My wife had parked our 1999 expidition for about an hour before noticing smoke and flames coming from under the hood on the passenger side. the car was soon completely engulfed in flames and destroyed. since the engine had been off for a while, i suspect an electrical fire. this vehicle had almost 100k miles and was an eddy bauer version with the self leveling feature. i mention this because approxaimiatly 30 minutes after shutting of the car, a compressor turns on and levels the car, this is normal according to the manual. i suspect that this motor is the cause of the fire. since this fire was outside no-one was hurt, but if this had been in a garage it would have burn't down the house. since this is one of the older vehicles with this feature, there are more potential fires out there. my insurance company has possesion of the car and will destory it in 2 weeks, i would like someone to look at this to identify the cause. i personally have been paid so i have no interest other than preventing other fires. contact me if you are interested and i will get you the insurance contact information. *ak

I was returning from kansas city, mo. to woodbridge, va., traveling on i-70e at the 51 mm in indiana. my vehicle was set on cruise just under 70 mph. (69 mph approx.) suddenly i felt a vibration and sound that resembled driving over rumble strips! there also was immediate vibration in the steering, though no loss of control. i was driving in the slow lane (#2), so i gently applied brakes and moved to the shoulder of the road and stopped. my passenger side front tire had completely come apart. the tread had separated from the casing, and the sidewall was chewed up, exposing the white plys underneath! when the tire was removed and inspected at the garage that towed me, a tear, that went from the rim straight out to where the casing meets the tread was found. there were no foreign objects or bubbles in the tire, nor had i run over anything, and there was no damage to the rim. the tire had about 90% tread on it .this vehicle had just received a maintenance check and servicing at a ford dealership in pittsburgh, penna. on 10aug02. this was a multi point insp.(including tire rotation) i was told that all tires, brakes, etc. were in very good condition, requiring no maintenence beyond fluid and filter changes that were being done at that time. basically, i don't know what caused the tire to throw the tread, (separate). i do know that the vehicle was checked by the manufacturer's dealership, and based on the information that i have supplied, and the recent problems with firestone, and now continenetal tires, my wife, who was with me, as well as myself are extremely concerned about our safety when traveling at highway speeds, as we often make out of state trips. i will be taking the tire to my local dealership tomorrow 8/26/02, for their evaluation.*ak

When traveling between 40 & 50 mph, there is a vibration throughout the vehicle. this vibration is distinct in the floorboards. the first time it was taken in for the problem, the mechanic stated it was a tire pressure problem & the pressure was adjusted. the second time, only a couple weeks later was for the same problem. this time the mechanic stated that he could not varify concern. however, when vehicle was picked up, a female service writer went for a ride with me and she noticed the problem. on the 3rd incident, a mechanic who was doing a state safety inspection noticed the vibration and strongley advised me to have the vehicle repaired. i have been in touch with ford motor co. and they stated that another dealership would call to make an appt.. this has never taken place. i am concerned for the safety of my children and wife as well as myself.*ak( dot number: vncu tire size: p255/70r16 )

This vehicle has been back to dealership seven times since purchase for warranty service problems and recalls. in may of 99 there was a recall on the wheel lugs: nuts. in september 99, november 99, and march 2000 it was in for windshield wiper problems; moulding replacement; twice for front end alignments (steers to right); and trailer hitch recall. the constant smelll of burning oil has just been diagnosed on latest visit to dealership 5/15/00 as needing a new cylinder head. vehicle has been in on three other occasions for this same problem, but they could never find it. now parts are on order---will take 3-4 days to obtain parts before they can repair it. regarding the windnoise dealer says its normal yet service bulletins have been issued on this problem (996780 & tsb 99-6-5). in november of 1999, the left tie rod broke off while we were in phoenix. a phoenix dealership did a same day repair for us. *ak

I almost flipped my wife's 1999 ford expedition on christmas evening (yesterday) when both stabilizer bar links sheared off. my family, including four children, were in the car. we were proceeding on a rural road at the posted speed limit when the handling went out and the vehicle started drifting all over the road. anything over 40 mph became unsafe around turns. it cost me $84 to replace the parts today (self-installed). it could have killed my family. i want ford to reimburse me for the parts and i want them to investigate whether a recall would be prudent. i owned two 1995 explorers and both were recalled for this defect (which is the only reason i knew to look for it). i am a licensed attorney. notice of a defect gives rise to negligence. not only does a quality and safety issue like this one damage ford's reputation, economically it less expensive to replace the parts than to wait for the fatalities to materialize as these vehicles age. i want ford to reimburse me for the parts and investigate the issue or i will never buy another ford product again. ford, do the right thing here. *jb
