Every month i check my tire pressure. in checking the tire pressure on april 6th, i noticed that on all four tires, there was a splitting/crack which ran about three-quarters of an inch from right to left right under the tread knuckle where the knuckle of the tread would happen to meet the sidewall of the tire. i immediately called the service manager at my ford garage which is venus ford in cudahy, wisc. he told me over the phone that i would have to contact an authorized firestone dealer. i contact muskego firestone in muskego, wi. they inspected the tires and i was told that all four tires were unsafe. after i asked the owner (keith) how safe the tires actually were,he told me if those tires were on my vehicle, they'd be coming off. keith contacted firestone. firestone would not replace the tires free of charge i guess in doing this they would not admit to any default with the tire or with theie workmanship. the only thing firestone would do for me was to replace all four tires under a pro-rating system. don't get me wrong, the tires were wearing like iron and for having 34,600 miles on them, the actual tread wear looked like the tires only had 10,000 miles on them. the depth of the tires were measured by the firestone dealer and all four tires came in at 10/32. the tires before coming off of my vehicle were documented by the firestone dealer on some form which i had to sign. on this form, the serial numbers of all four tires were listed and the their actual position on the vehicle. the replacement tires firestone provided were again their wilderness at's and same size. my cost which included labor and tax came out to about $50.00 per tire. after seeing the splits/cracks in the tires i wanted these tires removed because it was my concern that there was definitely a safety issue here. especially with a family and this family vehicle going to be used very shortly for two separte family vacations.*ak (tiresize: 265/70r17)

I experienced a tire blow out (left rear) wilderness at (p255/70r16) on a '99 expedition going approximately 55 mph. the outside sidewall came apart, completely separating from the rest of the tire. there is an area on the tire that had cracks on the tread close to the main part of the tire. i took the car to my ford dealer in grapevine first because they had just inspected the tires for me approximately 3 weeks ago. they recommended highly that i take the tire to firestone, that the only thing they could do for me was to sell me 5 new tires, costing more than $700 total. i then took the car to my firestone dealer where after i pointed out to my technician the damage, he tried to expain to me that a blow out is normal whenever there is damage to a tire and that the tire had been driven with low air pressure which is why the sidewall was torn up. i tried to explain that the tires have never been low on pressure, that i check them myself at a minimun of 1 time per week and never drive the vehicle until i have checked them, and ford checks them approximately every 3,000 miles and rotates them according to specs. he was not interested. i asked if my other 3 tires were safe in his opinion and without doing more than a quick glance said they are as safe as any tire. i asked him again and explained that i have a 5 year old and all i wanted was to ensure the vehicle was safe, he stated that i would be more uncomfortable about driving a ford than i would be about your tires. this is completely unacceptable to me and i feel that attitudes and reactions like this to an obviously realistic concern is criminal. i also asked them to return the damaged tire to me, which i had to remind them to do. i then took the car & tire to national tire and battery (whom i trust) and asked for their opinion on the tire. *ak (dot number: vncu1rd458 tiresize: p255/70r16)

The problem that i am having is the dealership inflates my tires improperly during service. the drivers door reads that the cold pressure for the front should be 30 and the rear 35. i have been having this problem for several months and have been getting my tires serviced for free because no one wants to address the problem. they contend my tire gauge is wrong. once i had them check them before i left the dealership and they had to let pressure out. all i would ask is that the situation be addressed before someone who does not check their tires when they leave the dealership is in a accident and hurt. thank you in advance for your help.*ak( dot number: )

From the first day of ownership of our 1999 ford expedition -- we had difficulty with the factory equipped 17 inch wilderness at tires pulling to either side of the road while driving strait ahead at any speed. we proceeded with a lemon law complaint with massachusetts attorney general. at least 3 front end aliegnments were unsuccessful in fixing the problem. a ford motor company engineer said the 17 inch tires were inherently unstable and nothing could be done to improve the pulling of tires. our own mechanic detuned the front end aliegnment with in factory specifiations and this allowed the vehicle to be driven. the only problem was increase tire wear. we have replaced at approx 16,000 miles all five wilderness at tires with goodyear tires and do not appear to have th same stearing problems.  Tires have had a problem with maintaining balance and have required being re-balanced and rotated every 500 to 1500 miles. i had the tires inspected by national tire and battery, they dismounted the tires, checked for roundness, indexed the tires and remounted them, added additional weights to front and rear of tires. they said the tires were defective and should be replaced by the manufacturer. i took the suv and the inspection report to several firestone dealers, one barely looked at the tires and quoted me a price of $128.00 per tire to replace them with the same size and brand, no consideration was given to them being defective or coverd by pro-rata warranty. another dealer said that he didn't need to inspect the tires they were not covered by the manufacturers warranty after 12,000 miles and that there was no such thing as an out of round tire. i have tried to seek relief from firestone, who finally sent an email suggesting that i have the tires inspected by their dealers, even after i had informed them of the lack of interest displayed by their dealers in atlanta. i rec'd the same verbage that they released to the press concerning the recalled tires and i advised them that i wasn't seeking information on the recalled tires, since, my size wasn't included, that i was seeking relief for a defective product. these tires are becoming unsafe at any speed and they should be recalled with the other sizes by ford and/or firestone. i have seen the listed complaints that your group has rec'd concerning these tires and i request your assistance in my problem..the problem with my 2 outside mirrors on my suv is that the silver reflective coating is peeling and flaking off the mirrors and your visibility to either side is greatly hampered. i had shown this to my dealer banner ford and i had spoken to the service manager at peachtree ford, they both said that there was a problem with the mirrors and that they had replaced them on several occasions. ...thanks.

In less than 14 months, i had 2 flats while driving at moderate speeds, once on a gravel road, and once on the freeway. i would expect at tires to hold up better than this. the tires did not seperate as the recalled ones have, but they just gave out/lost air. interestingly, a friend of mine bought the same car at the same time, and he has also experienced 2 flats in the same time. since these tires are labeled all terain i would expect them to hold up better, especially driving on the highway, or flat gravel road at moderate speeds. i feel these tires should be on the recall list also. *ak( dot number: tire size: p265170r17 )

Tire had complete failure (blowout) on interstate 95 at 70 mph at approximately 0700 on may 16th, 2000. was able to keep control and return to outside emergency lane and replace with the spare. the spare also has four serious indentations in the sidewall and i do not consider safe to use.i went to a tire kingdom store the next day and purchased 4 new michelin tires and had the spare replaced under the vehicle. this was before a recall was announced and i did not keep the blown tire.*ak( dot number: 109s tire size: p255/70r16 )

(sent to firestone and ford) dear sirs: we own a 1999 ford expedition with wilderness at, white letter, size p255/70r16 tires. today, the vehicle has 22,000 miles on it. last year, as we approached about 9,000 miles on the vehicle, we noticed excessive vibration especially on the highway. we had the tires balanced -- first at a retail tire store. this did not resolve the problem. we then took the vehicle to be serviced at a ford dealership where the tires were again balanced. the vibration continued even after ford performed their own balancing. it seems these tires could not and cannot be properly balanced. the situation has worsened over time where even at lower around town speeds, the vibration is readily evident. there are also noticeable cracks in the treads; it almost looks like dry rot! the air pressure in the tires have been meticulously monitored in order to maximize our gas mileage; so we know air pressure is not the culprit. as parents of two small children, one 5 year old boy and a 2 year old girl, we now fear for our family's safety after seeing what happens with these tires. what do you intend to do to resolve this situation? we will appreciate your prompt response, anita j. and walter l. hilliard, jr.( dot number: w2cu tire size: p255/70r16 )

I am submitting this because of the recent controversy surrounding the 15 inch version of this tire. my 17 tire experienced an enxplained complete separation of the exterior sidewall from the tread portion of the tire at 2000 miles, but the vehicle ( a ford expedition) handled it smoothly. i never thought to complain because there was no damage other than the tire, and when the local firestone dealer saw it, he replaced it for free, no questions asked. it is my belief that the reason that there is so much focus on the 15 inch version of this tire is that the vehicles on which it is installed (the ford explorer) are less stable and more likely to result in a crash in this type of failure.( dot number: tire size: 17 inch )

I currently own a 1999 ford expedition. it was equipped from the factory with firestone wilderness at tires. in light of the various news releases that have come out, i am very concerned for the safety of myself, my wife, and my six month old son when traveling in our expedition. i have not yet had a failure, and i understand that my size tires are not included in the stated recall, however, that doesn't ease my concern in the least. there are far greater numbers of ford explorers on the road with 15 tires than expeditions with 17 hence the heightened number of complaints. i have to wonder if my family has to become one of the statistics before the particular size of tire i have becomes included in a recall. it seems to me that if it's the same model of tire, then the same, or at least very similar, production processes are used. in short, i have no confidence in the tires on my vehicle. i have sent this same letter to firestone already and the only response has been a copy of a statement the company had already released.( dot number: tire size: 265/70/17 )

I would like to forward a copy of the e-mail that i sent to firestone three weeks ago but i am unable to paste that letter into this box. if you could give me the appropriate e-mail address and whatever reference number would tie my letter to this form i'll send a copy. the short version is that the tire that my dealer installed on my truck to replace one that they had destroyed failed after 600 miles. there was a major deformation on the inside sidewall that pushed the bead away from the rim and allowed all the air out. i would have dismissed it as an isolated manufacturing defect but read the next day about the major problems associated with firestone tires and became more concerned - i wrote firestone and they seem to have decided that the best thing for them to do is to ignore me - (i do realize that they have their hands full now so maybe i'm somewhere on a very long list) - in any case i'm registering the problem with you folks. i'd be happy to forward a copy of the letter if you will let me know where to send it.( dot number: unknown tire size: p255/70r16 )

When drivin on smooth (public) gravel road, gravel perforated the tread package, and the steel belts, causing damage that was determined to be nearly unrepairable. when removed from the rim, the tire is so flimsy that it can be easily deformed with minimal hand pressure. these original equipment tires appear to be so flimsy that they should not carry an all terrain rating, and i believe that they are not suitable equipment for a vehicle of this size.( dot number: tire size: p255/70r16 )

Car purchased new. request change of tires. ford claims no problem with tires. at 3000 miles rotate and check alignment due to unusual wear. alignment checks ok. rotate tires every 3-4000 miles and maintain tire pressure. at 22000 miles ford claims tires are unsafe and need replacing due to visible chord and pitting. tires replaced and alignment checked. alignment checks ok. therefore, not alignment, not pressure so what is the problem. the following week it is all in the news. ford and firestone have been contacted and neither will take responsibility.( dot number: w2t6ire119 tire size: p265/70/17 )

After having the car for only three days, we were traveling 60 mph on a highway when the left rear tire disintegrated - no steering or control problems occurred and we were able to pull over and put on the spare. we returned home and took the car to the ford dealer where we purchased the vehicle three days prior and they at first refused to cover the cost of replacing the tire. after much debate and reluctance on their part (this never happens, you must have hit a nail) - we argued that there was no way the tire should have blown after only being drive on for less than 300 miles and that we did not hit anything we were aware of (their inspection of the tire also yielded no punctures that they could find). ford finally agreed to pay for a new wilderness tire and it was replaced. we are reporting this so that you know this happened over one year ago on a virually brand new tire.( dot number: vncu tire size: 16 )

Tires: had a blowout on the highway in april of this year. i went to the nearest firestone dealer. he inspected the tire and reported that it was defective and not repairable, so i bought a new one. ever since this happened, the vehicle vibrated terribly at highway speeds. reported (3times) to dealership since april. each report is documented. allegedly fixed each time. finally on 8/04/00 the tire was declared defective by the dealership and was replaced.(i have documentation/receipts on all work). problem is that the truck still vibrates at highway speeds although at lower mph than previously reported. air conditioning: first reported strong moldy odor back in jan 1999. was told by ford service rep. that it was due to the truck's having been idle in the hot sun/parking lot prior to my purchasing it. i was told that it would dissipate in time. it did not. i brought it in three times since then. each time i asked that the cause be fixed and not just the symptoms. on the 4th visit, i involved the owner and his dealership hired an outside company to remove the mold from the system. they claimed to have done so but during the cleaning process they added a chemical/perfume that is so strong, one cannot tell if the actual problem is still present or not. i was told (by the service rep) the owner was so offended by this smell that he had the company come back out & redo the truck to remove the added chemical. they were unsuccessful as it smells very strong even today (2 weeks later). my concern is as follows; if they removed the mold and smell then why would they need to add a chemical/perfume? i believe that they added this chemical to mask the fact that the mold is still present. i think that all they were able to do was overpower the stench of mold by adding this fragrance. i want the cause of the problem fixed, not just the symptoms. having mold spores blown into my face is a risk to my health and is of serious concern to all. my truck is not the only one.

My ford expedition was outfitted a little over 3 years ago with goodyear wranglers by ford due to the firestone tire failure. recently, while washing the vehicle i noticed failure in the sidewall of the driver's side rear tire. all around the rim approximately 1/2 to 3/4 from the rim there are cracks in the rubber sidewall opening up as the earth does during an earthquake. these are approximately 2-3 long and a little over 1/8 deep so far. this is highly unusual for three year old tires. these will be removed before the next long trip as i will not wait for failure and put my or my family in danger. *jb

Recently i went to the body shop to get a rotation. but when i went, the mechanic told me that all my four tires had severe sidewall cracks. the mechanic told me that if i had driven the expedition over 65 mph the tires may have torn off from the rims and flipped my car over. as a matter of fact, the mechanic told me that my problem with the tires is exactly the same as the problem people are having with the firestone tires. to get a second opinion i went down to a privately owned goodyear shop; the manager, after inspecting one of the tires, which all had the same problem, told me that the tires had defects in them and that we should immediately call the goodyear hotline. he also happened to agree that the tires would eventually rip off and flip the car if i did not change them. hence i called the goodyear hotline, when the representative picked up, she told me that the man from goodyear who inspected the tires was not qualified to give an inspection. so then, i drove to another shop named !0just tires!1 that was licensed from goodyear to give inspections. after inspecting the tires, the manager agreed there was a defect in the tires and that if the tires were not immediately replaced i would be endangering my life. he too believed that my tires had similar problems to those of firestone.i have also had another problem with the expedition. when i first bought the car, the side view mirror was stolen; and under the warranty, we were able to replace it. however, after a few months, the newly installed mirror started became somewhat unreliable. it accumulated scratches easily and was very fragile. the visuals the mirror gave were very dull and vague. hence when we went to the dealership for another replacement, the representative told us that the mirror was no longer covered under the warranty; and so i was not given a replacement. *ak (dot number: pdcud3er33 tiresize: p255/70r16)

In aug, 99, i was driving my 1999 ford expedition on interstate 80 between auburn, california and lake tahoe, when my wife and 3 children heard a loud noise, and the vehicle began swerving all over the freeway. after the noise, my kids looked back and saw what they described as smoke and debris flying behind the car. fortunately, i was able to steer the vehicle to the shoulder of the road without an accident. i got everyone out of the car and we called the auto club on our cell phone to come fix the flat. i looked at the flat tire, and i was very surprised to see the nature of the flat. the tire sidewall was totally disintegrated, but the tire tread remained is one round piece. i jacked up the car and removed the wheel, and the separated tread that surrounded the aluminum wheel. i looked closely at the separated tread, expecting to see a nail or some other evidence of a puncture. there wasnt any puncture or hole in the tread. i thought that was very unusual so i took some photos right there. then i changed the tire and put the wheel and separated tread in my car. the auto club tow truck arrived just as i was completing the change. the day after the incident, i went to a firestone dealer in roseville, california and brought the wheel and the separated tread. i was pretty upset and requested a free replacement because it appeared to me to be a defective tire. however, the man at the firestone dealership said it was road hazard and that warranty did not apply. i commented to my son afterwards that he seemed almost pre-programmed for that response. i wasnt happy with their attitude at firestone so i went to the closest ford dealership. they were nicer about it, and agreed that it looked like a tire problem, but they said ford doesnt warrant tires on new cars. i ended up just buying a replacement wilderness at in redding the next day because that was our vacation destination. when we returned home about one week later, my wife wrote a letter to firestone, but we

TIRES - TEMPORARY/EMERGENCY SPARE TIRE
11/14/20091020001
The flared portion of the terminator fob on the retaining/retracting cable for the spare tire fractured and separated on my 1999 ford expedition eddie bauer (i am the original owner). *tr as a result, the spare tire and the metal crosspiece retainer dropped onto the street pavement, and in front of oncoming vehicles, which swerved and avoided colliding with the loose spare tire. i am just glad, and fortunate, that the spare tire did not bounce into the air, or end up crashing through the windshield of an oncoming vehicle. there are numerous reports of similar, if not identical incidents of this spare tire cable breakage posted on the internet. according to the owners manual, the crank mechanism is driven using the jack handle, and it is supposed to ratchet when the spare tire becomes snug against the vehicle undercarriage, preventing over tension on the crank mechanism and cable. upon inspection, there were no signs of rust, or corrosion, or attempted theft or tampering. a small collar portion of the terminator fob remained on the cable, while flared portion broke and slipped off of the end of the cable. there are not any additional safety devices on the vehicle that retain the spare tire in the event the cable fails. during the 2001 firestone tire recall, the dealer replaced all five tires, which included the spare tire. otherwise, the crank mechanism has not been used. i searched but failed to find a reported government recall of this cable at http://www.recalls.gov/search.html. to repair the cable end, i created my own terminator fob using an electrical split-bolt sized to the diameter of the cable. i fashioned a j shape in the cable to form a loop and placed a small screw through the loop to prevent pull-through, added a few drops of blue locktite to the threads of the split-bolt, and cinched up the split-bolt. *tr

I own a 1999 ford expedition. i was driving home when i heard a bump in the back of my vehicle. i looked in the rear view mirror to see my spare tire bouncing off another vehicle and rolling down the street. if i had been going at a faster rate of speed, someone could have been seriously injured if not killed. i stopped to retrieve the tire when i noticed that the cable holding the tire had just snapped. after a little research on the internet i have discovered that this is not an isolated incident. when i called the dealer to see if there had been a recall they said there had not, but they could sell me a replacement for $78. this is not just about money, it's about a known problem that ford needs to fix. as i said before, someone can be seriously injured by this problem. can you look into this problem? thanks. *ak

Recent firestone tire recall only covers 15 wilderness at tires. i had a tire loose pressure/flat at approximately 55 mph. the tires came on my newly purchased 1999 expedition. with only 3900 miles, the tire was destroyed, including the sidewall from slowing the vehicle to a stop after the flat. i did not inspect the tire, i was just told by the ford dealer that replaced it that they would inspect the tire and replace it if recommended. the only documentation i have regarding the replacement is a note by the dealer/service that there was a puncture to the sidewall. the sidewall puncture did not cause the flat. the sidewall damage was due to the tire failure at the high rate of speed. the ford dealer would not replace the tire under warranty with only 3900 miles. now that the firestone recall is in force, 16 tires are not included. should they be? had i known about the problems, or the recall would have been in place, i would have inspected the tire, or even kept the tire for further inspection for my complaint. my family was on vacation when the tire failure occured, i check my tire pressure regulary and it was at the recommended manufactures specs (35psi). should these tires be included in the recall? i am taking my family on another vacation in 5 weeks. we will be driving 4000-5000 miles on these tires. i will do my part by continuing to inspect and check tire pressure. please keep firestone honest and if the 16 wilderness tires should be included, i would like to know before our family vacation. thanks for your investigation and all your efforts. steve sandquist. *ak( dot number: tire size: p255/70r16 )

Defects to our oem tires on our new expedition, similar to those described in the media. in mid0august, after only having our truck four months and with only 2500 miles on it, the front left side tire's belts began to separate from the tire. firestone replaced. four months later, rear right tire began to go flat after heating up, firestone took over a month of testing on the tire on the tire and refused to replace it even though we returned it four times due to these flats. finalyy, after a month of complaints, they reluctantly replaced the second tire. two defective tires in less than eight months of the vehicle being new and they reported no complaints about the tire. i notified firestone and ford of my concerns on 8/28/99 after the first defect and have all documentation.( dot number: tire size: 255-70-16 )

On a clear open road, highway 15, our tire blew out. fortunately i was able to control the car. first we heard a loud noise, then smoke from the rear of car, then the car became very difficult to control. since the car was almost new we took the tire to gaudin ford in las vegas to complain about the tire. we were told that it had to be a road hazard and that we would need to buy a new tire, which we did. on our local news they have had several stories about the same tires blowing out the same way, but unfortuneatly for them, these people were killed. i think the tires are unsafe. *ak( dot number: )

After reading the reports in the newspaper about the ford explorers and the trouble with the firestone wilderness tires, it occurred to me that i may be experiencing some type of trouble. every night on the way home from work, i hit a stretch of highway with a few small pot holes and cracks in it. when i hit the holes, the steering wheel wretches from my hands very hard and it feels like i am losing control of the vehicle. this also happens if i have to make a sharp turn at speeds over 60 mph. i contacting the car dealer and they where not very compassionate and said that it was not thier problem ( just what i want to hear ) . so, i want this on record in case i do have a problem with the tires and become a statistic. please keep me posted on this investigation if pssible. thank you. *ak( dot number: tire size: p255/70r16 )
