In its letter dated january 27, 2005 to odi, ford indicated that it would conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall # 05v-017) to remedy an overheating speed control deactivation switch in approximately 738,490 subject vehicles.the vehicles affected by the recall are certain 2000 model year (my) ford f150, ford expedition and lincoln navigator equipped with speed control and certain 2001 model year f150 supercrew vehicles built through august 7, 2000.since opening pe04-078, odi has identified other reports of key off engine compartment fires in ford vehicles with similar speed control deactivation switches that were not the subject of this preliminary evaluation or ford's recall 05v-017.ford's response to the odi information request letter dated december 3, 2004, provided an additional 107 allegations of key off engine compartment fires that were also in vehicles not subject to this investigation or included in the ford recall 05v-017.an engineering analysis (ea) is warranted to determine if a safety defect trend exists relating to key off engine compartment fires in vehicles outside the scope of this preliminary evaluation.odi will expand the scope of it's investigation at the ea phase to include the 1995 through 2002 model years of the ford f150, ford expedition and lincoln navigator vehicles.

The ford expedition model year 2000 was parked in the garage for approximately 3 hours on the evening of february 13,2012. the family went to bed and was awakened around 8:30pm by a police officer who had kicked the front door of the residence in to inform us our garage was on fire. the smoke had not yet entered the home but some fumes were thought to be coming through the duct system causing us to sleep more deeply. we got out of the house and crossed the street by that time the garage was fully engaged in flames. the metal garage doors melted with the heat. later when the fire was put out the fire chief did an investigation to say the fire originated in the ford behind the location of the battery. the insurance company sent out specialists who said it was the speed control module that was the cause of the fire. my family has been displaced for 3-6 months while repairs are done to the house. both of our vehicles were in the garage and were a total loss from the fire. the owner of the vehichle was a carpenter and lost all of his tools from the fire.

I drove the expedition yesterday afternoon and returned home approximately 5:45 pm cst. approximately 11:15 p.m. he heard popping noises and attributed it to early fireworks in the neighborhood. at 11:30 p.m. the fire department knocked on our front door to ask if our vehicle was on fire in the back. our 2000 ford expedition was engulfed in flames and the fire department was putting the fire out. it was brought to our attention several times since last night that the vehicle may have been under a recall for the cruise control system and similiar fires.

Our 2000 ford expedition spontaneously combusted in our driveway after sitting for 2 days. it was determined to be the cruise control switch. i am appalled that congress is so upset at toyota when ford knows that 11 million vehicles have these faulty cruise control switches and has done nothing to get ford to take responsibility. our house was completely destroyed and my wife and 2 dogs escaped with their lives. the same day in a neighboring community another family's house was burned down by a 2001 expedition with the same problem. why are you so critical of a foreign company and so ambivalent to a domestic car company with a history of defects that they do not take responsibility for? these vehicles are still exploding and killing people and yet i do not hear any outrage over this.*tr

On july 10 2008 at 5:30am or there about our 2000 ford expedition caught on fire. at this time the car had been sitting in the driveway for about 10 hours. it was parked in front of our garage which also burnt our garage. by the grace of god a neighbor was on his way to work and woke us up and called 911. myself my wife and my six year old got out of the house safely. had the car been parked in the garage the likelihood of us been able to safely make it out of the house on time would have been slim to none. we called ford motors and filed a complaint. however, they told us that they were unable to help us at this time. and that we should expect a letter from them (ford) in about 10-12 days. once we receive the letter then we could respond at that time. in the mean time neither our insurance company or ford were willing to help us. they truck was serviced regularly. *tr

Prior to our 2000 ford expedition being recalled for the cruise control problems, we experienced electrical problems with the interior lighting group; radio, windshield wipers, etc. after a rain, the windshield wipers would not work and the blower motor would remain on or be on without ignition activation. the battery has run down because of this! we recently experienced the problems again and took the vehicle to our mechanic who recommended an electrical specialist. he diagnosed the windshield seal leak as a contributing factor to the junction box-gem module malfunctioning. *tr

On the morning of 6 jan 2004, my kids and i were on a routine trip to the gym. this gym is only a few miles from our home. our 2000 ford expedition would not accelerate and stayed at 30 mph even though i did not have the cruise control on. when i tried to stop at several residential stop signs near the gym, the expedition would not brake and proceeded to run through the stop signs. the expedition would not stop and stayed stuck on 30 mph. i called 911 for assistance. the operator told me to put my parking brake on, and i did. when this action did not stop the car, she suggested that i shift to a lower gear. i did, and still the expedition would not stop. i had to drive down a steep hill without the protection of brakes. at the bottom of the hill was a traffic light at an intersection. i could not stop or slow down. i had to turn right going still 30 mph. i could only honk my horn to call the attention of oncoming cars to the fact that i was coming and that i could not stop. after making the right turn, the operator asked me if we were slowing down at all. i replied no and that the expedition remained at 30 mph and was not slowing down. about one minute after her question, just like that, the car slowed down and stopped. the east peoria police officers (who by this time were on the scene) told me to put the car in park and i did. they drove the expedition to the side of the street for me. it was the single most terrifying moment of my life. after the incident two separate mechanics from two different businesses concluded that the brakes were fine. my husband has contacted ford and the local dealership. both have denied knowing of any such previous incidents (which are clearly documented in this forum). as of today, ford has taken neither responsibility or action. the dealership has disconnected the cruise control and will keep it next week for a couple of days to run diagnostic testing on it. complaint by cristina pate, east peoria, il *la

While stopped at a stop light behind other vehicles, my vehicle suddenly accelerated pushing me into the vehicle in front of mine. applying full pressure with both feet on the brake pedal, my vehicle continued to lurch forward into the vehicle in front of me and pushing it into another vehicle. i had to put my car into park and shut off the engine to get it to stop lurching forward. it must have lurched forward 3 or 4 times into the truck in front of me after making initial hit. we've noticed where the idle would increase in the past but nothing that seemed to be dangerous in any way. we had a 98 expidition that would increase in rpm's and lurch forward and had to take it to the dealer for repair. that driver in the truck in front of me complained of neck problems and had to be taken in an ambulance. *ak

Since purchasing this vehicle in march 2000, we have had problems with rough idling, transmission not wanting to shift, front end clunking, rear end suspension and sudden acceleration. extensive repairs have been done on this vehicle, including replacing the transmission, yet none of the above items have been repaired. it is extremely dangerous to be driving a vehicle when suddenly it will accelerate and drive on its own. the car can drive at 50 - 60 mph for several miles without stepping on the accelerator. when stopped at a traffic light you have to listen to the engine, watch the rpm's and be ready to put the car into neutral and push forcefully on the brakes to keep the car from plowing into the car ahead. last week i pulled into the bank parking lot and with no warning the car's rpm's jumped to 3,000 and i barely missed hitting two parked cars. in addition, the front end makes hard, loud grinding noises, when backing up the four wheel drive goes out and it feels like the car has two flat tires. it also does this sometime going forward and turning, so it is difficult to steer when it does this. from the day that this car was purchased it has idled like an old car that desperately needs a tune up. all these problems still exist after having the car be at the dealer for 39 days this year. because this vehicle is not safe, i have notified chino hills ford, ford and the arbitration board that i want ford to repurchase my vehicle because it is not safe.*ak

On 5/3/01, at approx. 2:40 pm, i was driving north on 10th(amsterdam) ave in manhattan in relatively light traffic at approx 20-25mph. as i crossed the intersection of amsterdam & 58th st, my vehicle suddenly began to accelerate uncontrollably toward a high rate of speed. standing on the brake pedal with all my weight only managed to slow the vehicle to perhaps 30mph, with engine racing as if the gas pedal were pushed to the floor, when obviously there was no pressure being applied to it at all. as i crossed the intersection of 59th st, i managed to gently ease the gearshift lever into neutral. this combined with my continuous pressure on the brake brought the vehicle to nearly a stop, with the engine still racing. the instant forward motion ceased, the vehicle lurched into reverse, with the gearshift still in the neutral position. the vehicle then began traveling backwards, once again at the same high rate of acceleration. still standing on the brake petal, i switched the ignition off. a split second second later, the right rear quarter of the vehicle slammed into an ambulance, at a speed of perhaps 30-35 mph. from the beginning of the incident until the end, i travelled about 500 feet forward and 120 feet in reverse, continuously maintaining maximum pressure on the brake petal. my vehicle impacted the ambulance at the strongest part of its structure, the curved, steel reinforced front corner of the ambulance box. had the ambulance been 2 feet further back, the driver would have been killed instantly. there were 3 emt's in the front of the ambulance, and no passenger or personel in the rear. all of them saw exactly what i have described, and i am sure their statements about the movements of my vehicle will corroborate my description of the accident. i was extremely fortunate to impact a vehicle with enough mass to stop the momentum of my 2 1/2 ton suv. had i impacted smaller passenger vehicles or pedestrians, many people could have been killed.*ak

On august 7, 2005, my wife, 3 year old son and i drove our 2000 ford expedition up to wisconsin to my uncle's lake cottage. the trip was around 120 miles one way. we drove home, another 120 miles, and parked the expedition in our garage about 7:30 pm. it had run flawlessly, and there were no problems evident with the vehicle. at about 2:30 am on august 8, my wife and i awoke to the sound of our smoke detectors in our house, and the house was filled with smoke. my wife ran ahead of me out of the house, and i crawled into our son's room down the hall. he was still asleep, and i reached up, felt his body, grabbed him and tore down the stairs out the front door. our neighbors were already outside as they had heard crackling and banging from the garage- it was totally swallowed by flames. i had a '98 f-150 4x4 that was parked outside the garage, and when the garage door fell and the whole house went up in flames, it caught on fire too and was totaled. the fire departments from 5 towns all showed up and put the fire out. by the time they arrived, our house and both vehicles were completely destroyed, and the east side of our neighbor's house had the siding, windows and roofing burned off.....that house is over 75 feet away from ours. my wife, my son, our dog, and i all got out safe - we lost our family cat. we lost nearly every single material possession we own in this fire....and further investigation by our insurance companies and ford have deemed it was indeed the cruise control switch that started the fire. we now are living in a rental house waiting for our burned house to be rebuilt....it has been nearly 4 months and nothing has been done due to permit complications. *jb

I just found out the ford is now recalling the 2000 expedition's due to the cruise control issue. two years ago, i was on my way up north and gas was stuck and preceded to excel. i got off at birch run while fighting the gas with my breaks. after running several stop lights, driving reckless to get to a safe place to stop, i ended up leaving my truck parked in a parking lot for the weekend. i drove the truck to a ford dealer and they told me that nothing was wrong with it. it happened again a couple different times on my way to work in which i took it back to the dealership. they discovered the problem and told me to continue driving it until they got the part in. i ended up having to pay for half of the bill despite it being ford's issue. plus, i ended up having to buy new breaks due to them being worn out having to fight the speed acceleration with my breaks. this past sunday, it has started again. we left the palace of auburn hills and the truck was saying we were going 100 miles an hour down lapeer rd with traffic! what on earth am i supposed to do? keep driving this truck and risk my life, my 6 week old son's life, or someone else's life? i'm scared to death to drive this truck but i can't afford to get out of the lease or fight ford with an attorney. help!*ak
