Dt*: the contact stated while driving 70 mph on dry roads the two driver's side tires blew out within two hours of one another. there were no warning signals prior to the incident. upon inspection of the other tires the contact noticed tires over inflated and bulged. when a service dealer was consulted, they were unable to provide assistance. the vehicle manufacturer was also contacted, and they were unable to provide assistance. when the tire manufacturer was contacted they determined those were the wrong tires for this type of truck. updated 05/16/2006. *ak *nm

Traveling north in light rain on ih 55 at brookhaven, ms on sunday afternoon, march 20, 2005. i experienced a sudden failure of a firestone steeltex r4s radial tire. luckily it was on the rear of my 2000 ford excursion, and i was able to get to the shoulder quickly and safely. the tire tread had separated from the ply for about a third of the way around the tire on the inside. the tire has 34,000 miles on it. this sudden failure in a similar mode as the other firestone failures leads me to believe perhaps they should be recalled also. this tire is an original tire that was installed at the factory, and is a load range d tire. my excursion is a diesel model.*ak

I purchased 4 big o big foot at tires in august 2003. in the four months between july 2004 and november 2004, i experienced 3 separate high-speed catastrophic blow outs on 3 of the tires. in each case, i was traveling at highway speed (65 mph) with my family in the vehicle. the first was on a warm summer day, the second was on a moderate day, the third was at about 35 degrees. the first two blow-outs occurred on the front passenger side. the third was on the rear driver's side. after the replacement of each of the first two tires, the remaining three wheels were rotated. in each case, it was a stuggle to maintain control of the vehicle, but in the third case (rear tire), the car skidded dangerously out of control as the rear end swayed back and forth. had i not steered into the skid, i am certain the vehicle would have rolled over. the big o dealership replaced the tires each time, but insisted that the failures could only have been caused by encountering some road hazard which caused the tires to de-pressurize quickly, heat up and then blow. however, three high-speed blowouts in four months indicates not an isolated circumstance or coincidence, but a dangerous and potentially deadly pattern.*ak

I own a 2000 ford excursion. it just turned 36,000 miles. while driving on the interstate friday, july 23, 2004 my left rear tire exploded, causing paint damage to the rear of my truck. we replaced the tire with a spare and brought it to a tire dealer. he looked over the other tires and said they didn't look bad but you really can't tell from the outside. while driving yesterday august 15, 2004, my right rear tire blew out causing structure damage to my fender and paint damage to the side and rear of my truck. i again bought a new tire and have contacted my insurance company to repair the damage to my truck. the tires are firestone steeltex r45 lt265/75 r16. the vin # 1fmnu42s3yee14965. *ak

In feb. 2004 i received a letter from ford recalling the tires i had on my 2000 ford excursion. the tires had 44000 miles on them at that time with no failure. we had the replacements put on by capitol city ford in indianapolis on 03/25/2004. my wife and some family went to tennessee over the memorial day weekend and on the return trip the driver side front tire blew out. it didn't leak out it blew out. the driver, larry d. mcroberts 317-891-9020, advised he had to use extreem effort to keep the vehicle somewhat straight but it did go into the center median of i 75 just north of lexington kentucky across one lane of traffic. the tire was changed, with the new spare and they made it back to home. when presented to capitol city for replacement they advise it would only be covered by b. f goodrich @70 % of the cost. that is not the main issue, we had 44000 on defective firestone tires, but could not get 1500 miles out of the replacement goodrich tires and had a potentially serious blow out at highway speed. the goodrich tires are now the standard for the ford excursion. the tire that blew had a dot number of 013w384a18003 from the michelin warranty form number aa5110951. at the dealership a mechanic stated to me, when i brought in the tire, looks like goodrich took a lesson from firestone are these tires failing the same as firestones? *ak

Replacement of firestone tires initiated by recall of 2/26/04. i replaced these tires in 2001 at 17,200 miles because of safety concerns. at that time there were many complaints to nhtsa and shortly thereafter an investigation was open. ford now uses e rated tires on the excursion which run at higher tire pressure. once again ford did not outfit the vehicle with a proper tire for the weight of the vehicle, rather opting for a smoother ride of a d rated tire. they were doing this because the front springs were also inadequate for a good ride. the used e rated tires on the f250 and f 350 from which the excursion is based. *ak

This is our second tire blowout and third tire problem with these firestone steeltex a/t tires. the 1st blow out i contacted firestone and even sent them what was left of the tire and all i received back was a form letter stating that the tire was driven on while under inflated. which i know is not true because i check the tires before going on any road trip and inflate to the recommended pressure. the first blow out was november 1, 2001 while my wife was driving the excursion and this time i was driving it going around 75 mph. both times, the tire has caused damage to the vehicle. my wife and i feel lucky that both times we were able to control the vehicle and bring it to a stop safely. but i can easily see how someone could loose control under this situation. you need to get all of these tires off the road immediatly. i believe these tires are dangerous not just to the drivers of the vehicles, but also to anyone else on the road with them. please contact me if you have any further questions. sincerely: ken lubbering. *ak

We were driving down highway at posted speed (65) and had been driving for approximately 30 miles at time of tire failure. just a few moments (approx 1 minute) before the failure, the vehicle seemed to want to wander a bit as if a tire were a bit low. then there was a loud explosion, the vehicle dropped to the right rear, we got a lot of vibration and loud internal noise. we applied the brakes and manuevered to the side of the road. both sidewalls had blown completely free of tread belt separating fairly uniformly along a line roughly 1 inch below the tread. tire was in 3 distinct pieces, all 3 pieces in tact and wrapped around the wheel and axle. only visible break in interior surface of tread was a piece of the steel belt material protruding into the tire approx 3/8 inch. otherwise, interior surface clean and smooth. no external punctures of any kind. explosion was violent and feel anti-lock brakes saved the day for us. person following behind said they had never seen a tire explode like that (i.e. very visible from several hundred feet behind). we have photos and the remains of destroyed tire, plus all 3 of the other originals if needed. immediately replaced all 4 with another brand.*ak (dot number: vnw81xy459 tiresize: 265/75r16)

September 18, at approximately 4:30 pm my wife experienced a bona-fide blow-out of the left rear firestone steeltex on our 2000 excursion. i had checked air pressure sunday afternoon at 55 psi in each tire. lisa was proceeding east bound on the sam houston parkway on clear roads, in the middle lane, at 65 to 70 mph, when this catastrophic failure occurred. their were no road hazards noted, and no tread damage other than a complete tread separationthis morning i replaced all of the firestones with michelins for $884.65 at discount tire company on fm 1960. i do not want to further endanger my family with these tires.*ak (tiresize: 265/75/16)

Going 25 mph, we heard a swish noise and it was the sidewall of the rear driver side tire. there was a 3 long tear in the sidewall that goes into the tread area. this is the second time this has happened. last time we were going 60 mph and the tire shredded before we could come safely to a stop. both times it's been the same location, rear driver side. both times it's been a side wall failure. we are replacing all tires including the spare as i do not trust them. my tires are not under the recall and ford/firestone said it is a road hazard problem and/or tire inflation. they were at 65 psi and the max rating is 80 psi. i've been driving for 15 years now and this is the first vehicle to have the sidewall go out and for it to happen twice in one year is too coincidental.*ak (dot number: vnw81x0249 tiresize: lt 265/75r)

Fortunately for my family and i, we were traveling along a straight section of turnpike just south of tulsa, ok at approximately 65-70mph. without warning, the right rear tire blew out. the sidewall is completely detached from the tread. the tread on the tire is fine and there were no punctures or other defects in the tire. it took the tire to two separate tire dealers (not firestone) for their opinions. both indiciated that the tire suffered from a total sidewall failure on the outside of the tire. both dealers examined the tire for punctures, etc. there were none. i took the vehicle and tire to the dealership for assistance. so far, they've been incredibly reluctant to assist. they have agreed to replace the one tire. however, i live in fear of placing my family of five in my practically new $40,000 vehicle. i have zero confidence in these tires and have ordered replacement tires (non-firestone of course). the primary reason i purchased this vehicle was safety on the road with my family, now i don't have that peace of mind with these tires. i've researched similar information on the internet after this occurrence and found at least 6 photos and reports of the exact same type of tire failure of this tire. i'd hate to imagine what would have happened if this had been on a curved section of highway at approximately the same speed if the blowout had been on the front outside tire. my family and i probably wouldn't be around to report this to you. i'm very concerned and upset with ford, firestone, and the nhtsa for not pursuing this with more vigor to date. ford has indicated to me, these tire failures are within acceptable industry standards and they don't want to set a precedent by replacing my tires. how many people have to die before these tire failures fall outside acceptable industry standards. please help. please respond so that i know what you are doing on my family's behalf.  On 04/28/2000, i was towing my boat and trailer to lake erie on ohio state route 11 north when my rig suddenly began to fishtail extensively in perfect road and whether conditions and at a speed of approximately 50mph. i immediately applied electric trailer brakes to all four trailer wheels which did operate but to no avail. i then tried to hold the brakes on the trailer and also apply acceration to the truck to pull this rig out of the fishtail. within a matter of 5 seconds or less, i was thrown off the right side of the road into the hillside with a blown right rear tire on the truck. having pulled boats and trailers all of my life i couldn't figure out why this rig got away from me so fast, especially at the speed i was going. after everything about firestone tires that came out in the following months, i feel that something definitely happened to this tire to cause the accident. after getting the truck repaired and then checking the consumer report's website about tires, i decided to check out the dot dates of the tires that remained on the truck and found out that all these tires that were installed as original equipment were manufactured in early 1990. as far as i'm concerned, this is fraud and negligence on both firestone's and ford's part since they sold and put outdated tires on this new truck. i emailed a complaint to ford's customer service with the same information that i am providing you, but it was to no avail. at this time i'm looking into possibly filing a suit against both ford and firestone. if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at home or work. thank you. robert e. archer, d.d.s.  I am the owner of a 2000 ford excursion that is 11 months old with 20,700 miles. i have just dropped my truck off yesterday for routine service where i purchased it (gladstone ford, londerry, new hampshire). i have a complaint regarding the firestone steeltek r4s tires that came as standard equipment on my ford excursion. my tires are so worn that the service manager at the dealership said that i probably will not get the winter out of them. i have also complained to him that when we drive at highway speeds that the whole truck starts to shake. this is the second time that we complained to the service department that the shake is getting worse. i am also concerned because we heard on the television on friday evening 09/29/00 that the nhtsa is investigating these tires for possible defects. is the shaking a sign of the tread coming apart? i am very concerned that the winter is fast approaching, and my wife, who is the primary driver, depends on this vehicle to drive our four children around for various activities. i rotate the tires at 5000 mile intervals and keep the air pressure at the recommended specifications as required by the ford motor co. i am a former mechanic and always maintain my vehicles in top condition. this truck has never been used in an off-road environment. i am surprised that these tires are wearing down so quickly. i would like information on what i am to do, as the dealer says that i must contact firestone. at the dealership we tried to look up the expected mileage that i am to get out of these tires, but we could not find this information anywhere. i am very surprised that ford selected these tires if they are only to get 20,000 miles of wear. i spent over $43,000 for this truck, and i expect to get better wearing tires than the steeltek r4s. *ak( dot number: )

On sat. (08/10/02) my family and i decided to take a leisurely drive into the hill country just outside of austin, texas. i was driving my 2000 ford excursion on hwy 71, westward at an approx speed of 65 when the front right tire completely separated from its tread. this occurred unexpectedy for there was no debris on the road and no object was hit or struck. the seperated tread tumbled over and over in the wheel well area causing extensive damage to vehicle. i narrowly escaped hitting oncoming traffic and managed to limp the vehicle over to the shoulder. the tire remained inflated - no blow out, tread simply came apart! after recovering tread from roadway, the tire was changed with spare and further limped back to austin to original dealership. dealer service manger reviewed damage as well as drew my attention to opposite front left tire which appeared to have a bubble on its tread. the excursion, under factory warranty and the firestone steeltex a/t lt 265/75r16 tires original tires purchased with vehicle - i assumed ford would pay to replace tires and fix damage to vehicle. i am not pleased to report ford is pointing finger at firestone and informs me any damage claims must be directed to firestone hq. i filed incident report #818333 with firestone and was required to ship both tire & tread to their hq. after only 1/2 day investigation - firestone mailed form letter in return stateing ..tire failure did not result from defect in either materials or workmanship.but rather insufficient air pressure. this is not true. i am meticulous in the care and maintence to this vehicle including its tires. pressure was checked just prior to our outing that same day. i would never put my family at risk due to negligence on my part. its sad to see neither firestone nor ford take any responsiblity for these defective tires.*ak

I own a 2000 ford excursion. original tires were firestone steeltex radial at lt 265/75r 16d. on 6/1/02 my family and i were on i-70 in illinois. we had a blowout of the right rear tire. the tire completely shredded. steering immediately became difficult. i swerved into the median of i-70 and slowed to a stop. i got out and observed the damage. i located an area dealer who had replacement tires. i did not want to further endanger my family. i had the tires replaced. i took photos of the tires. when we returned home, i contacted ford and firestone about these tires and inquired if they were part of the 2002 tire recall at firestone. i was informed that these tires were not part of the recall and that they were perfectly safe to operate on my vehicle. i informed them that they should investigate these tires too because of my recent accident. they offered to sell me new firestone tires which i declined. now, it is apparent that these tires were also defective and firestone has begun another recall of these tires. i then contacted firestone. i related the account of the incident and gave them the data on my tires. they stated that these tires were part of the recall and they started to give me information on how to have the tires replaced and to be reimbursed. when i told them that i obviously had to replace the tires back in june of 2002, they informed me that their recall and reimbursement plan only covered tires that were replaced after march of 2003. i replaced my tires too early to be involved in this recall! given no other recourse, i am now filing this complaint. how can firestone not reimburse me for tires that were obviously defective? they endangered the safety of my family and caused me to replace the tires long before their service life. now they tell me that i replaced them too early? please let me know what other avenues might be available to get firestone to take responsibility for their defective tires and reimburse me for the cost of new tires.*ak

Left front tire blow out....my wife sharon serne was driving east on hwy 50 coming up to the eldorado hills exit when out of no ware the left front tire (firestone rs4 lt265-75-16) of our 2000 ford excursion blew out, she was pulled hard into the center guardrail and did extensive damage to the entire left side of our vehicle. sharon did a great job on avoiding any other persons or doing further damage to the vehicle as in rolling or going over the embankment that was up ahead. when we bought the vehicle i looked into the firestone tire problems just for this kind of concern and at the time could not find any type problems so i felt ok about their tires. until now im very concerned about the quality of the tires that my family will have on the cars we drive. thank you for your time i know its important, if you can help by pointing me in the right direction i would really appreciate it. the senre family. *ak

Firestone tire defect - steeltex -- last week my son and two friends was driving my excursion at about 75 mph when the tread on the left front tire separated. this was witnessed by an on-coming driver. my vehicle ran off the road hit a culvert and flipped end-to-end. there was extensive damage to the vehicle both front top and rear. the air bags did not deploy. one passenger was life-flighted from the accident scene. very fortunately all of the passengers were wearing seatbelts -- all were injured but none seriously -- the injuries of the passenger that was life-flighted was not as serious as initially believed.

I was proceding north on i17 just north of new river az when my left rear tire exploded. at the time i was traveling 75 mph which is the speed limit on the highway. i was in traffic and it took at least a mile to slow down and get off of the freeway safely. as i use this vehicle for recreational usage i had just had the tires rotated and i checked the air pressure 20 min. before this occured. all tires where at the proper inflation and since the tires had more than 50 percent tread i felt they where in great shape. i have since retired all of the tires by replacing them as i can't take the chance of another blow out. i was lucky i was not towing the 26' trailer i usually tow with this vehicle.*ak

We had been traveling for about an hour in the desert in approx 100+ degree heat on i-40 about 30 miles west of needles, california. the truck starting to shake badly and then we heard a pop. we looked in the rear view mirror and saw the entire tread from the tire flying back on the road. we were unable to get the tread due to the traffic. we called the number in ford's owner's manual for their road side service. they sent action tow out of needles, california, (760-326-4068) to change our tire. the tow driver, israel, said he had changed five firestone tires on excursions in the past three days! he said one of the excursions only had 7,000 miles on it. we had three adults and three children, including a baby, in the vehicle and all were extremely upset. luckilly my husband was able to get the car over to the shoulder and no one was hurt. we had just called ford the week before this trip because we were concerned about the firestones on our long trip. they told us there were no problems with this tire and they weren't being recalled. we went to the ford dealer when we got home. they told us they wouldn't cover the tires or damage to our vehicle under warranty. they referred us to firestone. we called firestone and they sent us a claim package. they said they won't honor any claim without shipping them the damaged tire. *ak (dot number: vnw81x0379 tiresize: lt26575r16)
