Problems with tire failure on 2001 ford excursion. *mr the consumer experienced 2 catastrophic tire failures while driving. during the first failure there was no indication of a road hazard and the tire was properly inflated prior to failure. the consumer simply accepted the tire failure as a fluke. the second tire failure occurred while driving 55 mph. the tire separated from the plies across the tread face and a very noticeable thump was heard and felt. no solution was offered or alternate bridgestone/firestone product with higher load range was available. the consumer was forced to replace all 5 tires. *nm

At 62 mph, my left rear tire developed a large bulge (approximately 12 in diameter) on the tread area which extended into the sidewall approximately 4. the truck shook violently and i pulled off the road. the tread never separated from the tire carcass. i believe it would have separated if i had not stopped immediately. my vehicle is a 2001 ford excursion with a diesel engine. the tires- firestone steeltex lt265/75r16- are original with 35,850 miles on them. i check tire pressure weekly and keep it at 60psi for these tires. they have never lost air in the 12 months i have owned the vehicle. *jb

The sidewall/tread of one of my front tires looked as if it were in the early stages of tread separation as indicated by a crack or linear indication that extended almost 75% around the perimeter where the sidewall met the tread area. there were also numerous other areas of notable separation that appeared to be a result of the rubber material being too dry perhaps. i called ford and they said there was nothing they could do about it and referred me to this site. before failure occurred with my family in the vehicle, i installed all four new tires, model michelin ltx m/s that i purchased from cosco. this is a 2001 ford excursion with approx 30,000 miles on it at the time. unfortunates, i wasn't really thinking at the time and did not have the technicians at cosco save the old tires for me. *nlm

Ford excursion with 2700 miles showed severe weather checking on the white letter side of all four tire sidewalls. the tires appeared as if they were rotting away. a ford dealership said that they were not in the tire business and refused to discuss the problem. firestone indicated that it was normal wear until i indicated that i wanted their opinion in writing. firestone then replaced all four tires, charging me for labor, balancing, stems, etc. the media has indicated that these tires are now failing like those found on the ford explorers. i have no faith in firestone or the tires and would like to see an immediate recall on the steeltex radials. dt

On 7/18/02, the right front tire quickly went flat at a speed of about 65mph. the mileage on the tire was 24,000. the brand new spare, also a firestone steeltex, was installed on the right front, and blew out at approx 20 miles. the number on the new tire is dh323xg12d, serial # vnw81x03400. number on the tire with 24000 miles is d5323xg16l, serial #vnw81x03400. these 2 firestone steeltex tire failures occurred on the same day less that a few hours apart. roads were dry, and temperature was about 85 f. obviously, i lost all confidence in the tires, and replaced all 5 tires (yes, even the spare) with michelins at a cost of over $1100. these are load range e tires which makes them quite expensive. although the firestone tires were not subjected to recall, i wonder why not. the firestone dealer i contacted was extremely rude, and said there was nothing he could do about the failure as they were not subject to recall. also, ford said there was nothing they could do. talk about passing the buck. at least, i know my family is now safe on michelins. i would never purchase anything with the firestone brand as i believe they have serious quality control problems. would be pleased to further discuss this with anyone. i am not particularly looking for financial assistance, but have noticed many other ford excursions still with the firestone steeltex tires on the ground, and wonder about the safety of those involved. thank you.*ak

While traveling the speed limit on an interstate highway, june 2, 2002, we had only traveled approximately 20 miles, when we experienced a tire explosion on the front driver's side. this caused us to lose control of our vehicle, crossing two lanes of traffic, and ending up in the median. before coming to a complete stop, the vehicle had traveled approximately 60 yards, turned sideways, and almost rolled. my excursion was up on two wheels, nearly rolling over. it stayed suspended in air for a few seconds before falling back down on all four wheels. no other vehicle was involved, and no physical injury was incurred. however, it endangered the life of my family, and traumatized my children. there needs to be a further investigation into firestone tires. there definitely is a problem there.*ak

Email sent to firestone today. i was disappointed to learn that the seriously flawed sidewalls on my steeltex lt265 r75 r4s tires on my 2001 excursion would not lead to a replacement. i reported a problem on these tires to the briarwood firestone store in 2002 and again today. this is especially troubling since i was advised to replace a tire in 2002 at my cost and have had absolutely no problems with the side walls of the replacement even though i continued to use the same car wash i have used since purchasing the car new in august 2001. also, i ran firestone firehawk 31-10.5-15 atxs on my sema show jeep in 1995 and 1996 only to be forced to request replacements from nashville after serious sidewall damage in completing the rubicon. the damage was due to major sidewall weakness leading to large areas of the sidewall pealing away to reveal the white sub layer. john taylor of firestone graciously replaced the atxs with bridgestone mts that performed flawlessly in all trail tests (including a run through the rubicon in 1997) and never experienced the type of sidewall destruction seen on the atxs. the type of damage to the sidewalls on my excursion is similar to that of the atx's, but much deeper and more pronounced. it could not have been caused by the car wash as the splits run both directions (forward and back). also, i take my other vehicle through the same car wash and have not experienced any damage on michelin or b. f. goodrich tires on that vehicle. the fact that i have experience with trail testing firestone tires, that i am an engineer, and that i reported problems with the atx's in 1996 should show a level of knowledge not characteristic of the normal user. this did not matter to the store manager. furthermore, one of the store personnel made a silly remark that the damage was ford's fault because they advised users to run the tire pressure too low. *ak

 1. i have a 2001 ford excursion. i had firestone steeltex a/t lt 265-75 r16's all the way around my vehicle. we were driving on the highway and had a blow out; it was the right front tire. we got out looked at the tire and the tread had separated. the steel in the tire torn up the undercarriage and wheel well and did a lot of damage underneath and to my grill guard. within less than 50 miles, my other front tire went out. but with this one the tread was pulling away and falling off (again tearing up the body as it went). the tire never blew but the tread did enough damage to my truck that it will have to be fixed on that side also. the body of my truck will need work. when i open my doors they pop because it is rubbing on the frame that has been pushed back. when we got to our destination it was late saturday so we had to wait until sunday (which was easter sunday and not many places were open). we went to sears and had new tires put all they way around the vehicle. we were not going to take the chance of the back ones separating on the way home. *jb

As of september 10th, 2002, i have had two tires with seperated belts. i have had my excursion in two different dealerships due what appeared to be steering issues. the vehicle wonders on the road as if it has bald tires. i had one dealership tell me it is charactoristic of the vehicle. i had a second tell me it was tire pressure and proceeded to inflate my rear tires to 65 psi. i had another dealer this week tell me the two rear tire appear to have issues with the belts. now this same dealer just rotated my tires. i started researching for defects and was astonished at the amount of reports out there on the internet. why is it that your agency is not pursuing these defects? please advise? nlm
