In a letter dated august 30, 2012, the north carolina consumers council (nccc) petitioned the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) to initiate a defect investigation of alleged electronic throttle body failures resulting in engine stall or surge while driving in model year (my) 2005 through 2012 ford escape vehicles. as supporting evidence, the petitioner cites two recent complaints of stall while driving in my 2009 ford escape vehicles that were diagnosed as failed throttle bodies with diagnostic trouble codes p2111, throttle body stuck open, and p2222, throttle body stuck closed.the petitioner indicates that the owners of both vehicles reported experiencing repeated incidents of stalling and engine surging. in addition, the petitioner states that ford has released a number of technical service bulletins that cover a wide range of vehicles and throttle body issues related to hesitation and stalling, including 08-18-2 and 09-23-5.a copy of the petition will be placed in the public file.the petition will be evaluated for a grant or deny decision.

We took our 2007 ford escape (aprox 60,000 miles) on a road trip from omaha ne to st. louis mo on 3/10/13 and arrived with no issues. on our return trip we drove about 100 miles until the car stopped on the interstate. the vehicle completely shut down and all of the warning lights came on at the same time. we were able to coast to the shoulder safely but were unable to restart the vehicle. we had aaa tow the vehicle about 30 miles to the closest town and aaa approved mechanic. when the mechanic looked at the vehicle they determined that the vehicle had burned through all of the oil and was completely empty causing the engine to seize up. there were no warning lights indicating low oil up until this point. i had recently had my oil changed about 8 week and less than 1000 miles prior to this incident and there were no leaks so it seems very improbably that the vehicle would have used 4 qrts of oil in that time. i contacted ford and the vehicle is just out of the warranty period and they are unwilling to assist. in my research it appears that this may be a common occurrence on this vehicle at about 60-70k miles and may warrant additional research. i am currently attempting to get my vehicle transported the 350 miles home to get a second opinion and repaired. the current estimates i received for repair are between $3,500-6,000. http://www.carcomplaints.com/ford/escape/2007/engine/engine_failure.shtml

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the engine began to knock and the vehicle stalled without warning. the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the engine had seized due to no oil being in the vehicle. the mechanic stated that there was no sign of an oil leak. the contact was also informed that the engine would have to be replaced. the manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure and current mileage was 92,000.

Had been driving for 4 hours at 70 mph, got off interstate to use restroom and while exiting; when applying the brakes, the engine shut off. vehicle placed in park, restarted, placed in drive and again immediately the engine shut off. had to have it towed and i was 2 hours from home. ford dealer said it was computer and updated some things and it worked fine for 2 months. again on 10/13/12 was getting off exit near home and when applying brakes, the engine shut off. same thing. had to have it towed to ford dealer where i was told it was the torque converter locking up. after vehicle sat for a week; it is now drivable again but still needs to have this replaced and transmission too due to this problem. i don't have that money just lying around. after doing research, i discovered this is a common problem with this vehicle from prior years past but obviously ford has never fixed the problem. i have done regular maintenance on vehicle while i have owned it for the last 4 years, i have taken very good care of it. this is ridiculous; if ford knows this is an issue and actually sends out service bulletins on this very issue and tells dealers exactly how to fix it then they should pay for it. this is ridiculous. this vehicle is only 5 years old. please help. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 ford escape. while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. when the failure occurred, the steering column locked and prevented the contact from controlling the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they repaired the torque converter. the failure recurred several months later. the dealer is currently diagnosing the vehicle to determine the cause of the failure. all of the remedies to date have been insufficient in correcting the failure. the failure mileage was 21,731 and current mileage was 22,000. the transmission was jerking and shifting hard. when coming to a stop it made a sound like twisting metal and the brakes popped and jerked, when accelerating in a curve. there was no response from the vehicle when the accelerator was applied. the vehicle also pulled to the left. the consumer also stated the vehicle stalled while driving 70 mph. the overdrive light illuminated for no reason, the automatic door locks did not work properly, they would lock and unlock at will while the consumer was backing up. updated 02/05/09. *jb

I was driving and all of a sudden my 2007 ford escape starting making noise.. i pulled to a gas station where we found no oil in the truck. not at anytime did my oil light or even my engine come on... my engine is blown. now i am going to try to get my warranty to get it fixed.. that should be a fun experience

On 3/19/2011 i was driving my 2007 ford escape, pulled into a parking space, and it died. no dash board indicators (check engine or oil light) went on prior to this problem. i tried to start it, but it wouldn't turn over. it was towed to a local dealer wherein they indicated the engine had to be replaced, a $6,400.00 cost to me if my extended warranty wouldn't cover it. they want my oil change receipts, i only have a handful, i don't keep the receipts. if i don't give them 10-12 oil change receipts, the extended warranty won't cover a thing. before even looking at the engine, the dealer and ford company customer service blamed me for the problem. i've had two other cars in the last 20 years, both kept about 10 years each and never had an engine problem. thing of it is that i never had a problem with my car until i brought it in to the dealer approximately january 29, 2011, when they removed my whole front end to replace a ring toner flush my brakes and replace brake pads. i know my dash board indicators were working then because the abs light went on and i brought it in the following day. not sure if dismantling my front end had anything to do with the engine problem or not. if so, wouldn't the dealer be responsible?
