My son exited the publix grocery store where he was working and found that our 1999 ford expedition was on fire with no one in the vehicle with the keys in his pocket. the flames were coming from the engine department. four small fire extinguishers were not able to extinguish the fire, the fire department was called. the vehicle was destroyed, as well as damage to the two vehicles parked on either side. we were having no mechanical trouble with the vehicle at all, in fact, we had just replaced the four tires the day before. there was a recall on the vehicle regarding the cruise control, which we had complied with by immediately taking the vehicle to our local ford dealership for the recall, where it was taken care of. supposedly the problem of unexpected fires was corrected. fortunately there were no injuries or fatalities that occurred as a result of this incident. thank goodness the vehicle was not parked in our garage when this fire occurred. it has caused us a great deal of unneeded aggravation, time and unavailable costs involved in accommodating our son's responsibility to get to and from work, along with our own responsibilities. *tr

I was returning from kansas city, mo. to woodbridge, va., traveling on i-70e at the 51 mm in indiana. my vehicle was set on cruise just under 70 mph. (69 mph approx.) suddenly i felt a vibration and sound that resembled driving over rumble strips! there also was immediate vibration in the steering, though no loss of control. i was driving in the slow lane (#2), so i gently applied brakes and moved to the shoulder of the road and stopped. my passenger side front tire had completely come apart. the tread had separated from the casing, and the sidewall was chewed up, exposing the white plys underneath! when the tire was removed and inspected at the garage that towed me, a tear, that went from the rim straight out to where the casing meets the tread was found. there were no foreign objects or bubbles in the tire, nor had i run over anything, and there was no damage to the rim. the tire had about 90% tread on it .this vehicle had just received a maintenance check and servicing at a ford dealership in pittsburgh, penna. on 10aug02. this was a multi point insp.(including tire rotation) i was told that all tires, brakes, etc. were in very good condition, requiring no maintenence beyond fluid and filter changes that were being done at that time. basically, i don't know what caused the tire to throw the tread, (separate). i do know that the vehicle was checked by the manufacturer's dealership, and based on the information that i have supplied, and the recent problems with firestone, and now continenetal tires, my wife, who was with me, as well as myself are extremely concerned about our safety when traveling at highway speeds, as we often make out of state trips. i will be taking the tire to my local dealership tomorrow 8/26/02, for their evaluation.*ak

A loud knuckling sound is often heard when turning at slow speeds. noise comes from the front end and sounds similar to what one hears when the four wheel drive is engaged and during a sharp turn. the vehicle feels like one is driving over softball sized rocks. there also is an increase in engine rpms associated with this. campus ford of okemos, mi diagnosed this as a failure of the clutch assenbly in the four wheel drive. this was replaced but the problem still exists. i'm fearful that something could happen to the wheel assembly while traveling down the highway.*ak

On 4/4/07, at about 1:15 am my husband had just gotten home from a long day at work and at 1:30 am 2 passengers banged on door to inform us that 1999 ford expedition was on fire. thanks to them, we were able to get my family, including my 3 kids, and my mom and dad , who was on oxygen 24 hours a day), out of the house. we called 911 to inform them of the fire. the police came within minutes , and then the fire department arrived a few minutes afterwards to put the fire out. we watched from our neighbor's house across the street as the fire burned. we were grateful that it wasn't any worst. the engine in the truck was all burnt, the hood was gone, some of the pieces even burnt onto the pavement in the driveway. the whole inside of the truck was burnt, including the car seats for the children. my daughter's softball equipment, and any other items left in car. as for the house, luckily, the fire department put the fire out in time and the wind was blowing north east. the only damage to the house was the siding since the truck was parked on the east side of the house. we were able to get the value of the truck in fair condition, according to the insurance company. also, we a had the siding of the house fixed. we were still trying to clean up the pavement in the driveway. like i said, we were grateful for what didn't happen, but i was very unhappy with the truck. we received the recall notice in 2005 and did make the appointment to fix it as soon as we knew about it. we even parked the truck in front of the house until we had it fixed by ford. it is 2007 and ford still didn't get the part in to fix the recall, and this still happened. recalls like this should be taken seriously, and vehicle should be pulled off the street until the part came in. ford should have done something further to avoid this from happening 2 years after it was temporarily fixed.*ak
