POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - GEAR POSITION INDICATION (PRNDL)
97V171000 | FORD MOTOR COMPANY | from 07/22/1996 to 08/22/1997 | V (Vehicle) | 866000 | 10/20/1997 | ODI | FORD MOTOR COMPANY | 10/07/1997 | 10/10/1997
Defect Summary | Vehicle description: light duty pickup trucks and multi-purpose passenger vehicles. if the automatic transmission shift cable assembly was not fully attached to the steering column bracket, the shift cable assembly can come out of the bracket. the vehicle operator would then not be able to shift the transmission from one of the drive gear positions into the park position even though the gear shift selector would indicate park.
Consequence Summary | The condition would not allow a disengagement of the transmission from the park position or affect proper neutral start switch operation. unintended vehicle movement could occur if the parking brake was not set.
Corrective Summary | Dealers will make the proper attachment of the transmission shift control cable to the steering column bracket and add a tie strap to that connection.
Notes | Owner notification is expected to begin october 20, 1997.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393. |

I have a 1997 ford expedition which has had the following symptoms: the fan blower stays on while truck is off, the battery dies for no apparent reason after truck has sat unused for short periods, various lights on instrument panel come on and off while driving(including abs, airbag, all 4wd related lights, low wash, check engine), overdrive light blinks, speedometer doesn't work, truck doesn't accelerate and shift properly, radio comes on when truck is off. clicks and beeps can be heard sometimes when in use and off. the dealer said the gem and fuse box were damaged by water leaking from windshield. they replaced parts(for $600 and told me that i had to go and get the windshield fixed. i asked how they knew the water was certainly coming from windshield, and they said because of location etc. and i asked them what will happen if it rains after i pick it up and before it gets looked at. they said i'd be fine if it's within a few days (just don't wait a month). well i picked it upon the evening, and made an appointment for the next day for windshield. it rained overnight, though i even covered the area as best i could. i woke up to the radio blaring from my truck. i turned the truck on, shut it back off, radio still played so i shut its power off. as i drove to work, some of the other things started to happen again as well. i am not happy that (a) i have had to pay for ford's inadequate workmanship and (b) i now have to fight with them about what is going to happen now since the rain has already screwed it up again because they left it in my hands before the leak was fixed. that truck never should have left their garage until it was taken care of. i don't know why they couldn't do it themselves, but they could have at least had the glass company come and do it there. this clearly is a common problem with expeditions, and i think ford should be forced to do something about it. electrical malfunctions are not something to let. *nm

Vehicle was placed in park. while the vehicle was running it jumped out of park into reverse and rolled down a hill into some metal poles which stopped the vehicle. this occurred on private property and there was no other damage to property or person other than the rear door panel of the vehicle which was damaged by the impact. the shift lever of the vehicle will not go into park properly now and appears to be somewhat loose. i have an invoice that indicates work was done under warranty to correct a problem with the shifting cable on 12/29/1997, but the dealer and ford claim no such work was ever done. *jb

The complete engine failure occured gradually..the dealer never was able to diagnosis it until coolant in cylinders 1 and 4 caused the vehicle to not start. the control-trac is very disconcerting since the traction control system will not stay in 4 wheel drive when it has been selected to do so. i have turned this vehicle in for servicing for this problem on 8 occasions with no resolution....

The steel lines connection the transmission to a transmission cooler rusted out and failed resulting in a loss of fluid. this causes it to start slipping and almost get stuck in traffic. i had to cut out several bad sections of steel line and replace them. note that the filler tube to replace the fluid also rusted out. *jb

I was braking and brake pedal sank to the floor. it turned out steel hydraulic brake lines had failed. i had all of them replaced in about 3/06 for a cost of $1000. i did not replace at the time the master cylinder to abs lines. they failed on 11/23/2006 and i have retained them. if these components had failed at highway speeds it could have been potentially deadly. note that my 1994 taurus sho had a similar failure. this vehicle has also had the transmission cooler steel lines fail and other severe undercarriage rust problems. *jb

Two transmission oil line fittings that are located on the radiator worked loose, causing the lower radiator hose to swell and potentially rupture. transmission is burning on the engine from getting thrown back by radiator fan. *ak

Tl*the contact owns a 1997 ford expedition. the contact stated that he is unable to shift the transmission from one of the drive gear positions into the park position. the failure occurred even though the gear shift selector would indicate park, which allows unintended vehicle movement. the manufacturer stated that they were not responsible for any repairs since the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign id number 97v171000 (power train:automatic transmission:gear position indication (prndl)). the vehicle has not been repaired according to the recall. the failure and current mileages were 166,000.

Problem with gear shift on 1997 ford expedition. the problem is a sticking shifter that won't allow the vehicle to placed in park. therefore, the vehicle can't be properly secured and/or restarted since the vehicle can't be shifted to the start postion. the indicator indicates p for park but the transmission is still in reverse. vehicle must be shifted to neutral for starting giving the opportunity for potential roll offs. could be related to nhtsa campaign # 97v-171nsa-111 although local dealer states my vehicle id doesn't fall under this recall. local certifed mechanic states the problem is in the actual cable that be the result of vehicle recall defect. he has personnally fixed 3-5 of these defects within the last 3 months in a small rural shop.*ak

At slow speed in 4 wheel drive going through a mud puddle, the flange that extends from the rear axle shaft on which the disc brake caliper is mounted, broke in such a fashion that three of the bolts fell off releasing the caliper to fall against the tire. in addition, the brake line separated and the brake fluid reservoir emptied. the parking brake cable was also severed and nonfunctional. no object was hit to create the problem and was confirmed by the fact that there is no other damage other than this flange. it appears, for now, that the flange cracked releasing the disc caliper assembly which then must have rotated around until the brakeline severed. the failure of the flange would therefore appear to be a manufacturing defect in the quality of the material that makes up the flange (weak steel?). what may be of concern is a similar occurence at high speeds

Paint and finish on roof of vehicle peeling, cracking, flaking off - oxidation from rust, ruining entire outer car surface - have been advised that primer coat was either missed or skimped during the production process... ford will not address this issue - one male rep from ford stated: the paint job is only supposed to last 2 years not an acceptable answer...also, child safety locks engage themselves, thus preventing occupants in rear seats to exit vehicle, can cause injury or death in an emergency situation... also, vehicle rear wheels and or axels chatter at low speed turns... also, an audible hum in vehicle at normal highway speeds...also, audible squeaking from interior side panels...ford dealer states: cause cannot be located...also, leather seats have cracked and show signs of abnormal wear - this is apparant in all leather seat coverings but especially in the front bucket or captain seats...ford states warranty for vehicle no longer covers -engine has had several episodes of misfiring of revving on it's own - has been explained away as a computer problem or a sensor problem - always at cost to consumer...check engine light has come on on numerous occasions, using previous explanations as stated previously. have numerous invoices for replacements of sensors, computer chips, etc.*ak

The first time we took the expedition on the road, 180 miles into the trip we pulled into a gas station and noticed liquid on the ground by the front axle and found it had pumped app. 1/2 of the front axles grease out. i contacted the company and they have a technical bulletin out about that and it was suppose to be fixed under warranty. they said since it was not fixed under warranty and i did not buy it from a ford dealer it was up to me to fix it. i called the local ford dealer(rozum motor co - 605-996-5614) and talked to brian per ford's instructions and he told me it would cost me about $500. if it pumps out all the grease while travelling down the road what happens if it ruins the front axle or even worse would lock up? i don't see how they can have a design problem and tell me i have to fix it especially when they admit they know of the problem! they say it only happens in about 1 out of a 1000 vehicles then why don't they fix those that spew grease out inadvertently as they say. *ak

Axle-front- lubricant leaking from front axle tube vent hose--issue oil is forced out the vent tube and sprayed oil all over right/front tire and disc brake and rotor. i paid to repaired it. ford had no concern about the safety problem. ford knows about the problem. there is a tsb (97-10-10). oil on the brake pads rotor and tire would cause a stopping problem . also oil based lubricants cause rubber parts (seals) to swell up on anti-lock brake system. ford would not pay to repair the factory built- in defect and would not acknowledge any safety problem. a new design axle tube is needed to correct the origional design flaw. oil coated tires and brakes do not stop well, and should be looked into before someone gets into an auto wreck. *ak

The transmission failed at 28169 miles(1/19/99 - 18 months after delivery), and the rear at 42407 miles(11/19/99 - 28 months after delivery). in my 41 years of driving, i have never heard of this kind of failures that fast. usually these failures occur after 10 or 15 years. i suggest it was a part failure, but ford will not honor the repairs, because i have gone beyond the 36,000 warrenty. i think ford should shoulder some of the $1700.00 cost, as a good will gesture. they have declined.

Panhard bar bracket has large crack on drivers side. i have talked to many other expedition owners and many have had the same problem. however, i see nothing on your website about a recall on this from ford. if this bracket would fail, say, in a corner, it could certainly cause a loss of control, as the panhard bar helps locate the rear axle assembly under the truck in cornering. is there a recall on this by ford? if not, there should be as this appears to not be an isolated incident. thank you for any help you can give me in getting ford to fix this problem. *ak
