In its response to the agency, ford acknowledged a higher than normal level of glass breakage incidents in the model year (my) 2010 to early-build my 2011 subject vehicles.the incidentsoccurred when the liftgate glass was being opened, or more typically while being closed, but in both cases while the vehicle was stationery, i.e., not moving on the roadway.additionally failures often occurred during early morning hours when ambient and/or liftgate glass temperatures may have been lower.ford advised that it investigated the failures but failed to identify an anomaly in the glass manufacturing process (which is often a factor in glass breakage trends odi investigates) that could explain the reports.it did however identify a potential thermal expansion/compression condition in the mounting of the rear wiper motor to the liftgate glass.starting at my 2008 vehicle production the motor was attached to the glass using an adhesive.ford revised that design to a nut and bolt type attachment in october 2010, during my 2011 vehicle production.odi's review of ford data indicates that vehicles built after this change exhibit lower glass breakage rates.among the 296 consumer complaints on the subject vehicles, odi identified 15 injury incidents resulting in a total of 18 alleged injuries.all the injuries were minor in nature and consisted mainly of superficial skin cuts or minor lacerations, with two of the injury incidents occurring when vehicle owners were cleaning up broken glass.additionally both the injury rate and report rate (including warranty claims) are low in comparison to similar investigations resulting in safety recalls (see pe04-045, my 2002 ford explorer liftgate glass failure, which resulted in nhtsa safety recall 04v442). in november 2010 ford issued technical service bulletin (tsb) 10-22-10 to address reports of liftgate glass breakage on all my 2010 vehicles, and my 2011 vehicles built through 10/15/2010, the date the above design revision was implemented.the tsb enables owners of affected vehicles to have a broken liftgate glass replaced under normal vehicle warranty, which would not otherwise be a warrantable failure, with the revised design liftgate glass.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.
PE11016FORD MOTOR COMPANY04/27/2011Liftgate Window Glass Breakage
Odi has received eighteen consumer complaints concerning liftgate window glass breakage on 2010-2011 ford escape and mercury mariner vehicles. the complaints alleged that the liftgate window glass shattered spontaneously, while opening the liftgate or while closing the liftgate. in one alleged injury incident, the complainant and her 10 year old son were cut by glass fragments.many of the incidents occurred during cooler temperature operation.ford issued tsb 10-22-10 dated november 22, 2010 titled broken liftgate window glass - built on or before 10/15/2010 for the subject vehicles.the issue section of the tsb states some 2010-2011 escape and mariner vehicles built on or before 10/15/2010 may experience the liftgate window glass breakage, typically when colder ambient temperature are present.this pe investigation is opened to ascertain the extent of the issue.

I shut my tailgate and the rear window shattered on my 2010 ford escape. no one was injured, but it definitely made a huge mess and it was a shock to have this happen. this is the second issue my vehicle has had this year. a few months ago the throttle control went on the vehicle. both not covered by ford, due to the warranty over. i have many concerns that a two year old vehicle could have these type of things going wrong with it. my other concern is ford won't acknowledge these issues with recalls and many of my fellow ford owners are having the same issues. please check into this for us. can say i definitely won't be buying ford again after this. *tr

I had my 2010 ford escape parked in my garage at my house and i opened my rear lift gate to get something out of the back. when i shut the lift gate like normal the glass exploded all over. there was nothing in the rear that came in contact with the glass or lift gate to cause it to explode or shatter in anyway. i was lucky to have only gotten a minor cut from the glass shard if i was standing somewhere else i could have gotten seriously injured. *tr

My 2010 ford escape is making a noise that started about 2 months ago. the noise sounds like tools were being stored in the back and when i stopped, turned, or even began to take off again i would hear this rattling sound. i had to pay a diagnostic fee of 150 something dollars. test-drove vehicle with mechanic but it was very hard to duplicate. they had vehicle 3 separate times vehicle ended up staying by the 3rd time with them from a thursday till a tuesday i was told it was rust on the sub frame shocked that ford had a service bulletin for and that they had to remove some type of bolts. sound would be gone for a few days but maybe shake back loose. sound now coming from the front. i called back to the 1st dealership and was told by the service manager basically don't bring it back there it is a waste of their time because they can't find anything wrong with the vehicle he asked me where i purchased it and was told to take back to original dealership. i must say early on into the situation i wrote to ford because i was very disgusted that i had to pay a diagnostic fee for something that was a known problem to ford all this time and wanted my fee back. they told me since it was not fixed and the 1st dealership could not really figure out what is wrong take it back to the original dealership of purchase. i found out that again i have to pay another diagnostic fee and i pray that they find or hear something due to the noise is not heard all the time. again, i am out of more money. i decided not to waste anymore time paying diagnostic fees and maybe hope the vehicle falls apart i feel like i am up against a wall i know this is my last time dealing with ford time to move on especially with this 36,000 mile warranty crap. the noise is definitely there as others can hear it. i feel stuck i just pray that nothing happens to me when driving this junk! *tr
