While driving approximately 55 on an interstate in middle of heavy traffic, my 2009 ford escape xlt 3.0l suddenly deaccelerated and went into limp mode. i carefully made it to the shoulder as speed dropped to about 5 miles an hour. while parked on the shoulder i noticed the warning light for the electronic throttle was lit. i shut off the engine and waited about 5 minutes. i restarted without incident. this is the 2nd time this has happened and it has been running rough as well.

While driving on the highway the vehicle lost power and the wrench light came on. it wouldn't accelerate i was able to coast to the shoulder unharmed, but it was a morning commute and the highway was very busy i could have easily been hit. i turned the car off and it did start up again. this happened 2 more times in the same morning. i called the ford service department and immediately brought my car in per their instruction. after holding my car for 2 days and charging me $130 for service they told me there was nothing they could do because the wrench light doesn't hold codes. they knew when i dropped it off the only light that came on was no longer on when i brought the car in and they didn't warn me in advance that they weren't going be able to do anything without it happening while they had it. my vehicle at this time was under maintenance and power train warranty. so i took it home and this happened about 20 more times both on the highway and driving through town over about a 7 month period. this happened again 2 days ago 4 times on my way home from work on a very narrow road so it was very dangerous. this time the check engine light stayed on and i made another appointment with ford. i was told it had the codes for (throttle body stuck open/closed) they were able to replace the throttle body which i hope will fix this extremely dangerous problem. my car is still under powertrain warranty, but i was told that this part is not covered. so i paid full price for the part because my safety is more important, but this should really be recall. there were numerous times i could have been in a very serious accident.

While driving, the vehicle lost power. when pressing on gas it just coasted. the wrench warning light came on. was able to get to side of the road, but almost got hit from behind. turned vehicle off, restarted and was back on the road. on other occasions there has been some surging. i see that there has been many complaints on this problem and it is getting some press that there is a defective part (throttle body). i contacted ford service and was told that they could look at it, but it is not under warranty. however, the wrench warning light indicate a power train issue, i was told it is not covered under the power train warranty. this does not make sense and it truly looks like a defective part. this is very unsafe and could result in a very bad accident in traffic. this needs to be a recall since they are aware of the issue.

My first incident with my 2009 ford escape happened shortly after i bought it. after just starting my truck and driving a short distance, the truck would not accelerate but the rpm's were roaring to over 6000 and my truck finally shot out into traffic. luckily on a very busy street, no one was coming at the time. after that the truck had multiple incidents of not accelerating in traffic and a roaring and rapid rise in rpm's. i learned to immediately turn my car off (in the middle of the road) and then restart and it would usually work properly. it can be very scary. it would often slam into gear when this happened which i know was not good for my transmission. this happened intermittently so i knew it might be hard for a technician to replicate. when i took it to the dealer for 3 years they said everything was fine. when my warranty was up i went in and insisted that they fix my truck. they replaced a tie rod, fixed the sway bar linkage and said it was fine. it started making really loud noises a month later and i took it to my mechanic who again fixed the linkage. i called ford and they kept the truck for a couple weeks and did extensive transmission work. it has had 2 problem since but not as bad. i still worry about front end issues after 3 years of slamming into gear with the engine revving. i bought this vehicle(usually i leased my truck) because i was retiring and now i feel i must get rid of it because of anticipated mechanical trouble.

Our 2009 ford escape is stalling and surging. the escape suddenly decelerates like it is stalling out, on other occasions it accelerates and revs the engine really high then drops back down.

My ford escape 2009 keeps losing acceleration ability. the first time it happened i was only going 25 on a residential road so i was able to pull over easily. wrench light is on, i turn car off and restart and acceleration is fine. the next time i was pulling out of my driveway again turn car off wait turn car on and i'm fine next time heading home from work on a very busy street happened in the intersection had to get over limped into a quick trip turned off then back on works fine. but who is to say this won't happen when i am trying to turn against traffic i would be in a serious wreck. took it to the dealership the mechanic could not get a code off the computer. they are still trying but when a women (myself) mentions throttle body they try to say no that couldn't be it. *tr

2009 ford escape. consumer writes in regards to acceleration problems. *smd the consumer stated she was driving in the city, at 50 mph, when suddenly the vehicle failed to accelerate. her foot was all the way to the floor, but it would not accelerate. she also noticed two symbols, a gas and a wrench light, appeared on the left side of the dashboard. she was able to pull over, and turned the engine off. shortly after she turned the engine off and started it again, she was able to drive without any problem. she contacted the dealer, and was advised to monitor the situation. on december 21, 2012, as she was driving 40 mph in the city, the vehicle suddenly failed to accelerate again. at that time, only the symbol of the wrench appeared on the left side of the dashboard. the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for an inspection, only to be told, they could not find a problem.

My vehicle will be driving fine until suddenly the car losses the ability to accelerate and the wrench light appears and the engine shakes forcefully. at that time i power the vehicle off and restart it. when it restarts the engine shakes for like 30 seconds and then the car proceeds to drive normal until the next incident occurs. at the time i was driving on a busy road at about 50 miles per hour. this has happened on several occasions. i was on the highway driving 65 and it has happened. i have three kids and this is extremely dangerous. *tr

In february 2012 (mileage approx 32900), i experienced jerking upon accelerating as my 2009 ford escape was changing gears. the dealer assessed it as a computer malfunction and reprogrammed the computer. my wife and i have had intermittent problems with jerking upon accelerating since. then, on 10/20/2012 (mileage approx 38000), the vehicle stalled when my wife was accelerating to enter traffic on the interstate highway. thankfully, she was able to get out of traffic without getting hit, and she and our 18 month old are ok. the dealership is replacing the throttle body. not only was acceleration a problem, the seals on the front axle broke and spilled axle fluid on the drivers side, so the dealer is refilling the axle fluid and replacing the seals. *tr

I was driving on the interstate when i started to lose power and the throttle control/drivetrain light came on . i pulled to the berm and the engine felt like it was missing and it would not respond when i pressed the accelerator. i turned the vehicle off, waited and then turned it back on. the light was off and it ran okay. i continued to work with no further problems. on the way home from work the exact same thing occurred only traffic was much heavier on the interstate so getting to the berm was much more hazardous. i turned it off and then back on and it ran okay again. i contacted my local ford dealer and was able to schedule an appt for the next evening. the next day on the way to work the vehicle did the same thing as i pulled into an intersection. traffic was light so i was able to stop turn it off and then back on and it ran okay. i took it to the dealer that evening and they kept it so their service dept could analysis the problem. the next evening they contacted me and advised they could find nothing wrong with the vehicle. i picked it up and drove it to work and home the next day with no problem. the following day it occurred again and i contacted the dealer and they had me bring it in. i was approx. 15 miles from the dealership when i contacted them and the vehicle did the same thing 2 more times before i could get to the dealership, once in an intersection and once on the interstate. after they analyzed it again they advised me it was the throttle body actuator (code p2111 throttle body actuator stuck open forced to limit power) the vehicle has just over 37,500 miles on it so it is not covered by warranty. looking on the web and the nhtsa website this doesn't appear unique to my vehicle. since this occurs without any warning and has happened at very inopportune times this looks to be a safety concern. *tr

Shortly after entering highway on dark rainy evening, with no fore warning, car began to shake and lose power. was able to pull to side of highway. even though i was pressing on the gas, car would not go forward. wrench light was illuminated on the dashboard. called for assistance. when help arrived they suggested i turn off vehicle. when i turned back on, car was fine. the next day, with no warning, same thing occurs on neighborhood road. when we took to ford dealer today, the problem did not repeat so they have no repair code. this is a very dangerous situation....could lead to accident on highway...i have to drive 17 miles to work on highway and i am scared. *tr

We were driving our escape back from the store and all of the sudden it lost power and the throttle did not respond, this happened several times over the next few days. we took it to the shop and found out the throttle body was bad, there is no reason the throttle body should fail at all much less in a newer model car with low mileage. had we been pulling out on to a road we could have been involved in an accident! i don't think ours is an isolated indecent from what i have read online. *tr

Had just come over the tn river bridge on i40 east in tn and was approaching mile marker 137 when the vehicle became non responsive to throttle with no dash indication lights. at first i thought fuel pump shut down because acceleration did not work. i knew the engine was still running by rpm and power steering worked. the vehicle was coasting in the left lane and there was traffic behind, in front and in right lane. i turned on hazard lights in hopes of warning the traffic around me. the semi behind me had to slow also and i could not change lanes at moment. contemplating going left into the median and maybe striking an upcoming bridge rail or wait for open right lane and get to right side of interstate. i had an opening and turned off hazard flasher and then gave a right blinker, cutting off the semi behind who was trying to go around me. at that moment i thought we would get hit. pulled over and the wrench light came on and no check engine light. vehicle idled bad like a misfire and rpm gauge went up and down unsteadily. i videoed the fluctuation while pulled over. turned car off and restarted no problem. problem came back again 74 miles later in nashville at 88756 miles. at that point on i440e and i65 split the vehicle, without warning, shutdown again, became non responsive to throttle. then the wrench light and check engine light came on and i pulled over videoed the fluctuating gauges. turned vehicle off and restarted and lights went off and proceeded to crown ford on thompson lane and the service dept was closed. this issue also happened 5 times on 9-3-2012, between mileage 89,9002 to 89,1181, while in alabama/tn. example going uphill, and also coasting into someones driveway at night . this vehicle still currently has the trans flare issue even after two pcm reflash. but ford cant get it to act up. i thought maybe this issue was related. *tr

I was driving when all of a sudden the car shook slightly and then there was no more power from pushing the gas pedal and the powertrain warning symbol came on (picture of a wrench) and i was just coasting; i pulled off the road and put in park, when i put it back in drive, again nothing happened when i stepped on the gas, it would just coast. i finally turned off the ignition, waited a minute and turned it back on, and it worked and there was no warning symbol on. i saw on internet later that several people have had the same issue. i took to the dealer the next morning, he mentioned possibly the throttle body but then after they checked it, they said nothing indicated a problem, and the computer did not even indicate that warning light had been on, so there was nothing they could do. there is even a video on youtube about someone having this issue. i am scared it will happen again. *tr

While driving at a constant speed the throttle control actuator inside the throttle body can become stuck and cause the driver to loose all throttle and speed control. problem will present itself as a transmission issue as shifting through all the gears will not clear the problem, until engine is powered down and restarted. this is a clear and evident problem that appears at or around 75,000 miles. ford refuses to acknowledge that this is a problem with the factory model throttle body installed in most escape model vehicles. regular engine diagnostics do not display an error code unless the diagnostic computer is connected to the car at the time of incident and warning light is on. *tr

I have owned 2009 ford escape limited v-6 less than two months. while driving 35-40 mph the vehicle suddenly would not accelerate. it did not stop running so i was able to exit the roadway and return home. it took several minutes for it to return to normal. i did not get a check engine light or other warning. dealer advises i should wait to see if it happens again as it would be difficult to diagnose at this point. at the time of the incident i was on my way to interstate highway with 70 mph speed limit and a lot of heavy truck traffic. i feel fortunate incident happened when and where it did. *tr

Driving ford escape 2009 at consistent highway speed for approximately 20 minutes. iphone plugged into usb port, head lights, air conditioning on and working. sudden feeling of hesitation and then floating. orange wrech light appeared. sudden loss of rpm's and engine power. semi-truck behind me weaved into other lane. i activated hazard lights and coasted/changed lanes over 3 lanes of highway traffic to shoulder of expressway. stopped and parked car. wrench light remained on. air conditioning, music, and lights remained working. i looked up code in owner's manual and found powertrain service immediately. i turned off car. i turned off air conditioning, unplugged iphone, music, and lights. i restarted car. car immediately restarted with no warning light. with car in park, tested acceleration, no hesitation with rpms. i turned off car and waitied 5 minutes. i turned car back on, again no wrench light, no hesitation with rpm/gas pedal tested. i turned off hazards and attempted to drive. no further problem driving that night or the next day. on monday i took car to ford dealership for inspection. i was called and told that battery needed replacement. i explained i was concerned because there was no loss of auxillary power, rather engine power. the service representative stated they would replace battery at my agreement and continue testing. i was called later in day an notified that there was nothing wrong with my car. while waiting for call from dealer, i googled ford escape 2009 wrench light. i found multiple problems attributed to throttle body sticking, with inability of ford dealers able to identify this recurrent problem. my car remains at dealer. i called ford dealer again today and was told my car was fine to drive. i am concerned to drive this vehicle on any streeet/expressway with the potential for this to happen again, as reported by other drivers.

Intermittent problem when driving gas pedal seems to loose resistance, vehicle starts to slow even though adding more power, as vehicle slows and approaches 5 mph it starts transmission to seize and engine to backfire. then with car stopped it won't go. when restarted it won't go the first time but the second start wil then operate normally. has happened several times in a day at highway speed or in town. ford dealer unable to repair it so far had a minor leak in axle seal in front wheel drive repaired that no help. i believe it is a throttle body problem and have found this problem being suffered by many others on internet forums for repair advice/questions.

Transmission is loud. shifts are harsh. significant hesitation when accelerating. transmission hunts for gears. upshifts and downshifts are frequent. when passing vehicles on the highway, accelaration is delayed as transmission shifts up through gears, then drops to a low gear. powertrain light comes on the dash. to dealer for service. they say they cannot locate problem.

I was driving at 60 mph up the hill and was trying to pass a vehicle. i tried to increase the speed to 70 mph and there was sudden shift of gears; it went from high to low and then high again. i felt sudden jerk and the powertrain light came on. this thing happened once more after that incident. i took my vehicle to the dealer and it has been there for last 4 days. the latest i was informed is that, they will replace it. the reason i am writing this is that, this is not one sporadic issue. i know at least 2 persons who had the same issue with 2009 escapes. fortunately for me, the transmission did not die, but for them, it died on the freeways. not a very safe situation to be in. thanks for reading.

While being towed behind my motor home the transmission began smoking. when i stopped there was so much smoke coming from the vehicle i thought it was on fire and grabbed my fire extinguisher. i had the car hauled to the nearest dealer where a remanufactured transmission was installed at 8260 odometer miles. the second transmission failure occurred while being towed at 10834 odometer miles and after being towed approximately 1000 miles after the first failure. the dealer installed another remanufactured transmission. each repair took 2-3 weeks to complete. although ford maintains that the escape can be towed with all four wheels on the ground there are numerous catastrophic failures reported on the internet under ford escape transmission problems + towing which leads one to believe the vehicle can not be towed without great risk. this failure is not only an inconvenience but it is a financial problem for the consumer and a safety problem. depending upon where the failure occurs it might be very dangerous or impossible to pull over and wait for a tow truck. also, at some point the vehicle could conceivably catch fire which would present an even greater potential problem. there is at least one report of a fire on the nhtsa website. the transmission used in the escape is a 6f35 transmission which is also used in the mercury mariner, ford fusion and mazada tribute. so these vehicles may have the same problem if they are towed all four wheels down.

I purchased a 2009 ford escape in june of 2009. in february of 2010, i had issues with the transmission slipping and jerking while in transmission. i took the vehicle into the dealership, and was informed my transmission had failed, and they had informed me they had installed a brand new transmission. september 8th, 2010 my vehicle was experiencing the same symptoms with the brand new transmission that was replaced in march, at less than 30,000 miles currently on my odometer. took the vehicle to the dealership september 10th and they informed me on september 12th, that it is indeed transmission failure, and the transmission will more than likely need to be replaced. i am upset that this vehicle continues to have transmission concerns.

Purchased 2009 ford escape fwd v6 auto trans as a vehicle to be towed behind our motor home. we were assured it was towable (ford owners manual & dinghy towing guides published annually with auto mfr's input). we have blown 2 transmissions in past 4 months, and have more than followed ford's guidelines. i have read of several other rvers who have experienced up to 4 transmission failures - some reported being flagged down by other motorists because smoke was coming from the car while being towed. the wiring harness on ours has been melted both times trans failure occurred. ford refuses to acknowledge their mistake relative towability. ford has abused us (stranded for 2+weeks now with no idea when repairs will be completed) by their customer service policies. on the first trans failure they just told the dealer to replace the transmission - took 10 days. this time they are dragging their feet on ordering transmission replacement, and offering us no financial assistance for our inconvenience and out of pocket costs (rental car, etc). *tr

09 ford escape transmission lost third gear [6 speed auto] then goes into default mode [5th gear only] this is a very harsh event [it causes the tire to skid on dry pavement] ford replaced a pcm now the transmission spews oil out the dipstick tube and covers the back end gate and underside of vehicle [this is a fire hazard as exhaust temps are high] thus far the selling dealers service and warranty is a joke problems started at 2000 miles have 3000 now the truck spends more time at dealership than at our home we do not feel we can be safe with these issues going on. *tr

I was accelerating from a stoplight on a two lane road without a shoulder. a vehicle in my lane suddenly slammed on the breaks, so i let my foot off the accelerator to check the next lane to see if i could swerve over at which point i pressed on the accelerator to get in front of the car in the other lane but my vehicle was unresponsive. the rpms didn't change, after a couple seconds and the accelerator to the floor, it finally engaged into gear and jolted forward. i narrowly missed the stopped car. i have experienced these dead spots in acceleration after the mandatory tsb ford released. there have been five times in which it almost caused an accident and i try to avoid making any left handed turns against traffic. my vehicle has also been plagued with other transmission issues, such as slamming into gear, slipping gears, shift flares, harsh shifting and even the transmission being unresponsive and resulting in the vehicle jolting forward when off the accelerator.

2009 ford escape xlt v6 with automatic transmission. while driving the vehicle at highway speeds (50-70 mph) the transmission slips into neutral. this first occurred when the vehicle was 7 months old (jan 2010) it was taken to the dealership and the transmission was replaced, according to the service department at the dearship, with a brand new transmission. a couple of months later the same problem resurfaced and the vehicle was again taken to the dealership where it stayed for over a week. the service advisor informed us that there was a bad module in the transmission and that once it was replaced the problem would be solved. the vehicle came out of the dealership supposedly repaired, however, two days later the same exact problem happened with the transmission slipping into neutral when driving on the interstate. we live in washington dc and have to take the washington beltway and interstate 95 every day to get to work and this issue with the transmission is just a serious accident waiting to happen. this vehicle is not safe to operate!

After a recall that reprogrammed the powertrain control module my 2009 ford escape began to experience acceleration with out the gas pedal being pressed. the first incident occured on august 15th. the vehicle was brought in for service on august 20th. no issues or repariable items were found. the car continues to accelerate without the gas pedal being pressed. the vehicle will be brought back in for service. the vehical did not experience this problem prior to the reprogramming. when the acceleration occurs it feels like the cruise control is engaging even though the system was not on prior to acceleration.

Tl- the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the contact stated that while driving 70mph the transmission shifted gears and the rpm's went up to 6000, when it went back into gear there was a banging noise. transmission issues have been an ongoing issue with the vehicle. the first time it was in the shop the dealer informed the owner the vehicle needed a valve body. the repair was done but the transmission would still stick until it slammed itself into gear. on march 30, 2010, all of the gears in the transmission were replaced but the failure still persisted. on april 19, 2010 it was back at the dealer again for nine days and they informed the owner to drive the vehicle because the vehicle had to adapt to the owners style of driving. the failure persisted. the vehicle was back at the dealer on may 10, 2010 and the vehicle is still there, failure unresolved. the dealer stated they are waiting for ford to advise them. ford called back and stated they would send a field engineer to inspect the vehicle. the owner wants ford to buy the vehicle back but they are unwilling to do that. the failure mileage was approximately 5,184. the current mileage is 15,835. rd

While travelling at highway speed, transmission slips to neutral (or low gear) and rpms shoot up to near 6000. forward momentum slows dramatically which is quite hazardous on highway. got to dealership right away and within day they fixed it by replacing a seal (diagnosis was low fluid). expressed concerns for safety and was told it is fixed and it is safe. next day the exact same thing occurs! in addition to that same problem occuring, also now shifting is occassionally very hard especially when acceleration is harder like merging onto highway or passing another car. bringing vehicle back in but don't have my hopes up right now.

2009 ford escape purchased april 2009. noticed transmission was slipping out of gear when shifting into reverse to back out of driving. thought this may have been my error for not stepping on brake petal completely. march 2010, mileage about 20,000 started having problems with transmission when i accelerate at highway speeds. while pressing on the gas at highway speeds the transmission slips into neutral or starts jerking and will not accelerate and the engine revs up with no error lights coming on. called dealer to schedule an appointment, soonest they could get me in is march 22, 2010. when i was making the appointment the service representative tol me that the problem was probably low on tranny fluid. checked the tranny fluid when i had my oil changed on march 13, 2010 and it was low, service tech added more transmission fluid but the problem reappeared the same and is getting worse. the potential for an accident at highway speeds is quite possible if you are unable to accelerate when entering the on ramp and a semi truck is in the same lane. i've noticed other complaints addressing the same issue. definitely there seems to be a problem with the 2009 ford escape transmissions. i'll see what the dealer says and if they can fix the problem. more importantly, the service rep told me that there is no recall on this issue but she has been having alot of escapes coming in for the same problem. will update this complaint after my vehicle is looked at and diagnosed. i'll also do some research online to see if there is any other information available to me.

2009 ford escape transmission is slipping out of gear under acceleration at highway speeds. while pressing on the gas at highway speeds the transmission slips into neutral and the engine revs up to 5,000 to 6,000 rpms with no error lights coming on. dealer was advised of the problem and stated that it was low on tranny fluid. however, the problem reappeared two days later and is not fixed yet. the potential for an accident at highway speeds is quite possible.*tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2009 ford escape. the vehicle hesitates prior to accelerating. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the computer was reprogrammed. the repair did not remedy the failure. the failure mileage was 10,000 . the current mileage is 10,000. updated 1/4/10 *cn when decreasing speed for turns or nearing a light, and then accelerate, the vehicle didn't respond quick, it took a few seconds. the consumer change the grade of gas he was using and the problem improved a little. the dealer reprogrammed the pcm. the consumer stated he and the dealer discussed the possibility of a new transmission because of the acceleration problem as well as the fluid being black. updated 01/06/10. *jb

2009 ford escape 4wd automatic transmission. we experienced failure of transmission while towing the car per instructions in car information book. it was fixed by ford with no problem (we were told it was a defective transmission) took 12 days. reimbursed by extended warranty for out of pocket expenses. then we towed it 1000 miles per instructions on stopping etc. no problems. we had the oil changed by a ford dealer and they topped off the fluids. we towed the car 200 miles and the transmission blew it was towed again to a ford dealer fixed in 6 days this time and a new dipstick was given with instruction to never let anyone top off the fluid and to keep it between hash mark and low line. we have since towed it >9000 miles with no further problem. however everytime we had oil change or tire reputation, the service department did not know about their own service bulletin telling them not to top off fluid. we were also given new towing instructions regarding stopping every 6 hours and running the car for 5 minutes and putting it through all gears before towing again. however, i can't find those instruction anywhere. *tr
