The wrench icon illuminated the 4 times the escape failed to respond to acceleration. each time it needed to be turned off and restarted. 1st failure (1/24/13) was at about 20mph (or less) while making a u-turn. i was able to coast over to bus lane. 2nd failure (2/4/13) was at 50mph after traveling 30 miles in heavy traffic. i drove directly to a transmission shop and was told what an extreme safety issue this could be and that this was an expensive transmission to rebuild and it would be $2000 to $2500. 3rd failure (2/5/13) and by now i am quick to start emergency flashers. i was unable to restart in n. i was able to pull into a turn lane and had to turn escape off and restart. i started researching on internet and determined that the problem was the electronic throttle body. 4th failure (2/11/13) same senerio. 2/14/13 i drove to don reid ford, maitland, fl. i spoke to the service manager who agreed with me that the problem was the throttle body. $300 fix included $99. labor with a 12 month warranty at any ford dealer. that point sold me since this vehicle was likely to travel out of town, and that it could be done while i waited. i was not happy to check my paperwork after i got home and find that instead of stating the issue it said customer states replace throttle body per customer request i called the service manager and expressed my concern that this very dangerous safety issue was not documented on my paperwork. i was told that since the dealer did not diagnose the problem, which would have cost another $99 that this was the way it had to be written up. i believe that this sudden gas pedal failure could cause an accident and should be a recall before a death occurs. this 2010 was built 12/09. we bought this escape 10/3/12 with 73,600 miles on it. we have tested it out on a 200 mile trip and a 1,000 mile trip.now trust the 2010 escape.

Driving at 35mph, check engine light came on and suv went into limp home mode, slowing to only 10mph. after re-starting suv 2-times same error appear. took suv to local ford dealer tom holzer, and they said it was a failing throttle body sensor. inquired if there was a known warranty issue and dealer confirmed no, but a service bulletin existed at customer's expense - which was not agreeable. tom holzer service manager advise to contact ford directly (which we did) and ford said to contact service manager (which we did). after numerous phone calls and formal complaints we received no satisfactory resolution. ford was blaming the local dealer, the local dealer blaming ford, and we still had to pay $525 to replace defective throttle body sensor. (ironically our good friends have a 2010 chevy equinox with 80,000 miles that had the same problem and their local chevy dealer replaced their throttle body sensor and provided loaner vehicle during service procedure, both at no charge). needless to say, we were very disappointed with the local dealer and ford's handling of this known problem, and this will be our last ford vehicle purchase after 30-years of dedicated ford vehicle purchases.

Driving at 45-50 mph, car stalled and wrench-shaped warning light came on. by descriptions i've read, car went into limp home mode. i was able to pull to the side of the road... no acceleration capability, tight steering, rpm bouncing between 500-900. shut off engine, restarted, ran fine for next 30 minutes of drive with speeds ranging from idle and 10-60 mph. friend notified me of the below open investigation that fits what happened. investigation subject : electronic throttle body malfunction date investigation opened: feb 21, 2013 date investigation closed: open nhtsa action number: pe13003 component(s): engine

Upon entering the flow of traffic on highway my 2010 ford escape began to accelerate on its own and increasing speed, realizing what was happening i engaged the brake to no avail, i was unable to stop my vehicle. i navigated to the shoulder and was gaining speed on the traffic ahead so i looked for an exit into a parking lot with no one walking in my way and turned into the lot literally on two wheels due to my increasing speed. i saw a wooded area with a snow bank and thought i would head that way rather than the alternative of other vehicles, building or people. as i got closer i then turned the engine off and stopped but not after standing on my brakes and smelling burning from them,

While driving there was a sudden loss of power. the wrench icon lit up on the dash display & the engine light came on too. there was no response from the gas pedal at all. the engine stayed on & all other features of the vehicle worked. i shut the car off & restarted the vehicle & continued driving. this occurred 4 times within a half hour. it was a miracle that i was not involved in an auto accident. i brought the vehicle back to a ford dealer where they replaced the throttle body. vehicle has been operating fine ever since & the gas pedal is more responsive than it was before. the original bumper to bumper warranty expired less than 2 months ago & i had to pay for this repair. i am very unhappy. *tr

On 30 december 2012 at approximately 5 pm i was driving my 2010 ford escape xlt on us 61 in port gibson, ms. i was traveling at approximately 55 mph with the cruise control engaged when the vehicle began to slow down unexpectedly. i glanced down to observe the gauges and discovered the cruise control had ceased functioning and the trouble light (shaped like a wrench) had illuminated. i pressed the accelerator pedal and the engine failed to respond. i pulled to the shoulder and shut down the engine. after checking under the hood for any loss of fluid or obvious mechanical failure i could detect nothing indicating a major mechanical failure. i restarted the engine and observed the gauges noting the trouble light was no longer present. thinking the problem may have been a temporary issue, i again proceeded to travel upon the highway for approximately 100 yards and again the same trouble light illuminated and i lost the ability to accelerate after reaching around 45 mph. i again pulled over, shut off the engine, and restarted. i managed to turn around and go home, but not before i had the same failure occur approximately 4 more times at 65 mph. i contacted ford roadside assistance and the vehicle is being towed to a dealership in vicksburg, ms, 35 miles away. this is the first time the vehicle has exhibited any defects since i purchased it in june, 2012 with approximately 33,000 miles on it. i feel this vehicle is not safe to be operated upon the roads and could endanger my family's safety as well as other motorists. *tr

My wife was driving to work down a country road at about 55 mph with the cruise control on. all of the sudden she felt the car jerk and a wrench indicator light came on. the car immediately started to decelerate. she would push on the gas pedal and nothing would happen. luckily there was no traffic around and she was able to coast into a driveway. the vehicle was basically about to stall out so she turned it off. after 30 seconds she started it back up and it started fine. to be safe we had it towed to the dealership it was purchased from. the dealership said no error message was in the computer system. after consulting with ford the dealership told us that they were pretty sure it was the throttle body that needs replaced. we have not had the throttle body replaced do to the fact that the no error message was in the car computer and there seems to be no guarantee that $500 fix will take care of the issue. upon more research i have done it seems like this issue is a very wide spread issue and happening all over the country. i am just glad that this did not happen to my wife while she was on a busy highway during the morning rush hour, which she does take sometimes to work but this morning choice to go the back way.

Vehicle lost acceleration; gas pedal would not work. vehicle moved very slowly. throttle control/powertrain warning light appeared (wrench). vehicle was turned off and restarted. warning light did not reappear and car ran normally. after some online research, i found many escape owners (not just 2010 owners, but other years as well) describing very similar incidents. my mechanic checked with ford dealer for throttle body part and was told they had plenty on hand since this part seemed to be in demand. cost me $313 dollars. *tr

Throttle became unresponsive and rpm's dropped to idle. luckily was able to coast out of traffic. there was no throttle response at all. problem has been random in nature over the past few months with no codes being presented. turning the car off and then back on again solved the problem (for a while). it has happened while cruising at highway speeds as well as when pulling out into an intersection. yesterday, the throttle quit responding completely and had to have it towed. code check reported p2111 and p2112. dealership indicated throttle body failure. very dangerous as complete loss of throttle control in traffic and when accelerating into traffic from an intersection leaves us in a position of limited control and can surprise other drivers because of our sudden loss of speed. this looks to be a well known problem and is severely dangerous in nature. *tr

I was going approximately 60 to 65 mph on the freeway and i stepped on the gas to accelerate past another vehicle when i very suddenly lost all acceleration. i had to glide across 3 lanes of heavy traffic to try to get off the road. the car idled a little rough, i turned it off and when i started it again it ran fine and the accelerator worked again. i took it to the dealer and they replaced the throttle body. this was an extremely dangerous event and should definitely be looked into. *tr

My daughter was driving to school and as she was pulling off the highway her escape stopped responding to the accelerator, so she pulled off the side of the road, trying her best to not get hit by cars going much faster than she could move, and put the truck into park. i was now talking to her over her cell and i asked tried to push on the accelerator, but nothing would happen, as if the gas pedal was broken. she saw a little wrench in the lower left side of the dash, so i asked her to turn the truck off. after a minute i had her turn the key back on, and the light went off and the truck worked fine. plus, the wrench light was off. two days later the same thing happened, but this time she was driving down a residential street. truck lost power, and the gas pedal had no control and the wrench light came on. she managed to avoid getting hit as she slowed down and cars came upon her quickly. she managed to cruise long enough to get near our house and jumped in and saw the same thing she was experiencing. we parked the escape in the driveway and the idle seemed fine, but the accelerator had no response. i then turned the key off and back on and the little wrench light was gone and the accelerator was fully functional again. i decided to take it in to ford, as it has an extended warranty on it. they called us back later on that day and said there is nothing they could do, as they could not see any codes in the computer. i have read this is a fairly common problem, and in my opinion, very unsafe. when the truck goes into this limp modeyou cannot get out of the way of ongoing traffic. plus, now i am afraid to have her drive this far from my home. i don't want her to get stranded, and if the dealer can't fix it because they can't find a problem. what am i to do? i hope something gets figured out soon. this is not safe, nor an acceptable service response! *tr

The problem was randomly demonstrated several times between 8/31/12 and 9/4/12. the accelerator would seem to stop working or become unresponsive, most often at speeds of 20-30 mph. there would be sputtering, stalling, and then total stoppage.. the motor was running but there seemed to be no fuel flow. i would turn it off, wait several seconds, restart it, and everything would work smoothly until, with no warning, the pattern would repeat itself. it occurred five times /3 miles, two times/1 mile, and two times/0.5 mile. early on 9/4, the pattern repeated three times on the way to the repair shop. these incidents produced anxiety for me and i was going slow. we did not drive the vehicle over the holiday weekend as we were concerned that this would happen on interstate highways when we would be traveling at high speeds.the error trouble codes were po685, p2111, p2112. he said the car was not safe to drive until it was repaired. since the mechanic reported throttle body being the problem i researched the throttle body as it relates to the ford escape. it causes me great concern that this has been demonstrated to be a dangerous and potentially life-threatening problem on the escape since 2000 and i bought 3 new escapes within that time period; a 2002, a 2007, and the 2010 escape, and there has been no effective, corrective action taken to resolve this. the dealership has said there will be no reimbursement of the $475.00 and this part is not under any warranty. although the money is an issue, the greater issue is the need to prevent future deaths. i have the old part that was replaced and i am willing to do whatever i can to force this problem to be resolved.in the interest of public safety i urge you to issue an immediate recall until this problem is resolved. thank you for your interest. *tr

The vehicle's accelerator (gas) pedal randomly stops working resulting in immediate loss of speed and power to the engine. accelerator is unresponsive and vehicle will sputter/crawl to 5 mph until ignition is turned off and car restarted. after restart, vehicle runs normal until problem occurs again (sometimes within minutes). problem occurs randomly as little as 1 time per trip to as many as 8 times in a 25 minute commute. problem occurred 12 times the other day with many of them on a multilane interstate while traveling 65 mph in the far left lane with nowhere to quickly pull-off the road. very dangerous when it occurs on the interstate and you quickly have to maneuver to change lanes and pull off the road or risk coming to a stop in the middle of a busy highway. this problem also causes the vehicle to sometimes run rough and negatively impact the emissions. the error code from the vehicle's computer is p2112 which is related to the throttle body. i have researched this problem on the internet and discovered it's an extremely common and very serious problem with this vehicle. a recall needs to be issued before someone gets killed. *tr

While traveling at a speed of approximately 65mph my 2010 ford escape failed to accelerate. my speed dropped to a crawl and i was forced to drift to the breakdown lane. at this point the car was jerking back and forth and would not move forward. i turned off the car and re-started, and drove no more then 45 mph to my dealership. about 1 week after the first occurrence, it happened again at a very low speed, approximately 25 mph. i again pulled over and noticed a wrench illuminated on the control panel. again i brought the vehicle to the dealership, no resolution. the dealership is now asking me to drive the vehicle with a diagnostic device attached to capture data at the next failure. this is a very serious safety concern! i am concerned that this sudden loss of acceleration will result in an accident and possible injury. *tr

I took my 2010 ford escape 4 cylinder automatic transmission 2wd vehicle in due to the nhtsa recall notice for the transmission. even before i got the recall notice i noticed that 1 time out of 10 when i engaged my car from park to drive that the car would shake violently ( like, someone just hit my car with their car ). in addition, often, i would notice that the vehicle would not switch gears in a clean and proper fashion. so, when i got the recall notice, i thought this will be fixed. after getting the car back from the ford dealership and them saying nothing was wrong with the vehicle and the my car was not effected by the recall, i still had these same issues all the while. well, on may 8, i was driving home and the wrench light (powertrain fault indicated/detected ! ) came on the display/instrument panel. in addition, i noticed that the transmission was also not running that well. i took it into the dealership and dropped it off right away that night. it has been 5 days and the work is still not done. my service advisor tells be that it is the valve body that needs to be replaced. he said perhaps on wednesday it will be done.

I was driving on the interstate at about 80 mph and suddenly my car jerked, and lost all control of acceleration. my car went from 80-15 in just a matter of seconds. no matter how hard i pressed the gas, i could not accelerate. thankfully i was in the fast lane and was able to coast to the shoulder. the check engine light was on. i turned my car off and a few minutes later i was able to drive it again. very scary. my car is at the shop now and as of yesterday they haven't found a problem. i have researched it and told them it sounds like the throttle body is bad. there have been numerous of complaints. this is extremely dangerous and ford should have a recall immediately. it's a shame i'm terrified of driving my two year old around in my two year old car.
