In a letter dated august 30, 2012, the north carolina consumers council (nccc) petitioned the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) to initiate a defect investigation of alleged electronic throttle body failures resulting in engine stall or surge while driving in model year (my) 2005 through 2012 ford escape vehicles.on october 2, 2012 the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a defect petition dp12-006 to evaluate whether to grant or deny the petition. the petition is hereby granted on certain model years.the nccc letter cites two complaints of stall while driving in my 2009 ford escape vehicles that were diagnosed as failed throttle bodies with diagnostic trouble codes (dtc) p2111, throttle body stuck open, and p2112, throttle body stuck closed. the petitioner indicates that the owners of both vehicles reported experiencing repeated incidents of stalling and engine surging.according to ford, escape non-hybrid vehicles are equipped with electronic throttle body (etb) assemblies beginning with my 2009.vehicles manufactured between june 22, 2009 and october 15, 2009 may contain contaminated printed circuit boards (pcb) with plating variations. plating variations could lead to a lack of continuity in the throttle position sensor circuit where p2111 and/or other dtcs would be generated and stored.ford and its electronic throttle body supplier, delphi, modified the pcb manufacturing process and issued a technical service bulletin (tsb) 09-23-5.vehicles produced after october 15, 2009 incorporated etbs manufactured with a pcb process that resolved this condition.odi's analysis identified a total of 123 unique reports indicating allegations of reduced motive power or vehicle stall.depending on the condition of throttle control system malfunction, a driver may experience varying levels of reduced engine performance associated with three limp home modes.in two limp modes, reduced engine performance may maintain vehicle speeds above 20mph while the third is a limited limp home mode with engine speeds limited to approximately 900 rpm. allegations of stall appear to be related to the limited limp home mode.vehicles are not likely to unexpectedly stall as a result of this condition, but drivers may characterize the reduced functionality as a stall, even though their vehicle may still has motive capability.allegations of vehicle surge appear to be related to limp home mode operation.complaints alleging surge are most likely related to engine rpm fluctuations at low vehicle speeds or idle as the control system engages to prevent engine stall.in limited limp mode, rough-idle conditions may exist while the control system attempts to modulate engine rpms once the vehicle reaches a reduced speed to maintain approximately 900 rpm.separately, odi received 59 complaints alleging incidents of engine stall while driving in model year (my) 2010-2011 ford fusion vehicles.approximately 60 percent (36) of the incidents occurred at speeds of 40 miles per hour or more.eighty percent of complaints (47) were received beginning march 2012 and 14 complaints reported that the throttle body was replaced or dtcs associated with limp home modes. additionally, ford issued tsb 10-21-6 addressing dtcs associated with idle speed drops and limited limp home mode.the complaints show an apparent increasing trend.a preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency and potential safety consequences associated with the alleged defect.see additional information for the voqs associated with the opening of this investigation.

In a letter dated august 30, 2012, the north carolina consumers council (nccc) petitioned the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) to initiate a defect investigation of alleged electronic throttle body failures resulting in engine stall or surge while driving in model year (my) 2005 through 2012 ford escape vehicles. as supporting evidence, the petitioner cites two recent complaints of stall while driving in my 2009 ford escape vehicles that were diagnosed as failed throttle bodies with diagnostic trouble codes p2111, throttle body stuck open, and p2222, throttle body stuck closed.the petitioner indicates that the owners of both vehicles reported experiencing repeated incidents of stalling and engine surging. in addition, the petitioner states that ford has released a number of technical service bulletins that cover a wide range of vehicles and throttle body issues related to hesitation and stalling, including 08-18-2 and 09-23-5.a copy of the petition will be placed in the public file.the petition will be evaluated for a grant or deny decision.

I started having problems with my car shutting down in feb 2012. after 2 throttle body's and still problems the dealer put a flight recorder on my car. this recorded 5 episodes of engine failure. they found that a sensor to the main computer was bad and replaced it. they left the recorder on and today 3/12/13 the car stopped twice and i pressed the recorder button. the car seizes, the engine revs when standing still and hesitates upon pick up. this has gone on long enough. ford doesn't know what to do about this problem and it is hazardous to my health. one day my luck may not be good as to who is behind me when it stalls. recall! recall! recall! someone needs to do something about this!

I was running some errands and as i was on my way to the grocery store my 2009 ford escape shut down. i was almost in the middle of an intersection when it happened. it lasted for about 5 seconds before turning back on. i was able to pull into a parking lot and i shut off the engine then after a few moments i restarted it. luckily that has been the only time it has happened but i still worry about it doing the same thing again. at the time i was so shaken up that i went straight home because i did not want to get stranded. my suv just hit 100k so i was looking up any inspections it might need and came across other complaints of the same issue for the same year.

While accelerating at low speeds (15 - 20 mph), the vehicle suddenly began to shudder and lurch, with no increase in throttle or power despite flooring the gas pedal. yellow check engine / repair lights came on, vehicle would jerkingly continue to move forward at a speed of less than 5 mph. after conducting a search, it appears to be similar to the limp home mode throttle body problem reported by the north carolina consumers council. *tr

While driving approximately 55 on an interstate in middle of heavy traffic, my 2009 ford escape xlt 3.0l suddenly deaccelerated and went into limp mode. i carefully made it to the shoulder as speed dropped to about 5 miles an hour. while parked on the shoulder i noticed the warning light for the electronic throttle was lit. i shut off the engine and waited about 5 minutes. i restarted without incident. this is the 2nd time this has happened and it has been running rough as well.

My wife and i were driving home from supper at a restaurant. we were on a busy city street doing about 30 mph, when the car suddenly lost power and slowed to around 1 to 2 mph.we managed to ease the car home(around 2blocks) amid horns blowing and lights flashing from other drivers.the engine light had come on and showed a picture of a wrench.when i explained to the lady at the ford dealership the next day,she seemed to know right away that it would be a wrench showing ,which made me assume that they had had this problem before.....bill for repairs was $545.00

I recently read in a newspaper about an engine probe for ford vehicles and would like to add that i have also experienced this problem with stalling and/or surging engine in my 2009 ford escape limited. i believe my car had experienced this limp home mode on the circuit board. on this particular day, i was driving in traffic and then all of a sudden i felt as though i could not accelerate the car at all. the rest of my trip home (approx. 25 miles) the car wouldn't let me surpass about 20mph. i was very scared but wanted to at least get the car closer to my home. i thought the car was done for. yet, after letting the car rest for about an hour at home, i started it back up and it drove fine. i just wanted to share this experience of yet another person who could contribute to experiencing a malfunctioning circuit board.

While driving, the vehicle lost power. when pressing on gas it just coasted. the wrench warning light came on. was able to get to side of the road, but almost got hit from behind. turned vehicle off, restarted and was back on the road. on other occasions there has been some surging. i see that there has been many complaints on this problem and it is getting some press that there is a defective part (throttle body). i contacted ford service and was told that they could look at it, but it is not under warranty. however, the wrench warning light indicate a power train issue, i was told it is not covered under the power train warranty. this does not make sense and it truly looks like a defective part. this is very unsafe and could result in a very bad accident in traffic. this needs to be a recall since they are aware of the issue.

Sudden surge and slow decline in speed. pulled over turned off car, restarted and it was ok. 4 months later same thing. i have had it in 3 times forthe same problem and was told it was a sensor. last time dec.2011 the mechanic told me to not fluctuate in speed since most occurances happened on expressway. the problem still exists and it is scary but pulling over and turning off car then restarting puts it back to normal. i cannot afford to any more useless repairs nor another car. there is no speed or weather condition that appears to cause the problem. it can happen at any time without warning.

Stalling when going on gas to pass another car or up a steep hill. after releasing gas pedal quickly, car wants to still accelerates for a good three to four seconds. also engine stalls out at low speeds when making a sharp turn, like into a parking space. was told by dealer the first two are normal and the third item they could not find anything wrong. *tr

Our 2009 ford escape is stalling and surging. the escape suddenly decelerates like it is stalling out, on other occasions it accelerates and revs the engine really high then drops back down.

Our 2009 ford escape is stalling and surging. the escape suddenly decelerates like it is stalling out, on other occasions it accelerates and revs the engine really high then drops back down.

While driving in medium traffic, the engine died and the check-engine-light appeared on the dash. i was able to pull to the side of the road and re-start the car. once back on the highway, the engine died again less than a quarter of a mile later. i started the car a second time and the engine once again died. by this time, traffic was beginning to back up behind me and i was entering an area where there was no shoulder to escape to if it happened again. i pulled off the highway and called for a tow. the local ford dealer said the throttle body had failed, they had recently replace a couple of others. cost of the repair was $400. ford said it was not covered under warranty. i retained the failed part and have it available for inspection.

This happened first on january 7 and again today jjnuary 10, 2013. the car suddenly stops. the yellow wrench warning light comes on and indicates throttle control problem. can turn car off and restart and drive normally. it was very scary as my wife was left in the dark in the middle of a busy street. it seems to be very intermiitent. i have read others reports of this and ford apparently is not taking action. this is very dangerous situation which many have reported. *tr

I was driving my vehicle in the center southbound lane on route 93 through the thomas p. o'neill tunnel in boston when all of a sudden, without any warning, my car stalled. the red engine light and oil light came on and the car began decelerating. there was a tremendous amount of traffic and i am unbelievably lucky to have avoided an accident. i guided the car to the right lane (there are no breakdown lanes in the tunnel). i turned the car off and restarted it and was able to continue my drive to my destination. i have read that there is an investigation into the throttle body on this vehicle. this is incredibly dangerous. *tr

Driving and wrench light came on at the same time that the vehicle lost power. this had happened previously on 11/25/12 and the dealer repair was replacing both vct solenoids and valve cover gaskets. both times when this had happened before i turned the engine off and restarted after 3-5 minutes. i was able to go another 6-8 miles and then the wrench light came back on. the second time, the check engine light came on and then seconds later 8 other lights were lit on the dash. i turned the engine off after coasting to the median of the highway (was in left lane with traffic at 55mph) and waited for a tow from the dealer. now the dealer is telling me this repair (replacement of throttle body) is not covered as the vehicle is more than 3 years old (actually, i've had it for 44 months). i want ford to pay for this repair as it seems rather common from what i'm seeing on-line.

My 2009 ford escape stalled (engine running but no forward motion and no response to accelerator) while driving. this happened while attempting to enter heavy traffic. i was almost rear-ended by oncoming vehicles. the problem was diagnosed as a problem with the throttle body by dealer. i had to pay to have the throttle body replaced. this is known defect, very similar to nhtsa action # dp12006: ...vehicles that were diagnosed as failed throttle bodies with diagnostic trouble codes p2111, throttle body stuck open, and p2222, throttle body stuck closed. the petitioner indicates that the owners of both vehicles reported experiencing repeated incidents of stalling... ford has released a number of technical service bulletins that cover a wide range of vehicles and throttle body issues related to hesitation and stalling, including 08-18-2 and 09-23-5. this is a serious safety issue. i contacted ford (both corporate and the dealership) and they have indicated that they will not take action to address this issue until a recall is initiated by the nhtsa. *tr

While driving down a the highway(with my two small children in the car), the car made an odd sound and then the gas pedal stopped working. my car did not just stop, it was still driving and i was able to pull off to the the side, but i could not give the car gas. once i pulled over and was at a complete stop with my foot on the break, the car continued to try and accelerate. i placed the car in park and it still continued. i had to completly turn the car off for it to stop moving.

In february 2012 (mileage approx 32900), i experienced jerking upon accelerating as my 2009 ford escape was changing gears. the dealer assessed it as a computer malfunction and reprogrammed the computer. my wife and i have had intermittent problems with jerking upon accelerating since. then, on 10/20/2012 (mileage approx 38000), the vehicle stalled when my wife was accelerating to enter traffic on the interstate highway. thankfully, she was able to get out of traffic without getting hit, and she and our 18 month old are ok. the dealership is replacing the throttle body. not only was acceleration a problem, the seals on the front axle broke and spilled axle fluid on the drivers side, so the dealer is refilling the axle fluid and replacing the seals. *tr

Shortly after entering highway on dark rainy evening, with no fore warning, car began to shake and lose power. was able to pull to side of highway. even though i was pressing on the gas, car would not go forward. wrench light was illuminated on the dashboard. called for assistance. when help arrived they suggested i turn off vehicle. when i turned back on, car was fine. the next day, with no warning, same thing occurs on neighborhood road. when we took to ford dealer today, the problem did not repeat so they have no repair code. this is a very dangerous situation....could lead to accident on highway...i have to drive 17 miles to work on highway and i am scared. *tr

I was driving on the interstate when i started to lose power and the throttle control/drivetrain light came on . i pulled to the berm and the engine felt like it was missing and it would not respond when i pressed the accelerator. i turned the vehicle off, waited and then turned it back on. the light was off and it ran okay. i continued to work with no further problems. on the way home from work the exact same thing occurred only traffic was much heavier on the interstate so getting to the berm was much more hazardous. i turned it off and then back on and it ran okay again. i contacted my local ford dealer and was able to schedule an appt for the next evening. the next day on the way to work the vehicle did the same thing as i pulled into an intersection. traffic was light so i was able to stop turn it off and then back on and it ran okay. i took it to the dealer that evening and they kept it so their service dept could analysis the problem. the next evening they contacted me and advised they could find nothing wrong with the vehicle. i picked it up and drove it to work and home the next day with no problem. the following day it occurred again and i contacted the dealer and they had me bring it in. i was approx. 15 miles from the dealership when i contacted them and the vehicle did the same thing 2 more times before i could get to the dealership, once in an intersection and once on the interstate. after they analyzed it again they advised me it was the throttle body actuator (code p2111 throttle body actuator stuck open forced to limit power) the vehicle has just over 37,500 miles on it so it is not covered by warranty. looking on the web and the nhtsa website this doesn't appear unique to my vehicle. since this occurs without any warning and has happened at very inopportune times this looks to be a safety concern. *tr

I was driving on the highway when the suv started to decelerate. i was traveling at 70mph. the rpm did not change when i pressed the gas pedal. the suv coasted to 0mph. i had to turn the car off for a few minutes. when i restarted it, it drove well enough to get to the ford dealership. diagnostics were run and i was told that it was a hiccup and nothing registered in the computer as an alert. i was told to return if it happened again but was told again that it was a hiccup. the following week, it happened again as i was leaving work. i drove to the ford dealership but this time i took video. i was told it was the throttle that needed to be replaced. possibly a sensor?? i'm not sure. because the suv was out of warranty and it was a saturday, ford didn't know if my extended warranty would cover the part. they cleaned the throttle, i think, and told me to come back on monday. i drove out into the road in front of the dealership and the throttle messed up again. the car decelerated. i turned it off, waited, turned it back on and drove back and paid for ford to install the part. the car still seems to want to decelerate at times but it doesn't and there are no warning alerts/lights. again, i do have video of what actually happened the 2nd time the suv's throttle messed up. *tr

Purchased used 2009 ford escape in august 2012. ran fine for the first month then started to hesitate when accelerating. we are now having repeated hesitation and engine surging. we are becoming concerned about pulling into traffic and having the engine stall. with only 44000 miles in it, ford will not pay for the repair because it is out of warranty. first ford purchased in 30 years, probably the last too.

Was driving in right lane approximately 45mph and i lost all acceleration. thought i had a flat or something. pulled over and into a parking lot. engine was idling rough so i turned it off and called my husband to see what was happening with the car. husband came and restarted, drove home no issue. on 8/11/12 driving to store the same thing happened but this time noticed the wrench light came on. the gas pedal stopped working loosing all engine power. pulled over and called my husband to see what happened. left car running, husband pressed gas pedal but engine stayed at rough idle. turned car off and restarted, drove car home and called servicing dealership for appointment. had the vehicle serviced on 8/10/12 to check transmission, thought that was the problem but they said everything was fine. they said they would let us know today 8/12/12 if vehicle should be towed in rather then driving it in due to safety reasons. *tr

I was sitting in the bank line with my foot on the brake, waiting to get to the drive-up atm when my car suddenly accelerated. i immediately applied the brake harder to stop the car from moving forward. this happened on two other occasions. when i mentioned it to my service specialist he said he checked the car and there were no problems indicated. i have a 2009 ford escape xlt v-6. *tr

Driving ford escape 2009 at consistent highway speed for approximately 20 minutes. iphone plugged into usb port, head lights, air conditioning on and working. sudden feeling of hesitation and then floating. orange wrech light appeared. sudden loss of rpm's and engine power. semi-truck behind me weaved into other lane. i activated hazard lights and coasted/changed lanes over 3 lanes of highway traffic to shoulder of expressway. stopped and parked car. wrench light remained on. air conditioning, music, and lights remained working. i looked up code in owner's manual and found powertrain service immediately. i turned off car. i turned off air conditioning, unplugged iphone, music, and lights. i restarted car. car immediately restarted with no warning light. with car in park, tested acceleration, no hesitation with rpms. i turned off car and waitied 5 minutes. i turned car back on, again no wrench light, no hesitation with rpm/gas pedal tested. i turned off hazards and attempted to drive. no further problem driving that night or the next day. on monday i took car to ford dealership for inspection. i was called and told that battery needed replacement. i explained i was concerned because there was no loss of auxillary power, rather engine power. the service representative stated they would replace battery at my agreement and continue testing. i was called later in day an notified that there was nothing wrong with my car. while waiting for call from dealer, i googled ford escape 2009 wrench light. i found multiple problems attributed to throttle body sticking, with inability of ford dealers able to identify this recurrent problem. my car remains at dealer. i called ford dealer again today and was told my car was fine to drive. i am concerned to drive this vehicle on any streeet/expressway with the potential for this to happen again, as reported by other drivers.

Intermittent problem when driving gas pedal seems to loose resistance, vehicle starts to slow even though adding more power, as vehicle slows and approaches 5 mph it starts transmission to seize and engine to backfire. then with car stopped it won't go. when restarted it won't go the first time but the second start wil then operate normally. has happened several times in a day at highway speed or in town. ford dealer unable to repair it so far had a minor leak in axle seal in front wheel drive repaired that no help. i believe it is a throttle body problem and have found this problem being suffered by many others on internet forums for repair advice/questions.

The day after purchasing my 2009 ford escape on 2/16/2012, the engine stalled while i was driving. i was slowing down to turn into a driveway, and the dash board lit up (engine, oil and other lights). i put the car and park and restarted it. i thought it was a random event. a week later it stalled again while traveling approx 60 miles per hour on a highway. i had slowed because the speed limit had decreased in that area. the dash lit up again and the car stalled. i again, put it in park and restarted the truck. the car was taken to the approved mechanic for the dealership and they could not find out why the vehicle stalled. the mech stated a code indicated problems with the gas cap but no reason for the stalling. the fuel assembly was replaced. the car has stalled approx three times since then. today, 4/23/12, i was traveling approx 40 mph and it stalled while in traffic. i was glad the person behind me stopped without rear ending me. approx 5 minutes later, as i was turning into my parking space at work, it stalled again. i repeated the usual ...shift to park and restart. this is very dangerous!!!

The traffic was light; i was driving on rt. 173 going east between hunt club rd and 41. as i passed over the bridge covering i-94, i let my foot off the gas to cruise which allowed traffic to merge and clear. the road changes from two lanes to one lane at this point. i was driving about 40-45 mph and i slowed down to about 30-35 mph. i was driving straight in the left lane. as i started to accelerate after traffic in front of me cleared, i stepped on the gas and there was no response. i repeated and looked down and saw that all the gauge lights were on. the steering was difficult and i applied the brakes slightly and realized that the engine was off. the engine stalled. there were no noises. the windows were open. the ac was off. i shifted the car in neutral and started the engine as the car coasted in a straight line. the engine re-started and i continued to drive to rt. 41. the engine stalled again 2/4/12 with mileage at 33,866. both times i informed the dealer who said there were no issues found.

This is to report a recent issue with my 2009 ford escape. i was driving 65 - 70 mph when suddenly my accelerator died. it is like losing the breaks but the opposite. pressing the accelerator does not do anything and you have to go on the side for emergency stop. this is a safety concern given that it is a possible cause of a crash with any vehicle around you at the time of suddenly losing your speed in a highway. the dash showed a wrench light, which tells me to bring the car to dealer. the dealer on the other hand will not fix it because they cannot find a service code from computer. it happened 4 times and i have to bring the car the 2nd time, then they replaced the throttle body even without getting a service code. so far no repeat of the problem. but i think ford should investigate this for recall issue and for safety reason since i see similar discussions from other customers in the web.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - ENGINE
11/10/20089501
This complaint applies to the 2009 escape hybrid model only. while changing oil in the vehicle, it was observed that the oil filler tube is located directly above the exhaust manifold (one of the hottest parts of the engine bay). i spilled a small amount of oil while refilling (2 tablespoons) and noticed it dropped onto the manifold, which has some creases and folds in it that can catch the oil and pool it. even though the engine had been off for a few minutes, it was still hot enough to start smoking slightly. after wiping up what oil i could with a rag, i restarted the engine and it began smoking again within 20 seconds. no doubt there would have been a fire in the engine bay within minutes had i not wiped up the pooled oil from the manifold. *tr
