Consumers alleged that when it rained or snowed, water leaked into the vehicle around the windshield.moisture flowing through the seal that surrounds the front windshield follows a path through the seal into the generic electronic module (gem) and fuse box, and may cause the electrical components in the vehicle to malfunction.overall, the number of reports alleging wiper failures and lighting failures is relatively small.in reviewing a large sample of the 1503 complaints for windshield leaks, odi's analysis reveals that 0.04% of the total vehicle population reported improper windshield wiper operation and 0.01% of the total vehicle populationreported lighting failures.the warranty claims reveal that approximately 0.10% of the population has been serviced for wiper malfunctions and 0.08% for lighting malfunctions as a result of windshield leaking. odi's analysis of the field performance statistics and available technical information has not established that a defect trend exists in the malfunction, failure or intermittent operation of the front windshield wipers or headlights.see the attached summary report.

The multifunction switch is failing when the steering wheel/column is put into a lower position. the left turn signal fails and goes to a rapid pulse unless the steering wheel is in the highest position. this is the exact same issue with the multifunction switch affecting the turn signals on my 2001 eb expedition that i see all over the internet and as is being addressed in an announced recall for other ford vehicles. http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2011/07/recall-alert-26715-ford-trucks-suvs.html will the recall be extended to other models having the same exact issue? i am also concerned now about possible electrical fires after reading other complaints here. i do not see recalls for these safety issues though. what will it take to get attention on these issues and to get ford to make the appropriate safety corrections?

Electrical: windshield leaking for a few years. first a small leak and did not think much about it. now it seems to be greater leaks into the car when it rains- leading to electrical issues such as dash lights go out, blower stays on, fuel gauge does not read right. radio sometimes will not work right and the lights go out. fuel tank: issues from day one - floats did not work right, now gauge does not read right, one point i could not fill the car - mechanic did something to try and correct it. hood/windshield leak: must be careful not to go to an automatic car wash. water into the engine area. must park at a certain angle during the rain. coil packs go out.

This vehicle was sitting in the service department of our dealership and had been idle since 5:00pm on 5/6/2011. at approximately 1:15pm on 5/7/2011, the vehicle spontaneously caught fire and subsequently caught a large portion of the service department on fire. the total damage is still untold, but the fire has shut the dealership down until it is deemed safe to open again. after speaking with fire officials and hearing this is a common problem among this make and model vehicle i did research and found that the cruise control switch has been found to be the culprit of many fires just like this one.

In the last 6 months, i have noticed that when it rains, my blower motor will run on high-speed and my lights will flicker after i turn the vehicle off. at first it would stop after a few seconds, however this last time, it ran for about 10 minutes and finally shut off. i called ford motor co to inquire about a recall. they have no record nor keep any data on anything . so i called the local dealer and they were 'familiar' with my problem and had a 'few' fixed. well, after doing some research on the internet, it turns out there's more than just a 'few' incidents.. there are several!!! the problem appears too start with a water leak in the windshield, going to the fuse box and gemodule which in turn sends electrical currents to the abs module which cause all sorts of problems. this is a ford manufacturers defect.

For the past month i have been experience electrical issues with my 2001 ford expedition after heavy rainfalls. on two separate occasions i have had to get a jump to start my truck after it rains and once it starts the electrical system seems to go haywire. the radio turns on and off and there are clicking noises. the vent turns on and off by itself etc. the most important of these malfunctions includes the windshield wipers. on two occasions i have been driving on the highway during these electrical events (while raining) and my windshield wipers have stopped working. each time i could not see a thing but was able to safely pull over to the shoulder of the road and eventually they start working again. to me this is a safety hazzard and by doing research on the web i can see that i am not the only one that has had this issue with an expedition between 1998-2001. many have experienced the same thing. apparently water leaks through the windshield and into the fuse box or gem module. what does it take for a recall loss of life? i am really disappointed that so many safety issues have come up surrounding the electrical malfunctions on these trucks and nothing has been done about it. please let me know if i can get assistance with getting this repaired as well as others who are going through the same things. if ford is willing to risk a life prior to helping fix a known issue i do not think i will be purchasing another ford again.

Was driving down the road in heavy rain when windshield wipers stopped working. could not see 2 feet infront of me, so i was forced to pull over on a busy road. put the truck in park, and wipers started working. put back in drive and they stopped. finally the rain slowed enough for me to drive with out the wipers, very unsafe! when i got home, i turned the key off, pulled them out of the ignition and the heater kept running. i had to turn it to off position. lights on gauge cluster were flickering too. opened driver side door and radio stayed on. had to manually turn that off as well. smelled something burning, so i quickly unhooked the battery. came back a couple hours later, connected battery, now vehicle wont start! will turn over, but wont crank. did some research and found that this is a very common problem with many different ford vehicles! problem is caused by a faulty windshield, allowing water to leak into the cab, behind the dash, and get water on the gem and fusebox, creating corrosion. these problems could be very unsafe! possible fire from electric short, possible injury/death from wipers quitting while driving. ford should take responsibility for their faulty design! *tr

Car would not start on lot when i went to look at it to purchase. dealer replaced battery. afew months later after car sat for a period of time(1-2 weeks) vehicle would not start. dealer replaced battery safer relay. few weeks after that same thing again. dealer says battery may be bad. replaced!! my latest event vehicle sat for about 2 days. temp went down to -29 i waited until temp went up to about -5 and went to start and battery was completely dead. took vehicle to an auto electric shop where draw test showed an 80 milliamp drain where normal should be about (ford says) 50 milliamps. a wire was cut to the subwoofer and drain went down to 17 milliamps. this is a factory installed item. i have read hundreds of complaints on the particular vehicle(2001 ford expedition) mine happens to be an eddie bauer model. a lot of the problems seem to be leaking windshields ruining the gem modules and fuse blocks. i don't know yet if my problem is solved or not only time will tell. i'm sure a lot of this type of thing has come across your desk. ford should take some of this burden off it customers. they know this problem widely exist and they do nothing. future gm customer. *tr

There seems to be electrical problems caused by a leaking windshield. this causes erratic behavior in the electrical system and i experience electrical shock when i touched the vehicle. i will cause accidents if it interfere with the power steering. this is a common problem in this vehicle according to the dealership - they should be responsible for there mistake - not slam the consumer with a $1000 repair bill. *tr

On 01/04/10 we had snow and rain. i drove to a store with my 2001 ford expedition and when i wanted to leave the car failed to start. i had to sit in the cold (13'weather) waiting for some one to help for almost an hour. when i took it to the dealership the following week, they slammed me with $1000 in repair costs - money i cannot afford to spent on a vehicle especially if it is the manufacturer defect, the repairman admitted that this vehicle had issues with leaky windshields that goes into the fuses box and the short out the electrical system, i did experience electric shock also when i touched the vehicle, at the time i did not think anything of this but now i fear that this electrical problem will cause sparks that can cause vehicle fires. furthermore - if you're driving and the powersteering fail due to electrical problems it will cause accidents. please look into this and help loyal ford owners to get the repairs they deserve. *tr

Ford expedition 2001 raining outside yesterday and today for first time this year. yesterday, battery light on dashboard (indicating electrical problem) went on for first time. tonight, went out with my wife and 3 young kids and as we were driving could tell something was definitely wrong with the electrical; radio shut off randomly, lights in cabin began slowly dimming, gauges went off then headlights, all in about a 3 minute period we were trying to get home as quickly as possible, but the expedition almost stalled, etc. we were able to make it home in the dark by the grace of god. went on the computer and began to read at ford-forums.com and realized our electrical problem was not unique but was a widespread problem that other ford truck/suv owners experienced. here's a link to the problems similar to what we experienced [http://www.ford-forums.com/ford-expedition/594-expy-has-serious-electrical-problem-2.html] i believe i'm having the same problem as those who have a leaky/faulty windshield and/or wiper-motor seal. the water gets into the fuse box and/or the gem module causing electrical issues and/or failures. i'm grateful my family is safe but our situation could have been disastrous and even life-threatening had it happened farther from home or on the freeway. i'm not sure what i can do to correct the failure but will be checking with my mechanic and ford dealer. *tr

Windshield leaking water causing erratic and unpredictable intermittent electrical failures in a 2001 ford expedition. windshield wiper operation is effected by water intrusion into the fuse panel and gem as stated in ford motor company advisory. when vehicle is placed into drive it operation of the windshield wipers is either non operational or only operational when vehicle is placed back into park. this a major safety issue which has been swept under the rug by ford motor company. this issue has been documented by numerous complaint on this web site alone. but until someone is injured or killed well this issue come to light and action to correct the problem which effect many families that use these vehicles everyday rain or shine. these incidents have been going on for more than three years. *tr

The blower in the front dash would keep blowing even when i took the key out. i had to leave it blowing all night at the apartment complex....i was worried that it might catch n fire. in the morning, the battery was dead. i called my repair shop, they came and jump-started my expedition. they have not worked on it, yet. i have found and recall that there has been a recall on this make and model (first noted in 2002). *tr

On the morning of 12/1/08 my 2001 ford expedition would not start, battery was dead. i jumped it off and drove it to the dealer. the ac fan and radio remained on even with the key out of the ignition. i have also learned the abs system could be affected. also; due to the electrical system shorting out there is the potential for fire. it has been determined that the windshield leaked water onto the fuse box/gem. ford issues a special service message #15773, in april of 2002. i bought this expedition from b&b ford at barnwell, sc 29812, 803-259-5524 on 2/21/2004. no one mentioned the ssm to me. now my vehicle is sitting in the middle of the dealership with the under wheel dash removed. they are telling me the it will be over $600.00 for the repair. this includes resealing the windshield, replacing the fuse box and gem. i feel that i have been driving in a vehicle that is poised to cause my family harm or death. purchasing from a dealer one would have to agree that these issues should be resolved before the vehicle was sold to me. once again, i was never made aware of any issues now a possible $600.00 plus bill. they ordered the parts today. this is definitely a ford problem not an ed problem. how many others are riding around in these time bombs? thanks for your time. ed corley *tr

Have owned my 2001 ford expedition for almost three years. have replaced the battery and when in rains, i have to keep towels in the vehicle because of leaking windows. it does not always leak in the same spot. many times i have attempted to start my vehicle and the battery is dead. now when i shut my vehicle off, the blower fans turns on and runs until the battery is dead. i also will be driving, and all my dash lights will blink on and off. i am concerned about the gem module and the possibility that this electrical activity could cause a fire, even when not running. i am hearing estimates for repair of up to $1,500.00. in my research on this, it is not an isolated event, nor an inexpensive one to fix. *tr

Car was parked caught on fire in the middle of the night. had city of seattle fire department and fire marshal investigator showed up also he determined fire was electrical. he gave me a report number i also reported incident to my insurance company. my car is a 2001 ford expedition. after reading on the internet all the other reports i have no doubt it was because of problems with the cruise control mentioned on many, many other sites. i am now stuck in a position where i have to buy another car, i have lost all the money i have invested into this vehicle. if i was aware of this problem when i brought it in 05 i could have had it turned around. the thing that really sticks out is that the recall was in 05 and makes me question why wasn't this fixed before i purchased the vehicle. *tr

 1. the air bag system fails when i turn the truck off and the rear end lowers to the ground. i have to wait a long time with the ignition on when i am parked for the truck to raise up. it also lowers while driving and i have to pull over and wait for it to raise up again. this happens throughout every day. i have not tried to get it fixed because it is very expensive. 2. when it rains the electrical systems goes haywire. the starter engages when the key is not in the ignition and when the truck is already running; the lights flicker or remain on; the blower turns on when the truck is shut off; the radio won't work; the windshield wipers won't work; when the car is shut down everything stays on and the battery runs down. *tr

After rain or heavy fog we experienced many electrical issues on our 01 expedition incl. horn not working normal, front & rear wipers not working or coming on by themselves, door locks locking/unlocking while driving, interior & exterior lights not working, alarm system going off while suv was being driven, fan blower on after suv was turned off, radio working intermittently, etc. the latest occurred 1/16/08 after heavy rains the prior night. suv wouldn't start in the morning and had to be jumped. it was driven that day with only issue being interior lights coming on themselves. on 1/17/08 suv wouldn't turn over and again was jumped. there was clicking noise from engine compartment that seemed to be coming from kelsey hayes black box. we immediately took suv to dealership and asked for tech to witness issue. tech confirmed noise coming from the k-h abs module, said problem was probably due to windshield leak into fuse box & gem module which was sending current to abs module and also causing interior lights to turn on/off by themselves. on 1/18/08 dealership said tech did pressure test on windshield and it leaked and needed to be resealed. fuse box and gem module would also need replaced. since problems were caused by water leak ford ext.warranty won't cover repairs. i spoke to srv mgr,who said he would call zone mgr.and get back to me. i called ford customer relations (crc) to document issues. called dealership on 1/21/08 and srv. mgr. said zone mgr. said nothing could be done to resolve situation and we were responsible for repairs. due to ongoing electric issues with suv we fear other safety features may malfunction compromising our safety. ford issued ssm 15773 on 4/05/02 to dealerships addressing unusual electrical issues after rain or snow resulting from a windshield water leak. the ssm included actions to be taken in that situation. our vehicle was back to dealership many times after release of ssm for electrical issues and ssm work was never done. *tr

I was coming home from church in heavy rain in 2001 expedition when the windshield wipers and radio quit. i was forced to pull over due to not being able to see road ahead. i shifted into park and the radio and wipers came on. but as soon as i shifted back into drive they quit again. so i waited out the rain. when rain ceased i made it home with no wipers or radio. when i switched the ignition to off and removed the key the radio and wipers started to work again. the reading on the speed odometer was little dashes, and three warning light were own. turn key back on and tried to crank suv. it would only turn the engine over (not starting it). i disconnected the battery to keep from running battery down. if this had happen in heavy rain on a crowded highway there would have been a major accident and probably death. it seem that the 2001 expedition has a history of windshield leaks letting the rain get on the fuse panel junction and gem module. what will it take to get ford to fix this problem, death and property damage? *tr

I have a 2001 ford expedition and 1 year ago the heater would stay on after i would remove the key from the ignition and the battery would be dead every morning. 4 months ago i was driving in the rain and when i put my car into park the radio would turn on and i would put it into drive and it would turn off. two days ago i was at work and i had gone to my car to retrieve something and i could hear across the parking lot that my car was trying to start without my key in the ignition i was freaking out, how can a car start without a key. i opened my car and put my key in the ignition, not knowing what to do i tried to start it to turn it off and when it was off i closed the door and started to walk back into work and it all the sudden was trying to start itself again. i went into work to get a man to come and unplug my battery. after work i reconnected the battery and it started i picked up my children and on the way home my car started grinding making weird noises then the radio was going on and off. i pulled over and grabbed my children out of the car thinking it was going to start an electrical fire. i had to stand in the rain and wait for a ride to pick us up and take us home. this only seems to happen in the rain. i was so scared for my self and my children. i went home and called a friend who knows a lot about cars and he said that this is common in ford expeditions the windshield window leaks. he says i have to get a new windshield and a gem module and a fuse box and a junction box. how can this be such a problem and ford has not recalled the leaky windshields. *jb my husband is very ill and we do not have any money to fix this. i now have no way to get him back and forth to the hospital. we all pay so much money for our cars and we have to worry about possible fires and unwanted elecrical activity when the car is unattended. i really hope ford can help me and many others out their. *jb

I own a 2001 ford expedition. for about the last 3 months, when it rains, the electrical system has numerous problems. it started about 3 months ago when the heater fan would continue to blow on high after the key was removed from the ignition. it would continue to run until the battery died. it gradually got worse over the last 3 months with a new symptom being added to the list. currently the radio and windshield wipers will not work when the car is in drive after it has been raining heavily for awhile. also the fan problem continues when the car is turned off. all this happens when it has been raining heavily for a while. i have seen reports from other owners that this is happening to them so i'm reporting it to you. since the windshield wiper doesn't work when it is raining, this could be a bad problem. *jb

2001 ford expedition ignition coils continue to short out when wet and always after a rain - water seeps into the engine compartment and inevitably that an ignition coil will begin to short out / begin missing and lose power while driving. because this always seems to happen during inclement weather the danger factor is heightened. i have spoken to other 2001 expedition owners and they all have experienced the exact same dangerous and expensive problem. another issue of consumer concern is that ford motor co. and it's service representatives are keenly aware of this and in fact have repaired the continuous problem during the first 75,000 miles. i personally have had the coils go out on me while driving in dangerous weather and have now had five(5) ignition coils go out on me at this time. ford motor co needs to take responsibility for this inherent mechanical problem and finally correct this problem before any accidents and deaths occur. *nm

There was a heavy rain the expedition was parked outside. there was water on the floor mat. the headlights, windshield wipers, radio worked when the expedition was off. yet would not work when the car was on. the expedition acted on its own. we took the expedition to the dealership (jim keim ford) where we purchased the vehicle. they charged us 893.00 to fix the fuse panel, sensor panel and reseal the entire front window. then jim keim told me it would be another 200.00 if they broke the windsheild. i paid the money and have not had a problem since. *jb

On may 18 2005 my 2001 ford expedition vin # 1fmru17w31lb14596 stopped working while at a local walmart store i had to call roadside assistance to tow my vehicle to my home being that it was about 11 pm and no shops were open i had the vehicle towed to my address and parked in the driveway the next evening while parked in the driveway undriven or started for 24 hours a neighbor ran into my home to get myself and my children out of our home screaming that our truck was on fire in the drive parked directly in front of the garage after pulling my family out we then called 911 where the local fire dept was sent out to our home to put out the fire. the fire marshall at that time told us where the hot point was and that we should contact ford i contacted ford immediately that morning and they denied any part of a recall for that or my other 98 ford expedition we then contacted sherry pullen at nhtsa to try to get asst. in this matter we also had our 98 ford expedition towed to the local ford dealer after this in fear of this happening again and they replaced the switch at no charge to us and said there was a recall sent to them by ford i faxed the work order and all info to sherry pullen and weeks later saw on the news that ford did expand there recall to include both of my vehicles i have contacted ford on numerous occasions with no response and have also files complaints with the bbb as well as that attorney general's office. *jb

My ford expedition was purchased in august of 2001. by november of '01 the battery had died. to shorten the story, i hit the highlights. basically it was determined by myself and ford that if the vehicle was untouched for more than 2 weeks, the active power drain on the vehicle was substantial enough to drain the battery. after 9 instances of taking the vehicle to ford over a 3 year period, towing the vehicle in, and working with them on what was wrong, i was told that top ford engineers said it was acceptable that if a ford vehicle had a substantial power drain that it was okay if the vehicle could hold a charge for 2 weeks. basically admitting fault and telling me it was my responsibility to work around this issue by installing a battery charger. since the expedition is my 2nd vehicle i only drive it once a month or so. if i do not keep the battery charged via external charger the battery will die. one note here is that the amperage draw to ground on the vehicle at all times is enough to cause substantial sparking if the battery cables are loose or removed. this also was deemed okay by ford. this causes me enough concern that i will not park this vehicle in the garage of my home due to fear of fire. but the vehicle cost enough that i can't simply replace it. i've notified many ford dealerships and contacts including calling, emails, and written letters on this subject and they simply accept the fact that they manufacture unsafe vehicles. hopefully this form will cause statistical notification of their shortfalls. *jb

In the last few months, i have noticed that when it rains, my blower motor will run on high-speed and my lights will flicker after i turn the vehicle off. at first it would stop after a few seconds, however this last time, it ran for about 10 minutes and finally shut off. i have a co-worker who has the exact same expedition and asked him if he's had this happen too him, which he stated yes and has been going on for around 6 months. i called ford motor co to inquire about a recall, since this is very unique in nature, and (of course) they have no record nor keep any data on anything (according too the rep). not quite sure what their job is! so i called the local dealer and they were 'familiar' with my problem and had a 'few' fixed. well, after doing some research on the internet, it turns out there's more than just a 'few' incidents.. there are several!!! the problem appears too start with a water leak in the windshield, going to the fuse box and gemodule which in turn sends electrical currents to the abs module which cause all sorts of problems. now if this isn't a ford manufacturers defect versus normal wear and tear, than i guess my college education means nothing. from my research and the local dealers quote, the cost of this repair starts a $1000.00.!! as of today, i have not fixed it, i'm deciding it i want to get a diff vehicle.

*tr

Electronic shortages is causing malfunctions in the ignition switch, wipers, running lights and radio. these malfunctions seem to worsen when it rains. the vehicle starts by its self while unattended. when driving if the wipers dont work, i have to shift the transmission to neutrl for them to operate and the same for the radio. i have spent several hundred dollars to have this problem looked at and the ford dealership stated that they have had several vehicles come in with the same problem, but i would have to pay around $1000.00 more dollars to change out the fuse box and still this may not the cure the problem. the technition stated that water was getting in behind the fuse box some how. he told me to silicone the cow down to the windsheild to reflect the water, so i did and it did not work. every morning my preganent wife as to use a battery jumper box to just start the vehicle because the electronics on the vehicle stays on all the time as if the key was insertered and turned to auxillary. the vehicle attempts to start during the night by its self. it does not start, the starter just turns over as if it is trying to start until the battery goes dead. i am scared that the vehicle is going to catch fire or even blow up in front of my residence. dealership said that they could not fix the problem until enough people came in asking for the same help. i hope there is something that can be done about this 36,000.00 vehicle. i have carried the vehicle to several other mechanics and they cannot figure out the problem but they still charge me for looking. *ak
