With no warning spare tire cable snapped while driving down road causing spare tire to fall out and strike rear wheel of vehicle, then flew off side of road. discussion with ford indicated this is unheard of and they wanted $300+ to repair. discussions with multiple other shops (not ford) indicate this does happen with this type of spare mount. repairs completed for under $150. i am concerned that spare can come out and once loose hit other vehicles or property/persons. *tr

I purchased 4 goodyear wrangler rt/s tires from discount tire co. on 1/17/2005 the truck began to shake and vibrate while driving at highway speed. i returned the truck to discount they rebalanced and rotated the tires and informed me if the truck continued to vibrate to take it to the dealership because it must be mechanical. i returned it to the dealership, they aligned, and roadforce balanced the tires. they found that their was a defect in the tires because too much weight was needed to balance the tires. they recommended that the tires be replaced. i returned the truck to discount tire co. they again did not find a defect in the tire. i then took it to a third party big o tire co. they inspected the tires and found a hop in the rear tires. it was again recommended to replace the defected tires. *nm

I had 4 tires replaced due to irregular tread wear on may 22, 2001. i just recently received a notice in the mail stating that these particular tires were recalled, but in order to be reimbursed for my purchase, i would have had to purchase the tires between august 19, 2001 and october 10, 2002. the time period is inadequate in my case. a defective tire is a defective tire. i feel as though i am being penalized because my tires had to be replaced earlier than the allotted dates. essentially, if i had waited 3 more months to have my tires replaced, perhaps injuring myself and others on the road, then i could have been reimbursed. the time period needs to extended on the replacement of the tires. dt

We followed the manufactuers certification label inside the drivers door for the correct psi for all 4 tires. the certification label indicated 26psi front and 30psi rear. we tested the tires on a montly basis and kept the tire pressure as indicated. when i went in for an oil change i wanted them to check the tires because they where starting to wear on the edges. i was advised by tiresplus that all 4 tires needed replacement. the steel belt was coming through the tread. these tires only had 20k miles on them for a 2 year old vehichle. which 20k is under the national average for mileage on a vehicle. i'm so lucky that these tires didn't blow out due to the steel belts coming through while i was driving them. i contacted the car dealership on a few occasions and they never responded to me. thank you

I have filed a paper report on two of the original set tires that failed. i went to a tire shop and they set a 3rd of the set was bad so i replaced it. i have been trying to deal with general, ford customer service, and the dealership but there procedure to get something done has been an ordeal that i am still working on from the original blow out. i had my 2 bad tires replaced at at tire shop because they separated, one actually blewout and caused damaged to the vehicle. the 2nd was about to blow out becase it developed a knot and was bumping as i went down the road. when i was having these two reaplaced concern for our safety, the tire shop said the 3rd tire was seperating. i had it reaplaced. this pass satursday while in rout to a wedding the 4th remaining tire of the original set started peeling off and started bumping. i stopped and changed it with the 5th tire of the original set. this is the spare. i also found the brake line had been damaged from the original blow out of the first tire when my wife came home today and told me the brake pedal when to the floor. i have all of these bad tires in my possession and i am sure you would want to examine them before i give them to general. they say they must have them before they will consider a claim from me for the damage to my vehicle or any of all of the expenses i have incurred from the failure of their set of tires. i think these tires are defective. they could have easily caused me and my family our lives. i know this report does not cover all of the details. i can give all of the details dring whatever investigation that follows. i would appreciate you help on this safety issue. i tried to contact general today but the number i was given is 740-588-4164 and this rings a fax machine. please have someone come look at these tires as soon as possible.*ak

I had to replace the general grabber tires on my ford expedition today because they were unsafe, according to nyb where i purchased new tires. the tires had only 23,500 miles on them but i was shown how three of the four did not track i.e. they seriously wobbled on the balance machine. i was told they were a potential driving hazard as they could blowout or suffer tread separation. i was also told that many other owners of general grabber tires are replacing them for the same reason. if so then maybe this should be recall by ford and general tire. incidentally, i complained to ford which referred me to general tire but when i then complained to general tire, they referred me back to ford. they seem to have a catch-22' set up between them. *ak (dot number: ??? tiresize: p275/17)

All the tires i am reporting went bad while i had small children in the vehicle. all of them went bad as the result of a separation. they all got big bubbles in them where the tread separated from the rest of the tire. i believe that the only reason i didn't have a big accident was because i could feel the vehicle wobbling when i drove, due to the bubble in the tire. i find it very interesting that these tires all came appart at appx. 25000 miles. i had the fourth tire replaced before it could go out on me too.*ak (tiresize: 275/6017)

Both rear tires had tread separation and a blow out occurred on one of them .... the vehicle had been to the dealers and had brake repairs at approx. 34,000 miles . from initial lease of vehicle, there were complaints of rough ride and apparent tire problems. the dealer never made any offer to correct the problem but balanced and rotated the tires. upon taking this problem to them on 09/04/2001 they disclaimed any knowledge or assistance in adjusting the obvious malfunction of the general tire which blew out... upon taking the vehicle to a tire store and had them check the tires for any other damage they discovered that another tire had a separation of the tread and had a knot on the tire which was just beginning to ware. all tires had proper air pressure. i have kept these tires for further investigation and complaint follow-up.*ak (tiresize: 275x60r17)

I came home from work and went into the supermarket. when i came out i noticed my right rear tire was almost flat. i put the spare on and the next morning drove up to the local firestone dealer. the firestone dealer said there was a hole between the tread and the sidewall and therefore it couldn't be fixed. they (firestone) told me the tire was not on the recall list so they wouldn't do anything about it. i went to the ford dealer and they told me the same thing. later i saw a report on channel 2 in los angeles about yet another firestone failure and the picture of the hole in the tire they had on tv looked exactly like the hole in my 17 tire. i am suspicious that anything on the road punctured my tire but feel like it was the start of a big problem with the 17 wilderness at tires. i bought a goodyear tire for my spare and today i ordered four michelin tires. you need to do something about all wilderness at tires before more people get injured or killed. ford and firestone should be held accountable for this mess. i am sorry i paid $42,000 for a brand new expedition and less than 7 weeks later have to spend over eight hundred dollars on replacement tires just to feel safe. do something!!!( dot number: tire size: p265/70r17 )

We were traveling on i-40 returning from a trip to colorado and had a blow out about 20 miles west of weatherford, ok. the tire was on a brand new car with only 4500 miles. we had checked the tires when we left colorado that morning and they were fine. when the tire blew, the car was very hard to control and pitched side to side wildly. my husband was able to regain control of the car and pull off the road. when road side assistance arrived, the man commented that the tire did not look like a normal blow out and that we should have it checked. i took the car back to the ford dealership who assured me that there was nothing wrong with the tire other than a normal road hazard (this also prevented me from collecting on the tire warranty). he also was not concerned about how the car reacted to the blown tire. i do not feel that i would have been able to control the car if i had been driving. i was not pleased with the lack of concern about my comments. i spoke to at least 2 friends who can testify under oath that i made comments about my concerns about the quality of the tires and my concern about the lack of control after the tire failed. these comments were made during july 24-28 before any of the current information about ford and firestone was made public. i regret that i did not keep the tire that blew. i hope that you will expand your investigation to include all firestone wilderness at tires as well as the ford expedition. *ak( dot number: vncu 1rd 4 tire size: p255/70r16 )

Road conditions: dry, flat, little to no traffic. on hwy 249 just north of spring cypress, where the hwy ended and became a 4 lane flat hwy. approximately 4:00-4:30 in the afternoon. back passenger tire on 2000 ford expedtion, firestone wilderness at, tread separation causing a blowout, and causing me to veer to the right side of road. was able to get vehicle safely to shoulder and in the driveway of a dodge dealership. approximate speed was around 45-50 mph. no driver error, no road hazard (no rips, tears, punctures, etc. found on tire) and tire was not over/under inflated. looked as if someone with a scapel just removed the side flat part of the tire where the lettering is from the tread portion that touches the road. luckily i was at a speed that i could control in good driving conditions with little traffic in the area, or i could have had a serious accident. i had to use all my strength to keep wheel to the left as the truck continued to go to the right. firestone dealer did not want to replace for free (as stated under my warranty), but they did eventually. they acknowledged there was no driver error, road hazard, or tire misuse, but refused to state on the receipt the cause was a flawed/faulty tire. replaced with the same type of tire. vehicle only 7 months old with around 7000-7500 miles on it at the time. tread on tire was around an 10-11 i believe the firestone dealer said. firestone dealer kept the faulty tire to send to manufacturer for testing. *ak( dot number: )

All four vehicle tires had separated tread, one major, the vehicle was not driven over 70 mph highway and was not taken off-road at any time. tires were replaced by discount tire 1300 e expressway 83 mcallen tx 956-668-9789 on 6-18-2002. tires were kept inflated properly, alignment maintained with normal tread wear on tires. one tire had been repaired for a flat. general tire was contacted and demonstrated no concern over four tire treads seperating on one vehicle under normal use on 6-19-2002. i believe general has a severe safety issue with this tire that needs immediate attention.*ak

My wife was driving our 2000 expedition on the freeway at 60mph when the tread separated on the right rear tire, causing a blow out and an accident, almost causing a catastrophic rollover. i am fortunate she was not killed. what irritates me the most is general tire has a reputation for this problem, especially here in arizona, and the consumer has no idea. these tires were not worn and were properly inflated, and the only legal recourse i would have against general tire would have been if my wife and infant child had been seriously injured. i am incensed about this as the only reason general will get away with this is due to the fact my wife's driving skills saved her life. my opinion is general and ford continue to deceive the public about the safety of the product they are putting on the road, and there is no repercussion for their negligence.*ak

I had my tires inspected at the sears auto center in odessa, tx. the vehicle had developed a vague roughness at highway speeds. the inspector found depressions in the center of the treads on two of the tires and told me that this indicated that one or more of the belts under the treads had separated. i had all four tires replaced with goodyear tires and i have the original tires in my garage.( dot number: tire size: 255 70 r16 )
