I have a 1999 ford expedition eddie bauer 4x4 that has all the symptoms of your investigation #ea05015. i took my vehicle in while it was still under warranty and i was denied a claim for them to fix it at my local dealer because they said that the cause was due to moisture and it was not covered by under warranty. this sounded to me to be a manufacturing defect and felt it should have been fixed by them. during that time i had to replace my transmission and transfer case which are controlled in some way by the gem module so i am told. i have not been able to fix the gem and fuse box to this date due to the high cost that was presented to me. i am not certain of the actual date this took place but it was identified while the vehicle was still under warranty. *jb

1999 ford expedition-perfectly maintained. 37000 miles on odometer-transmission blow out. just all of a sudden, almost got into an accident due to loss of power. this is the second ford vehicle owned that had a transmission failure! first one at only 8000 miles! under warranty for that one. ford will do nothing to help with this problem. will never purchase another ford again!*jb

General complaint about vehicles that allow movement without stepping on the brake. my friend had a tahoe and his grandson got in the car turned the ignition key not starting the car, but two clicks and the car rolled, kid jumped out and was crushed by the tire. i believe there is a safety device that requires a foot on the brake that should be required in all cars. i have 3 children under the age of 7 and am concerned about this. i tested my ford expedition and it does not have the safety feature. *nm

1999 ford expedition experiencing problems with the head gaskets. *mr the consumer felt that the engine should be replaced at no cost. the passenger side head gasket leaked oil badly. ford replaced the head gasket once while under the manufacturer 36k mile warranty. the head gasket was replaced again at the consumers expense because the leak resumed. the consumer was informed by three different ford technicians that the oil passage in the block of the engine was so close to the edge of the block that a head gasket would have a problem preventing oil from leaking out and ford developed 2 or 3 revised head gaskets to address the problem since 1999. after th second repair ofthe head gasket, one of the heads leaked anti-freeze. other problems were: an inoperative horn, transmission shifting made a whining noise and the vehicle would not heat up when at zero. *sc *jb

We purchased this vehicle from a private owner we knew very well and all regular maintance had been performed according to ford recomendations. in 2001 with only 30,000 miles the transmission had to have o-rings replaced in transmission because of problems with the automatic shifting. we had the transmission flushed just prior to the following incident as recommended by the ford owners manual. in june 2002 while towing a trailer (weights within limits of vehicle requirements) we experience a complete loss of the transmission. engine would rev while in gear but acted like in neutral. transmission fluid was spewing out from under the vehicle and smoking. we pulled safely to the side of the rode but had to be towed to the next available town. this transmission was equipped with an auxillary transmission cooler. there is only 58,000 miles on the vehicle, less than 30,000 since the last problem. we were informed by the service tech that the transmission would neither drive forward or in reverse and had to be replaced. the transmission was replaced with a ford rebuilt transmission. with in approx. 1-2 months after replacement the service engine light came on and the service tech informed us that it was a transmission code. after resetting the light and waiting for an appointment with the transmission person at the dealership the light did not come back on an the service tech advised to 'wait and see'. in dec. 2002 while driving in the mountains with 4 adults and 3 children in the car not pulling a trailer, the service engine light came on and the transmission was shifting hard and at inappropriate times with varyiing rpms and speeds. after waiting the weekend for the appointment time, the service tech informed us that the solinoid pack in the transmission needed replaced. at this point there is only 8,000miles on the 2nd transmission. the solinoid pack was replaced and currently the vehicle has not had anymore problems.

Started making vibration sounds( thought was road noise). vibration became louder and i took it to trusted mechanic at aamco who told me that the ford car i bought had problems with that particular transmission and that an expensive fluid called merchron 5(very expensive fluid) was to be put into them. this didnot work as my torque convertor needed replacing. the gentleman at aamco called an out of area ford dealer and told them that the mileage was too low and the car to expensive for these kind of troubles. this dealer replaced torque convertor under warranty, but it is doing it again. as you can see, the mileage at which it was first repaired (37000) until now(48000), only means that i will continue to have this problem every 10 or 11k miles. this was my first major problem but in the past, this car has shut down completely, not registered any oil and because it is a southern comfort limited edition model it has a tv-vcr combo that worked for a few months and it went out. i have yet to find a repair person for this problem. ford knew of this transmission problem and tried to cover it up. i do not wish to continue traveling long distances to find an honest ford repair dealership when this car is nothing but a lemon. thank you for your time and any help you might give me. ford is ripping off thousands of consumers( they are on the internet) and they should be stopped and put completely out of business!*ak

On the 5/21/01 accident i was making a left turn off of my cul a sac st and just as i turned the wheel to go left vehicle locked up to the right and i cound not get in to unlock which caused me to hit a parked car, i bounced off the car 3 times before my truck rolloed back and stopped.the police officer tried to turn the wheels with the truck on and was unable to do so, all fluids released from the truck. i was injured in my back/neck/spine, and burn marks on my rt hand from trying to turn the wheel to avoid hitting the car. this accident happened within 15 ft.on the police report it states that the power steering locked up but due to no witnesses he can't prove this. bodyshop said the gear box and all the gears are destroyed and because of it locking up to the right when i was making a left it looks like the power steering locked up also. ford will not comment on my situation and i want to know what to do to protect myself if this is a defect problem. on the transmission, i took it to ford and told them my truck was slipping and having problems and they replaced the transmission and fixed some engine problems. i have so many things go wrong on this vehicle since 1999 i'm afraid to even drive it once it is fixed. im not sure it is safe for me and my family. please advise me if you can or let me know what your process is on this complaint. *ak

At 3000 miles the engine was replaced due to a knock in the engine. at 11,000 miles there was a severe vibration in the drive train at 65 mph with the vechile under load - ford couldn't identify the problem and had no fix. at 12,500 miles the torque converter failed resulting in the vechile stalling at stops. the torque converter and transmission were replaced. this reduced the vibration but did not eliminate it. again ford tried several times but could not identify and correct the problem. at 21,000 miles the vechile lost all power and would only move by reving the engine (like severe clutch slippage on a manual transmission). ford is presently investigating. both failures could have resulted in severe accidents if the driving conditions had been slightly different at the time of the failures. the problem appears to me to be in the computer constrol system for the transmission resulting in possibly the second failre of the transmission.

Bought new car 8/11/99. on 9/27/99 at 2, 284 miles the vehicle started showing signs of transmission failure. the car would not shift into gears properly and would lunge forward. ford replace the control module. they took it for a test drive and it failed immediately. they replaced it with another. the vehicle was finally ready for us to pick up on 10/15/99. three miles away from the dealership, the transmission failed again. we took it back immediately. ford replaced it again and we got our car back on 10/28/99. on 8/7/00 we brought our car back to ford again. the vehicle would lunge forward while stopped, loose power or stall while driving or stopped. took it to ford again. replaced transmission again. vehicle out of service for a total of 36 days in one year and had 4 repair attempts to correct vehicle. no reasonable or safe reason to drive - unsafe.

 1) upon accelerating from a stop, the transmission/transfer case seems to slip and shudder as if the tires are not grabbing the road. this is at all speeds, whether slow or quick starts. also, during high speed acceleration such as when passing on the highway, there is a low pitch growling sound and vibration as if the engine mounts are broken. 2) the front intermittent wipers turn on by themself occasionally, usually just for one sweep then turn back off. 3) the rear automatic load leveling air shocks on one occasion deflated totally after being parked for about 4 hours. the truck chassis was nearly touching the rear tires, i was unable to drive away until they reinflated after starting the vehicle.

The windshield wipers fail to work when needed. on dry days would come on, on wet days do not come on. rear wiper was repaired. now neither works, front or rear. transmission will not shift properly. had it checked & metal pieces had broken off. transmission burnt out. had the piston replaced. the power winddows would go up & down without key insertion.
Transmission is slipping when accelerating at low speeds. dealer states it is normal operation. *ak

When vehicle began to move transmission began to slip. when stopping one can feel the transmission jerking. dealership changed the spark plug and the hose clamp, (2) test drove vehicle, and recognized the slipping, but could not remedy the problem. (3) engineer checked transmission and it was okay. second engineer tested and said it was normal. manufacturer said if brakes fail they would be able to fix them. *ak

Nar 3-11-03 the consumer has experienced several problems with his ford expedition, the side view mirrors have turned back from the inside, the top of the shift handle broke off, and all the tires had to be replaced before a firestone recall had been issued. the consumer feels that the dealership should be responsible for repairs since it's was a manufacturers defect and not a maintenance problem. *cb *jb

Shifter cable broke. shifter was occasionaly difficult to shift out of park when car was new, took it to dealer and because the problem didn't demonstrate itself when the dealer had it, they didn't do anything to remedy. 4 years later (when warranty is out), the cable snaps. the mechanic calls in to order the new cable and there are plenty in stock, i'm told it's a very common problem. if so, why isn't it a recall?*ak

POWER TRAIN - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - PARK/NEUTRAL START SWITCH
09/30/20021
Consumer states while car in park and keys out of ignition a 4 year old child was able to pull the shifter down to low gear causing the truck to roll back. nlm
04/04/200211/01/1999
I drove into the driveway, put the car in park and removed the keys from the ignition. my 2 year old child climbed into the front seat and put the car in neutral. the car rolled down the driveway and hit a van at the bottom. i jumped in as the car was rolling but could not stop the car in time. the car is equipped with a brake shift interlock in which you are not suppose to be able to remove the transmission from park without depressing the brake and having the keys in the ignition and neither happened. a fatality could have occured as children were playing outside as well as i could have been smashed as i jumped in just before my door was torn off. please take note and follow up on this before someone is killed!!!!!*ak

At 65 mph on interstate 90, the electronic shifter did an uncommanded transition from automatic-4-drive to 4-wheel-low. driver managed to maintain control and avoid a crash at largely due to the fact that the incident happened at 11pm under very light traffic conditons. no indication of why was found by the dealer although the computer codes verified the shift transition. dealer indicated that some corrosion was found on the electronic shifter contacts and it was replaced. at the present time, dealer maintains that no damage was done to the engine or drivetrain although loud bangs and metal grinding sounds were heard when the incident occurred. the engine also indicated momentary redlining. the explaination of corrision still indicates a serious control system design flaw whereby an uncommanded operation on the unit operating at highway speeds can force the transition from automatic-4-wheel to 4-wheel-low at cruising speeds. *ak

Again, i am not having to install another torque converter tomorrow. my original complaint to you was for the first torque converter installed while the car was still under warranty. my original complaint has all the necessary information concerning this car. what do i have to do to get some kind of feedback or information from someone that can inform me of my options on seeing that ford is doing something about this?i am stuck with a car that has no trade-in value( word is out on these cars) and cannot afford another automobile without a descent trade-in. i am stuck with this ford lemon....can you not contact me via e-mail and at least let me know that you have received my complaint? i would deeply appreciate it and i would do it for you. no one deserves this trouble and no deserves to lose the time and money i have invested in this automobile. please, please help. thank you. *ak
POWER TRAIN - AXLE ASSEMBLY

Rear axel seal leak caused by wear of axel surface at bearing. vehilce only has 77,000 miles. this required replacement of axel per dealer ($600.) it was stated by mechanic that this is a common problem to expeditions. *ak vehilce has been serviced at or better than mfg specifications. leaking seals could lead to failure of axel or differential due to loss of lubricant

POWER TRAIN - CLUTCH ASSEMBLY
07/15/2001
A loud knuckling sound is often heard when turning at slow speeds. noise comes from the front end and sounds similar to what one hears when the four wheel drive is engaged and during a sharp turn. the vehicle feels like one is driving over softball sized rocks. there also is an increase in engine rpms associated with this. campus ford of okemos, mi diagnosed this as a failure of the clutch assenbly in the four wheel drive. this was replaced but the problem still exists. i'm fearful that something could happen to the wheel assembly while traveling down the highway.*ak
POWER TRAIN - DRIVELINE - DIFFERENTIAL UNIT

A spacer within the differential disintegrated, and caused the differential to shift which resulted in a rear wheel lock up while driving. *ak the unit was completely sealed for no reason. there was noise coming from the rear end and the anti lock brakes activated. as the consumer immediately pulled over, the transmission locked up, and the vehicle started to shake. the carrier bearing was completely destroyed and caused the ring to move away from the pinion gear and destroyed all of the rear axle components. *scc *jb

POWER TRAIN - DRIVELINE - DRIVESHAFT

Vibrating feels like from rr right side, at speeds of 50-60 mph, driveshaft replaced 2 times, fixed slipped yoke 1 time, universal replaced by private garage trying to repair problem and frod dealer paid for repair but this did not solve problem. rear transfer case has begun to leak, fixed once in feb 2002 and currently being fixed again. odometer does not always come on windshield wipers have by themselves, back wiper only when it feels like it. engine has idled rough and has stalled at very low coast (when parking) in both forward and reverse. door ajar switch would not come on or go off when it did go on for length of trip. ignition lock would not lock, and sticks. right front door lock would not unlock. driver window slams when going up. clunking noise when shifting into reverse.ticking engine noise when starting vehicle. most problems have been solved, but not the vibrating in rear end. this has existed from the time we bought the truck, we have been to 2 different dealerships, have been told slipped yoke, driveshaft loose, driveshaft unbalanced, and now the tires had debris in them, in which they had a put on a month prior to it being back in their garage for the vibrating. ford oughta be ashamed of themselves for doing this and causing this kind of stress. i have 3 years left to pay on this vehicle and have been through almost everything with it, now that the warranty is up i get to pay for the same repairs happening over and over again?

POWER TRAIN - TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)
09/01/20056000008/01/2003
*jb

When the car is hot it automatically shifts into 4 wheel drive. ford is aware of the problem and sent an advisory to dealership shops. they advised this is problem and must replace the 4 wheel drive motor which is at a cost of 525.00. then and only then if that doesn't fix it you have to replace 2 other switches which then costs an additional 600-800.00. i would like to find out why this is not considered a recall by ford since this is a very dangerous issue should the 4 wheel drive kick in while driving on the highway the wheels would lock up and all people in the car would be killed. i have file a complaint with ford and they advised there is nothing they can do about it since the car is a 1999. according to our ford dealership this can happen in 1999 through 2002 ford expeditions, explorers and excursions as well as there f series trucks. *jb
