2005 ford escape has a critical safety issue with the gas pedal completely locking up. sometimes tapping pedal will free it. as of 3/5/2013 i am not allowing my daughter to use this vehicle. this has been an ongoing problem. we have had the vehicle towed only to have the mechanic unable to identify the cause. from what i have seen on the web, this appears to be a very common issue. ford should be responsible for determining the cause and issue a recall asap, before someone is seriously injured or worse.

Our 2005 ford escape has a surging problem.when stopped at a light, every once in a while the engine will suddenly speed up.to keep it from moving forward you have to press hard on the brake pedal.a ford dealership wanted $85.00 to diagnose the problem.this is unacceptable for a safety problem. *tr

My car's gas pedal felt like it became stuck, almost feeling like the car was in neutral even though it was in drive. i was on a hill. then suddenly it sped off fast with a jolt. our mechanic said it needs a new throttle. after doing research on my car's make & model, it appears that this has been an ongoing concern. it's very dangerous. *tr

While traveling northbound on interstate 476 car suddenly lost power and would refuse to accelerate over 10 mph. luckily it was early on a sunday morning, and not high-traffic time, we successfully pulled the car over to the shoulder. our mechanic has been working on and researching the issue. turns out ford is aware and has issued a service bulletin that the computer is faulty, and affects the catalytic converters, spark plugs, and coils. a quick search on car complaints told us we were not the only ones, and it appears to be a time rather than mileage failure. while most are complaining about the minimum $2,000 fix, we are thankful it did not cause harm to us or anyone else. how many 2005 ford escapes are on the roads these days? *tr

The gas pedal is sticking. it won't depress. throttle body problem. *tr

Several times, the accelerator pedal would stick to the point that i could stand on it and it would not budge. it happens most frequently in colder weather but the temperature of the car has no effect. there is no real pattern to when it won't work. ford recommended replacing the throttle body, however after researching, the throttle body is not something that is normally replaced at this mileage. *tr

I was driving up to a stop light so i removed my foot from the gas and to the brake, before i could get to the red light it changed to green, i went to press on the gas and the pedal was stuck. it would not go down nothing. i coasted to the side of the busy highway kept trying to press it and it wouldn't go down. after about 5 mins of just sitting there i tried it again and it went down without a problem. this vehicle was recalled in the prior years for this exact issue 2004 and below. however my 2005 is not recalled. it is now at the ford dealership and i am waiting on a cost estimate. the vehcile did tend to do this from time to time only when its cold outside. i took it in several years ago to be repaird and when they test drove it, it woudn't stick for them so no issue was found for them to repair. *tr

Recurrent problem: the sudden inability to accelerate because the gas pedal won't budge. the throttle cable is binding somewhere. a couple of years ago the throttle cable snapped on our 2005 ford escape, breaking off behind the accelerator pedal inside the cabin. (we had taken the car in for this hard-to-press-gas-pedal problem when the car was very new, and at the time the dealership did not discover the cause and could not reproduce the problem.) after it snapped, the cable was replaced by the ford dealership at our (considerable) expense. now the gas pedal is once again refusing to budge several times on each drive, and we have to take the vehicle in again for inspection. the sudden inability to accelerate increases the likelihood of rear-end collisions. if the throttle cable binds as you're merging onto a highway, a high speed rear-end collision could occur. if you're unable to accelerate as you're crossing a road where cross traffic does not have to stop, you can be a sitting duck for a broadside collision. *tr

After starting the car, the gas pedal felt like it had a brick under it. it would not move. after the car warmed up, it worked again. during the last month, this has happened in traffic, forcing me to pull off the road since i could not accelerate, several times in very heavy traffic. while driving recently, on the highway, hours after beginning my trip, the accelerator became stuck, for 2 or 3 seconds, causing me great concern. now, every morning i have to wait about 15 minutes for the pedal to free itself in order to be able to drive the vehicle. it sticks off and on at least twice during the warm up period. i don't have exact dates, but this has happened several times during the last few months intermittently and has been very frightening when it happens in traffic. this happened to me a few years ago, a time or two, but the problem went away. now it is a daily occurrence. the cooler temperature seems to be a factor. i am reluctant to bring the vehicle to a ford dealer since i have read many postings from people who have been unsuccessful getting the problem corrected, even after spending a sizeable amount of money. additionally, i cant find any evidence that ford has any idea how to correct the problem. *tr

I own at 2005 ford escape. in 2007 and 2009 i had two incidents of being at a red light and when i pushed on the accelerator it felt hard to press and would not budge. i had to pull over and continually push on the accelerator and the car would finally go. this morning i had the same thing happen. the first two incidents resulted in my taking the car to the dealership and they replaced the throttle body stating that it was a defective part. after this most recent incident i am planning on taking the car to the dealership again. *tr

Driving down highway at aprox. 55 mph. theft light came on in vehicle and vehicle quickly decelerated. from the research that i gathered, this is a known problem to ford. faulty spark plugs were installed in some 2005 escapes. the spark plugs emit a radio frequency that cause the coils to basically fry your computer. ford has released a bulletin about this (tsb 09-2-6) but refuses to issue a recall. this is a huge safety issue, as decelerating on a major highway without brake lights has the potential to cause a terrible accident. contacted ford's corporate office and was offered no assistance. i would like to have my spark plugs at least checked at no charge. the cost, for only checking the spark plugs to see if they are the ones affected is $90. i believe that this should be a recall. ford is well aware of the problem but refuses to take any steps to fix this. *tr

On august 18th 2012 i was returning home from grocery shopping in downtown hamilton mt when our 2005 ford escape accelerated out of control and would not stop. i managed to dodge traffic and people and put it in park and hold my foot down on the brake but it kept speeding. it continued to race down the street about

Entering the interstate, i sped up to merge, but could not push accelerator pedal to even get out of overdrive. (making things worse, the merge was from the left.) pedal was full down. after dodging go home traffic, i limped to right hand lane and got off at next ford dealership. service rep and i looked at the depression made in the plastic housing to the steering column, where pedal hardware had indented it. service said engine appeared to be operating ok; he tested it by revving the engine in the garage. he remarked the visible symptom was the pedal being so low there's no room for travel. i continued on 150 miles back home and called ford to look at the speed control malfunction issue. vehicle appears to accelerate ok with cruise control; the pedal is sitting so low there's no travel to accelerate. this could have been seriously dangerous - merging in metro traffic is no game. *tr

While driving home from work, i went to accelerate. upon reaching 40. i heard a substantial backfire noise, and the engine shut off in the middle of a busy road causing me to block traffic as i coasted almost into a busy intersection. i was able to put it in neutral and restart the engine after coasting for 100+ feet. after which, the engine began running very rough and rugged never being able to accelerate about 30 mph and causing major traffic problems. i took it to a dealership (varsity ford in ann arbor, mi) and have been told that my 2005 ford escape was in trouble. apparently, my spark plug after being clogged, caused a backfire which blew my ignition coils and sparkplugs and my pcm. i am being quoted $2,200. at my last oil change (3 months ago) varsity ford told me i was getting close to needing a tune up but it was not necessary that day and that i could wait until my next oil change. i was planning on going this weekend because i was heading out of town. had i been told the risk was a $400 tune up vs. a $2,200 blown engine, maybe i would have changed the spark plugs. i'm very distraught at the ford dealership, and now am questioning whether i will ever buy a ford or work with a ford dealership. *tr

While driving on the expressway, my gas pedal snapped forward by itself and accelerated my car. then snapped back and hit my foot in the position it was already in. this has happened before, several times over the course of my ownership of this car. (i bought it new) i ignored it the first few times because i thought it was related to being on cruise control, but this was not always the case. i saw on fox news that there is an ongoing investigation; and called ford to see if they would repair my car and they said no. i am hoping they will have a recall, because i plan on keeping this car for awhile, and don't want to pay for the repairs. thanks. *tr

When the weather gets cold, the gas pedal sticks. this seems to only happen when the car is cold. you start out driving and all of a sudden the pedal won't move. you can't accelerate at all. the pedal is stuck. after a few minutes and the car warms up the pedal usually will start moving again. we have had mechanics look at it and they can't find any problems. however when they get the car it's usually warm. one mechanic thought it was related to the cruise control panel. this has been going on for years. i made sure there was no floor mat interfering too. luckily we have not been in a situation where it would cause a crash. when it happens, you have no choice but to sit on the side of the road and wait for the pedal to free itself. *tr

A few years ago, i started having problems with my gas pedal sticking. it seemed like a brick was underneath the pedal and no matter how hard i pushed it would not unstick. the problem lasted about a month and then went away. every once in a while, the pedal would stick slightly for just a second, but not anything that really concerned me. last week (3/7/2012), the pedal started sticking bad. it seems to be within the first 5 minutes of starting the car and can stick for 10-15 seconds, which is very scary when driving. i had to pull over a couple of times, just because i could no longer accelerate. now, i have started driving around the block for a few minutes until i don't feel the pedal stick anymore before i continue with my drive. the problem has been occurring almost daily for a week now. i can see how if i was turning left and my gas pedal sticks, i could easily get broad sided by an oncomging car. i don't feel comfortable driving the car anymore.

First time it happened in 2009, i was driving on the freeway in traffic when the traffic begain to accelerate, when i depressed my accelerator it was like pressing against a wall. my car was moving from the natural force from when i was braked but it would not accelerate, i had to steer my car to the shoulder and stop. when i stopped i made a phone to a friend of mine to tell them to come and get me because my car wasn't working. as i was waiting for them i decided to start my car and press the accelerator, when i did it worked so i went ahead and drove home. this happened approximately 3 more times that year but on these occassions once i would attempt to depress the accelerator as i was driving it would then work. i made a note to get it fixed but by this time it was the spring and it never happened again until winter 2011. i this point i had my neighbor look at it(who is a mechanic) and he said it was the throttle cable, he sprayed it with some wd40 and it seemed to work, well that was only for about 2 days, because it stuck again one morning on the way to work. at this point i took it to a mechanic to get the throttle cable fixed. unfortunately, at the time i took it in i wasn't able to recreate the problem. i explained the shop the problem and they too felt as though it may be the cable, i spent around $300 for the part and labor to have it replaced. well that was november of 2011 and it is now feb 2012 and it happened again this morning. as other's have reported i am thankful that as i was making the left turn that it was a protected left, due to the light, because that's when my accelerator failed. i had to pull over wait around 15min. and then it worked. just would like a straight answer to the fix. this car just got paid off in 2010 and i want to feel like it is an asset and not a liability to my family.

The first issue i had with my car was in december of 2010. i immediately took my car to a repair place and they told me that the coils and the plugs were out and that they needed to be replaced. i assumed that this was just time to get this repaired because my car was right over the 100,000 mile mark. everything seemed fine until may of 2011 when the problem returned. this time i took my car to a ford service center. this time i noticed that my car would run ok up to about 35 mph and then after that speed it would start jerking. if i take my foot off the gas it stops, but if i leave my foot on the gas and continue to accelerate, the car shuts off completely. i havent taken my car anywhere that i have to drive over 45mph but recently i noticed that if i try to accelerate past 35, that instead of jerking to turn my car off, the harder i push the gas, it feels like i am pushing the brake with that same intensity when i havent even touched the brake. im afraid that while pushing the gas, the car is going to brake and that someone else is going to slam into the back of my car and hurt my 2 yr old son in his carseat in the back. i avoid driving this car unless i absolutely have to because it is dangerous. it seems that many other owners of the same car i have are having the same or a similar issue. this really needs to be checked into because ford is aware that this is a common issue but will do nothing about it. it seems like they are waiting for someone to get hurt before the assume responsibility.

Accelerator gets stuck without warning. i was almost rear ended because i could not move at the stop light. i pressed the accelerator, stomped it, and it would not work. i could not press the accelerator and make it work. eventually it unfroze and i was able to move. this is very dangerous, it has done it at times when i was on the road and i couldn't move.

As with many reported, my gas pedal sticks more and more often - especially when the weather is cold (45 degrees or below). it will happen once or twice about 10 minutes into a drive and then not happen again. the dealership says nothing is wrong, but clearly something is. its been going on for years.

It feels like a brick is underneath the accelerator pedal. no matter how hard i push down, the pedal doesn't budge. then without reason the pedal works again. at first it would happen when i shift to third gear and i would be in the flow of traffic and not often, maybe once every 7-8 months. now it has occurred everyday once a day the last three days. one time backing up. the accelerator pedal will not engage.
10/10/200615000
The gas pedal intermittently sticks which causes sudden and quick deceleration. it feels like a brick is underneath the pedal. no matter how hard i push down, the pedal doesn't budge. then all of a sudden, the pedal will work again. it is a serious safety issue. i did some research on the internet and it looks like a lot of people have had this same issue with ford cars. some people have gotten into accidents because of it. i spoke with ford's corporate office and they said they didn't consider it a safety issue. they took my name and some other basic information, then spent most of the time trying to get me off of the phone. i tried to explain that this is very similar to the sudden acceleration problem that toyota was having, with the only two differences being the car decelerates as opposed to accelerates and that no one has been killed yet. ford told me if i was concerned, i should get my car fixed and that they would not pay for it. these vehicles need to be recalled before someone gets seriously injured or killed.

I live in virginia and friday morning got up and there was frost on the windshield. i got in the 2005 ford escape let it warm up for about 5 mins. drove approx 1 & 1/2 miles stopped at a stop sign to turn out on a main road and pressed the gas pedal and the vehicle would not move. i let it roll backwards to a safe place and turned it off. i tried it many times for over 30 minutes and it finally worked. this happens more often in cold weather but usually after 5 mins. it will work. this time was different and more scarey as i was attempting to pull out on to a main road.

The accelerator keeps getting stuck on my 2005 ford escape. i start it off, back up, put it in drive, press on the accelerator, and the accelerator won't move. i have to press on the accelerator really hard and then the truck takes off really fast and i have to fight with the wheel to gain control. my sister was also driving it on a cold day and all of a sudden the accelerator got stuck, the truck would no longer move, it finally started rolling down a hill and she almost crashed into a tree. she too had to fight the wheel to gain control of the car. *tr

I own a 2005 ford escape 4cyl. my gas pedal started getting hard to push down and was becoming a safety issue. i brought it to framingham, mass ford 1-6-10. it took until 1-22-10 for them to get a new throttle box to replace the defective one. did this take so long to get the throttle box because ford is experiencing numerous problems with this? if so, this should be a safety and recall issue the public should be aware of. is ford hiding this from public knowledge? i registered a safety product complaint with ford motors today 2-10-10. *tr

I recently purchased a 2005 ford escape from my cousin. as i was purchasing the vehicle he did explain to me how the pedal would stick on cold days. going into buying it from him i soon realized what he meant. he had taken it in to the ford dealership to get it fixed. they sprayed a cleaner on the throttle body to remove residue. when i heard of the toyota recall i called whoolwhine ford lincoln mercury here in ms where i live to see if my vehicle was also one. i was told that this was not the first time he had heard this and to spray stuff in the throttle body until it wouldn't let me anymore. well, i am very worried about this situation. as a mom with a small child, i worry about the majority of other people and families that my die from this malfunction. what it does is the pedal gets so hard to push until you can not get gas to the ignition to make the vehicle go. i have had this happen to me several times. i can even crank the escape long before my journey and it still sticks. well, yesterday was the worst day ever. i am a mom and a student in school. i had gotten to school and finished my class when it was time to leave. i got in the vehicle and started to leave oh boy the pedal worked. i got to the first intersection to where when it was my time to go the pedal was hard. i had to coast through it and pull over. finally got it soft again and went to the closest place to get a bite to eat. sat there for at least 5 min letting it run hoping it would fix the problem for that time. when i was leaving it was hard again and i had alot of vehicles behind me so i coasted to the nearest bank. it took 10 minutes for me, while i kept pushing on my gas pedal for nothing. it is so hard you cant make it go. so, in telling you this that is 3 times i could of had a crash. i take my daughter to school and some morning i pray all the way that i make it without anything harming her. it is bad when you end up coasting through an intersection. *tr

I have a 2005 ford escape (4wd), not the hybrid. i have approx. 63,000 mi on it now. three times since i've owned it the car has suddenly started accelerating on it's own. the last time was approx. the date below, and that was the only time i was using the cruise control. one time i was in town and luckily there wasn't anyone close in front of me. so far braking, or pressing the accelerator has reset it, but now seeing this problem with the toyota's i'm concerned. i e-mailed ford about the problem, however i kind of got the brush-off, and they just said if i was concerned i should take it to my dealer and have it checked. i know a check would cost me a large amount of money for an intermittent problem for which they won't find the problem. i just wonder if you've heard of anyone else having this problem? it now worries me that if i were nearing a crosswalk, with pedestrians crossing and it happened, i might hit someone. please advise. thank you for your time. *tr

Ford escape 2005 v6 2wd limited. the engine suddenly shuts off while driving. when this happens the theft light is flashing. this generates an error code. the condition is known to ford. they say it is related to a possible issue with a spark plug causing interference with the communication between the chip in the ignition key and the receiving unit. i have had this happen 4 times in one 300 mile drive. after having the error code cleared the problem has not repeated. i believe if this were to happen on a busy freeway lives could be lost. once the vehicle has confirmed the key is valid and the engine has started, the computer should not be allowed to disable the engine. braking and steering control are affected when this happens. *tw *tr

My 2005 ford escape's gas pedal is sticking. i will be sitting at an intersection, and suddenly when pressing the gas pedal it will not accelerate. it is as if there is a brick under the pedal and it's completely stuck. this has happened at numerous times when attempting to drive forward into an intersection or when pulling out into traffic, and has almost caused a severe accident. there have been numerous reports of this happening to ford escapes, so please investigate further before there are any additional injuries or deaths. there needs to be a recall. *tr

I have a 2005 ford escape and was having problems with the gas pedal sticking. when pressing on the accelerator pedal, it would not move. i took my vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the throttle body. this part has been replaced three times. [12/20/06, 10/8/08 and 12/6/09] the part is evidently defective and causes a safety issue. i shouldn't have to pay for it to get fixed every time. they need to issue a recall. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. while driving between 25-55 mph, the throttle will stick and the contact must wiggle the pedal to get it loose. the dealer stated that carbon builds up in the throttle body and causes it to stick. the contact believes that a crash could occur due to the high acceleration. the current and failure mileages were 35,000.

The accelerator sticks when revving the engine while letting out the clutch. after exerting an increasing amount of pedal pressure, it suddenly unsticks, and the engine overrevs. this results in a jack rabbit start. the ford dealer said that only fix is to replace the throttle body assembly, which is not covered by the warranty. i believe this is a safety issue and is a good candidate for a recall. *tr

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL - ACCELERATOR PEDAL
01/18/201083000
Tl*the contact owns a 2005 ford escape. since the vehicle was purchased he noticed that the vehicle would not accelerate normally. the pedal was difficult to engage which also made it difficult to accelerate, he thought it was due to the cold weather until he experienced the failure while he was in traffic. several times the accelerator pedal became hard to engage and forced him to pump the pedal in order for the vehicle to accelerate in traffic. the dealers estimated cost to diagnose and repair the failure was $800.00. the vehicle will be repaired. the failure mileage was 82,500 and the current mileage was 83,300.

The gas pedal sticks when its cold out, first i thought there was water frozen after my feet was wet from the snow. second i thought the heat from the heater dried out the movement of the gas pedal. so i sprayed wd40 on it didn't help, next thought it was the cable out in the engine, i sprayed the cable and linkage didn't help. finally it warmed up and the sticking of the gas pedal went away (2008) now in 2009 the same thing after the car warms up its ok, not sure if something is binding or what. *tr

 1. the past three winters my vehicle has grown worse with the gas pedal sticking in the cold / rainy months. 2. it occurs during the cold / rainy months 3. i have not taken it to a dealership. based on the research i have conducted i am showing quite a deal of many people who own the 2005 ford escape are having this identical issue -- this is a huge safety concern and i feel if not recalled someone is going to become seriously injured if not die from this. i am having my vehicle looked at for in the past two days alone i have almost had five accidents as the gas pedal sticks during the first 20 minutes or so of warming up. *tr

On 9-9-08 i was in a front end collision, approximately 40mph, airbag did deploy, however the powder that came out with the airbag made my face and eyes burn. my 2005 ford escape 4cyl. sustained minimal damage ($5000.00). it took 3 weeks to fix, which was no big deal. yesterday, 10-4-08, while driving home from work, my escape was running fine until i turned and started to accelerate to get up to speed (40mph), my escape took the pedal from my foot and locked it to the floor, i have been asked by several people if i accidentally hit the cruise, and all i reply with is it doesn't have cruise! as my car started to speed up i tried to stop, my brakes would only kick back out at me and since i was just in a wreck i was a little scared. i turned into a parking lot and drove in circles until i could figure out how to stop it. i tried my ebrake but it didn't work, i tried pulling the pedal up, no good, i tried punching the pedal with my foot, no good. i didn't want to do any damage to the tranny so i didn't take it out of gear, finally i decided to try shutting it off, it shut off and is running fine now. i am certain that this is a huge problem mainly because i have read all of the postings for this car and found that many people are having problems in this area. you can be certain that if this happens again and there isn't anything done to fix it, i will get rid of it and stop buying fords all together. i am very disappointed that no real action has been taken with so many of these complaints. *tr

Have read on your site numerous complaints with the ford 2005 escape engine and the problem that it speeds up during braking. i have also experienced this problem. however the problem is the driver !! if you are large person or have large feet. during braking the brake pedal goes lower than the gas pedal and your shoe toe catches the gas pedal and accelerates the engine, this has happened numerous times. the gas pedal has very little resistance and you are not aware that your shoe is pushing it down. it appears also that the pedals are closer together than normal. i have other vehicles and have had many cars and this is the first i have experienced this dangerous condition. *nm

Cruise control would take over without warning and without the switch being depressed. the engine would accelerate. at times the cruise control would drop out for no apparent reason. the cruise control could be engaged by merely sliding the thumb across the switch without depressing it. vehicle was taken to galpin ford in dewey, az for repair. the problem was explained to the service department. the vehicle was returned without repair. the service rep said they had taken the vehicle for a test drive and found no problem. when i got home i read the invoice in detail and found a notation from the mechanic that stated the switch needed replaced. i visited the service manager of the parent dealership, galpin ford of prescott, az and indicated my displeasure with a dangerous problem not being corrected. he stated the defect had not been recalled yet but promised if it did get recalled in the future, they would reimburse the cost of the repair. the switch was replaced 1/15/08 at a cost of $69.34 parts and 133.58 labor. *tr
