The wrench icon illuminated the 4 times the escape failed to respond to acceleration. each time it needed to be turned off and restarted. 1st failure (1/24/13) was at about 20mph (or less) while making a u-turn. i was able to coast over to bus lane. 2nd failure (2/4/13) was at 50mph after traveling 30 miles in heavy traffic. i drove directly to a transmission shop and was told what an extreme safety issue this could be and that this was an expensive transmission to rebuild and it would be $2000 to $2500. 3rd failure (2/5/13) and by now i am quick to start emergency flashers. i was unable to restart in n. i was able to pull into a turn lane and had to turn escape off and restart. i started researching on internet and determined that the problem was the electronic throttle body. 4th failure (2/11/13) same senerio. 2/14/13 i drove to don reid ford, maitland, fl. i spoke to the service manager who agreed with me that the problem was the throttle body. $300 fix included $99. labor with a 12 month warranty at any ford dealer. that point sold me since this vehicle was likely to travel out of town, and that it could be done while i waited. i was not happy to check my paperwork after i got home and find that instead of stating the issue it said customer states replace throttle body per customer request i called the service manager and expressed my concern that this very dangerous safety issue was not documented on my paperwork. i was told that since the dealer did not diagnose the problem, which would have cost another $99 that this was the way it had to be written up. i believe that this sudden gas pedal failure could cause an accident and should be a recall before a death occurs. this 2010 was built 12/09. we bought this escape 10/3/12 with 73,600 miles on it. we have tested it out on a 200 mile trip and a 1,000 mile trip.now trust the 2010 escape.

I was driving on the interstate going approximately 73 mph, when the car started losing speed, the wrench light came on, and i wasn't able to accelerate. i had to maneuver the car off to the side of the road, cut it off and then restart. it seemed to be fine at that point. however, that same morning i had the same problem, only it was in my driveway. i turned the car off and restarted it and it seemed fine. this is terribly dangerous since it happens on the interstate and if you are in the middle of traffic and are unable to keep up the speed, it could cause an accident. i have read many complaints about this problem with different ford models and i believe there should be a recall for safety reasons.

I have two ford escapes and both have the same issue, the power train light comes on. there was a recall for same model but when i called ford they said it was not made in location where the recall happened. i have taken it to a few auto repairs show and they have told me that this a problem they see a lot. i have called the dealership and they say they can not do anything. i am furious that know i have to pay 6000 to replace the transmission for both my vehicles!

I was driving down the road and my car stalled and started jerking before shutting down entirely. i would push on the gas and my car would not drive forward, as if it lost its power. the ford dealership had to replace the throttle body, after i owned the car for less than a year. *tr

This vehicle belongs to my daughter and while driving to get lunch the said vehicle slowed and started jerking and shaking. the engine didn't die but the accelerator would not throttle up. she eventually was able to return back to work and later in the afternoon had a doctor's appointment and she left work for her appointment and traveled about a mile before experiencing the same symptoms as previously stated. my daughter phone me for help and i went to her location and we traded vehicles and i tried to drive it but it wouldn't accelerate as before. the engine would idle and the speedometer indicated 3 mph. i notified ford and requested a wrecker and then was able to get the escape to drive about another mile before it stalled again. i waited for a wrecker that never came and i finally started the engine again and entered the interstate and traveled abt six miles at 65 -70 mph when it lost power again. i idled at 3 mph for about a mile to the ford dealership and they were closed. finally i idled another 2 miles to the daughter's residence and parked the vehicle in her garage.the next day i went to autozone and i asked them what codes p2111 and p2112 were and they advise me it had to do with the throttle body. i then drove it to the dealership at 3 mph and left it . i purchased a throttle body from another ford dealership and installed it in about twenty minutes. it seems to be running good now after test driving it for 15 miles with no issues. the vehicle's warranty expired @ 3yrs or 36,000 miles. *tr

The car lost engine power unexpectedly while under way. pressing the gas pedal made no difference, and the car would not coast - it lost speed rapidly. upon turning the car off and waiting a few minutes, the car would restart and operate normally. sometimes it would operate for normally for the entirety of the trip, other times the car would exhibit the problem again.

While driving there was a sudden loss of power. the wrench icon lit up on the dash display & the engine light came on too. there was no response from the gas pedal at all. the engine stayed on & all other features of the vehicle worked. i shut the car off & restarted the vehicle & continued driving. this occurred 4 times within a half hour. it was a miracle that i was not involved in an auto accident. i brought the vehicle back to a ford dealer where they replaced the throttle body. vehicle has been operating fine ever since & the gas pedal is more responsive than it was before. the original bumper to bumper warranty expired less than 2 months ago & i had to pay for this repair. i am very unhappy. *tr

With no warning, i was unable to accelerate. car went into limp mode. i was able to pull over safely. i am thankful i wasn't traveling at a higher rate of speed or traveling on the freeway; this would have been incredibly dangerous. diagnostic lights on dash indicated something with throttle. was able to get car home - very difficult. had to have it towed. very expensive car repair, 208.00 part (throttle body) and 190.00 labor. *tr

Had been driving vehicle on busy city street for approximately 3 miles through traffic lights. stopped at red light to enter freeway with several other vehicles on two lane freeway onramp. light turned green, i attempted to accelerate to freeway speed, vehicle only obtained about 2mph, vehicle was running but had no response to gas pedal ( rpm's didn't increase), two red warning lights appeared on dash. i managed to coast onto the mini shoulder of the onramp, sticking halfway into traffic, due to the small size of the shoulder. i shifted through park, neutral, drive, no response, turned vehicle off, then restated and vehicle operated normally, warning lights out. very, very dangerous situation and car only has 40,000 miles. in researching this online, there are thousands of similar experiences with all mileages, forums are saying the dealer is replacing defective throttle body assemblies. this is a major safety problem. *tr

Defective throttle body the 2010 ford escape not once but multiple times would go to idle and run rough while traveling on different roads at different speeds. the gas pedal would do nothing to make the car go but it was idling rough and coasting causing us to stop on the side of very dangerous roads. we would turn it off and let it sit for a few minutes and then it would start normal. the gas pedal would work again but repeat the same problem 5 to 10 minutes later. we were certainly glad this did not happen on the interstate in front of an 18 wheeler or we would be dead. the dealership said the throttle body is bad. the car is only 2,000 miles out of warranty from the standard bumper to bumper warranty, the extended powertrain warranty does not cover the part. so we are out almost $400 for a part that should never fail to begin with. *tr

At freeway speed the car lost power. we were able to pull to the shoulder of the highway. a small wrench warning light appeared on the dashboard. we checked the owner's manual, and it referred to a throttle/power train issue and told us to seek dealer attention as soon as possible. the engine restarted, so we continued our trip. we stopped in sulfur springs, tx, at the ford dealership. that morning the vehicle battery was dead (which was the first problem we have ever had with the vehicle), and we began our trip after jump-starting the car. i thought the stalling was related to the battery problem. the events were explained to the tech, we replaced the battery which we felt would also solve the stalling problem. the stall occurred the next day, and again on our return trip. i took the vehicle to our local ford dealer where the throttle body assembly was replaced. we have not, as of now, tested the repair at freeway speed, but were assured by the dealer that the problem was solved. *tr

My car has been having a power train issue past couple of weeks. a wrench light comes on, then my car slowly powers off. it doesn't matter where i am or how fast or slow i'm going. the scariest incident was when i was on the highway going 65 mph. again, the wrench light came on the car slowly powered off. luckily it was late and there was little traffic on the highway. i was able to slowly pull over and restart the car, which started up fine. the car has now done this 4-5 times. again, the scariest incident was on the freeway. i took my car to the dealer and they informed me that the issue is a stuck throttle. after doing some research, i've found that there have been many complaints of the same origin of the ford escapes dating back to year model 2004- with one fatality and multiple accidents. something must be done, i.e. recall issued. *tr

I had just left my house in my 2010 ford escape on december 7th when suddenly the engine bogged down completely and was no longer responsive to the movement of the accelerator pedal even though the engine was still running. the wrench warning light came on and the car slowed to a crawl. i pulled over and was able to turn the car around and return home (1/4 mile) with the vehicle moving approximately 2-3 mph. after i returned home, i restarted the vehicle and the wrench light extinguished and the car seemed okay. i drove a different vehicle to work that day and when i returned home, i put my obdii scanner on the vehicle and retrieved a p2111 pending malfunction code. i cleared the code, started the vehicle and drove it without incident until december 18th when i had the same problem again while driving in moderate traffic. i was approximately 25 miles away from my house when the engine, once again, was no longer responsive to the movement of the accelerator pedal. i was able to get the car out of traffic by pulling into a left turn lane. the wrench light was again on. i turned the engine off and restarted it. the wrench light went out and the car, once again seemed to run okay. i cautiously made the 25 mile trip home with the vehicle. i put the scanner on the car again, and no malfunction code was present. i had been fortunate this time as i was in moderate traffic moving at about 45 mph when the incident occurred. i believe this is a serious safety issue and i could only imagine what could happen if this problem occurred while in traffic on the highway. *tr

I had just left my house in my 2010 ford escape on december 7th when suddenly the engine bogged down completely and was no longer responsive to the movement of the accelerator pedal even though the engine was still running. the wrench warning light came on and the car slowed to a crawl. i pulled over and was able to turn the car around and return home (1/4 mile) with the vehicle moving approximately 2-3 mph. after i returned home, i restarted the vehicle and the wrench light extinguished and the car seemed okay. i drove a different vehicle to work that day and when i returned home, i put my obdii scanner on the vehicle and retrieved a p2111 pending malfunction code. i cleared the code, started the vehicle and drove it without incident until december 18th when i had the same problem again while driving in moderate traffic. i was approximately 25 miles away from my house when the engine, once again, was no longer responsive to the movement of the accelerator pedal. i was able to get the car out of traffic by pulling into a left turn lane. the wrench light was again on. i turned the engine off and restarted it. the wrench light went out and the car, once again seemed to run okay. i cautiously made the 25 mile trip home with the vehicle. i put the scanner on the car again, and no malfuntion code was present. i had been fortunate this time as i was in moderate traffic moving at about 45 mph when the incident occurred. i believe this is a serious safety issue and i could only imagine what could happen if this problem occurred while in traffic on the highway.

Serious and life-threatening malfunction impeded my ability to control my 2010 escape occurred while driving 50mph on a very busy highway. my escape stalled suddenly without any warning what so ever in the middle of the lane while driving on the busy highway. as i tried to continue driving, pushing the throttle pedal, the escape would not go,it slowed down suddenly on it's own. i was able to ease off the payment to the side of the lane; however, i was almost hit in the rear by a auto behind me before i could get off the payment. i was fortunate to have been at a place where i could ease off the payment. the highway is curvy and hilly. this scared me to death. a wrench light came on indicating a malfunction of the throttle/powertrain. the engine was running fine. i turned off the engine and waited a few minutes, then i cranked it and it cranked fine. the wrench light went off. i tried driving it again, and once i pulled back into the highway, giving it gas, it would barely go, so i eased back again. i called roadside assistance and had it towed to the dealership. after it was inspected i was told the electric throttle body had malfunctioned and needed replacing. it was the caused of the sudden stalling while i was driving. my life as well as others were put in a dangerous situation because of this malfunction. i understand that there has been a lot of complaints like mine already filed here. ford should issue a recall immediately before any deaths occur. i had to pay $470 to get this taken care since my warranty was out 3/36,000. i was told that this was not covered by the powertrain 5/60,000. *tr

I was driving on the highway when suddenly i lost all acceleration and had to coast off the road. a wrench was lit up on my dashboard and although i had no acceleration, my engine was still sputtering/running. after turning the car off for a few minutes and restarting it, it ran fan and the wrench light was off. it ran fine for the next week until it happen again. i was pullin onto the access road to the highway and the car again lost all acceleration, but continued to run. this continued all the way home, which i arrived safely, luckily. i called a ford dealership and they were unable to get a service manager on the phone. they were supposed to call me back, which they never did. i ended up taking my car to another shop near my home and they told me that my electronic throttle body had gone out. they had recently made this fix to two other ford escapes, which concerned me. they also had to get the replacement piece directly from ford, which also concerns me because i am now convinced it is a faulty piece altogether. i still feel at risk as they have only replaced the piece which i feel may still by faulty. i am disappointed that ford was put so many people at risk and my hope is that this is researched and is recalled for peoples safety. i feel so blessed that my child was not in the car with me during these incidents although i was extremely scared for my own well being. i would like ford to be held responsible for this. *tr

While driving wrench light came on & with a sudden jerk ford escape's gas pedal stopped acceleration. i pulled car on the side. engine was still running but gas pedal was not responsive. we were waiting for police & tow truck with the hazards light on & someone hit the car from behind & broke suspension etc. i went to ford dealership & they were not at all concerned. then i went to another dealership & they said there computer found throttle problem & they changed it. very dangerous car stops on a highway. i read multiple complaints regarding this matter. please look in to the matter to save lives. it could be a tractor trailer coming at fast speed. thank god we are saved. *tr

Transmission slams into gear feels like someone ran into you. does it a couple time a month but it feels like it's going to break something it causes the car to lurch forward or backwards depending on you putting it in d or r. it also has started slamming into gear while shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. *tr

As i was driving the car the throttle suddenly would not let me 'go' any further and the car slowed to a stop in the middle of the road. when stopped, it shuddered in place until i turned the car off. this happened another time just after a busy intersection, but ford apparently does not deem this a safety concern, even though this is a family vehicle and the consequences for problems like this could be terrible. the vehicle has been in the shop 5 times in the last year for the above problem twice, another couple of times for leaking transmission fluid (which i am also led to believe could cause the car to stop in traffic if the leak remains undetected one of these times), and another for hard shifts both accelerating and decelerating. all of these problems are ones that ford seems unable to fix and doesn't seem to care happened. i keep waiting for a recall to be issued for at least some of these problems, since in several situations i do feel very strongly this was a safety issue and do not appreciate my children having to ride in an unreliable car. i also do not have the money to throw at a 2010 car every couple of months. i would appreciate your looking into these problems. thanks! *tr

While traveling about 20 mph down the street, the vehicle completely lost responsiveness to pressure on the gas pedal. the wrench light came on indicated a power train malfunction. i drifted off to the side of the road and turned the car off. i then waited about a minute and turned the car back on again. everything was fine and the wrench light went away. the car drove fine for another 50 miles or so. then it happened again. there is no warning and when it happens nothing you do can make the car respond. turning the car off then on again solved this problem. through searching through this database, it is apparent this a common problem with ford escape throttle bodies. most likely a defect in the part. *tr

While driving on a normal road, the vehicle's wrench light (on the dash) illuminated and the vehicle became unresponsive. that is, pressing the accelerator yielded no results. this was followed by a shuddering stall-out (engine shut down) when the brakes were applied. the first attempt to restart the engine resulted in a clicking noise. the engine started without fault on the second attempt. the vehicle was driven without incident for the remainder of the day and the following two days. on the 4th day, the incident repeated. normal vehicle operational conditions are short (10 to 15 minutes) one-way trips. ford technicians found the throttle body was sticking in closed position. a new throttle body was installed. *tr

Less than two weeks after purchasing the ford escape, i was headed east from south kingstown, ri to ma on rt 79/24 at 6:30 a.m. driving at approximately 60 miles an hour, without any warning, the car came to a complete stop and the wrench light appeared on the control panel. i was without a cell phone. in the distance i could see an off ramp and was about to walk. i successfully restarted the car, exited the highway, to return to ri. after driving approximately 25 miles, the car again, without any warning, came to a complete stop in seekonk and the wrench light again came on the control panel. again, i restarted the car and proceeded cautiously to south kingstown, when the car again stopped in wakefield, and the wrench light indicating a power train failure appeared on the control panel. i immediately contacted the dealer where the car was purchased. it still had a month left on the original warranty. upon inspection the service department indicated that they could not find anything wrong. they told me that unless the problem could be recreated, they would not replace any parts. because it was labor day weekend, i had to wait until tuesday and took the car to a ford dealer in narragansett ri, where they kept the car for three days. they couldn't replicate the incident and said that unless they could simulate it, ford would not pay to replace any parts. *tr

Driving vehicle on busy highway with cruise control at 60 mph. the dash wrench light came on and the engine idled down, back-fired and would not acclerate. we had to maneuver off the road and stop the engine for a few minutes then restart. it then ran like it should. ironically, we were headed to the local ford dealership to have this checked as this failure had happened three (3) times prior. yesterday, the service tech diagnosed the problem as a defective throttle body and was replaced with a new one. we were not given warranty coverage because the mileage was 36,4xx when it arrved at the service department. an accident waiting to happen for someone else. *tr

Multiple noises started to occur. the first was a cracking noise when accelerating, second came a clicking noise while braking and then a howling sound. the crackling noise has yet to be discovered, the clicking was the drive shaft and rotors. the howling noise is supposedly the transfer case. additionally, the gears do not seem to catch between 50-65mph. *tr

On 8/11/12 was traveling on interstate highway at 65 mph when i noticed i was losing acceleration despite constant pressure on the gas pedal. the vehicle was unresponsive to the gas pedal. steering and brakes were responsive for about 30 seconds. after that 30 seconds the steering and brakes also became unresponsive. the engine continued to run. i coasted to a stop, put the vehicle in park, and turned the car off. after a minute or two i attempted to restart the vehicle. the vehicle restarted and ran normally. on 8/12/12 i was on the highway when the problem recurred in the same order and timing. then on 8/30/12 i was again on the highway when the problem recurred, again around 65 mph. i restarted the vehicle, progressed around a mile further, and the problem occurred again. restarted, and the problem occurred again, around 65 mph, about 30 miles later. at this time i noticed the wrench light was on as i coasted to a stop. i restarted, turned around toward home, and the problem recurred again. at this time i saw the wrench light and the powertrain warning light were both on. i turned the vehicle off, restarted, and was able to drive 70 miles home without any additional occurrences. as of today the problem has occurred six times. i made an appointment with my local dealership this morning for 8/14/12. *tr

Twice, vehicle went into limp mode and failed to accelerate, once while stopped at a traffic signal, and a second time when turning onto another roadway. the engine would only idle and we had to pull out of moving traffic and shut down the engine for a minute and then restart. it would then run fine. guessing the throttle computer had to reboot to function again. *tr

While driving 65 mph on a very busy freeway and without any warning the vehicle jerked and immediately lost power. the engine did not shut off but there was no response from the accelerator. fortunately we were able to coast to the shoulder where the vehicle would not go more than 5 mph. the wrench warning light (for power train issues) came on. we turned off the car and waited 10 minute and restarted the car. the wrench light did not come on and we were able to drive if off the highway to the dealer. the dealer advised the throttle body had failed and since the car was 4,500 over the 36,000 mile warranty limit it was not covered. the dealer replaced the throttle body. if the driver were less experienced and had a failure on a busy freeway at night there could have been a terrible accident. this is a serious safety defect that should be recalled. ford has issued a technical service bulletin on the problem. *tr

Driving on freeway at 70 mph. lost drive power as if transmission had disconnected (even though transmission shifter was in drive mode) and wrench light came on. tachometer showed about 1100 rpm. pushing the accelerator pedal down did not increase engine rpm. coasted to shoulder. turned off ignition and restarted the vehicle, immediately. vehicle started up and drove normally. *tr

My 2010 ford escape is making a noise that started about 2 months ago. the noise sounds like tools were being stored in the back and when i stopped, turned, or even began to take off again i would hear this rattling sound. i had to pay a diagnostic fee of 150 something dollars. test-drove vehicle with mechanic but it was very hard to duplicate. they had vehicle 3 separate times vehicle ended up staying by the 3rd time with them from a thursday till a tuesday i was told it was rust on the sub frame shocked that ford had a service bulletin for and that they had to remove some type of bolts. sound would be gone for a few days but maybe shake back loose. sound now coming from the front. i called back to the 1st dealership and was told by the service manager basically don't bring it back there it is a waste of their time because they can't find anything wrong with the vehicle he asked me where i purchased it and was told to take back to original dealership. i must say early on into the situation i wrote to ford because i was very disgusted that i had to pay a diagnostic fee for something that was a known problem to ford all this time and wanted my fee back. they told me since it was not fixed and the 1st dealership could not really figure out what is wrong take it back to the original dealership of purchase. i found out that again i have to pay another diagnostic fee and i pray that they find or hear something due to the noise is not heard all the time. again, i am out of more money. i decided not to waste anymore time paying diagnostic fees and maybe hope the vehicle falls apart i feel like i am up against a wall i know this is my last time dealing with ford time to move on especially with this 36,000 mile warranty crap. the noise is definitely there as others can hear it. i feel stuck i just pray that nothing happens to me when driving this junk! *tr

A light in the shape of a wrench suddenly appears on the dashboard of the car. the car goes immediately into neutral but engine keeps running. managed to get to shoulder and turned off car. waited and restarted. this was the third time it happened, but the first time it happened on a highway, creating a potentially dangerous situation. each time, the local ford dealer was unable to diagnose the problem and kept the car for several weeks. they've never been able to find out what is causing this. *tr

While driving at 35mph in the city, the car lost all power, while it was able to steer and brake, the gas pedal did not work, rpm slowed to 500 and the car coasted to a stop. the wrench warning light turned on. i turned off the ignition and when i restarted the car, it ran well. the same situation and sequence occurred 24 hours later. i took the care to a local ford dealer who said that the computer revealed no issues. they kept the car and were able to experience the loss of power on a test drive. according to the mechanic, the computer showed no error code but their readings revealed erratic readings with the mass air sensor. they replaced it but told me that the sensor itself did not seem ot be malfunctioning. the defect caused a potential dangerous situation. without power, there would be no way to get out of the way of traffic. i was fortunate that the road was quiet and i could coast from the inside lane to the side of the road without being hit by another vehicle. *tr

Driving on freeway, between 4pm and 5pm, 40mph. wrench light came on and pressing gas pedal resulted in no forward momentum or response from the rpm gauge. pulled over coasting, no further response from the gas pedal in park or neutral. restarted car, proceeded normally. happened again a month later, same speed, same time of day. took car to the dealer. they were able to identify the issue (throttle body) right away from my description. the throttle body was replaced, no further issues. i have seen several complaints via the internet regarding the same issue. issue was replicated in a non-related video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hkmos9pohu. *tr

I was going approx. 30 - 35 mph and my car started jerking and sputtering as if it were out of gas then just died in the middle of an intersection. my husband had to push me across three lanes of traffic to a station where we bought gas. the car started right up so we went continued on with our business. we got on the interstate and was going about 65 mph and the same thing happened. i got it on the shoulder and it died again so we called the extended warranty co. (which charged me an additional $200 deductible on top of the cost of the warranty) and they had it towed to the nearest ford dealership which was on the other side of the interstate. my sister has the same car (only a year newer) and the exact same thing happened to her while she was on vacation in indiana. in researching the incident we discovered this is a very common problem in the escape. the mechanic at the ford dealership where she had her car towed to made the statement that he has been waiting for two years for a recall on this part. if this is a common issue then why hasn't ford issued a recall (recall even a ford mechanic is waiting for)? in researching we also discovered another issued with the back window exploding. i do not fee safe drivng my escape (which i absolutely love). i am ready to trade it in . oh, and the mechanic also said the part he replaced was the exact same part as the one that was originally in the car. when asked what is to keep this from happening again and he said nothing because it is the same part. so, they took a defaulted part out and replaced it with another defaulted part. i would just like to know why a recall hasn't been issued on this part. thanks for your time.

While driving to the tpa on i-75 approaching the exit for i-4 we slowed for a truck that cut us off. our vehicle shifted down at least two gears which caused the engine to over rev. we tried to speed up, but the engine just revved higher. so we slowed while exiting on to the ramp for i-4. we were able to get over to the right and pull off the ramp road before getting on to i-4. we turned the engine off and sat for a few minutes to compose ourselves. i was hoping that the system would reset itself so we could continue. we started the engine and we continued to the airport without anymore problems. i drove home, called john at brandon ford and described the problem. he said it would be difficult to solve the problem because none of the dash lights came on during the incident. he said to drive the vehicle and hopefully it wouldn't happen again. i drove for two weeks drove without incident until 8/26/2011. the same thing happened as before. the engine down shifted about 65 mph and the engine began revving. we slowed the vehicle and came to a stop to make a left turn. after accelerating we felt the engine over revving before shifting. the vehicle is unsafe to drive. it is unpredictable as to when a problem will occur. it's a matter of time before something bad is going to happen. we need this problem fixed with assurance that it is truly fixed or we need restitution from ford for selling us an unsafe vehicle.

Driving off road up a steep incline (40-45 degrees), the vehicle came to a halt. there wasn't any power going to the tires even though i had the accelerator pedal to the floor. the engine rpm would only rev up to about 1200 rpm. it felt as if there was a disconnect between the transmission and the engine as there was no power being delivered to the tires. the tires did not loose traction or spin either. what was especially unsafe about this is that it was extremely hazardous backing down the steep hill i had tried to ascend. i was trying to back down slowly by using the brake, but many times the brakes would lock up causing the vehicle to shift and slide sometimes sideways which could have caused the vehicle to roll. i tried to go up the hill again to no avail. this vehicle is used by the us forest service in which many times the vehicle is required to go of road on forest service roads. there is a section in the owner's manual about off road driving, but it makes no mention that the vehicle should not be driven up steep inclines.

2010 ford escape xlt. starting with about 1200 miles the transmission began hard shifts, hesitation between gears, jerking hard into reverse when engaging, high speed shifts jerk into gear sounding like the rear end is falling out. ford dealer first stated it was normal, after several more complaints they decided to rebuild the transmission. it worked smoothly for about 200 miles then started the same things again, it gets more frequent as the miles mount up. my wife is afraid of the vehicle and will not drive or ride in it. when roads are wet the shifts are hard enough to make the wheels spin. last time the dealer adjusted the transmission, it now hesitates when putting into gear. i was turning around on a road that i should have had ample time but when i put the car into reverse it delayed so long to engage that traffic was heading toward me. if the car sits 2-3 days, it gives a long hesitation to go into 2nd and 3rd gear. also, have experienced squealing coming from engine compartment, ford has change the belt several times and the tensioner, it lasts for a few huhdred miles and starts again. all items i have been told are normal. i have owned more than 20 cars and do not find hard shifts, hesitations, excessive noise and hard clunks to be normal by any stretch of the imagination. i paid $25,000 for this car, i have driven cars that cost half this price that handled better. i have been a loyal ford owner of f150's, explorers, expeditions and even a couple of old f100's. i had always been very happy with them. the escape was an attempt to downsize for our 2nd vehicle and have something more economical, we liked them when we rented them but this one has been a very big disappointment and time consuming.

The automatic transmission in my 2010 ford escape started flaring between 2nd and 3rd gears last september a month after i bought it. flaring is a term used by ford to describe when the transmission delays shifting between gears and the engine revs until it finally shifts. the dealer has worked on it several times and the problem continues. this has not really been a safety issue until two weeks ago. it started flaring occassionally between 1st and 2nd gears also. this is a concern because i'm not up to speed when this happens between 1st and 2nd. with traffic being heavy at times, i'm concerned that someone could rearend me when this happens. the car is at the dealership now to try to diagnose the problem. the dearer along with the ford representative haven't been able to resolve the problem between 2nd and 3rd gears so i doubt they will resolve this problem either. i'm further concerned that it could start happening with 1st gear and i could start to enter a highway and the car would not accelerate when intended and then suddenly accelerate when it wasn't safe to do so.

Purchased a 4-cyl, at, 2010 escape xlt in december 2009, from healey ford in ansonia ct, which is now closed. transmission slippage, jerking, growling noise in reverse, sudden acceleration on highway, all started almost immediately with this vehicle. recall repair on solonoid done, problem persists and is even worse. several near accidents with my $25,000 suicide ride i call an escape...ford has had it twice for repair without success. in ct, i have one more try and i will proceed with connecticuts lemon law arbitration, and ford gets to buy it back.

I purchased a 2010 ford escape limited on 29 july 2010. on 20 sep 2010 i noticed as i placed the vehicle in drive it jerked violently and sounded like the bottom fell out of the car. when i came to a red light it shifted hard down to first gear. i had my dad check it out and it did the same thing with him. he took it to the dealer on 21 sep 2010 and they said there was a problem, it was not suppose to do that. they checked with ford and there was some adjustments they had to do to the computer. this did not fix problem and they kept the vehicle. they now have to take out the transmission and check solenoids before ford will send a new transmission. this could become a safety issue, if the operator has to accelerate and the vehicle will not respond. the vehicle has 5000 miles on it.

I have a 2010 ford escape that was recalled for transmission problems, i brought the vehicle in and it was suuposedly fixed. i took the vehicle on a trip this weekend, the trasmission seized up and almost caused a tremendous rear end accident. i left the car 100 mile from home because now ford has to do the work again. i am concerend that the vehicle has other problems that they are not fixing with the transmission.

I purchased a 2010 ford escape 1/2/10. a couple of weeks after the purchase i went to back up and then go forward. in doing so, when i put the car into gear to go forward there was a jerking motion as well as a loud clunking noise under the car. since that time, i have on numerous occasions experience the same thing. as the car switches gears it will jerk with the same noise. it feels as if the whole bottom of the car is coming apart and about to fall off. i have experienced this at different speeds and it does not happen all the time, but when it does you definitely know it. in the last three days it has happened twice. i try to notice the rpm's to see if it is in the midst of changing gears or not and it is not always when it is due to change gears. i took it to the ford dealer where i purchased the vehicle and they took it for a drive and found nothing wrong. they then did a diagnostic and said they found the factory failed to enter all the correct coding for the transmission so they kept the car and updated it. once i received the car back it has continued to do the same thing. i went online and found the 2005-2009 escape owners had the exact problem i am currently experiencing and found the transmissions burned out at approx 20,000 miles. ford is telling me there is nothing wrong with mine as the problem had been fixed. i took it back in friday evening and was told they just received information that some dealers found they have had to take the 2010 models in, tear out the transmissions and put them together starting from scratch to stop the problem. i was told they would look into it and get back to me. i don't want to wait and have my transmission go out before they will finally see there is a problem. *tr

I have had numerous issues with my 2009 ford escape 6 speed transmission. the transmission was replaced after 17000 k with total internal failure. with both the new and old transmissions i have had experienced the following safety issue on numerous occasions. failure to downshift coming to a stop, which has resulted in the car lingering in the middle of intersections without the ability to accelerate. this has either resulted in a 3 second pause while the transmission decides to downshift, or on about 5 occasions the car has right out stalled. it is a very scary situation sitting in the middle of an intersection with cars bearing down on you without the ability to accelerate to safety. the car has been in the shop numerous times and the transmission technician has updated the transmission control software (via technical bulletin) 3 times, which has not helped at all. the technician has mentioned that there are a steady stream of 2009 ford escape owners in the shop with similar problems, but there clearly is no real solution to the problem. this is a brand new transmission that has been rushed into the escape to improve fuel economy without proper testing. it is clear to me that the ford engineers have not figured out how to electronically control this transmission. i am an engineer myself and understand that components sometimes fail or have weaknesses, but to have failure like this in normal driving circumstances constitutes a serious safety issue in my opinion. i just hope no one gets seriously hurt before ford fixes this properly. *tr
