After dropping off my children at daycare i stopped at the store. when i got back into my car and started it, it made a loud pop like something had came off. so i proceeded to turn the ignition on and then smoke came out of the top vents and the truck began making a loud popping noise and the engine was shaking. i was scared as hell and i thought the truck was about to blow up from the sound of it. so i calmed down and drove to the auto shop thankfully down the street. well my spark plug had blew out the head and that's where the smoke was coming from. i had just replaced the #5 coil and plug with ford on february 23, 2012 and that was $340.61. i am barely making it financially and to read all of these problems with this truck and ford not taking responsibility of the situation is disheartening. i am a single mother of three children and live in an area with no public transportation so i am now without a vehicle and no way to get to work and support my family, now what do i do? its amazing how this dealership can swoop you in and take your money and require you to make your payments on time but won't provide you with a safe vehicle. i now have to get a cab to pick my kids up from daycare because i can't drive my truck, not to mention when you get inside it smells like pure smoke which makes it scary to even wanna turn the thing on. very frustrated and disappointed.

My husband was on his way home from work. he was going at about 70-75 mph when the #3 spark plug blew out. it left him stranded in the middle of nowhere. it has been brought to my attention that spark plug blowouts are a common defect on my vehicle yet ford takes no responsibility for it, costing the vehicle owners a large amount of money and could cause serious accidents.

While two hours from home bringing my son home from surgery, while getting off the freeway may vehicle mada a horrible sound like a chopper motorcycle and when i spent over a $1,000.00 to tow my car home to find out the spark plug #3 blew out and stripped out so now i have no vehicle and told by ford dealership repair that it was a design flaw on the aluimium block and not under waranty and would require a helicoil but could happen to the other plugs. plus it would cost me over $2000.00 to repair. i have seen lots of other people who have the same problem i have a 5.4 l engine and my vehicle runs strong i would of hoped ford would of stood behind this but i was wrong i will definately consider buying a different brand like a mazda or toyota

There was basically nothing wrong with the car, my boyfriend drove it back from corpus christi that same day and there was no overheating whatsoever. at around 930 pm. we were inside our home and heard poppin noises. we opened the door and the vehicle in total and complete flames. we called the fire dept and they put out the fire. it took a good 20 minutes to put down the fire. thank god we weren't driving the truck and no one got injured. i have 3 children , 5, 2, and 1 year old. there fire destroyed the engine, no windshield , and the tires are melted in the front. all the front of the vehicle is destroyed. besides that, my children carseats and other personal property were destroyed. *tr

I was driving down the highway in alaska going about 70 when there was a loud banging sound and it felt like i lost compression. i immediately pulled off at the next exit and checked under the hood at first i thought it was a blown head gasket but upon having it towed to the nearest shop it was determined that the spark plug ejected and caused the cylinder head to melt and also had major junks of metal in the engine itself. *tr

While traveling on the freeway at about 70mph when i heard a loud popping noise from under the hood. discovered one the spark plugs had been ejected from the cylinder head. the coil that sits above the spark plug had been broken as well. i was able to replace the spark plug and tighten it down enough to seal the cylinder and get the vehicle to a shop. the shop replaced all 8 spark plugs and the broken coil. the vehicle is a 2001 ford expedition xlt with a 4.8 liter triton v8 engine. *tr

The engine ejected the #3 spark plug, tearing up the threads in the process. the repair involved installation of a helicoil, although the dealer (packey-webb of downers grove il) insisted that the only available repair would be installing a new head assembly. the head assembly, including labor, would have been over 4 times the cost of the helicoil. this must have been due to either weak threads, or improperly torqued spark plugs from the factory. *tr

I bought a 2001 used ford expedition in december 2006. by august 2007 while in hay way 11 from el centro to calexico i made a stop in a stoplight in heber avenue. as i accelerated i notice the car running roughly. i stopped and open the hood and i notice that spark plug # 3 blew out of its place. i bought a new spark plug and it would not fit since the old spark plug damaged the head. pieces of metal went in the cylinder and warped it as well as the piston. no i have to put a new engine in since i do not have extended warranty and the cost is about $2600 dlls. i researched this issue in the net and with local mechanics and i notice that there are lots of people that have the same problem with this expedition or f150. *tr

I have a 2001 ford expedition 5.4. i was driving home with my two children when i heard a loud bang/pop and my truck came to a halt. i had it towed to a local repair shop to find out the noise i heard was my spark plug that had blown out and hit the aluminum heads causing damage. the heads were sent out to a machine shop and when it was all said and done, i paid over $3,000 to fix it. a few days after picking it up, i had to take it back in because a cool pack went bad, this was like my third one so far. this all happened in october 2006 and not even 6 months later in march or april, my truck was back to barely running/moving. i had it towed again and once again its the engine. it has been a viscous cycle and one thing after another. it will cost me at least $5,000. to replace the motor with just a remanufactured one. in the last year the truck has sat in my yard more than half the time due to engine trouble. i am unable to get to and from work which is causing my family major financial stress. i cannot afford to fix this again. i still owe over $15,000. on the truck and am paying $420. per month for something not even running. i am stuck between a rock and a hard place. i don't understand why ford will not stand behind their product. any help/advice will be greatly appreciated. *tr

While driving back from new hampshire to virginia, my 2001 expedition popped a plug from its engine. i had to have it towed 200 miles because the smell of fuel it was late friday and there was nothing i could do until monday. i called the customer service line in dearborn, mi. i was told by the female operator (charlotte) to bring my vehicle to bowditch ford and to have them run a diagnostics test. my vehicle went off to the shop via flatbed as to not cause any further damage. i later received a call from the service manager telling me that it would cost $92.50, i ok'ed it because over the weekend i did some research on the triton engine and found that this was a common problem. in the meantime i was still in contact with ford and had even talked to an operator named ralph. i explained to him that i did some research and found that this had happened to nearly 800,000 vehicles and some resulting in death. dearborn, mi said they would keep in touch with the dealership and would contact me thursday. thursday morning came and i was contacted by dearborn again. they told me that there was nothing they could do that i would have to pay for the damages myself. i was also told by dearborn to ask the dealership, who receives certain allocated funds each year for repairs just like this. the dealership refused assistance. after all was done i was charged for an ecsd diagnose (92.50); 2 spark plugs (6.81); 1 coil assembly ignition (103.69); fuel ingestion cleaner (6.47) another vehicle key ? (30.00); misc drivability charge (92.50); pcm reprogramming the computer? (92.50); clean the throttle body (78.75); clean the injectors? (65.00). they also fixed a speed control deactivation device of which was under recall. as a disabled veteran that was half my check for the month. the dealership had my vehicle for 3 days. 1st day, checked engine and found the number 1 and 4 plugs were screwed up and that the injectors were backwards. *jb

A week ago i was driving my 2001 ford expedition to friends for a social visit. on the way, i drove as i normally do the speed limit as posted. at around 10:00 pm, in the middle of nowhere, i encountered the now well known and dreaded spark plug ejection. thought i had been shot at there for a second, but soon realized what it was. it couldn't have happened at a worse time nor to a worse spark plug to reach, far left rear. i was only 75 miles from home stranded by my vehicle. i truly am a loyal ford fan and owner of several, but this is by far the worst vehicle i have ever owned! i am thoroughly discusted with this piece of you know what! after getting it towed home, i attempted a replacement of the plug only to find the plug hole was screwed up and couldn't get it in there straight. so what the heck do i do now? ford motor company, this is a crock and you know it! whatya gonna do now? blow it off and do nothing, as i expect. or are you going to repair it as you well should. these vehicles aren't cheap, but i am beginning to think they area built that way intentionally. what are you going to do ford?

The spark plug (passenger side, second back from front of engine) ejected from the engine head while parked. we had driven for 20 minutes, stopped at a restaurant, turned off the engine, but restarted it within about 60 seconds. the spark plug ejected immediately after the engine was restarted, within 1 second. there were no injuries, and the vehicle was not in motion at the time. my entire family was in the vehicle at the time. the sound of the ejection was sufficiently loud that it resembled a gunshot, to which an off-duty officer reacted. the coil pack was damaged beyond use, the spark plug insulator shattered. the plugs appeared to be original motorcraft plugs, although at 130k miles, they would be very old. they had sufficient carbon and wear that they could be original plugs or plugs from the first scheduled replacement (if it was done). repairs have not yet been performed.

Blown out spark plug from 2001 ford expedition triton 4.6l engine during operation on a public road. the second spark plug on the passenger side blew out of the engine while it was being driven on the road. this made a loud bang sound as if a tire blew out. the loud sound continued like a loud exhaust leak and gasoline vapors were immediately present in the passenger compartment. the driver shut off the engine to prevent an engine fire after attempting to safely park on the side of the road while avoiding moving traffic. this required aggressive maneuvering to avoid moving traffic. the car is now awaiting repairs, which is est. at >$3,000. the mechanic reported that this is a very common problem on ford vehicles with the triton engine. i have never before seen a spark plug blown out of the socket like this. the plugs were replaced once at about 50k miles. the engine has about 110k miles today. *tr

I was driving down the road with my 4 children inside when we heard a loud explosion, my ford expedition engine sounded like there was something very wrong. we pulled into a gas station, lifted the hood and you could smell the gas and feel air blowing outside of wear the spark plug used to be. we towed it to a mechanic, we were told that our spark plug blew out taking the coil pack with it. this is the first time we have had a spark plug blow out but we have had to replace 4 other spark plugs and coil packs because they keep working their way out causing the engine to run rough and the check engine light to come on. we have three more plugs and coils that haven't been replaced. i am scared that at any time we could blow another spark plug and cause an accident. i have been told that there isn't any thing i can do to prevent this problem from happening again. the mechanic said it is very likely that the other plugs will have to be replaced in the future but currently the are working. the spark plug that blew out is along the road somewhere but i still have the spark plugs that haven't been replaced. the spark plugs are having to be replaced every month or so, one at a time. my engine still has three more spark plugs that could blow out. luckily, when this happened there wasn't a fire. you can smell the gas fumes when this happens. we have always maintained our vehicle by a mechanic, this is the first time we have ever had a recurring problem. the mechanic stated this is not a common problem and it is a design flaw, and ford is aware of this problem. *tr

Driving about 40 miles per hour in my 2001 ford expedition w/ triton v8 5.4l when i heard a loud pop. vehicle was very loud afterwards but still driveable. had to stay under 15 mph to turn around and drive it the one mile i had already driven to return home. greater than 15 mph produced sounds similiar to the sound of an extremely loud lawnmower. problem: blew a spark plug. don't know which one yet but from what i am reading on the internet, the repair will be sure to drain my wallet. am having it towed to the dealer tonight to find out the damage to my engine and my purse.*ak

My wife was driving our 2001 expedition home from work which is about 35 miles away when the #2 spark plug blew out of the cylinder head of the engine causing it to misfire badly. she had to pull off the side of the road in someones yard. luckily the person there let her use a phone to call me. i called into work, went and picked her up and we went to the nearest ford dealership in springfield, tn. we had to suv towed to the dealership, they inspected it and found the spark plug had blown out of the cylinder head. ford would not cover any part of the cost because my vehicle had 49k miles on it and i had changed the spark plugs about 15k miles ago because the #1 cylinder factory spark plug fowled up. anyway it cost me five days without a vehicle and $2953 to replace the head. i am an engineer and feel that this is a design issue with the vehicle. there have been to many other cases just like mine for it to be an isolated incident. this may seem like just a property damage issue but if stranded in the middle of nowhere or even on a busy street or interstate it has the potential to be life threating. thank you for your time. sw. *jb

While driving my 2001 ford expedition at 50 mph i heard a pop and this was followed by erratic handling and poor idle. an inspection later revealed a spark plug which ejected out of the cylinder head and stripped the threads with it. the cost to repair the head was $600.00. initially i was told i would need a $2700 head replacement. the dealer advised me that there still can be no guarantee that the repaired plug won't come out or any of the other plugs. research of this problem shows many expedition and f-150 owners with the same problem.*ak

Begining in the fall of 2003 my 2001 ford expedition with the 4.6l engine begain to make a ticking sound at start up (when engine is cold). i've had the vehicle in the dealer several times and they have heard the sound, but they have offered no reasonable explanation of the cause or nature of the problem and the potential damage it may cause. there are several service bulletins, including 03256, that noted this problem.*ak

Frequently, when i am idle for a few minutes and proceed to pull off or merge into traffic, the vehicle shuts down completely as i try to accelerate. sometimes i can restart the vehicle immediately and other times i have to wait five minutes. i've reported this problem to the regency ford dealership (where the vehicle was purchased) 4 times. they are unable to duplicate or fix the problem. i have also make a complaint to ford motor company about this life endangering hazard, but no similar defects were reported from other 2001 ford exp. i have been told to wait until the problem gets worse to duplicate and correct it. *ph *nlm **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut over to artemis**768009

The spark plug blew out of my 2001 ford expedition. i was cranking the vehicle and heard a loud pop and then the motor started popping and shaking. i had to have it towed to the ford dealer that has handled all my repairs. they claim the aluminum in the head is faulty and there are no threads on the head but the heads on the spark plug are fine. the warranty company claims that they do not cover the threads on the head; just the head itself. well duh is that not part of the head. i am still fighting with both the dealer and the extended warranty company. i have paid the extra cost for the maintenance and repairs on my vehicle over the years because i wanted the dealer to handle everything just in case something like this did happen and the warranty company could not get out of paying because i didn't have the dealer do the repairs. i expected better than this from ford. i had every preventive maintenance performed on this vehicle that ford motor company recommends and it was done by a ford dealer; plus i have the extended warranty. either ford, the dealer or the warranty company should pay for this; because judging from the other complaints that i have seen; they are all aware of the problem!!!!!!! *jb

Since approximately march of 2002 i have experienced four seperate incidents where my truck suddenly accelerated. each time i was moving slowly using the engine idle speed to propel the truck forward when the truck suddenly accelerated. twice i was pulling into my garage, once pulling into a instant oil change station once pulling into a car wash. each time i was able to stop the truck before striking anything using the brakes. pulling into the oil change station i was very startled as the mechanic was guiding me into the stall and if i had not reacted as quickly as i did i'm certain would have been injured. i contacted the dealer by telephone and they stated that no one had reported any similar incidents. i also had the truck examined by another ford dealer and they could not locate any codes nor could they duplicate the problem. i have owned more than 25 vehicles during my lifetime and this is a first for me. this is also my second ford expedition, nothing like this has ever happened with that truck either. i hope to resolve this problem before someone gets injured by my vehicle or another expedition. thank you for your interest, michael t. adamczak. dt

The vehicle erupted in flames upon impact with another vehicle and burned on the shoulder. the fire appears to have started in the engine compartment and then engulfed the passenger area. there is no evidence to suggest that the other two vehicles that were involved caused the consumer vehicle to catch fire.

My 2001 ford expedition blow a spark plug out of the engine head. research indicates this is a very common problem with ford aluminum head engines. ford will not provide the consumer with a program to help with the cost to repair this obvious design defect. they have a redesigned head that will replace the defective head for $3,500. ford takes no responsibility for the financial hardship this engineering defect has caused thousands of ford owners. *jb
