Vehicle is a 2001 ford expedition xlt 4x4 purchased new in april 2001 and owned continuously by current owner, only serviced at hub ford of colchester, ct and girard ford of norwich ct. failure of suspension/drivetrain components occurred while accelerating onto a highway onramp. both rear lower control arms had corrosion that led to complete disconnection from rear axle. with no supporting lower control arms, the rear transaxle shifted during vehicle acceleration. shifting of transaxle then introduced excessive force on drive shave ujoint (rear transaxle ujoint) which caused complete failure and disconnection of rear driveshaft. vehicle's 4wd system engaged, allowing vehicle to be safely guided onto the available offramp (cloverleaf highway intersection) and into safe recovery location for towing by aaa to a local ford dealer. girard ford repair estimates costs for all four corroded control arms to be approximately $1500. shattered parts or debris also cut rear brake line leading to loss of rear braking and all brake fluid loss - causing additional indirect repair costs. owner is recovering corroded control arms after repair for evidence to be used in any nhtsa investigation. nhtsa is encouraged to contact the owner/complainant of vehicle for access to failed parts for investigation support. *tr

I have had electrical problems from the begining, then transmission problems they have attempted to repair then replace the transmission over 6 times. this vehicle has become unreliable at this point. i am trying to go through the ford dispute settlement board at this point but i am looking for all the help i can at this point

I am being told my expedition transmission needs to be rebuilt. originally (two weeks ago) was told it was a torque converter, and noticed no differece after spending $885.00. after taking car back in, i am being told transmission needs rebuilding. total cost is $2200.00, champion ford says ford will pay 1700.00 i need to pay an additional $300.00. seems odd that a transmission goes out at 44,000 miles; we don't pull or haul anything.

With all the talk about the toyota acceleration problem, it made me recall two times when my ford expedition did the same thing. it was only momentarily though and did not surge up to high speeds. it was just a surge of power and my foot was not on the accelerator ...it only happened twice so i never thought much about it.. *tr

While returning from a fishing trip, my 2001 ford expedition with 28,000 miles on it, started not shifting out of second gear. the overdrive off light started to flash on the gear shift, and the check engine soon light came on. i shifted into 2nd and drove the remaining 50 miles at 45 mph. i unloaded my gear and drove it down to my dealer. the next day they called me and said i needed a new transmission,cost$3630.00. complained to ford and was told there is nothing they could do for me. i can tell by your listed complaints i'm not the only one. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford expedition. the contact heard an unfamiliar noise while driving the vehicle. he took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the transfer case needed to be replaced. the dealer made the repair, but three days later the vehicle failed to drive in reverse. the contact returned to the dealer and was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. the speed was unknown. the current mileage was 105,000 and failure mileage was 58,000.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 60 mph, the transmission shifted into neutral instead of overdrive. the vehicle was shut off and restarted, which momentarily fixed the problem. after 20 miles, however, the vehicle stayed in neutral and would not engage any other gear. the vehicle was towed to a private repair shop, where it was determined that the intermediate diode teeth detached, the diode mounting snap ring was fractured, the reverse clutch housing was scored, the overdrive band was metal contaminated, and the one-way clutch was fractured. the mechanic notified the contact that had been a common problem with the vehicle.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 20 mph, the automatic transmission failed at 80000 miles. the contact found information online that this vehicle had a tendency for early failure. a non-service dealer stated that these transmissions consistently failed at about 80000 miles. the vehicle was not taken to a service dealer. updated 09/05/06. *jb

2001 ford expedition with less than 52,000 miles on it lunged forward at a stop sign and then would not go when accelerator pedal was pushed. finally went as i entered the freeway with lunging and de-acceleration for about 15-20 miles. as soon as i got off the freeway the vehicle lunged forward and then locked up. i escaped being hit 2x by trying to pull over. i limped to my destination of a block and ended up having to have truck towed to a local dealership only to find my transmission had failed. cost me $3791 for what i thought was a new transmission as quoted by the dealership; when i picked it up, it was a rebuilt transmission, not what we agreed on. secondly, i had a service extended contract for 72 months or 100,000 miles which the dealership failed to remind me about. nor did ford when they know i was 2.5 hours away from my home offer any help to get home, rental car or even a loaner. i was without transportation for an entire week. reading about this transmission it has been a problem for years with no recall - this is a serious defect. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 55mph, the check engine and over drive light illuminated. afterwards, the engine stalled. the vehicle was coasted to the side of the road where it was restarted however, the lights remained illuminated. it was driven to the dealership which determined the torque converter and the transmission needed to be replaced. updated 05/03/06 *jb

Dt: the contact complained about several problems with vehicle. first, the accelerator pedal stuck. the dealer cleaned the throttle body which seemed to solve the problem. the vehicle would sometimes surge forward. she thought the surging was related to apparent transmission problems. she finally had the transmission rebuilt. part of the cost was covered under the extended warranty. secondly, the seat belt in the middle row did not retract correctly. the dealer could not duplicate the problem. therefore, no repairs were made to the seat belt. thirdly, the left rear door actuator had to be replaced because the power locks were not working. fourthly, the rear passenger child safety lock did not work properly. once the child safety lock was deactivated, and the door handle was raised from the inside, the child safety lock activated. the contact's husband corrected this problem by taking apart the lock and cleaning it. she had to push very hard on the exterior key pad to get it to work. the dealer did not think this was a problem since she was able to get it to work eventually. lastly, the right front power window worked intermittently. the dealer could not duplicate the problem, and no repair was made.*ak

Tire tread separated. (nar) *ph while driving a piece of the passenger side rear tire tread came off the tire. the tire was replaced with the spare. next the drivers side rear tire tread separated which caused temporary loss of control. the tire damaged the rear bumper and wheel well. while doing research the consumer came across a recall notice for the tires. the consumer request reimbursement for the price of five new tires, damage and mental anguish. the vehicle transmission also had to be overhauled because it caused the vehicle to vibrate while changing gears. the ignition coil was replaced to alleviate bucking while driving at a steady speed. *nm

The complaint was sent via e-mail. i recently had a near accident while traveling. the vehicle transmission just all of a sudden locked up and slammed out of gear. luckily i had just exited off a busy highway, and was spared a possible deadly accident. after taking the vehicle to a repair shop i was told the sprag clutch had gone out, and the metal shavings were all in the transmission. i was also told that the problem was a known issue by ford and among the repairs shops. the defect is identified within a specific 6 months time frame of production. they said that the new ford replacement transmission has been modified to fix this known defect in the sprag clutch.*ak

While stopping we would hear a thud sound coming from the transmission as well as it would surge. then it lost the ability to disengage from 4th gear. took it to the dealership and they had it for a week. got it back, and on the way home the problems started again and the error code started again. took it back for another round of repairs. so far this has cost ford $2,300 and counting. *jb

POWER TRAIN - TRANSFER CASE (4-WHEEL DRIVE)
01/05/20089000104/18/2001
Within months of purchasing the vehicle it began to spontaneously go into 4 wheel drive. initially i thought i had hit the switch which is nowhere near the steering wheel. i put the vehicle in neutral and then back into drive and it seemed fine. it began happening more and more frequently. on one occasion in 2003 i was driving on the freeway and it locked up. it went into 4 wheel drive and luckily i was wearing my seatbelt because the force was comparable to slamming on my brakes. i drove off the freeway and was able to get it out of 4 wheel drive but was terrified to drive on the freeway. i called the dealership who told me they couldn't look at it until the following morning. reluctantly i drove it home. i was repeatedly told nothing was wrong with my vehicle while it was under warranty. while driving my vehicle through a parking lot it decided to go into 4 wheel drive and completely locked up. i could not drive in forward or reverse. i had the vehicle towed to a dealership who told me that there was problem with the 4 wheel drive that could be fixed but that my warranty did not cover it. about a thousand dollars later i drove off with my vehicle believing that it would work properly. within less than one year of the repair i was on the freeway again and my 4 wheel drive kicked in. once again saved by the seatbelt, i called the dealership. again i was told that the repairs were only covered for 1 year or a certain amount of miles (not sure on the miles ?5000). the dealership told me that this was not an unknown problem that ford was having. they told me that they were aware of the problems but all they could do was keep fixing it. the dealership even had the nerve to tell me that when it starts to bind up to put the vehicle into reverse. very helpful when your doing 65 on the freeway. today while actually using my 4 wheel drive the transmission continually slipped. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle shifts into four wheel drive low on its own. the vehicle has been to the dealership for repairs. the transfer case pump and gem module was replaced, neither of these repairs fixed the problem. this problem caused an accident, while traveling 40 mph in a turn, the vehicle shifted in 4wd low and the vehicle lurched to the right. the vehicle hit a rock wall on the front passenger side. there was a police report taken at the scene and both occupants received minor injuries. the vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop for repairs.
