This is an update to previous incident. $10486901 having spent the previous ($900) to find the problem, customer took the vehicle to a ford dealership repair shop. they agreed with the other mechanics that the instrument cluster was defective, but said that they could not give anything in writing till i paid their diagnostic fee ($135) and saw for themselves. i agreed. now i have spent another ($1120) to replace the instrument cluster. i also have in writing from the ford dealership that the speed cannot be viewed while driving (it reads 0 mi/h) and is a safety issue. contact me for the next step.

I was stopped at a stop sign and went to take off and the gas pedal would not go down no matter how hard i pushed. this has happened periodically over the last two years when driving, however it would be for only just seconds. today it went on for approximately 5 minutes and i lifted the pedal up and moved the mat to make sure it was not stuck underneath. after 5 to 10 minutes of sitting at the stop sign, it started to work again. i was able to drive for another quarter of a mile and it again locked up and i couldn't push it down and the car came to a standstill in the middle of the road. fortunately no cars were coming. after another 5 minutes it started to work again and then worked fine as i drove 20 miles into work. upon leaving work, the pedal locked up briefly approximately a dozen times and the would unlock. this time i was in rush hour traffic and it was much more hazardous. today was extremely scared because the car came to a standstill with no power. if i had been on the freeway i would have caused an accident that could have resulted in major injuries.

My gas pedal sticks, especially when it's cold out. i've talked to ford about it and 3 other mechanics and no one knows why. i have a heated garage so it's not frozen. not sure what to do but is embarrassing and dangerous! *tr

Gas pedal sticks, especially in cold weather. have had to put car into neutral on more than 1 occasion due to pedal sticking at high speed. also sticks when accelerating at low speed, making acceleration almost impossible. *tr

When the vehicle is first started, it is impossible to press the accelerator and after a few moments, the accelerator will depress. there is no indication when the accelerator will be free and great care must be taken to avoid a sudden lunge forward. just allowing the vehicle to idle and warm up does not seem to make any difference. *tr

When the weather gets cold the gas pedal becomes stuck and will not depress. after repositioning foot, the pedal would depress. yesterday on 12/27/12 the pedal would not depress while driving, which almost caused an accident because i could not accelerate when needed. i took the car to the ford dealer and the issue was with the throttle body, which had to be replaced. this seems to be a dangerous issue and a recall should be issued. *tr

As the weather has been getting colder, i started to notice how difficult it was for me to accelerate. this incident has been occurring every morning. on wednesday i mentioned it to the ford service person and he said that it could be the body throttle. on thursday i noticed that the acceleration problem continued more frequently as i drove to work. upon internet searching i saw an article about your investigation and wanted to add my information. today i had the car serviced and the body throttle was replaced. with the weather getting colder and this part will mostly like will work hap hazardly, i feel that this is something that should be recalled by ford. how many fatal accidents and innocent people must become victims before safety procedures are implemented?  Transmission issue: starting revving high on 1st gear skipping 2nd to 3rd. slipping took it in and was told after a scan that it would have to be rebuilt. was told this also by ford as well as another 3rd party transmission place. all 3 of them admitted this is a very common issue. paid 3000 to rebuild the unit. i was 3,000 miles over my ford esp. ford refused to help me out at all. many forums also list this as a problem. *tr

I was driving my 2008 ford escape in a mall parking lot, and when i approach a stop sign the vehicle was extremely hard to stop. i had to use the full force of the brake all the way down to maintain the vehicle from surging/ crashing into cars in front of me. the engine was staying accelerated and would continue to climb in rpms even thou the gas pedal was not being pressed. i pulled off to the side away from other cars and put the car into parked. at this time the vehicle accelerated on its own to about 8000 rpms. the only way to stop the engine was to completely turn the car off with the key. upon turning on the vehicle again the problem did not continue. *tr

I was passing another vehicle - starting speed 40 mph - when the escape went into passing gear the gas pedal stuck to the floor. i kicked at the pedal and the brake pedal trying to get the cruise control to release the pedal. i did not have the cruise control operating at the time as i had just went through a 45 mph zone. i got my foot under the edge of the pedal and pulled it up. the car was up to 90 mph on a two lane highway at 10:30 p.m coming into a curve. i have contacted ford motor company and they told me that there are no recalls for the 2008 escape, but i know there are recalls for other years for this same problem. the ford dealer repair shop could not make the pedal stick and told me there is nothing wrong with the car. i want to make ford and your agency aware that the 2008 escape has the same pedal sticking problem as the older models. *tr

I had been traveling in a construction zone so i had my cruise control set somewhere near 35 or 40mph. the construction zone cleared up and i returned to normal speed but left the cruise control on. i accelerated on my own to about 70mph. a minute later the gas pedal left my foot and went to the floor accelerating the vehicle. once at about 80mph the pedal let go and slapped the bottom of my foot (which was still in the position it was in at doing 70mph. the gas pedal (on it's own) moved to the floor and slapped my foot about 6 times before i turned off the cruise control. and again, the cruise control speed was set at about 40mph. *tr

When driving the instrument cluster fails. all the dashboard lights come on, the speedometer/fuel gauge/etc move to 0 or the far left. looking online for ford instrument panel failure, there are hundreds of complaints about it. checked with the mechanic who says it is a common failure with ford. they have a bulletin about it but it will not construe a recall until a death or injury from a crash related to the defective equipment. this may also fall under a tort lawsuit.

2nd instance in less than one year of broken accelerator pedal cable clips in 2008 ford escape. the defect is known and is addressed in a ford tsb, number: tsb-09-21-9. this is an unacceptable problem that should not be repeated. the first instance occured while attempting to pass on the freeway. the failure of the clips resulted in a complete loss of power, which was only non-life threatening because the vehicle was in the right lane. today's instance occurred in a parking lot... after the car was sitting. no power was exerted on the pedal at the time of breakage. this is clearly a defect warranting recall and a more permanent and suitable repair fix. as i stated, this is the second instance in less than a year, so the original part replacement solution is not effective.

Important addendum to o.d.i. # 10407083: (june 16, 2011) tl* the contact owns a 2008 ford escape. the contact was driving approximately 25 mph when the vehicle suddenly accelerated to higher speeds. the contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a barrier before rolling over. the contact sustained minor scratches. the police were called and a report was filed. the vehicle was then towed to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was pending investigation. the manufacturer was not contacted. the failure and current mileages were approximately 31,000. *********the car had ongoing mechanical issues which were brought to the attention of our ford dealer: chief complaint was the gas pedal dropping to the floor by itself-had to be manually coaxed back up to normal operating height; the dealer checked at 1st complaint, said it was ok: at 2nd complaint of the same: they installed a new throttle cable & gas pedal. the car was in a roll over accident which totalled the car shortly after the visit to the mechanic. the car accelerated out of control by itself. ford has 2 other passenger vehicles on recall now for a similiar problem: throttle body issues leading to runaway acceleration (free style & free star)

2008 ford escape - 28,500 miles - problems with accelerator sticking. large amount of force required to break through the sticking point which in turn caused the vehicle accelerate faster than desired - especially in stop and go traffic. car was taken to the local ford dealership and they determined that it was the throttle body assembly and replaced it. thankfully, the car was still under warranty.

I have a 2008 ford escape 2008 that has been having issues with the accelerator pedal being difficult to press or getting stuck while driving. i reported the issue in march 2010 to the dealership but they could not get it to replicated so i was told no concern found. however recently i was driving my vehicle on 12/04/2010 which is my birthday and my vehicle accelerator pedal got stuck to to the ground of the vehicle while i was merging into traffic and almost had a major accident. i have gone to ford website and noted that this issue has been ongoing with this make and model vehicle, i have taken my car back to the dealership and am struggling with them to get the repair done at cost to ford. ford customer care states there is no recall on the throttle body which in my car and others like mine needs replacing. also i have seen on the official ford site where this problem has been sited by other customers and yet nothing has been done by the company or the government to ensure the safety of the consumer. the service manager at the dealership luckily my problem got that high up the chain to get recognized otherwise i would still be driving myself, family and loved ones in a defective car... for all the ford escape drivers with the year make and models of 2008 we need your help! the economy is in a recession and yet we are still being gourged by capitalist companies that won't do right by consumers...

08 ford escape, gas pedal will stick and when i try to depress it, it will not, it requires a large amount of force to break the pedal free, it causes my suv to accelerate at an unconrolled rate. this has been a continuing issue and has only gotten worse.

When driving our 2008 ford escape w/ 38,000 miles down the interestate at 65 mph, the gas pedal suddenly dropped to the floor and was lifeless. my 15 1/2 year old daughter was driving in the left lane and luckily she was able to avoid traffic and get to the only available shoulder on the right. it was a terrible situation that could have ended in disaster. the car is in the shop now and i can only anticipate that the ford dealership will not stand by this product and i will pay for the repair and towing expense.

My gas pedal just stopped working while i was driving 65 mph on a highway. it was flat on the floor - i could not even feel it with my foot. thankfully i was able to get it off the road safely since it was early in the morning with no other cars around - it could have caused a major accident. we had the car towed to the dealership, and they told us that the throttle cable had broken. they refused to cover any expense of fixing it or towing it because our warranty of 36,000 miles has expired. this is a 2008 vehicle with 67,000 miles on it - the gas pedal should not just stop working! i have reviewed other complaints and it appears that at least 4 others have filed complaints for the same problem for 2008 ford escapes. i am very disappointed in how ford is handling these issues.

My gas pedal on my 2008 escape was sticking in cold weather. it kept getting worse. i had too really push hard on it to free it up. if in gear it accelerated very fast or in neutral it revved engine very fast. i considered it unsafe so i took it in for repair. i had to replace the throttle assembly at my cost . are their any other complaints of this nature. ford dealer kept part. i under stand ford is replacing a lot of these. this is a very unsafe condition. *tr

Recently purchased a 2008 ford escape with 42000 miles. while driving on the expressway at 70mph i heard a loud snap, and the accelerator pedal fell to the floor. the vehicle was pulled to the side of the expressway and towed to a repair facility. upon inspection, it was found the accelerator cable had failed, with the cable itself snapping at a point approx. 1/8 inch from the end at the pedal. *tr

I was accelerating on a freeway on ramp and suddenly my gas pedal was not there - it was limp. i called for a tow and it is now at the dealer. they say the throttle body is sticking and the cable is broken. this happened right before rush hour and luckily i coasted to the side of the road out of the traffic when this happened or i could have easily been killed. *tr

My 2008 ford escape was purchased on december 31, 2007 on may 22, 2008, while traveling on the expressway the throttle cable snapped and the gas petal would not function. i was going 65 mph and this put me in a very dangerous position. the car immediately stopped accelerating and had to be pushed into the emergency lane. i was towed to the dealership. there i was told they did not know what the problem was. on august 13, 2008, i exited from the expressway, pulled into a parking lot and the throttle cable snapped again. i was unable to operate the vehicle and had to be towed to the dealership. again, i was told we do not know why this happened. i new cable was installed. on march 3, 2009, while driving 65 mph on the expressway the throttle cable snapped again. i was unable to accelerate and had to be towed. this was the most dangerous situation, i went from 65 mph to nothing during intense rush hour traffic. i had to be towed to the dealership and again was told we do not understand why this is happening. *tr
