Defect SummaryVehicle description: light duty pickup trucks and multi-purpose passenger vehicles. if the automatic transmission shift cable assembly was not fully attached to the steering column bracket, the shift cable assembly can come out of the bracket. the vehicle operator would then not be able to shift the transmission from one of the drive gear positions into the park position even though the gear shift selector would indicate park.
Consequence SummaryThe condition would not allow a disengagement of the transmission from the park position or affect proper neutral start switch operation. unintended vehicle movement could occur if the parking brake was not set.
Corrective SummaryDealers will make the proper attachment of the transmission shift control cable to the steering column bracket and add a tie strap to that connection.
NotesOwner notification is expected to begin october 20, 1997.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

Years ago when purchased the expedition i noticed the shift gear out of alignment. i try to contact the dealer as i heard that this was a recall; i was told that the recall is not for my vehicle. it has know been a few years since i bought the truck and i'm now experiencing what i've noticed many others with an expedition which is truck is not engaging into parking position and rolls. this is a concern to me as my drive way is on a slight up hill. this is an endangerment to the public, the issue happens unexpectedly. i would not like to see someone hurt because of a roll back or forward due to what is supposed to be a manufacture defect from the many cases i've read up on so far. ford dealer needs to address this issue as well as the coil and spark plug which blows out of engine and air suspension problems. this vehicle has cost me thousands in repair, its not worth and can not afford the present repairs.

Coil and spark plug blow out of engine when truck was started (1998). the expedition has been known to have this issues as well as other issues. why is ford not taking responsibility; so far accident avoided. i had to replace one coil pack each year so far but this was the worse. i needed the cinder retreaded to fit the spark plug in.

While sitting at the red traffic light ,when the light turned green to go upon taking off at normal speed the drive shaft fell completely out and broke at the drive shaft universal ears of the shaft and the right lower rear controlling/trailing arm broke at coupler because it was very badly corroded with rust from weak material and drivers side rear looks the same way . also my expedition is not a rust bucket, it is driven very little in the winter. the drive shaft ears that hold the universal joint is made of cast steel, which is very unsafe, if ford would send the pair of trailing/controlling arms we will have them put on at my cost. with the dry shaft made out the of that kind of material the vehicle can flip out of control and cause damage, harm or death. sounds to me that one day ford may have a law suit because of these problems and i'm sure that i'm not the only person that this has happened to . no wonder why its a lot of ford expeditions on the lots cheap. from some research of the web it seems to be happening a lot. ford needs to make rite what they did wrong!

First, the interior lights and running lights would not power off while all doors were closed, door ajar indicator was on. took to dealer problem resolved for a month or so. now need to spray wd40 on latches religiously. dealer also replaced cruise control harness at this time. then came the radio and heater running with the key out of the ignition. beeps and clicks and bad smells coming from under dash. again to the dealer, no codes found for the issues i was having. battery draining occurring frequently now and no resolution. i now have to disconnect the battery everynight. now when i drive down the road i get the many failure lights flashing on the dash, the windows won't work, speedometer fails, truck loses power and the transmisson shifts strangely. i was hours from home and doing 70mph on the highway when evidencing decided to not work at the same time. then i realize that this is occurring only when it rains or is very wet out. and i was truly afraid for my life and the others that were on the road with me. i had to drift across a lane of traffic with no power to get to the side of the road. i put the truck in park and put my head down, whew, and the motor powered back up and all the failure lights were off. only after investigating on the internet today do i find out this is a common problem. and the fix... replace the windshield seal! and possible damaged fuse box and gem! now why didn't the ford dealer help remedy this problem one of the many times i was in? this problem has been occurring for several years. new windshield $165 and they come to the house. i paid big money for no codes match your issues, miss. tw*

I have experienced this failure 3 times now, the first time happened a month ago 12-12,2008 then again 12- 22-,2008 & again today 1-16-09, all these incidents happened when the temperature was in the single digits to teens. my 1998 ford expedition would not slow down at stop signs & stop lights without shifting to neutral & turning off the engine. if i would just shift to neutral the engine would rev to 4000-5000 rpm & i would not have any control of the steering or brakes. when i tried to use the brakes by using constant very firm pressure the brakes wouldn't work , but would overheat & smell burned. i took it to a repair shop that determined there was ice & other junk built up on the throttle cable. this was removed after the 12-22-08 incident. the mechanic told me to warm up the vehicle for a least 20 minutes before i started driving anywhere & then leave it running as much as possible, because the driving of short distances could be the cause of the ice by just taking short trips of 4 miles or less. today 1-16-09 i had a different mechanic look at it & he is ordering a new throttle cable & hopefully this will solve the problem. the situation could have turned out very badly if there had been vehicles too close to me when i couldn't control my vehicle. i am very fortunate that no injuries occurred, although i suffered mental stress and anguish. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 ford expedition. the contact had to make several attempts in order for the vehicle to shift into drive. while driving 30 mph, the vehicle had to be placed into drive and then neutral in order to reverse the gears. the failure occurred without warning. the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop for inspection, but they could not determine the cause of the failure. the technician later stated that there was a recall on the shifting gears. the vehicle has not been repaired. the manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not under recall and any expenses would have to covered by the owner. the failure mileage was 125,000 and current mileage was 135,000.

Consumer states that while driving in 4 wheel drive that something did no't seem right. later, when checking the transmission, metal was found in the pan, a claim adjuster stated that a small hole in the valve body was plugged causing the overdrive band to fail, however this was not related to the accident. *slc

My 1998 gear position indicator shifted suddenly to reflect the wrong gear. when the car is in park, the indicator indicates it is in reverse, when in reverse it indicates it is in neutral. this is a known defect, dealership and ford both state it is not a vin included in the 97v171000 recall. *tr

The gear marker for my 98 expedition transmission began to mark incorrectly. the gear shift changer shows thats its in park, when its actually in reverse. it also shows that its in neutrual when its actually still in drive. the marker is off its center and has caused me and my wife several close calls. i called the local ford dealer which said my vehicle was not coverd by the 97 recall, (97v171000) of sept 30, 1997. i also contacted ford customer service who related the same info the local ford dealer had stated. this is a dangerous situation and i believe ford should fix it for us. my wife and i have hit several parked cars when trying to negotiate the vehilce into a parking space. there was no damage, but we were lucky. *nm

The overdrive switch for my vehicle is located at the end of the shifting lever, which is located on the steering column. the wiring for the od switch runs through the shifting lever and exits at the base of the steering column, then down into some wiring harnesses. the steering column is covered by a plastic housing. this plastic housing has worn through this wire, which has caused the od system to switch on and off while the vehicle is in operation. this has created a dangerous situation, especially when operating vehicles on the highway. i have encountered problems when passing vehicles on the highway and the od system fails because of this short in the wire system. in my opinion, this is a design defect. there's no clearance between the plastic housing and the wire that exits the shifting lever. i brought this to the attention of the dealership and they refused to accept responsibility because the warranty period is over. they estimated the repairs at $300. i also notified ford at (800) 392-3673 and they refused to accept responsibility.*ak

While operating the vehicle at about 20 mph, it droped into 4 wheel low range completely on its own. the dash switch was still in 2 wheel drive. the transmission began screaming and grinding gears and would not come out of 4 wheel low. vehicle was towed to ford dealership where they found nothing wrong. after reporting these nhtsa complaints and service bulletins about this very same problem, and providing the service manager with copies, they suddenly found the problem. they are replacing all the components including mode switch gem module, 4x4 shift motor. they'll also check all connections, change all fluids including transfer case and transmission. we've been assured this will resolve the situation. we'll submit a follow-up report if problem recurs.

I had a 1994 ford econoline 150 custom van for a year and a half with approx 55,000 miles on it prior to getting this expedition. the transmission on it also slipped while driving and was in and out of the shop too many times to count. the dealership was not ever able to duplicate the problem. so i traded it in on the expedition. the first two weeks of owning the car it was in the shop for a broken door handle. then the next week i had it in for the cd changer not working. the next month (month #2) i took it in because the front end shimmied when i pressed on the brake. the dealership turned the roaters. the next couple of weeks a tire began squealing and i took it into the dealership and they again turned the roaters and did a brake job this was in month #3. now we are approaching month #4 and during the week of july 4th, 3 days in a row, while i was starting from a red light the transmission slipped. the rpm's went up but the car didn't go at first. as soon as i took my foot off the gas the transmission ingaged. i took it into the dealership the next week and they couldn't duplicate the problem. they did a transmission flush on it. on july 23rd while in downtown ft. worth, tx, i was driving and needed to get over into another lane to turn onto the highway, so i accelerated, the transmission again slipped allowing the rpm's to go up almost to 5000, and the car was not going any faster. i quickly took my foot off the accelerator and it went into gear. i immediately called the dealership and have now taken it back in (7/29/99). they have called me and said they can't get it to duplicate the problem. i've known three other people who have had different ford products, 2 had thunderbirds and the other has a 1999 f150 and they also have experienced transmission problems. this could be a real danger, especially if the car hesitates while changing lanes and there are cars coming up behind you. i do not blame the dealership, i blame ford manufacturing.

Dt: 1998 ford expedition. the contact found recall 97v171000, for the gear position indicator. upon taking the vehicle to the dealership, they stated it was not part of this recall. the contact stated for a month the vehicle will not go into park, the vehicle has to be in reverse to be in park and in neutral to be in reverse. the vehicle has to be in drive to be in neutral and it has to be driven in drive 1 or 2. the vehicle was looked at in the dealership and he has received an estimate. the vehicle was not fixed at that time. the contact called ford and they state the same as the dealership, according to the vin the vehicle is not part of the recall. the contact did have the transmission checked, but the transmission shop stated there is nothing wrong with the transmission. this is a constant problem.. *ak

Began making noise. had it checked and repaired by dealer. dealer said this was a factory defect where the ring and pinion gear were very badly mis-aligned. the ford dealership mechanic said it was the worst he has ever seen. he said this was responsible for the pending failure. he said if we had waited, it would have caused a failure. we reported this to ford motor company, but they said they would take no responsibility. we feel since this was a factory defect and not normal wear and tear that the company should take responsibility for this. *jb

We were on vacation june 27, 2004 and our 1998 ford expedition broke down 15 miles outside of flagstaff, az. we were towed to aamco transmissions, whom after getting authorization from our service contract to check our truck found that a seal gasket in our transfer case had melted and all the oil ran out. these are supposed to be covered for 150,000 miles, our truck is at 92,184 miles. i have a service contract covering me for 96,000 miles. they refused to fix it because they said it was tampered with first, then they said the transmission wasn't covered, then it was because we drove it with no oil. aamco told them us the part was covered under our service contract but that they get this alot from service contracts where they don't want to pay for the work. aamco also said that these trucks do not have indicators on the transfer cases to show that anything is going wrong or that oil is leaking. we have never had problems. our r oil levels were checked on june 25th before taking off for vacation and everything was fine. we have never had leaks. we had 3 of ouryoung grandchildren with us. we were driving on a freeway and our truck just started slowing down really fast and were lucky there were not many cars at that time so we could pull off the side of the freeway. so you can see that this thing could lead to accidents if someone is driving and all of a sudden your vehicle slows down in heavy, fast traffic because you have no way of knowing this is happening or anything is happening with your truck. we are having this fixed at our expense, seal gasket in the transfer case?, $1700 + $240 labor to check it and take it apart. i will never buy another service contract after this on a used vehicle. i bought my truck from chapman chevrolet who since changed their name to freeway chevrolet in chandler, az and they were not willing to help me with this service contract which i bought from them.*ak
