PE11016FORD MOTOR COMPANY04/27/201108/18/2011Rear Liftgate Window Glass Breakage
In its response to the agency, ford acknowledged a higher than normal level of glass breakage incidents in the model year (my) 2010 to early-build my 2011 subject vehicles.the incidentsoccurred when the liftgate glass was being opened, or more typically while being closed, but in both cases while the vehicle was stationery, i.e., not moving on the roadway.additionally failures often occurred during early morning hours when ambient and/or liftgate glass temperatures may have been lower.ford advised that it investigated the failures but failed to identify an anomaly in the glass manufacturing process (which is often a factor in glass breakage trends odi investigates) that could explain the reports.it did however identify a potential thermal expansion/compression condition in the mounting of the rear wiper motor to the liftgate glass.starting at my 2008 vehicle production the motor was attached to the glass using an adhesive.ford revised that design to a nut and bolt type attachment in october 2010, during my 2011 vehicle production.odi's review of ford data indicates that vehicles built after this change exhibit lower glass breakage rates.among the 296 consumer complaints on the subject vehicles, odi identified 15 injury incidents resulting in a total of 18 alleged injuries.all the injuries were minor in nature and consisted mainly of superficial skin cuts or minor lacerations, with two of the injury incidents occurring when vehicle owners were cleaning up broken glass.additionally both the injury rate and report rate (including warranty claims) are low in comparison to similar investigations resulting in safety recalls (see pe04-045, my 2002 ford explorer liftgate glass failure, which resulted in nhtsa safety recall 04v442). in november 2010 ford issued technical service bulletin (tsb) 10-22-10 to address reports of liftgate glass breakage on all my 2010 vehicles, and my 2011 vehicles built through 10/15/2010, the date the above design revision was implemented.the tsb enables owners of affected vehicles to have a broken liftgate glass replaced under normal vehicle warranty, which would not otherwise be a warrantable failure, with the revised design liftgate glass.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will monitor this issue and reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.
PE11016FORD MOTOR COMPANY04/27/2011Liftgate Window Glass Breakage
Odi has received eighteen consumer complaints concerning liftgate window glass breakage on 2010-2011 ford escape and mercury mariner vehicles. the complaints alleged that the liftgate window glass shattered spontaneously, while opening the liftgate or while closing the liftgate. in one alleged injury incident, the complainant and her 10 year old son were cut by glass fragments.many of the incidents occurred during cooler temperature operation.ford issued tsb 10-22-10 dated november 22, 2010 titled broken liftgate window glass - built on or before 10/15/2010 for the subject vehicles.the issue section of the tsb states some 2010-2011 escape and mariner vehicles built on or before 10/15/2010 may experience the liftgate window glass breakage, typically when colder ambient temperature are present.this pe investigation is opened to ascertain the extent of the issue.

My family was about to leave on a trip, my wife closed the rear trunk of our 2010 ford escape, and the window on the rear trunk shattered completely. there was absolutely no obstruction; the window exploded on impact. broken glass fell in all directions: in the car, in the parking lot, on my wife, and around the neighboring cars. we cleaned up the glass on the ground and drove the car to our dealership. we have a full bumper-to-bumper warranty, but were told this type of damage is unwarrantable. as it was explained to me, any instance in which a window shatters completely and glass shards fall inside the car, ford concludes there must have been an obstruction and does not cover the cost of replacement. ford's corporate office said they could not overturn the serviceman's conclusion unless there was a recall on the part in question. i believe this is an abuse. the window is clearly defective: i have been driving for seventeen years and never witnessed a window explode as this one did, and then i find that at least 18 similar complaints have been filed with the nhtsa for the same issue. to insist that a part must be under recall before they honor a warranty is an unrealistic hurdle that ford puts in place. *tr

The glass on the driver's side door of my vehicle has many verticle scrathes - more as i use the window. i am fearful that as time passes these scratches will impair my view. i have read of many owners having the same problem and at least one in which the glass spontaneously 'spider webbed'. i have contacted the local ford dealer as well as ford customer care regading this issue and because the vehicle is out of warranty for that component they will not repair. they will not even allow a field representative to have a look. ford has issued a technical service bulletin - tsb 10-25-5 that describes the problem i am experiencing and the repair procedures. currently there are numerous scratches on the driver's side and a few on the passenger side (passenger window is used less frequently). there are numerous complaints regarding window glass - http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2010/ford/escape/window+glass. http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2010/ford/escape/visibility/problem.aspx. i am contacting you becuase i feel this and other glass problems are a safety issue and should be recalled and repaired by ford.please help to fix these problems and mine. thank you,

Rear wiper fails to operate at constant speed, often preventing driver from seeing what is behind, which creates a safety concern. owner's manual (page 66) states that rear wiper has a normal speed and an intermittent speed. however, dealership and ford customer care claim that two intermittent settings (one with longer delay) is the design intent. this is absurd. no other vehicle with a rear wiper which i have driven (rent frequently) does not have a constant speed operation.

2010 ford escape limited(hybrid) rear windshield glass exploded sometime during the day while i was working a 12 hour shift in the parking lot of my current job. location being indianapolis, in, yesterday was in the 90 degree range of temperature. walk out to my car about 1:30 a.m. this morning and saw glass all over the ground, looked up to my vehicle, and noticed the back window was still in one piece in the middle and glass cracked out all around the edges. no sign of an accident or damage to the exterior of my vehicle except little scratches from where the glass had busted out. components holding the glass were hanging out of the latch including the windshield wiper component, hinges glass was attached to., and glass latch you would use to open the compartment. being that this happened on a saturday night/sunday morning, no replacements were done as the ford dealership will not be open until monday. have a 5 year/100k warranty on the vehicle and plan on taking it in the first thing tomorrow morning. the trunk compartment had not been used all day or even the vehicle since about 11 am earlier saturday morning. had been sitting for close to 13 hours. glass exploded out about 4-5 feet behind the vehicle. very displeased.

My husband and i were at our camp site and loading the vehicle for a trip in the woods. it was early morning, around 34 degrees outside. we had the rear hatch door open, putting the dogs inside the back of the vehicle. upon closing the hatch, the rear hatch window violently exploded. glass went flying everywhere, luckily the dogs weren't hurt and no persons were in the car at the time. we immediately called our ford dealer to report the incident & asked if there was a defect known and if this was a warranty issue. they said they had never heard of a problem. this is extremely dangerous!!! i can only imagine there are probably lots more of these incidents that haven't been reported because most companies flat out tell you glass is not covered.

I went to open up my real tailgate to place a blanket in the back of the escape. i closed the tailgate with normal velocity and when it shut, the rear window imploded. the tailgate was not slammed, the window itself did not have any damage prior to this incident. i only had the car for <1 month. i only put 312 miles myself on the vehicle. this could of been more dangerous if either the vehicle was traveling or children were in the backseat.

Windshield has a manufacturing defect that creates a heat shimmer like effect when looking through it. this causes a distortion during the day, but distortion increases at night or rainy weather. ford has replaced this once under warranty with another ford windshield. new windshield has same defect.

The rear window on our 2010 ford escape shattered when the door was closed. we purchased the car on november 5, 2009. the car was less than 90 days old and had less than 900 miles on it. it is used within a 10 mile radius of our home with very little expressway use. the ford service department said that our warranty and extended care policy did not cover glass. the window was repaired through our insurance company. there was no evidence that the window had been hit by flying debris or misused in any way. we feel that the window/glass was defective and a safety concern. it could have caused more damage if it had shattered when we were driving or if someone had been in the back seat when it shattered. *tr

I shut my tailgate and the rear window shattered on my 2010 ford escape. no one was injured, but it definitely made a huge mess and it was a shock to have this happen. this is the second issue my vehicle has had this year. a few months ago the throttle control went on the vehicle. both not covered by ford, due to the warranty over. i have many concerns that a two year old vehicle could have these type of things going wrong with it. my other concern is ford won't acknowledge these issues with recalls and many of my fellow ford owners are having the same issues. please check into this for us. can say i definitely won't be buying ford again after this. *tr

This complaint involves the spontaneous explosion of the rear cargo door window in a 2010 ford escape. the explosion occurred for no apparent reason. my family members suffered very minor cuts and scratches. some of our personal property was ruined by the millions of glass slivers that went everywhere. the vehicle was owned by budget car rental, so i do not know what the cost of repair was, since they ultimately did not hold me liable. i prepared a complaint with a lot of details that is over 5000 characters long. i do not want to re-write it here. please contact me and tell me how to send the entire document, if you need it.

Simply closed the rear hatch of our 2010 ford escape and the back glass exploded in our faces. there was nothing in vehicle that hit or contacted the glass whatsoever. there was no extra effort used to close hatch. simply closed it as we alwasy do (not slammed) and the glass blew up all over us, our groceries and the interior of vehicle. we went to dealership and talked to service manager who replied it was because you live on a dirt road. i said, so if you live on a dirt road you should avoid purchasing a ford escape?. he had no reply to this only said ford would not cover the damage. there are thousands of escapes with this problem online and nothing seems to be getting done about it. we had to replace the window at the cost of almost $500.00 with no guarantee it wont happen again. looks to me like the weight of the rear wiper motor over the latch is too much weight and causes stress on window when closing.
