Odi has received 39 reports alleging that water leaks around the windshield causing electrical failures, including but not limited to the windshield wipers and the headlamps.ford reports that water entering the vehicle can wet the power distribution box (pdb) and the generic electronic module (gem).these components control various electrical systems in the vehicle.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis, ea05015, to allow further investigation of the issue and to assess the nature of the potential safety consequence.
EA05015FORD MOTOR COMPANY10/13/200512/06/2006WINDSHIELD LEAK CAUSES ELECTRIC FAILURES
Consumers alleged that when it rained or snowed, water leaked into the vehicle around the windshield.moisture flowing through the seal that surrounds the front windshield follows a path through the seal into the generic electronic module (gem) and fuse box, and may cause the electrical components in the vehicle to malfunction.overall, the number of reports alleging wiper failures and lighting failures is relatively small.in reviewing a large sample of the 1503 complaints for windshield leaks, odi's analysis reveals that 0.04% of the total vehicle population reported improper windshield wiper operation and 0.01% of the total vehicle populationreported lighting failures.the warranty claims reveal that approximately 0.10% of the population has been serviced for wiper malfunctions and 0.08% for lighting malfunctions as a result of windshield leaking. odi's analysis of the field performance statistics and available technical information has not established that a defect trend exists in the malfunction, failure or intermittent operation of the front windshield wipers or headlights.see the attached summary report.

I was reutrning home from a family trip going the posted interstate speed limit of 65 mph when i heard a loud popping noise that sounded like a major leak had just occured. when i pulled over to check out the problem i discovered the rear spark plug on the passenger side had ejected itself destroying the threads that hold it in the cylinder head and also destroying the heli coil pack that sits on top of the spark plug. i have never filed a complaint or safety report on any vehicle i have owned. this time the only reason i am filing a report is due to the frequency this problem seems to have on ford triton motors. it seems excessive and upon very little investigating on my part i have found that every person i have talked to about it either owns a vehicle with the said motors in them and have experienced this problem on multiple occasions, or is someone who knows a person who has experienced this issue. i am a dedicated and loyal ford owner and alsways will be, however i also believe that when a problem occurs with such frequency that they should be required to step up and make good on issues that clearly have been going on for well over a decade at this point in time.

Vehicle sitting in driveway after 2 days of rain. went to start up vehicle and battery dead. took battery out to be tested and tested fine. spent $165 on alternator replacement. vehicle dead again next morning. charged battery started vehicle up. noticed water in floorboards and headliner. when key was removed from ignition, radio was still on and door would still ding as if key in ignition. battery dead again several hours later. after doing research, was extremely frustrated to learn the issue is very well documented with improperly sealed windshields. rather than ford paying to reseal or inform consumers to fix out of their own pockets, they allowed consumers to experience dreadful electrical malfunctions with vehicle. without going to mechanic, i removed both the gem module and fuse box. put fax in vehicle to speed up the drying process. allowed fuse box to sit inside for a week and ordered a gem module off the internet. cleaned corrosion from fuse box/gem connectors and replaced gem module. vehicle performs much better. things that haven't worked in years (auto locks) now work. however, radio loses power intermittently which is frustrating. i own 2 fords and am a very very disappointed consumer that something that could have been fixed for $100 have cost loyal consumers thousands. *tr

After a moderate rain, while driving on the highway, the wipers, defroster and windows stopped working and the radio began blinking in and out. since this incident, it seems that after any rain, the electrical system goes crazy, i hear relays clicking under the dash, things don't work when turned on, or do work with them turned off. several times the blower for the heat would keep or turn on after i shut the truck off. absolutely a safety hazard that should be recalled if this is that common a problem. > also my mechanic said it will cost upwards of $1000 to fix this problem and not guaranteed not to happen again. *tr

The 2000 expedition eddie bauer was purchased with 117,208 miles from ron marhaufer aotomall inc in the year 2011. in the last six months i have experienced numerous electrical issues with this vehicle. i have spent over $1000.00 dollars replacing numerous parts ex: two electrical coils and a alternator. the vehicle will run ok, i noticed that if i drive and stop and park two too three times, the auto will not start right away. i have to continually take the car out of gear and return the gear shifter to park. the auto will then start. i also noticed that the dash lights will illuminate to bright on their own while driving. i am concerned that the ford motor company is aware of these issues and have failed to recall all affected vehicles. i have seen many complaints fro the same reason. what is the solution?

Multiple instances following rain of: vehicle turns over but will not start. removing the key any of the following will occur- heater fan blower comes on and will only go off with the key in and in the on position. lights may or may not come on. radio may or may not come on. all this with key out, vehicle empty and closed. sometimes blower will come on in empty vehicle. if the car starts sometimes the wipers will not work, the horn will not work, radio will not work, lights will not work or blinkers go on. any or all of this may occur. sometimes and oder like burning or sour gas will occur. if the rain quits and the vehicle sits for minutes to hours all these symptoms go away. i have pulled the lower kicker panel on the drivers side and found evidence of water below the gem near the edge of the carpet. i believe this to be the problem reported by many as the water entering from the windshield and shorting at the gem fuse connection. i am contacting the dealer, if they will not take care of it i will have a windshield replacement company try to reseal and examine for leaks. this appears to be potenially dangerous if engine would die while driving, light go out or wipers stop working.

I went approx. 3 miles when smoke started to come out of the heating vents in my 2000 ford expedition. a few sec. after the truck began to smoke flames were starting to come out of the area by the drivers side feet. under the dash. my husband put out the fire and sustained severe 2nd degree burns on his fore arm hand wrist and chin. he was able to see the fire started by corroded wires under the kick plate. all the wires have melted and now 4x4 isn't working windows are not working lights inside of truck stay on headlights stay on no tail lights no dash lights power windows and door locks no longer work, speaker on driver side does not work. hazzard lights do not blink they just stay on. temp in the truck reads 140 deg. f. we have not yet had this looked at. i have an appt with a ford garage on monday to see if this was a recall issue.

We bought this vehicle in february 2010 it ran perfectly until we got the first snow of the year and then we started having major electrical problems. it started out just the warning lights would blink, then the radio would shut off in drive but come back on in park. then the wipers would no longer work or the headlights! so we parked it for about a month, the second day the radio and heater came on without the keys even being in the vehicle so we had to disconnect the battery! we let it sit with the battery disconnected for awhile then tried it again. the suv ran great for about 8 weeks then it snowed again and it suddenly started trying to start itself and we do not have remote start!!! now it does it every time you shift, start it, or whenever it is parked it just starts cranking away!! i now have smoke coming from somewhere behind the fuse box! the fuses are all good and i can't see any problem with the wiring... i have talked to several people who have had these exact same issues with this model of expedition and none of them have been able to figure out what the problem is even after spending thousands of dollars... and ford is refusing to issue a recall... so what are we to do as consumers when we are assured the vehicles we buy are safe and they turn out to be the exact opposite!!!!

Sypmtom was a dead battery. courtesy lights would not go off. hard failure. root cause was leaking windshield seal which corroded electronics. according to the ford service bulletin this was first discovered well within the factory warranty period of the vehicle. an online search found numerous similar complaints along with a ford service bulletin ford special message #15773. repairs to my vehicle included removing and replacing gem and cjb along with resealing the windshield. i purchased the vehcile new in april 2000 and it has never been in an accident. repair cost was over $1400 for a latent defect that has been in the vehicle since it was built.

Tl-the contact owns a 2000 ford expedition. while driving approximately 10 mph during rainy weather condition everything in the vehicle electrical goes on and off, radio, heater, instrument cluster etc. the failure happens in rainy and snowy weather conditions and the doors lock when the failure occurs and a passenger would be unable to get out of the vehicle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer by the insurance company because they thought the vehicle had been struck by lightening. the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. she also stated that water leaks into the vehicle through the driver's side window. the failure happen again in snowy weather conditions. she stated she had to jump the vehicle because the battery was dead. a friend changed the started solenoid as he changed this the vehicle started with the keys in her hand. the vehicle had not been taken to a dealer for the failure. the failure mileage was 85,000 and the current mileage was 98,000. vwb

I have a 2000 ford expedition. there are many elelctrical issues with this car. i understand that it is due to water and moisture getting into the gem. the biggest issue from this is the child safety door locks do not engage sometimes. i have two small children that ride in the back and this is a huge safety issue that i feel should be recalled before a serious (or even fatal) accident occurs. the gem can be replaced but this continues to happen as long as the moisture can drain into it. we have been battling this problem for years with no results.

I own a 2000 ford expedition. i am have continuing electrical problems. initially, about 1 month after purchasing my vehicle, whenever it rained my electrical system would go haywire. the 4x4 lights would blink on and several other warnings lights including a clicking noise. i would take my key out of the ignition and the blower motor would continue to blow without the key in. when driving the radio, odometer and clock would go on and off at random times. i was told the windshield was leaking into the gem module and fuse box and i had to have a new windshield put in as well as the gem module replaced. i did this and the truck was okay for a few months. more electrical problems involving the abs light on the dash, the 4x4 light, the battery light as well as the battery control showing low. the blower continues to turn on when the key is removed as well as the running board lights remaining on. i have had to disconnect and replace the battery several times. i am concerned this is a safety issue first and foremost because of the abs light as well as fire hazard. ford has refused to address these continual electrical problems. *tr

On 1/1/2010 - my 2000 ford expedition burst into flames. the car had been running well with no major problems. i had just parked the car and my son and i went inside to a store. about 5 minutes later the store manager remarked that there was a car on fire. it was my car. the smoke and flames were coming out of the hood on the driver side closer to the windshield. luckily no one was hurt. weather was not an issue as it was very cold outside, around 20 degrees. i know that in the past there have been issues with ford suvs bursting into flames due to faulty switch-related fires. i took my car in when i received the recall notice and got the fix. so i am really perplexed and angry that this happened and even more so since my 9 year old was with me! my family and i could have been really hurt! the fire department and police have ruled out any foulplay based on their report. *tr

While at work i received a phone call telling me our 2000 ford expedition was on fire and almost igniting our home. no one had driven the truck for 3 days but apparently according to the deputy fire marshal the fire was started in the engine compartment, most likely attributable to a faulty switch associated with cruise control braking. *tr

I have a 2000 eddie bauer ford expedition when it rains hard i have problems with my electrical system eg; motor runs when car is turned off, odometer comes on and off, 4x4 light flashes on and off... dealer informed me that the problems stems from a windshield leak, the leak has been repaired by a windshield professional, he then informed me that i need to replace my gem module and fuse box. i'm concerned of possible fire. i only have one car my children lives might be in danger. ford needs too take care of this problem. these are major defects that needs too be address. ford motor company faulty or defective designs that has caused this leakage that's causing electrical problems to the gem module and fuse box is putting not only me but other drivers in danger also. *tr

I own a 2000 for expedition and have had nothing but expensive problems. first the caps on the spark plugs go bad everytime it gets washed or goes through puddles on the road. then when it rains water seeps into some control box and causes the radio and air to run when the vehicle is turned off and the key removed, it will even go as far as engaging the anti theft so it won't start. i have even lost control of the windshield wipers while driving, the rain drips on my feet and soaks the floor mat even if it just sitting. the latest issue is with an ejected spark plug which fortunately did not start a fire just leaving me stranded twice in one week. i am told there is no good fix for this problem and i am getting estimates as high as $3500. most say that this vehicle has one design flaw after another and that ford only gives one excuse after another. so many people seem to have the same exact problems i can't help but to think the fault lies with ford. so many other things have gone wrong with it to fix them all would be replacing every part, wire, and device on it. i think it's just a lemon designed to create revenue. surely some must have the power to investigate on behalf of the consumer. *tr

I have a 2000 ford expedition. after a really bad rainstorm today my suv started acting possessed. it has been working fine and now all of the sudden the headlights turn themselves off and on, when they car is off the key is not in the ignition. the fan/ac in the suv runs while the vehicle is off and the key is not in the expedition. the whole electrical system is acting crazy, the suv does things on its on even when the vehicle is off and the key is not in the ignition.i had been left stranded with my vehicle in the walmart parking lot with the light, gauges, and air turning itself on and off. i am a single mother and i am so scared to drive it when it drives because i am worried the electrical system could catch fire or i could get into an accident with my daughter in the vehicle. *tr

My family and i were awaken in the middle of the night with our home fully engulfed in flames. it was determined by ford investigators and our local fire department that the fire originated from my ford expedition that was parked in the garage along with my wife's vehicle. it turned out there was a recall on a cruise switch on my vehicle. my wife or i never received any letter or phone call from ford notifying us of this dangerous condition. we were blessed to escape with our lives. *tr

Our 2000 ford expedition was parked for 12 hours and then a fire started in the engine compartment on the driver's side near the brake master cylinder. in 2007, we had the cruise control replaced by a ford dealer due to the recall. the fire was quickly extinguished, however, the vehicle is totaled. apparently the recall did not correct the fires. *tr

I was driving on the pennsylvania turnpike in a hard rain and the windshield wipers stopped working. i could not see and was forced to quickly brake and pull off of the road. this caused a car behind me to swerve out of control. fortunately, there was not any physical accident. i am very concerned about the safety of this vehicle and feel like i can't drive the vehicle safely in the rain. symptoms in the rain only: windshield wipers stop working. radio, fan lights work intermittently. clicking noises and fan running when vehicle is off and key is not in ignition. very well documented issue on the internet. due to leaky windshield which damages electrical system but ford has no recall since it is not a safety issue. case number from ford customer service - 0382221079. *tr

Recurrent issue with my 2000 ford expedition. when it rains, the electrical system shorts out, causing the battery to drain, making it undriveable. various electrical components go on and off without the key in the ignition, and some go out while driving. extremely dangerous for windshield wipers to fail during a rainstorm!!! sometimes, there is a burning smell coming from below the steering wheel. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 ford expedition. while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle began to vibrate and the abs indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. immediately following, the odometer, heat, and radio became inoperable and the vehicle began idling loudly. upon entering her driveway, the vehicle stalled. the brake pedal was depressed, but there was no reaction. the contact rear ended another vehicle in the driveway. the vehicle did not sustain any damages; however, the vehicle that was rear ended sustained damage to the rear bumper. there were no injuries or a police report. the vehicle was towed to a local repair shop and the mechanic stated that water entered through the windshield and drained into the fuse box, which damaged the g.e.m module. the dealer was not notified. the manufacturer stated that they were not liable for the repairs. the current and failure mileages were 120,000.

We recently had a snow storm in our area. after the storm our expedition started having problems. the first problem to occur was the front blower motor for the climate control would turn on high when the ignition was turned to the off position. i started researching this problem and started finding many similar stories on the internet. the next day many other problems popped up several dash light were flashing on and off, when this was happening you could here relays under the dash clicking on and off. when the truck was having its episode of flashing lights i found that my window controls and windshield wipers also did not work. i parked the car and turned it off that day and it had one more surprise for me. when the light switch was turned to the automatic day time running lights and the key was off you could here relays under the dash opening and closing at a fast rate. i turned the switch to off and it stopped. i talked to my stepfather who is a mechanic. he told me that he has seen this before he said it probably was my gem module, he said that this type of vehicle is prone to these modules malfunctioning. i did more research on line and found that a investigation was done on this issue by nhtsa the action number was ea05015 it was conducted in 2005. from the looks of it this has been a problem for a long time that has affected many people but still no action has been taken. this is one of two problems i have had with this otherwise good vehicle which is making it an unreliable and unsafe vehicle. how can i feel safe letting my family drive around in this vehicle when it rains or snows which is for the most part all the time in washington? in conclusion i hope this is taken seriously and will have some kind of impact on getting this problem solved not just for me but for all the owners of this vehicle with the same problem. *tr

When i turned my trucks engine off last night and removed the key, the ac blower continued running. of course it drained my battery. i replaced the battery. i researched the situation on the internet and found that hundreds of other ford expedition owners have the same problem. due to a mal-fitting windshield, water drains into the fuse box. it shorts out the fuse box and gem module. my truck is now not working and estimates range about $1000 to fix. clearly this should have been a recall issue, since ford admits that the windshield is the cause of the problem. *tr

Our 2000 ford expedition has an electrical problem that was described in ford special notice 15773. when it rains, water leaks into the gem/cjb and causes the electrical system to short out. this results in blowers running while the key is not in the ignition, the car to stall out while in use, and the car to not start at all at sometimes. since it is an electrical problem, it may also lead to vehicle fire. this occurs every time there is rain/snow. the dealership has looked at the problem before, but has not been able to find the problem. i discovered the problem searching on the internet and finding many other owners with the same problems. finally, one post referenced ford special notice 15773 which describes exactly what is happening to our vehicle. this needs to be recalled before fires and worse occur. *tr

I have a 2000 expedition that is experiencing electrical failure, dead battery every week, clicking from under the dash, lights flashing on the interior, radio/clock lights fail, drivers side back side window fails to open and rear window wiper stopped working. the flashing, clicking and other various electrical quirks happen at random times but the drained battery happens every week. i can jump start the truck but when it sits for a few days undriven and i try to start it...dead battery. i have replaced the battery several times until i realized it wasn't a faulty battery, it is an electrical malfunction. i took it to our local ford dealership to have it checked. i had also informed them of the leaking windshields/gem module problem i had read about. they informed me that they had several expeditions serviced with the same electrical malfunctions. they called me and said it was a dead battery after i did their job and informed them of the leaking windshield/gem module. i asked them to please check the module and whatever else was needed to fix my truck. they later said they checked it and found no corrosion in the gem module. they also said since it wasn't coding they had no clue what was causing the electrical failure. they said this without further investigation into other possible causes such as moisture in the keyless entry pad which is known to be faulty and a replacement part available. all that was done was to put a new battery in my truck, told my problem was a dead battery because it's their policy that when a vehicle comes in for service, to find the most logical reason for malfunction when it wont code and sent home with a truck that i know will not start in a week, possibly catch fire due to electrical problems, possibly kill someone or burn my house down. *tr

Heavy rains yesterday. on the way home from work, stopped at a store, turned off the key, but the heater blower did not turn off. turned the heater control to off and heard many rapid clicks from under the dashboard to the right of the steering wheel. on arriving home, blower did the same thing. vehicle parked in garage overnight. next morning, several series of five beeps came from under the dash. heater blower still stays on when key is out. we had water leaking around the windshield a couple years ago that caused the odometer to go out. had the windshield re-sealed. odometer intermittently comes back on since then. it would appear the leak is happening again, and water is getting down into the gem module and fusebox. have not attempted to replace these yet. i'm afraid this electrical problem will cause a fire in the expedition, which in my attached garage could likely burn down the entire house and threaten my family's safety. www.ford-forums.com, townhall-talk.edmunds.com, and www.automotiveforums.com all have many posts of similar water-leaking-causing-electrical-problems. *tr

I posted a complaint earlier and would like to follow up on it. i had several electrical problems after the rain. this last time caused my battery to completely die and all of my electrical stopped working. i had aaa come out and jump start the battery and i let it idle for about 45 min. until the electrical shop opened. during the idling i heard a loud noise that sounded very strange and unfamiliar so i jumped in and when i put it in gear to leave the noise stopped and i continued to the electrical shop. as soon as i parked and put it in park the noise began again. the guys at the shop heard it and immediately recognized it as the starter engaging. this was a result of my electric system malfunctioning. after a whole day of diagnosing where the electrical problem came from, they found that the main fuse box located inside the vehicle below the drivers side had a lot of moisture, rust and corrosion on the back side. they were not able to locate where the water is leaking from because it stopped raining. i am familiar with the windshield seal and the drain hole of the wiper blade as being the suspected origin of the leak, so as soon as it rains again i will go back to the shop so they can try and find the leak. they ordered a new fuse box from the dealership and it was around $145 but will take 4 days to ship, so they cleaned the back of the fuse box to hold me over. it runs fine and seems to be back to normal. so i would check that fuse box if you're having trouble. the high power fuse box in the engine compartment was not damaged. i'll update again if i find out where the leak is coming from. *tr

I've had several problems with the electrical system of my 2000 ford expedition after it rains. today my alarm would not work so i had to use the keyless pad to unlock my vehicle, but it does not work to lock the vehicle. when i open the door there are dinging noises and you can hear the fan running in the motor. the suv will not start, it tries to turn over but ends up failing and ending with clicking noise. the air bag light will stay lit and give me warning chimes. this has happened several times and i have managed to start it once it dries up . i've read many complaints on this issue and it is time that ford does a recall........we can not all be lying!! *tr

I own a 2000 ford expedition and after a hard overnight rain an electrical problem began. when i got into it the next morning the radio was playing and the heater display was on. when i started it all seemed normal until i put it into gear and the radio stopped, the heater stopped, the windshield wipers wouldn't work, and the windows wouldn't lower and when put back into neutral or park everything went back to normal. i brought it into the ford dealer who does all my repairs and he told me it was the gem module and it would cost $1000.00 for repair. i have no choice so i authorized the repair. he then informed me that when i pick it up i need to take it to a windshield repair shop to get the windshield resealed due to a defective seal that caused a leak that caused the gem module to malfunction. it seems that this is a large burden to put on the consumer since it is a known defect and there is no assurance that it won't happen again. i also believe this could be dangerous causing the vehicle to stall while driving or wipers to malfunction in the rain or any number of other problems since this module controls so many of the vehicles controls and instruments. *tr

We recently had a specialist inspect the 2000 eddie bauer ford expedition because of repeated electrical problems. he found a technical service bulletin for ford on the failure of windshield seals. he further advises that the repairs will be in excess of $1000. we have experienced failure of the vehicles electric system as outlined on at least 5 separate occasions. all times were preceded by moisture. the interior lights malfunctioned, the windshield wipers stopped, the blower motor was on high with ignition off, the radio shuts off, the interior dash lights remained on, etc. i have had my mechanic replace several items including the fuses and relays for the electronics. *tr

I have a 2000 ford expedition that has an electrical problem. i have researched online and discovered many others with similar problems. it is apparently due to a windshield leak that causes the gem module to short out. this first happened to me a month after i purchased the vehicle in february 2007. the vehicle wouldn't start, dash clicking noise , locks unlocking and locking continuously, lights on dash wouldn't go out, after key is removed dash info lights still on. when vehicle did start radio wouldn't work and by the way it was raining/icy. this problem has occurred several other times. windshield wipers not working properly, radio not working all problems happen only when it is raining. i personally cannot afford the $1,000. or so dollars it is apparently going to cost to fix this problem, which is obviously a factory defect. i have 4 children and have come to depend on this vehicle, i am afraid this short could cause and engine fire. *tr

I own a 2000 ford expedition. within the last month, i would turn the key to crank my truck and no sound. nothing would turn on. the electrical, totally dead. i would jump it off and it ran fine for 2 days and then the same would happen again. i have researched this problem and have found that a leaking windshield is the problem. it is leaking and causing my gem module and fuse box to get wet. this can cause a fire as everyone knows as well as unwanted electrical activity when the truck is unattended. it is also affecting my radio which will not turn on then turn on by itself. this is a manufacturing defect and i have read where many expedition owners are having the same problem with windshield leakage causing no starts and electrical problems. this should be fixed at fords expense considering it was not the fault of the owner ford has a manufacturing issue with their windshields. as you must know this is a fire hazard that could result in the death of innocent people. it is a defect from ford motor company that needs to be recalled now to prevent further damage or possible death by fire. if ford stands by their products this would be a good time to prove that to their loyal customers. *jb

I took our 2000 ford expedition (eddie bauer ed.) into joplin ford lincoln mercury because of various electrical abnormalities. including but not limited to: wipers stopping while driving(1-20-07). i had the dealership run computer diagnostics to tell me what the source of the problems was. i was informed that wds performed diagnostic tests found central junction box, and gem module causing concern, water intrusion caused by leaking windshield. total estimate to repair between $885 and $948 (depending on whether windshield could be reused). i declined to have repairs made (couldn't afford it) but pre-paid ($503.04 for parts and diagnostics) so that i could do the work myself. it was during an internet search for gem module that i happened upon this (nhtsa) website. i've read all of the complaints (expedition electrical problems) and realized that mine is not an isolated case, but quite common. i went on to read ( ea05015) by the odi and documents. unless they were not published, there are several flaws in the report. 1. is it possible that wipers failing is not widespread; but, the result of faulty production at one plant? the report i saw doesn't indicate that any discernment was attempted in this regard. 2. the leak was in the upper left corner of the windshield behind the support column. it was out of sight, contrary to ford's ascertion. 3. odi's rational for not recommending a recall is that not enough percentage could be established as a result of service records and customer complaints to nhsta. it would be interesting to contact some of the owners that had gem problems and leaks; and ask them if they had their wipers stop... because, though i reported the wipers to the service manager, what was shown on the repair order is, ...a c/s the blower fan runs on high when the key is shut off. heard clicking noise from the abs when the veh is shut off... maybe just a mistake, maybe not. *jb

On january 16, 2007 my wife drove our 2000 eddie bauer expedition to work as usual parked n a covered parking garage and went to work. at the end of the day she attempted to start her car and it was totally dead and would not start. she therefore had to get jump started in order to get home. on 1-17-07 i took the vehicle to a certified ford service department and had them evaluate and diagnose the problem. seems that the gem and cjb were water damaged and creating significant electrical shorts throughout the vehicles operating system. when the car was turned off the fan motor would actually continue to blow even with the keys out of the ignition. also the car at times would not turn off with the key. you can take the key out of the ignition and the car would still run. anyway, the dealer indicates that the windshield would have to be replaced and sealed as this was the source of the water damage. i questioned the validity of the diagnosis and the service advisor indicated that they were working on 2 more trucks with the same problem. the total cost of the repair is going to be $1150 to replace the windshield the gem and cjb. i have been reading up on this problem and fine that this problem is pretty wide spread in ford expeditions and want to make my particular situation a matter of record with the nhtsa in an effort to add to the number of consumers experiencing this problem. my vehicle has a long history of electrical problems which were corrected under a extended warranty. i am certain that this windshield leak problem is the source of my long standing problems. *jb

After the truck 100,000 miles service and was giving a green on all areas of ford quality report, i had to take the car back three days later after it rain our area, i was told the coil needed to be replaced. since the truck was not driving properly i had no choice but to have the coil replace. it worked for another three weeks until we had another down pour of rain, while driving i heard continuous beeps a minute or two later there was a burn smell in the truck it seems to come from under the dashboard on the driver side, being scared i had to park the truck and have it tow. i am now being told by the dealer that there is a water leak from the windshield which has caused a short with the electrical system and the cost would be $1400 to have it replace. this truck have had regular service every 3000 to 5000 miles since we bought it, this truck have not been involve in any accident. *nm

Special message #15773 these problems have existed for years. and although i have taken my vehicle in to have correct these problems, at no time did any service personnel reference the above message, or fix my vehicle in accordance with prescribed guidelines. the following is a summary of the services performed on my vehicle that are a direct result of this problem. i will be more than happy to provide copies of these documented services upon request.*dec 2000: my husband and i purchased our vehicle in washington with 13,000 miles on it while on christmas leave from germany, and our truck sat in storage until our return in sep 2001. we then drove our vehicle from california to our new duty station at fort belvoir, virginia.*jan 2002: we had issues with the electrical and transmission modular. we took the vehicle to the world of ford dealership in arlington, virginia. they replaced the power train control modular, airbag light, and the check engine light, and reprogrammed the gem modular. the odometer reading at this time was 26,795 miles. fortunately, the vehicle was still under warranty.*jul 2002: i took the truck back to world of ford in arlington, virginia for the following problems: transmission slipping, check engine light, airbag lights, and abs lights. ford said they could not duplicate problems. the vehicle was still covered under warranty with an odometer reading of 30,481 miles. again, although the ford special message had been released in april of 2002, at no time was it mentioned to me as a possible source for these problems.*sep 2004: i went back to world of ford with the same problems mentioned above, plus the trip meter/odometer was blinking in and out. they replaced the led and electrical connections under the driver seat, and fixed the lights on the dash. *jb

We first noticed a problem when it was raining. the airbag light would intermittently come on. then we also started to notice that the heater / a/c fan would continue to run after the vehicle was shut off. on sunday 4/30/06, i was driving in the rain on a freeway & the wiper light started to come on & the airbag light was on. every once in a while, the wipers would not work properly. on my way home, again on the freeway in the rain, the wiper light & the 4x4 light would flash off & on at the same time & again, the at times the wipers would not work properly. the next morning as i drove to work, again in the rain, only the 4x4 light was flashing & the rear wiper would not work. also, the front wipers did not work intermittently. i specificity recall turning the heater fan off that morning before leaving the vehicle. after work, i attempted to unlock my vehicle w/the remote unlock & it would not unlock. i manually unlocked the vehicle & the dash lights were on. it looked like i had not turned the key off all of the way, but i did! and the vehicle would not start. i had to walk a couple of miles to my husband's work & he had to take his lunch early to bring me home. ford had better get a recall out on this. not only is it very inconvenient, but when your wipers don't work in the rain, it is very dangerous!!! i had to get the vehicle towed the next day. after the repair facility sent 2 1/2 days trying to determine the source of the problem, they discovered that water was leaking by the windshield onto the gem module & the fuse panel. not only do i have to pay $477 for the parts only, i also have to pay to have the windshield resealed. what a joke!! *nm

When raining car electrical system comes on by itself-dash lights, heater fan, door entry sounds. car ignition turns over but will not start. i have had the windshield taken out and replaced more than once, the gem module and fuse box replaced, numerous towing bills and major inconvenience. i have spent $1500 approx. to say nothing of the value of my time. the ford dealer will not continue to correct the problem nor will he offer a refund for repairs. as the owner of almost twenty personal and business vehicles, i can't believe ford will not get this issue resolved for myself and the many other expedition owners with similar complaints. i will no longer be a ford customer and will replace this and the other ford vehicles in our fleet with another brand unless ford does something to correct the problem quickly. sb. *nm

Beginning april 2005, our 2000 ford expedition has had electrical problems that occur almost any time it rains. the water leaks under the hood and shorts out the truck. we had to replace the gem module and fuse box at our expense since the truck was out of warranty. our mechanic cannot replicate the leak after many attempts and he even went to a ford dealership for their assistance. they also could not solve the problem. our truck has been towed numerous times to our mechanic dead on arrival. the truck is completely unreliable if it rains. this is a known problem. we have seen discussions about it on various websites. we wrote to ford after the first occurrence but ford said they would not take responsibility for it. our mechanic has been extremely helpful and understanding about this, but at some point, if i were him, i would close my shop if i saw our truck coming on the back of a tow truck one more time. *jb

On several occasions my lights and/or radio and or wipers would give out during a rain storm. on the last occasion my car's electrical system failed and my car turned off. i could not re-start until next day. i took it to the dealer and they told me that water had seeped in between the windshield and into the electrical control box. they would have to remove the windshield, re-caulk it, replace the gem and fuse boxes and that would take care of the problem. this was not under warranty because the caulking had deteriorated with time as it normally would. i've had cars for 10 to 15 years and the caulking on the windshield has never deteriorated like this. the suv is only 4 yrs old anyway. my problem was compounded by the fact that they broke the windshield during this process and i was stuck for that cost also. total of $1,223.67. *jb

Details: the electrical system came on when there was no key in the ignition. the radio and air conditioner were also on. the lights came on and the expedition was trying to start itself. it continued all night and the next day, the police were called and looked at it, and they said no tampering was done. the battery finally died and i had to buy a new battery. my expedition is currently at mullinex ford in apopka, fl. they are still trying to figure out what happened. i found many complaints about the same occurrence, problems with electrical due to a leaky windshield. i feel that this is a defect and ford should help me with the cost of this repair. i don't mind paying for repairs if they are within normal limits, but due to all the other complaints and service bulletins i do not believe that this is a normal car repair. recall date: may 13, 1998 component: wheels:lugs/nuts/bolts potential units affected: 1520000 summary: vehicle description: multi-purpose vehicles and light duty pickup trucks. the lug nuts on these vehicles may not create sufficient clamp load allowing wheel movement in relation to the hub/rotor mounting surface. consequence: this can result in the loosening of lug nuts, stud fatigue failure, and the potential for a wheel separation from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. remedy: owners of these vehicles will be receiving two notifications. the first notification, which began in may 1998, will provide an interim repair procedure until parts become available. this interim procedure can be completed by owners or their dealers. it specifies that the lug nut torque must be verified to be 100 lbs. then the lug nuts need to be tightened an additional 1/8 to 1/4 turn more. there will be a second owner notification, which is expected to begin july 20, 1998, under which dealers will inspect the wheel studs and replace the wheel lug nuts. notes: ford motor company. *jb

Rolling up driver window-clicking noise/ticking in front end during slow turns-slowing down/engine vibration and roaring on acceleration/accelerator sticking while using cruise control/electrical problems(i.e-windows rolling up and down w/out prompting, door locks inoperable, running board lights flashing on and off or non-functioning, illuminated temp. and compass flashing or non-functioning, fan in a/c running for no reason w/vehicle off and keys out of ignition, indicator lights in dash flashing on and off, wipers operating w/out prompting, rear window wiper non-functioning, stereo only working in park and reverse or not at all, electrical clicking noise under the dash, left blinker faster than the right)/black foam substance coming from a/c vents/thumping noise right wiper when in use. the problems have been reported to ford dealer and they stated it was a bad gem module and told us that it was getting wet. they stated to disconnect the battery when the vehicle is parked. these problems are worse when it rains. they also stated that this will happen if it is humid. we live in florida, i don't think that we should have to disconnect the battery everytime we park the vehicle. but if we don't, we have all of this going on when the vehicle is off and then the battery goes dead. i was driving on the highway and all of these things started happening at one time, it was raining. i almost lost control of the vehicle trying to get the wipers to function and get the vehicle off the road until all of this stopped. i bought the truck used from a local dealer back in november of last year. the problems began almost immediately. as the problems have gotten worse, i looked this up on the internet and found that ford knew about the problem with the gem module, just as they knew about the cruise control problem and they are doing nothing to fix it. as i stated above, their answer to the problem which they knew existed, is to disconnect my battery everytime i park the vehicle. *nm

I first noticed a problem with my windshield wipers, they would not come on or just stop running then they started not turning off i had to pull the fuse to turn the wipers on and off. i made an appointment with ford to have the problem looked at and was advised that the control switch was bad and would have to be replaced also during the same time period and same appointment i had to have a brake sensor replaced. i started noticing electrical problems like the radio would turn off when the vehicle was taken out of park and some times it would turn off when you were driving down the road and turn back on by its self. there have been times when i would be leaving work and try to use the remote to unlock the doors and it would not work and when i use the key to open the door the radio would be on and the ac would be blowing air. i have since discovered that the windshield is leaking and after a rain was when the problem would occur mostly. i made another appointment and advised ford what was happening and i was advised that this is a common problem in the ford expedition and ford f150. i was advised that the seal on the windshield over time separates from the frame and causes the leak. i said then this is a defect and was advised no its not its just something that happens. my expedition is only 5 years old its a 2000 in great condition and had been garage kept for the past 4 years. now i am out $1043.69 just to have the windshield replaced and the gm module and fuse box replaced as well. *jb

Ford expedition was sitting in carport. just returned from the doctors office about 5:15 pm. about 6:00 my son hayden was going out to feed the animals and noticed that black smoke was comming from the car. he screemed and at that point i ran to the kitchen to find out what the problem was. he pointed out the smoke and i ran to the bedroom to get the keys to the car and had my sonn call 911. i then ran out the door and was going to try and move the car away from the house. by the time i could get close to the car flames started to appear on drivers to middle of the car between the hood and windshield. the black smoke began to thicked and i could see the paint bubbles in the hood. i attempted to open the drivers side door, but it was too hot and my son and the 911 operator were telling me to get away from it. at that point i could do nothing but watch as my car was burning and then it started to catch the house on fire as well. as we waited for the fire department to arrive all we could do is watch car explode several times and cause sevre damage to our house. ford motor will be at the house monday aug. 22, 2005 to review this case. experts in the area are telling us that this was caused by a faulty curise control switch and ford, ti and dupont all know about this problem and are doing nothing about it. i will however not stand by and watch since we were lucky and no lives were lost,

In spring of 2004 the owner of a 2000 ford expedition vin. no. 1fmru1560yla84938. upon opening the hood of the vehicle, the componets surrounding the cruise control componet and several other componets including the abs module were so hot that that the driver of the vehicle received minor burns disconnecting the ruptured part of the abs system. the vehicle had been idle and turned off for approximately one (1) hour when the event occurred. upon the vehicle being started the next day, the horn would not work, the abs system light was illuminated and the cruise control would not engage. in april 2004, the cruise control switch was replaced. in late may, the cruise control switch was still inoperative after replacement. on june 14,2005 the complaints called ford with the additional information that the vehicle was continuing to short out in various ways including placing the vehicle in the drive position and a new problem of the radio system would malfunction. when placed back in park, the radio was re-activate. vehicle was examined by parker ford and they advised the horn circuit had been overloaded and a fuse blown in the horn module. they also advised the abs module and pump were in need of replacement. the complainant believes this vehicle represents a continuing fire hazard and and that the damaged componet failures, all of which occurred at the same time were directly related to the defective cruise control switch. complainant believes that additional vehicles may be at risk due to similar overloads on the electrical systems. vehicle has never been wrecked, submerged in water or altered in anyway from the original factory design.complainant has 24 years prior law enforcement experience. vehicle history is also well known to current kentucky state trooper. request nhtsa in depth review of potential for continuing problems and collateral failures of other componets associated with speed control switch.

4 x 4 warning light on dash board began flashing. all wheel drive failed. the ford dealer replaced the gem module and 4 x 4 sensor. i called other ford dealer's to double check the findings of the dealer i was working with. one serviceman commented that the only way the gem module can go out is to get it wet. this is difficult to do since it is inside the dash board. i now see there are complaints about leaky windshields in expeditions. i am concerned about what safety issues may result when the gem module fails, and what else might fail if there is a leaky windshield. in my case, the all wheel drive failed. the old part has been discarded.

6-12 months ago, 2000 ford expedition started having erratic electrical behavior. windshield wipers quit working during rainstorm while away on vacation. was very hazardous to have happen while driving down highway during a downpour! radio would go on and off while shifting the automatic transmission. took to dealer (still under warranty at this time), they tightened up some things, problem went away, until next rain storm! due to needing the vehicle, i could not get it back to dealer before factory warranty expired. i thought it would be ok though, because i had purchased a premium extended warranty. took to dealer a second time, now truck tries to start itself with no key in ignition, wipers again fail while driving during rainstorm, heater blower motor remains running after exiting vehicle. this drains the battery if left overnight, and results in an inoperable vehicle. truck four wheel drive indicators flash on and off at times while driving. not a good feeling when traveling 70 mph on the freeway. after inspection, dealer informs me that water has intruded into the dash components due to a leaking windshield. they state the extended warranty wont cover it because they dont cover water intrusions. gem module, fusebox need replaced, windshield resealed to fix problem. quote of about $1000.00 i declined repairs at the time. went home and researched the problem. seems many, many people have had the same problem. i called ford and after many phone calls, they declined to do anything about it. i am very disappointed with ford. have always bought their products because i believed they stood behind their reliability and workmanship. here is a factory installed windshield that started leaking before their 3/36 warranty expired, their dealer band-aided the problem instead of fixing the cause of the problem while still under warranty. now i have an inoperable vehicle in my driveway that frankly, seems to be a major safety risk to put my family of six in.

After my truck sat in a downpour, i got into it to run an errand. the radio completly shut off when the vehicle was in drive or reverse. when put into park it came right back on. the next rain we had, a few weeks later, i was driving and different instument lights began to come on. 4x4, windshield wiper fluid, etc. lights were illuminated. the vehicle was not in 4x4 at this time and the windshield washer fluid was 3/4 of the way full. a few days later while driving in the rain again my wipers completly quit working. every 10 seconds or so they would kick on again for about 3 seconds and then stop again. this was an absolutly terrifying situation. i was driving in the pouring down rain on an incredibly busy street and my wipers quit. after the first couple of incidents my husband and i narrowed it down to having something to do with rain water. i asked a ford tech about this over the phone and was treated like i had absolutly no idea what i was talking about. i finally took it into a different ford dealership and was told that in fact the seal around the windshield was leaking, allowing water in to short out the electronics. i am very dissatisfied with having to pay for these repairs when the vehicle was not very old an in great condition.

I am the owner of a 2000 ford expedition....eddie bauer, fully loaded, 5.4 triton v8.....i purchased it brand new in feb. of 2000.....yesterday(1/26/05) i stopped at my mothers house and was inside for about an hour or so. i walked outside to leave and my mother and i stood in the driveway and talked for about 15 minutes or so. at one point my mother noticed smoke started pouring from my hood. the truck had been parked in the driveway for an hour or so and was not running at the time. i popped the hood and smoke was pouring from my master brake cylinder. and with in a minute flames started to come from that area. i immediately hooked the water hose up and put out the flames. i had it towed and spoke with insurance, and they agreed to cover the damages. this morning, i noticed on the yahoo headlines that ford is recalling 800,000 vehicles. i read the article and it siad it only affected the 2000 model expeditions and f150's and navigators. it stated that the defect was caused from the cruise control shortingt out and cause fires under the hood. i also read the 3 fires had been reported. i guess i am #37. my crusie control stopped working over a year ago, but it was long out of warranty and i never felt the need to get it fixed, it wasnt a big deal to me. but had i not been outside when the fire started it would have burnt the truck to the ground, probably the brand new nissan titan parked next to it and possibly even the house could have recieved damage. my main concern is that had this happend when i was at home, my house and all my possesions would be gone today. i park my expedition in the garage at all times. had it happened there, my house would have been destroyed. this announcement seems a little late for my concerns. just thought i should report this incident. my contacts are jland2218@yahoo.com phone # (903) 245-7080 im sure nothing will come of this, even though i feel my life was endangered greatly. *ak

I am having severe electrical problems with the 2000 ford eb expedition. these problems were caused by a defect in the seal of the factory installed windshield leaking water into the cab of the vehicle. there have been many incidents where the vehicle has become incapacitated, and one instance when smoke emerged from the driver's side of the front dashboard water was seeping into the cab and accessing the fuse box. upon contact a short was created, causing the climate control unit, heater and a/c unit fan to begin blowing when the key was removed from the ignition. this problem occurred anytime the vehicle was exposed to rain or snow. *ak

The #4 ignition coil pack failed and was replaced. this is a common problem on ford 4.6l and 5.4l engines. i am creating a database of failures from multiple user groups and can confirm multiple (up to five on the same vehicle) failures of this part because of a heater hose that leaks on to the coil pack directly beneath it. mine failed while accelerating on to a highway, and was almost rear-ended since the truck suddenly lost power being that the #4 cylinder was no longer firing. since multiple failures have been recorded, ford should be liable for this as it is clearly a design flaw. *ak

If the ignition switch is turned to ignition position #3 as defined in the owners manual, (p61), the gearshift lever may be moved out of park, without depressing the brake. position #3 is supposed to shut off engine and all accessories without locking the steering wheel. the problem is that it also unlocks the brake shift interlock safty mechanism that is supposed to prevent the gearshift lever from being moved from p (park). our 2 year old son was able to knock the gearshift lever down 1 position out of park(reverse) and the car rolled forward, down a hill and into a pond, wth him in it! the vehicle door locks automatically locked as the vehicle started to move. luckily the passanger window opened when the vehicle went into the water (must have shorted out) we were able to rescue him before the vehicle sank (approx 1 min). when the vehicle was removed from the water, the gearshift lever was in reverse position and the ignition switch was in position #3. we are concerned that the brake shift interlock is not activated when the ignition switch is in position #3. is there a valid reason for this, or is it an oversight in the design. i have since tested this on a 1997 expedition and it does the same thing. has there been any other reported problems with this? we called ford and they said that they do not do their own safety testing and that we should contact the nhtsa. what should our next course of action be?
