Initially, while applying the brakes on dry pavement, the abs would engage intermittently. the front brakes were replaced after this happened. unfortunately, it continued to occur intermittently. after which, the abs light would light up. the rear abs sensor was replaced and it still continued to happen, but the brake pedal would be hard initially but could be pushed through. a bearing was replaced on the frontend. the abs would continue to engage randomly. now, after the vehicle has been driven, then sat for 15-30 minutes, and then driven again, the abs will engage--but then the brake pedal is very hard and difficult to push. the abs light comes on. our mechanic is now using his tech hotline to learn how to fix this. *tr

While driving on a expressway traveling at 55mph, my wife felt a thumping and heard noise coming from under the truck. when i looked underneath, i noticed 2 holes punched through the backing plate of the rear brakes on the drivers side. i pulled the wheel and the rotor off and the parking brake shoes and hardware fell out onto the ground. after talking to a ford dealership i learned that this is a common problem with expeditions. i researched it on line and found other reports of the same issue including some instances of wheels locking up. this could cause serious accidents. why has ford not issued a recall? i have also had 2 leaking exhaust manifold gaskets that i am told is also common.

This vehicle has had no brakes on numerous occasions. when we took it in to our local ford dealership for the first time on 10-7-98, we were told because they cannot duplicate the problem, we have no problem. when it was taken in on 1-27-99 to our local ford dealership they called the manufacture this time to find out if any other expeditions might of had this same sort of problem and was advised no. they decided because it had the same brake system as another ford vehicle to change the front sensors. when i went to pick the vehicle up from them, i was told by the service manager that i should drive with the anticipation that the brakes could go out at any given time. they were not sure that this fixed the problem. well low and behold the brakes went out again, this time a solo accident with this vehicle with no brakes. we were very lucky no other vehicles were involved as someone would definitely have gotten killed. this vehicle definitely poses a high safety risk to the roads and highways it is driven on.*ak

My wife had just began to press the brakes to slow down to go around a curve when she realized the brakes were not working, and the steering wheel would not turn as usual as all power was gone. she ran into the wrong lane of traffic on a split off road and was able with great pressure to get the truck stopped. she was very lucky no traffic was on the off road. after turning the truck switch to the off position and putting the truck in park, it started right back up. on 6/22/98 martin ford tested it, but only replaced the wiring assembly and did find anything wrong. it has happened twice since then, but not as scary since it has been when we were slowing at traffic lights and going straight so as not needing to turn. but really noticing the extra strength it takes to stop the truck without power brakes. we love the truck, but are glad it is a leased, and we will be returning it in september, we are just scared that if those other expeditions have the same problem, there could be major accidents over it. *ak

Low speed to moderate speed you apply the brake pedal as you would normally do and all of a sudden you have no pedal and it starts to pump for no reason at all it happens on dry roads and wet or snow covered roads then you finally stop and look down at the dash trying to figure out what just happened and the abs light is illuminated on the dash for no reason at all. i have had just about every brake part sensors, computer ect.. replaced it worked for a couple of months and now it is starting again there is no warning before it happens. i am really worried cause now i have a son 17 who occasionally drove the vehicle but as a result of the brakes malfunctioning he can no longer drive the expedition (unsafe). i have read other complaints on here about the same thing happening. i am going to contact the local ford dealership but i know that is going to cost me more money than i already put out to fix it! *nm

I have had a total of three bolts back out that secure the passenger side front brake assembly. this has occurred on two different occasions. one bolt on one occasion was subsequently replaced. the second occasion resulted in two bolts backing out and allowing the brake assembly to fall against the inside of the wheel. this resulted in the brake assembly binding against the wheel and fracturing the wheel. once the wheel was cracked the tire whent flat instantly, thus ruining the tire as well. i had been traveling at 75 mph shortly before the failure occurred. had i not heard the brake assembly scratching against the wheel and stopped, this could have resulted in a very serious accident. i feel like if it is happening to mine, it is probably happening with other ford expeditions and trucks as well. if this is not corrected i believe fatalities may result. by the way, i'm out about $700 for towing, rental car, tire and wheel replacement. *ak

At slow speed in 4 wheel drive going through a mud puddle, the flange that extends from the rear axle shaft on which the disc brake caliper is mounted, broke in such a fashion that three of the bolts fell off releasing the caliper to fall against the tire. in addition, the brake line separated and the brake fluid reservoir emptied. the parking brake cable was also severed and nonfunctional. no object was hit to create the problem and was confirmed by the fact that there is no other damage other than this flange. it appears, for now, that the flange cracked releasing the disc caliper assembly which then must have rotated around until the brakeline severed. the failure of the flange would therefore appear to be a manufacturing defect in the quality of the material that makes up the flange (weak steel?). what may be of concern is a similar occurence at high speeds

On several occasions it has felt like a flat tire or something dragging. the car was taken to ford on 3-16-99 and found to have a rear seal that went out on the brakes taking the drums and rotors with it. the parts are on back order and will take at least a week from time taken in for service. i want to know if this is a problem with other expeditions and if a recall is in the process. thank you. *ak

I was braking and brake pedal sank to the floor. it turned out steel hydraulic brake lines had failed. i had all of them replaced in about 3/06 for a cost of $1000. i did not replace at the time the master cylinder to abs lines. they failed on 11/23/2006 and i have retained them. if these components had failed at highway speeds it could have been potentially deadly. note that my 1994 taurus sho had a similar failure. this vehicle has also had the transmission cooler steel lines fail and other severe undercarriage rust problems. *jb

Sudden and catastrophic brake failure caused by rupture of rt. front brake hose, loss of all fluid and total failure of brake system. vehicle was stopped by use of emergency brake pedal. no casualty but as incident happened without any warning in a hospital parking lot consequences could have been dire. original purchase dealer maintained vehicle on schedule: most recent service and inspection in august 2005. vehicle garaged with 96,000 mi. *nm

The car is a 1997 ford expedition. the front to rear brake line corroded and failed. this happened coasting into my driveway. even though it is a split system the braking left was minimal. the partition between the front chamber and the back didn't seem to leave enough fluid in the front chamber to allow effective remaining braking. not to mention the brake line corroding through in less than 8 years. i had the brake line replaced but did not retain the old brake line. the cost was $623.04. *ak

To fully engage the brake, the consumer has to press it below the level of the accelerator, if consumers foot is partially hanging over the accelerator would become engaged before the brake was fully engaged, dealer said vehicle met factory specs. nlm

The relationship of the brake & accelerator is unsafe. when the brake is engaged, it is below the level of the accelerator. in an emeregency stop, it is possible to fully engage the brake, and with your foot partially overhanging to accidently engage the accelerator. this is a design problem with all expeditions, and ford has been unwilling to correct it. *ak

While approaching a utility crew flaman i applied the brakes. it slowed and then almost immediately thereafter the brakes were no longer available. i ran past the flagman flashing my lights, pumping the brakes as well as the emergency brakes and honking the horn. after running three cars off the road and checking on my four year old in the backseat we came to a stop. the drivers side brake line had rusted in two at the metal/rubber hose junction. i replaced both left and right hoses. the passenger side on visual inspection looked o.k. did i mention we were pulling a flat bed trailer and going down hill with no shoulders, only drop offs!
