Could not get speed no faster than 35 to 45 miles, sounded as if it was stalling in neutral, sounded as if i was gunning the gas to make it go, but i wasn't. riding real rough at times with a rattling noise when slowing down getting ready to stop, sounded as if the axle or something was going to drop in the middle of the street. when turning either way or while riding straight forward, sounded as if the tires were rubbing against something, it also let out a gassy smell of fumes that was very dangerous to inhale. the fumes smell like the gas fumes you smell in your house, like the car was going to blow up anytime.....and they want you to patronize american made cars well i'm fed up, they need a recall on this malfunction (p t u) power transfer unit is what they diagnosed it to be, i had to pay quite a bit of money to get this fix, this could be unsafe, if this car was all together stop or the axle falls out in the middle of the highway. plus the stop engine light didn't even detect this, and it should have, i'm really fired up about this i tried to put my vin # at the top and it wouldn't let me.

When i was driving home, after stopping at a red light and starting to accelerate, my escape rumbled a bit, then was running fine. a few moments later, when i was about to go over train tracks, it suddenly stopped accelerating. thankfully i was able to coast over the tracks safety and off to the side of the road, but other then the slight jerking a little earlier, there were no warning signs. i tried to see if reverse would work, and that did not either. thankfully my vehicle was still under warranty-the entire transmission system had to be replaced. there was only about 21,500 miles on the vehicle! and i regularly get maintenance. i have been driving it for about 500 miles and everything seems okay (although my mpg seems to have gone down some). *tr

A piece in the shifter assembly is defective causing the key to get stuck in the ignition, and instead of ford replacing that one piece they suggest you replace the shifter assembly which is at least 400.00 vs maybe 50.00. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2007 ford escape. while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. when the failure occurred, the steering column locked and prevented the contact from controlling the vehicle. the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they repaired the torque converter. the failure recurred several months later. the dealer is currently diagnosing the vehicle to determine the cause of the failure. all of the remedies to date have been insufficient in correcting the failure. the failure mileage was 21,731 and current mileage was 22,000. the transmission was jerking and shifting hard. when coming to a stop it made a sound like twisting metal and the brakes popped and jerked, when accelerating in a curve. there was no response from the vehicle when the accelerator was applied. the vehicle also pulled to the left. the consumer also stated the vehicle stalled while driving 70 mph. the overdrive light illuminated for no reason, the automatic door locks did not work properly, they would lock and unlock at will while the consumer was backing up. updated 02/05/09. *jb

I was pulling out onto a main highway and my car jerked as i pressed on the accelerator and next thing i know i am in the middle of the highway and my car does not go forward, just stops and still running while two huge trucks are coming from both directions, thinking quickly, i thought the car may have reverse. well, thank god it did and reverse i went. i had to drive home in reverse and call chapman ford to come and pick it up. my vehicle is still there and they have to take out the whole transmission. i am very shaken and am too scared to get back into the car. i have never felt like this before and have always bought a ford for safety reasons, but this has made me feel very, very unsafe. *tr
