Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, and light and medium duty pickup trucks. a switch located in the plastic cover of the wiper motor gear case could malfunction and overheat, potentially resulting in loss of intermittent wiper function, loss of wiper park function, complete loss of wiper function, or ignition of the plastic cover material. switch malfunction is most likely to occur when the intermittent setting of the wipers is being used, or when snow or ice obstructs the blades from returning to the parked position at the bottom of the windshield. these vehicles were built at the following assembly plants: atlanta plant from 2/11/00 through 7/31/00; chicago plant from 2/14/00 through 8/4/00; kansas city plant from 2/26/00 to 9/4/00; kentucky truck plant from 2/18/00 to 8/31/00; michigan truck plant from 2/23/00 through 8/3/00; norfolk plant from 2/21/00 through 7/27/00; wayne stamping and assembly plant from 2/25/00 through 8/15/00; and wixom plant from 2/15/00 through 8/8/00.
Consequence SummaryLoss of visibility while driving increases the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the date code on the wiper motor. motors built with the suspect time frame will have the wiper motor gear case cover replaced. owner notification began august 20, 2001. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-866-436-7332.

Odi has received 39 reports alleging that water leaks around the windshield causing electrical failures, including but not limited to the windshield wipers and the headlamps.ford reports that water entering the vehicle can wet the power distribution box (pdb) and the generic electronic module (gem).these components control various electrical systems in the vehicle.this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis, ea05015, to allow further investigation of the issue and to assess the nature of the potential safety consequence.

Consumers alleged that when it rained or snowed, water leaked into the vehicle around the windshield.moisture flowing through the seal that surrounds the front windshield follows a path through the seal into the generic electronic module (gem) and fuse box, and may cause the electrical components in the vehicle to malfunction.overall, the number of reports alleging wiper failures and lighting failures is relatively small.in reviewing a large sample of the 1503 complaints for windshield leaks, odi's analysis reveals that 0.04% of the total vehicle population reported improper windshield wiper operation and 0.01% of the total vehicle populationreported lighting failures.the warranty claims reveal that approximately 0.10% of the population has been serviced for wiper malfunctions and 0.08% for lighting malfunctions as a result of windshield leaking. odi's analysis of the field performance statistics and available technical information has not established that a defect trend exists in the malfunction, failure or intermittent operation of the front windshield wipers or headlights.see the attached summary report.

Multiple instances following rain of: vehicle turns over but will not start. removing the key any of the following will occur- heater fan blower comes on and will only go off with the key in and in the on position. lights may or may not come on. radio may or may not come on. all this with key out, vehicle empty and closed. sometimes blower will come on in empty vehicle. if the car starts sometimes the wipers will not work, the horn will not work, radio will not work, lights will not work or blinkers go on. any or all of this may occur. sometimes and oder like burning or sour gas will occur. if the rain quits and the vehicle sits for minutes to hours all these symptoms go away. i have pulled the lower kicker panel on the drivers side and found evidence of water below the gem near the edge of the carpet. i believe this to be the problem reported by many as the water entering from the windshield and shorting at the gem fuse connection. i am contacting the dealer, if they will not take care of it i will have a windshield replacement company try to reseal and examine for leaks. this appears to be potenially dangerous if engine would die while driving, light go out or wipers stop working.

2000 eddie bauer expedition, the paint on the hood has started to start chipping and started peeling off, three weeks ago. there is a huge difference in the paint on the hood and the paint on the remainder of the vehicle. this vehicle has been in great shape, until i noticed that the paint was coming off. the solution to this situation is that it is going to have to go the shop for them to repaint on the hood. i have not done anything about this as of yet. i have seen where ford is aware of this mistake in defective paint and they are not fixing it for consumers. *tr

I was driving on the pennsylvania turnpike in a hard rain and the windshield wipers stopped working. i could not see and was forced to quickly brake and pull off of the road. this caused a car behind me to swerve out of control. fortunately, there was not any physical accident. i am very concerned about the safety of this vehicle and feel like i can't drive the vehicle safely in the rain. symptoms in the rain only: windshield wipers stop working. radio, fan lights work intermittently. clicking noises and fan running when vehicle is off and key is not in ignition. very well documented issue on the internet. due to leaky windshield which damages electrical system but ford has no recall since it is not a safety issue. case number from ford customer service - 0382221079. *tr

We recently had a snow storm in our area. after the storm our expedition started having problems. the first problem to occur was the front blower motor for the climate control would turn on high when the ignition was turned to the off position. i started researching this problem and started finding many similar stories on the internet. the next day many other problems popped up several dash light were flashing on and off, when this was happening you could here relays under the dash clicking on and off. when the truck was having its episode of flashing lights i found that my window controls and windshield wipers also did not work. i parked the car and turned it off that day and it had one more surprise for me. when the light switch was turned to the automatic day time running lights and the key was off you could here relays under the dash opening and closing at a fast rate. i turned the switch to off and it stopped. i talked to my stepfather who is a mechanic. he told me that he has seen this before he said it probably was my gem module, he said that this type of vehicle is prone to these modules malfunctioning. i did more research on line and found that a investigation was done on this issue by nhtsa the action number was ea05015 it was conducted in 2005. from the looks of it this has been a problem for a long time that has affected many people but still no action has been taken. this is one of two problems i have had with this otherwise good vehicle which is making it an unreliable and unsafe vehicle. how can i feel safe letting my family drive around in this vehicle when it rains or snows which is for the most part all the time in washington? in conclusion i hope this is taken seriously and will have some kind of impact on getting this problem solved not just for me but for all the owners of this vehicle with the same problem. *tr

Sunroof assembly broke in the open position. dealer received vehicle for repair on 8/21/00. on 8/24/00, replacement part arrived at dealer in a damaged condition. service techinician stated it was common for ford to knowingly ship defective parts when inventory of 1st quality parts is depleted. this practice would demonstrate timely delivery of replacement parts to those who review shipping response time. second replacement sunroof assembly arrives at dealer approximately 8/28. it is also defective. third replacement sunroof assembly unavailable at this time. ford national relationship center advises me that part is on national backorder and can give no promise date for availability. also advised that ford engineering has been notified of this parts shortage. spoke to dealer this afternoon (9/6/00) and they have no information as to when part might become available. the 2000 model year was the first year that factory installed sunroofs were available on expedition equipped with rear a/c vents. one could conclude from the national backorder situation that there is an engineering defect with the sunroof assembly that i would like the nhtsa to investigate and/or publicize. i'd like to know how many other expedition owners have been unable to use their vehicles while waiting for parts for over 19 days. thank you. rex dyer

I have a 2000 ford expedition that has an electrical problem. i have researched online and discovered many others with similar problems. it is apparently due to a windshield leak that causes the gem module to short out. this first happened to me a month after i purchased the vehicle in february 2007. the vehicle wouldn't start, dash clicking noise , locks unlocking and locking continuously, lights on dash wouldn't go out, after key is removed dash info lights still on. when vehicle did start radio wouldn't work and by the way it was raining/icy. this problem has occurred several other times. windshield wipers not working properly, radio not working all problems happen only when it is raining. i personally cannot afford the $1,000. or so dollars it is apparently going to cost to fix this problem, which is obviously a factory defect. i have 4 children and have come to depend on this vehicle, i am afraid this short could cause and engine fire. *tr

I own a 2000 ford expedition. within the last month, i would turn the key to crank my truck and no sound. nothing would turn on. the electrical, totally dead. i would jump it off and it ran fine for 2 days and then the same would happen again. i have researched this problem and have found that a leaking windshield is the problem. it is leaking and causing my gem module and fuse box to get wet. this can cause a fire as everyone knows as well as unwanted electrical activity when the truck is unattended. it is also affecting my radio which will not turn on then turn on by itself. this is a manufacturing defect and i have read where many expedition owners are having the same problem with windshield leakage causing no starts and electrical problems. this should be fixed at fords expense considering it was not the fault of the owner ford has a manufacturing issue with their windshields. as you must know this is a fire hazard that could result in the death of innocent people. it is a defect from ford motor company that needs to be recalled now to prevent further damage or possible death by fire. if ford stands by their products this would be a good time to prove that to their loyal customers. *jb

My 2000 ford expedition has caused us numerous headaches and near accidents as a result of rain entering the vehicle due to a defective windshield installation. once the rain water enters the driver side dash panel ( underside ) and comes in contact with electrical components mounted there, numerous failures occur, such as : windshield wipers quit working, interior and dash panel lights flash on and off, and eventually quit working. the safety switch which allows the vehicle to be placed in drive while depressing the brake also fails once the vehicle is turned off. these problems are not just a nuisance, but a safety hazard, and after speaking to other expedition owners and reading numerous common stories of the same problem, i feel that this is a manufacturer's defect and should be recalled and repaired accordingly. in closing i would like to state that my wife was driving on a very busy interstate in the rain when she experienced our latest failure. although there was no accident, it was definitely a close call, and could have been potentially fatal. we may not be so lucky the next time.... *jb

On january 16, 2007 my wife drove our 2000 eddie bauer expedition to work as usual parked n a covered parking garage and went to work. at the end of the day she attempted to start her car and it was totally dead and would not start. she therefore had to get jump started in order to get home. on 1-17-07 i took the vehicle to a certified ford service department and had them evaluate and diagnose the problem. seems that the gem and cjb were water damaged and creating significant electrical shorts throughout the vehicles operating system. when the car was turned off the fan motor would actually continue to blow even with the keys out of the ignition. also the car at times would not turn off with the key. you can take the key out of the ignition and the car would still run. anyway, the dealer indicates that the windshield would have to be replaced and sealed as this was the source of the water damage. i questioned the validity of the diagnosis and the service advisor indicated that they were working on 2 more trucks with the same problem. the total cost of the repair is going to be $1150 to replace the windshield the gem and cjb. i have been reading up on this problem and fine that this problem is pretty wide spread in ford expeditions and want to make my particular situation a matter of record with the nhtsa in an effort to add to the number of consumers experiencing this problem. my vehicle has a long history of electrical problems which were corrected under a extended warranty. i am certain that this windshield leak problem is the source of my long standing problems. *jb

Water is leaking in from the windshield according to the dealership. the water is then entering the vehicle and affecting the fuse box and the gem module. it does very weird things to the electrical components of the vehicle, windshield wipers quit working while driving down the road, radio turns off once vehicle is put in drive, running lights do not work, battery dies, just to name a few the list goes on and the consequences are very dangerous in some cases. have you ever been driving down interstate in the rain and then all of a sudden have no wipers. let me tell you not good. the dealer wants an arm and a leg to fix it, money i do not have after spending 15k on a vehicle. so help me anything happens as a result of the failure and there will be a lawsuit. take a look around on the internet and there are hundreds maybe thousands complaining about the same issue. something must be done. *nm

On several occasions my lights and/or radio and or wipers would give out during a rain storm. on the last occasion my car's electrical system failed and my car turned off. i could not re-start until next day. i took it to the dealer and they told me that water had seeped in between the windshield and into the electrical control box. they would have to remove the windshield, re-caulk it, replace the gem and fuse boxes and that would take care of the problem. this was not under warranty because the caulking had deteriorated with time as it normally would. i've had cars for 10 to 15 years and the caulking on the windshield has never deteriorated like this. the suv is only 4 yrs old anyway. my problem was compounded by the fact that they broke the windshield during this process and i was stuck for that cost also. total of $1,223.67. *jb

I noticed when ever i drove my car in the rain water would leak on my right leg and foot, my wipers, radio and clock would stop working and i heard a sizzling noise in the left dash area. i also was unable to use my keyless remote, the alarm would go off every time. i brought my 2000 expedition to hayward ford to have them check and repair the problem in march of this year. they could not find anything leaking, or the sizzling noise i heard in the dash, however they did tell me there was a damaged junction box and kept my car for 5 days (they were waiting for the parts to come), well after 5 days of having a rental that also cost me money, i went and picked up my expedition. it made no sense to me to have the junction box replaced since they could not find where the leaking problem was. on june 8, 2005 i brought my expedition into another ford dealer (the ford store san leandro) hoping they could find the problem. well they found the problem, they said the windshield was leaking and had caused damage to the central junction box and gem module. this was also why i was unable to use my keyless remote. i was also informed that these repairs were not covered by esp warranty. i was told that this was a circumstantial issue. they also had to replace the windshield because when they removed it, it broke. so $1,327.78 and eight days later my expedition was repaired. but when they replaced the windshield, they scratched my dash board in two places. having read an article on cnn.com, feds probe ford suv water-leak reports, i would like to have my costs re-imbursed,as this should be a recall item.

I own 2000 ford expedition. just found out the windshield is leaking, causing water to get into fuse box and gem module under dash causing major electrical problems. the 4-way flashers came on while driving; the blower stayed on even after removing the key from the ignition, etc. had windshield replaced today and it only took 1 minute to break the seal. the repair guy said it should take at least 20 minutes and that if we would have had a wreck the windshield would have fallen out. i've done extensive research on internet and found this is a very common problem in 1997-2001 f150's, expeditions and navigators, but especially the 2000 expedition. the seal used by ford around the windshield dry rots causing the leak. service man at ford acknowledged the problem but says no recall has been issued. *ak

I first noticed a problem with my windshield wipers, they would not come on or just stop running then they started not turning off i had to pull the fuse to turn the wipers on and off. i made an appointment with ford to have the problem looked at and was advised that the control switch was bad and would have to be replaced also during the same time period and same appointment i had to have a brake sensor replaced. i started noticing electrical problems like the radio would turn off when the vehicle was taken out of park and some times it would turn off when you were driving down the road and turn back on by its self. there have been times when i would be leaving work and try to use the remote to unlock the doors and it would not work and when i use the key to open the door the radio would be on and the ac would be blowing air. i have since discovered that the windshield is leaking and after a rain was when the problem would occur mostly. i made another appointment and advised ford what was happening and i was advised that this is a common problem in the ford expedition and ford f150. i was advised that the seal on the windshield over time separates from the frame and causes the leak. i said then this is a defect and was advised no its not its just something that happens. my expedition is only 5 years old its a 2000 in great condition and had been garage kept for the past 4 years. now i am out $1043.69 just to have the windshield replaced and the gm module and fuse box replaced as well. *jb

6-12 months ago, 2000 ford expedition started having erratic electrical behavior. windshield wipers quit working during rainstorm while away on vacation. was very hazardous to have happen while driving down highway during a downpour! radio would go on and off while shifting the automatic transmission. took to dealer (still under warranty at this time), they tightened up some things, problem went away, until next rain storm! due to needing the vehicle, i could not get it back to dealer before factory warranty expired. i thought it would be ok though, because i had purchased a premium extended warranty. took to dealer a second time, now truck tries to start itself with no key in ignition, wipers again fail while driving during rainstorm, heater blower motor remains running after exiting vehicle. this drains the battery if left overnight, and results in an inoperable vehicle. truck four wheel drive indicators flash on and off at times while driving. not a good feeling when traveling 70 mph on the freeway. after inspection, dealer informs me that water has intruded into the dash components due to a leaking windshield. they state the extended warranty wont cover it because they dont cover water intrusions. gem module, fusebox need replaced, windshield resealed to fix problem. quote of about $1000.00 i declined repairs at the time. went home and researched the problem. seems many, many people have had the same problem. i called ford and after many phone calls, they declined to do anything about it. i am very disappointed with ford. have always bought their products because i believed they stood behind their reliability and workmanship. here is a factory installed windshield that started leaking before their 3/36 warranty expired, their dealer band-aided the problem instead of fixing the cause of the problem while still under warranty. now i have an inoperable vehicle in my driveway that frankly, seems to be a major safety risk to put my family of six in.
