morning on a busy highway. just got into the passing lane and the whole thing died right there in the passing lane. thank god no one was very close to me and that there was a policeman coming down the mountain and saw me. he pulled behind me to block the lane. this was a very unsafe situation. if someone would have been close in back of me, they would have ass-ended me or would have had to quickly get in another lane or oncoming traffic. i had to have the vehicle towed to the garage. replaced the spark plugs, all 6 coils and the computer was fried. after a bit of research online, i saw that there are many complaints about this unsafe issue with the 2005 escape. some suddenly stopping on the interstate. from what i have read, it is due to the spark plugs ford installed in the 2005 escepe. not understanding why there is no recall. this is a very unsafe situation, that ford can stop by putting out a recall. would they rather have a law suite when someone loses their life due to their negligence that can be prevented. this was a quite an expensive bill that i had to pay which could have been prevented if ford would have issued a recall. i will think twice before buying another ford.

Our 2005 ford escape has been meticulously maintained at the dealer where it was purchased. this can be verifed by checking the service records at dale jarrett ford, indian trail, nc. on 2/25/12, the vehicle was disagnosed as having an oil leak between the main engine block and the crankshaft cradle. the seal between these two foundational structural parts of the engine is a simple applied bead of silicone sealant, rather than a fixed gasket. because of the location of the leak, we were told that the most cost effective repair is to completely replace the engine, rather than incur the labor charges of totally disassembling the engine to repair this seal. the projected cost for this repair is $4,000.00 to $5,000.00. we feel this is a premature and catastrophic failure of a design component of the vehicle's engine. ford motor company, by direct communication, has offered no assistance in the repair of this problem, per their company policy. our contention is that this is a defect in design and workmanship on the part of ford motor company and warrants a recall for vehicles found to have this problem.

My cars computer (pcm) and four out of six coils burnt out due to faulty plugs i'm told. i was on the interstate when my cars engine just cut off and had to try and roll away from traffic without power steering. ford has known about this problem and hasn't made a recall yet. it is costing me over 2000 dollars to get fixed and i've been reading that it has happened to other people multiple times. i could have been seriously injured.

March 2011. i was driving down the highway and my vehicle acted like a hiccup or misfire. i thought it was a fluke, but it happened again a few miles later then all of the sudden, it started chugging really bad and eventually died. it was after midnight on a very low traveled area and i had my two year old in the car with me.. luckily it started back up and i was able to drive a few more miles (thank god) to a hotel for the night. if this would have happened 45 minutes earlier....i would have been an hour to the nearest town! not a great feeling with a toddler in the car, an unfamiliar road, and after business hours. come to find out it was the coil packs at first, so we replaced two of them like the mechanic suggested. then they called and said that didn't fix the problem and we now needed a new computer. not knowing any different, we replaced the computer. just last friday the same exact thing happened to me....so this would be six coil packs and two computers in a year.....not happy! we do not have the money to keep making repairs like this. not a huge ford fan at this point...and very sick to my stomach to read soooo many complaints about similar situations from others all across the country. there are a lot of hard working people out there who can't afford to have vehicle malfunctions like we're having. someone is going to get killed if they haven't already with this uncertain problem occuring! please do something!

The first issue i had with my car was in december of 2010. i immediately took my car to a repair place and they told me that the coils and the plugs were out and that they needed to be replaced. i assumed that this was just time to get this repaired because my car was right over the 100,000 mile mark. everything seemed fine until may of 2011 when the problem returned. this time i took my car to a ford service center. this time i noticed that my car would run ok up to about 35 mph and then after that speed it would start jerking. if i take my foot off the gas it stops, but if i leave my foot on the gas and continue to accelerate, the car shuts off completely. i havent taken my car anywhere that i have to drive over 45mph but recently i noticed that if i try to accelerate past 35, that instead of jerking to turn my car off, the harder i push the gas, it feels like i am pushing the brake with that same intensity when i havent even touched the brake. im afraid that while pushing the gas, the car is going to brake and that someone else is going to slam into the back of my car and hurt my 2 yr old son in his carseat in the back. i avoid driving this car unless i absolutely have to because it is dangerous. it seems that many other owners of the same car i have are having the same or a similar issue. this really needs to be checked into because ford is aware that this is a common issue but will do nothing about it. it seems like they are waiting for someone to get hurt before the assume responsibility.

In my 2005 ford escape xlt v6 3.0l on 11/16/11, i was driving east bound on i55 towards chicago at approximately 55 mph when the engine started bad misfiring and the completely died (no power or engine). with no power steering and no brakes, i attempted to steered toward the shoulder. i waited about 10 minutes and tried to restart and was unable. i had the vehicle towed to roesch ford 333 w grand ave bensenville, il 60106. i was advised by the service manager that the engine was misfiring on 4 of the 6 cylinders and that they would need to replace the pcm, 6 coils, 6 plugs and calibrate, total $2,114.21. i decided to do some research online and found numerous people experiencing the same problem. there are multiple tsb: tsb 05-11-1,tsb 09-02-06 tsb 09-02-06 and tsb 10-18-10. the problem is: the wrong spark plugs were installed at the factory. this combo of wrong plugs causes the coils to send emi/rfi back to the pcm (powertrain control module) burning out the pcm.emi/rfi is emitted from sparking device,in this case a set of bad spark plugs. this causes the vehicle to miss-fire, lose power, or in many cases, have total engine failure. wrong spark plugs/bad cop's/un-shielded pcm box/poorly engineered & un-tested, multi-changed, rare pcm and it's the $12.50 radio frequency interference device. multiple online complaints/problems: http://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/escape/2005/electrical/powertrain_control_module_pcm_failure.shtml http://www.fordforumsonline.com/forum/ford-escape/643-2005-ford-escape-pcm-ecm-computer-failure.html http://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=199403 repaired. then check engine light. now it needs 2 catalytic coverters $2,500 because of pcm/coil. total $4,500 numerous complaints extreme safety issue! please help! mike gibney 312-451-8585

I am a wedding photographer and while traveling about 4.5 hours away from home to shoot a wedding i had problems about 2 hours into my trip. i was on interstate 20 just outside of columbia, sc. i was in the left hand lane behind a semi truck, there was another semi truck in the right lane beside me and behind me i had a large van. i was going about 65-70 when suddenly, the car lost all power including the steering and all the warning lights blinked on. i somehow regained control of the car by shifting in neutral and restarting. i hate to think what would have happened had i not been able to react as fast as i did as the van behind me had to slam on his breaks to keep from hitting me. once the semi truck was cleared of the right lane i got over and turned on my flashers. since i had it running i was too scared to pull over on the side. i got to my nearest exit and pulled over. i turned off the vehicle and all the warning lights went off except the abs and the check engine light. i restarted and drove about a mile to a mechanic. they could not see anything wrong but heard the misfire. the car was towed to classic ford in columbia, sc. i had to rent a car to finish my trip as i couldn't let down a couple about to be married. i just got the estimate to the tune of over $2700.00. it's the pcm module along with coil, spark plugs and a few other things. i am now debating about weather to fix it or not as all the reviews i have read it seems like people continue to have problems after it's fixed. it sounds like ford really needs to figure out a way to fix this chronic problem before someone dies in an accident.

The problem is when driving 2005 ford escape the engine cuts out. when driving on interstate 5 at 60 mph the engine will shut off and then start back up. the theft light lights up when this happens. also, at any speeds the engine will cut out. example is when at stop sign at intersection or cross street, while in drive and proceeding across intersection the cars engine and all electrical will turn off. i will then have to shift car into neutral and restart car and then shift into drive and proceed across intersection hopefully without getting hit from other cars. this has happened with a car full of grandchildren on several occasions. the cars engine cut out happens at greater occurrences when driving up inclines.

In december 2010, my 2005 ford escape limited starting misfiring at 79,000 miles and the service emmissions system message came on. i took it to a ford dealership and they couldn't get the light to come back on or any error codes to appear. the next day, the misfiring happened again and the ford dealership diagnosed it as a bad prc computer. ford replaced the main computer, under warranty, at about 79,900 miles. the misfire went away for about 3 weeks and then reoccured at 82,000 miles. this time, the car dramatically lost power, will not properly shift into gear, shakes when idling and maxes out at about 30 mph on any hill. the service emmissions message and check engine light are constantly on. i took it to the same ford dealership and they stated the coil packs are all misfiring and causing the main computer to fry. they stated that all 6 coils need replaced at a cost of $900, and the main computer also needs replaced again. the computer replacement will be free, because it was just replaced 3 weeks ago when the part was still covered under an 80,000 mile warranty. the regular cost to replace the computer would have been around $950.

Vehicle fire on 2005 ford escape (vin [xxx]) on 3/23/2010, i noticed the vehicle suddenly (when driving) began to run rough. (like a spark plug had failed). we immediately pulled into a gas station and inspected the engine compartment (for broken belts and the like) no obvious issue was observed. when i started the vehicle again, i noticed the check engine light was on. immediately i drove the vehicle home and contacted a service garage. i was on my way to take the vehicle into service when i noticed an electrical smell. i pulled into the next gas station, opened the hood, and noticed a small fire located at the #1 cylinder coil pack. i used the gas station fire extinguisher to put out the fire. car was towed the rest of the way to the garage. car had been driven no more than 10 miles after first sign of failure. fire was small enough to not involve police or fire departments, so no fire or police report is available. no one was injured and no property damage occurred outside the vehicle. garage said that if i had limited the damage by extinguishing the fire when i did. garage replaced coil pack, wire pigtail (melted), and intake manifold (also melted by fire). old parts are available for inspection. car was repaired but check engine light came back on after 50 miles. care was immediately shut off and will be towed back to garage. failure code is p0351. (same coil that was replaced is showing bad again) car had approx 117,000 miles on it when fire took place. no other major service events in its lifetime. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

I have a 2005 ford escape xlt that has 46000 miles on it and i had both tone rings replaced and i think the one is bad again and it is only a year old. i only drive this vehicle on the paved roads and my short dirt road. i am not hard on the vehicle at all. the ford dealership replaced them for almost $400 parts/labor. the part is only $55 and the rest is labor. ridiculous! of course they are not covered by my warranty that came with the vehicle, which is a 6yr/75000. am i going to have to fork out this money every year, because these things break under normal driving conditions? i think the for company should have to pay to have them replaced, because apparently they are cheaply made and lots of people are having the same problem... the 1st one was replaced on 8/4/08 with 36735 miles and the second one was replaced on 1/8/09 with 40560 miles and i think one is bad again, because the abs light came on again and is flashing service brakes/4x4. apparently these things are defective. they replaced the abs sensing ring on the left and right axles..alot of good that did. *tr

About 6 weeks ago, my wife called me at work to report her 2005 escape made a funny noise when she tried to start it. when i got home that afternoon, i went to investigate it. when i put the key in and turned it on, it exploded. the intake manifold disentergrated and schrapnel from it severed wiring harness, knocked parts off etc. having 39k miles on it i had it towed to a local top rated mechanic. after the mechanic repaired the mechanical damage, he sent it to beach ford for a pcm issue. they replaced the pcm (under ford warranty, admitting that the computer was ?fried? and this has been a problem with other escapes) but absolves any knowledge or responsibility as to why the explosion occurred in the first place because a ?third party person? repaired the car before beach ford saw it. a ?mike? at ford customer service who based on conversations with beach ford, said that repairs by a third party precludes ford from any responsibility as to why the car exploded in the first place. my mechanic has done internet research and found other reports of pcm issues with the escapes causing problems from failures to explosions. a tech at the ford dealer said it has to do with stray voltage being induced into the wiring and going back up into the pcm, but then ford and the service director denied any knowldege of this. ford said the car is repaired (at my expense) and washed their hands of this situation leaving me with a car that has only 39,000 miles on it and exploded in my driveway causing sever damage, and no attempt to investigate why it happened. i have all the damaged parts that were replaced and told ford that. no one will address why it exploded in the first place. what if this happened at 55 mph vice in my driveway, or my wife was home and i opened the hood and had her start the car so i could listen for that noise she said? please help me out. *tr

My 2005 ford escape was missing bad. ford replaced cap and plug, then called me to say that was not the problem it was lack of maintenance and wants me to pay 400.00 to fix it. first of all, my husband used to work for ford dealership and he takes care of all maintenance for me. what good is a manufacturer warranty then? also it will be a week or more before i receive my vehicle back. all i have to say is this is ridiculous they will not give me a loaner car while mine is being fixed and my vehicle wasn't that bad until the dealership received it. i feel they messed up my car and i should not have to pay for it when i have a manufacturer warranty. *tr

I bought a used 2005 escape with 40k miles. it has been pampered and now had just over 50k on it. i went to start it on a cold morning and it would not start. after it warmed up i tried again and it fired, but not running on all cylinders. it turns out the ignition coils are prone to failure. this car is only 3 years old and i need to replace three of the six ignition coils? this car is out of warranty so i am responsible for the repair. the car kept stalling and had a top speed of around 30mph on the way to the dealership to diagnose the problem. i will never buy another ford product again. i am disgusted! *tr

I was driving on the interstate and my engine stalled. i took it to the local ford dealer and they indicate a loose battery cable was the cause. a few weeks later, the same thing happened on the interstate. the dealership is looking again and have called ford's engineering for advice, since they have yet to find the cause. this is a serious safety issue, especially if i cannot get to the emergency lane on the interstate. it does start again once i pull over. *ak

While out of town sunday july 10th 2011, 300 miles from home my 2005 ford escape caught on fire, od 90046. we got in the car started it up and then when looking at the map i looked up and smoke was pouring out from under the hood. as i jumped out the door came back and gouged my nose open. while bleeding all over the place i opened the hood and poured water over the fire. the car had caught on fire just under the rear side of the intake manifold. after extinguishing the fire, i called the local santa maria ford dealer, who only offered our service department will be open tomorrow. i had the vehicle towed to the dealer that day and while there decided to have my wife look at a new car. regardless of the fact that i put the flames out early and i as a maintenance officer with 24 years experience i could have fixed the car, i wanted my wife to have a new car so when i leave her behind for my next duty station in the marine corps and deploy, i would not have any worries. the sales experience was what i expected but my biggest issues were that, although the service department was closed, out of luck, yea right, the service manager stopped by to work on his rv and assisted in the appraisal of my 2005 escape then left before i knew he was there. due to the ford defect, fire damage, they offered my $2,000 for a trade in. i talked them into around $4,200. i had a car that cost me $28,000 six years ago and due to a defect i got around $4,200 for it in great shape, except the very small fire damage> luckily we had the fire in a parking lot not while on a back road, off road, traffic jam. from research earlier escape models have a history of engine fires, and some of the later, but nothing to date on the 2005. ford corporate has yet to contact me about my complaint, i am asking them to acknowledge the problem and hope they would compensate me for the lost value in my trade in due to some type of obvious defect in their product. case # 0389141921

I started my car at work and left to go pick up my daughter, i wasn't driving hard or fast just going slow, and all of a sudden i heard a large explosion, i had to pull my car over because it had become loud and unable to drive. i opened the hood and found that a spark plug had shot out of the hole in the head of my car. the spark plug had actually dented the hood of my car when it shot out. my car has been very very well maintained. this has never hapened before. this is an unsafe and scary experience. they say that it could cost $3500 to $4000 to fix by replacing the head because the threads stripped and ford knows this is a problem. ford needs to fix this, before someone does get hurt!

While driving our 2005 ford escape, we were on the highway, in the acceleration lane, traveling approximately 45 miles an hour accelerating up to 55, the vehicle suddenly shuttered, and then died, the check engine, overdrive, abs, and airbag lights illuminated on the console. i had to hit the hazard lights and put the vehicle into neutral narrowly avoiding being hit by a tractor trailer truck. i was able to maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder. i attempted to restart the vehicle and while it restarted it was misfiring and check engine light was on. the vehicle was unable to move under its own power. we were on the side of a highway with our 4 year old daughter in the car during morning rush hour. thankfully we were not hit and killed by this ford engine failure.

Over the past year, my vehicle would occasionally shake, stutter, and hesitate upon acceleration. each time this happened and i immediately brought it to be serviced by the dealership, it required a new coil pack and spark plug. depending on which one of 6 failed, the cost for repair varied greatly. i was told that it's not worth replacing all 6 at once, to wait until each individual one showed signs of having an issue or needing replacement. then, one day, i am driving on the highway at the posted speed of 65 miles per hour, when i noticed the car didn't have as much pep or pick-up as usual. as i was exiting from the left lane onto an on-ramp for a toll, the car completely died. with no warning, no indications, no stuttering as described above, no lights on the dashboard, nothing - it just died. this required all 6 coils and plugs to be replaced (including the 3 new within the past year) in addition to the pcm (power control module). i am told one of the coils/plugs failed, sent out a radio frequency, and caused damage to the entire system. *tr

New 2005 ford escape has numerous issues that are not being addressed by multiple dealer shops: - intermittent stalling, similar to problem causing recall of 2001 - 2003 escapes. car will suddenly lose power, resulting in loss of power sterring and brakes. dealer cannot reproduce, so will do nothing about it. - gasoline smell and loud knocking from engine in hot temperatures. - extremely low gas mileage, almost 50% below advertised mileage. these complaints appear in other reports as well, so this is not isolated. ford is doing its best not to address any of these issues and telling people to just deal with it. *nm

Two times when i was driving under slow conditions (in parking lots) the engine on 2005 ford escape xlt lurched forward accelatorating on it's own. the first time i had just released the brake as i was turning a corner in a bank parking lot. the engine immediately reved up high and the vehicle took off. i quickly applied the brakes which after a couple seconds seemed to knock the engine back down to a normal idle. the second time, again i was coasting in a parking lot, attempting to turn into a parking space, when the engine reved up high and the vehicle again took off. i slammed on the brakes and the engine returned to normal idle. but for the luck of no other vehicles or people around when the incidents happend, no accidents occured. i reported the problem and took the vehicle into the dealership service department but because the problem did not occur for the technician, no action was taken. i am reporting this, because i know the problem occurred, not once but twice and it is a very dangerous condition. *ak

Engine pings (pre-detonation) when outside temp is over 85 degrees and speed is over 40 mph. dealer says no codes are thrown but suggested the latest pcm reflash and injector cleaning at 44,800 miles might solve the problem. a $278 charge and no difference. no refund since they now tell me this is a maintenance item but the dealership also mentions they've seen a lot of these issues with the new e10 gas in the ozone non-attainment region. i explained i do not use e10 since the county in which i reside does not sell e10. they suggest trying different gas brands which doesn't help. after explaining i have another brand of vehicle with a similar size engine that does not ping, they state ford needs to do something about this issue. *nm

Oil leak from engine. gasket replaced.....oil leaked again. dealer said the crankshaft on the engine was out of specs....engine was replaced ( 2,741 miles ).since then numerous problems have arisen from an air vent tube hitting the fan belt to a loud noise and shaking of the engine that nearly caused a serious accident on the highway...trying to get to the breakdown lane. now the transmission ( left fron trans axel ) is leaking fluid. the only thing ford offers is an extended warrantee. this truck is a lemon. this car has been out of service 27 of the last 35 days. *ak

Nothing let up to the failure. car died while pulling out in traffic. was told it was the coil paks gone bad. replaced them. then told the calatlyic converter burn out when the coils went. come to find out this is a issue for is aware of on the 2005 escape. i was almost rear ended when this happened and has a hard time getting off the road. no indication it was going to stall. this is a safety issue on these cars. i have already put out close to $200.00 and its still not fixed. iit also has blown up my computer in the car. i was scared to death and very lucky that i was not hit. ford is aware of this problem and will do nothing about it. what will it take for some action to be taken? somebody getting killed before ford is made to do something with this issue.

While vacationing in myrtle beach, my 2005 ford esape ran sluggish and was missing after a heavy rain. had it towed to the local dealer where they told me that the casing for the pcm had leaked and water had gotten into the pcm and caused the malfunction. this problem also caused the plugs and coils to need replacing. parts were not available and had to wait two weeks for repairs. received a call from dealer saying that it was also necessary to replace the exhaust manifold and the catalytic converter. another 3 days and the total bill from the dealer was $5,262.38. along with a rental car for 1.5 weeks and two additional days in hotel made for an expensive holiday. called ford customer service when i returned home and they were not even interested in my situation. needless to say, i will never own another ford, and am now driving japanese.

While driving 50 mph without warning the vehicle shut off by itself.if it were not 5:30 in the morning i may have caused an accident or been killed. i was able to restart it, but the engine light came on and it ran very hard. it then gave me a service emissions warning. the mechanic states that all 6 spark plugs and 6 coils need replaced and that the computer system was fried (smv).furthermore, he stated that it was an error in manufacturing in regards to the spark plug installation. i now find that this is a common problem with the 2005 ford escapes but no recalls or notices have been made.
